Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sunday, your chance to sample the work of a varied and talented group of authors. You'll find links to both groups at the end of the post. In my excerpt today, which is from my September 23 release Rest Thy Head, my heroine tells her mother that she walked in on her fiance with another woman. This is her mother's response.

With a suddenness that stunned Peyton, her mother grabbed
her and shook her until her hair tumbled around her shoulders.
“Don’t ever speak to me in that fashion again!”

The ringing of the doorbell brought Eleanor to her feet. “You
remember what I said. I’ve got a lot invested in you, and I have no
intention of losing Drew to a hussy like Megan Thomas.”

She strode from the room, leaving Peyton too shocked to
even cry. A moment later Eleanor called from downstairs, “Peyton,
Drew is here to see you.”

  1. This is a fabulous snippet. Mom doesn't want to hear the truth, and it makes me wonder what she's to do or the kind of future she'll have. Well done.

  4. Don't ever tell me the truth again! You hear me?

You captured the moment with accuracy and horror.

    Kudos!

  5. Holy crap! So she's supposed to do this for her mother? Good glory, I'd be gone in a heartbeat. Nicely done, Elaine, and congrats on the upcoming release.

  6. You tell a real story of the way families work sometimes. Not always with the kids best interests at heart. Good job, Elaine.

  8. What a thing to say out loud. Yikes. Powerful show of character. Really well done.

  9. Talk about a domineering mother!

Just a thought. Maybe it reads differently in context, but just going by the mother's words later on, the opening line, “Don’t ever speak to me in that fashion again!” didn't quite seem to fit. I think she's objecting to the content rather than the manner of speaking. More like "I don't want to hear about it again."

  11. Wow, I'm with other comm enters, Elaine. What is wrong with mom? You do write very real characters with all of their very human faults and weaknesses. :-)
