Beyond the Book: Flood

If you're enjoying these excerpts, please tell a friend about Flood. If you read the book, please be sure to review it on Amazon and Goodreads.

Now for a blurb and excerpt:

Blurb:
Drawn together by their love of animals, Aria De Luca and Caleb Hawkins burn for each other. They never suspected that malignant forces around them were successfully plotting Caleb’s ruin from the moment he entered her life. When the flood of a century strikes Aria’s hometown, an alienated Caleb is all that stands between her and catastrophic loss.

Last Week:
He drew a deep breath of the fresh air and noted that for the past three years he’d mostly missed out on the beauty of the springtime. From his cell he hadn’t been able to see even a sliver of the sky. The Department of Corrections initiative that had let him work at the animal clinic had been a lifesaver for him. If not for that escape from his cell, he had no idea what would have become of him, but he suspected it wouldn’t have been anythinggood. He loathed being cooped up and always had.

He saw movement out of the corner of his eye. A big, yellow dog with floppy ears was following a slender, dark-haired woman from behind the building. Eagerness filled him. Peaches. The dog was Peaches.

This week
He called out and waved to the woman who turned and walked his way. All at once Peaches bayed and took off at a dead run in his direction. He held out his arms, and she launched herself at him, bowling him over, licking his face and whining while her tail wagged a mile a minute. “Good dog,” he crooned as he stroked her head and fondled her ears. “Good Peaches. I missed you.” Swiping his eyes, he hoped nobody was watching him make a fool of himself over a dog.

She looked great. Although she had some scars on her back, her coat shone. Her eyes were bright and clear, and she must have gained ten much-needed pounds. Her attitude was better too. He saw no trace of fear or aggression in her eyes.

Dark Justice: Morgan

Title: Dark Justice: Morgan
Series: Dark Justice Series, Book 1
Author: Jenna Ryan Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Genre: Romance Suspense
Release Date: October 23, 2017
After attempting to help the FBI expose a ruthless weapons and drug dealer, Owen Fixx, Amber Kelly enters the Witness Protection Program. Unfortunately, her sister, who was once married to said drug dealer, is forced to join her—key word, forced. When Rachel grows tired of their new life and runs off with a local man, a nightmare ensues for Amber. The only person who can help her is Gage Morgan, an edgy former police officer. The mysterious and compelling Gage must convince Amber that he is not only on her side, but he is also her best bet to stay alive. Amber wants her sister back. What she doesn’t want is to be attracted to her sexy new protector. But in the haunted Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, desire trumps logic. And it leaves a smoldering trail for Fixx’s gunmen to follow.

She shivered, hopefully from the cold. “Can we get into Bear’s truck, start it, and get warm?” For an answer, Gage opened the door and, circling her waist with his hands, helped her up and in. The engine did indeed sound like a locomotive—a very old, very rough one that backfired from time to time.
“Serious horses under that hood,” Gage remarked.
“None of this is your fault. You know that, right?”
She pulled off Bear’s slicker and shook her hair loose. “I could have said no when I was approached. It’s a sentence unto itself, and I’ve used it before, many times.”

“With the FBI?”
“That’s a point. God, Gage, I was so calm and centered in Las Vegas.”
“You’re calm and centered here.”

“No, I’m not. I look and act that way, but inside, my mind’s buzzing. Constantly whipping thoughts around. And being with you isn’t helping me combat that.”

“Why?” He grinned. “Because you don’t like taking orders? Or because you want to make out with me?”
Punch him or laugh. It was a tough choice. Amber took the less aggressive path and, tipping her head at him, smiled.

“Maybe a little of both. But then, they say patients often fall in love with their doctors, so who knows which feelings are valid and which aren’t?”

“Making out doesn’t require feelings.” Reaching over, Gage caught a strand of her hair and played with it. “It’s a jungle thing.”
She teased him with her expression. “Primal instinct?”

“I’m a guy, Amber. I’m a sucker for the most basic sexual lure.”

Her situation with Fixx wasn’t the only form of insanity, Amber reflected. On the other hand, she could be dead by tomorrow, so why not indulge her senses?

One quick taste, she promised herself and let him use the hair he still held to draw her forward. Rain wouldn’t melt her, and neither would a kiss. Quick and simple and…

“Oh, what the hell,” she murmured.
She caught hold of his jacket as he hauled her across the seat, and took his mouth with a hunger she hadn’t realized she possessed.

Hadn’t realized he possessed, either. The taste of him exploded in her head the instant his lips met hers. There was heat and need and far too many other sensations for her to untangle.

The self-control she’d prided herself on possessing splintered. She wanted more than just a kiss, much more than a taste. She wanted to explore his mouth, then take that exploration deeper, lower until she’d seen and felt every part of him.
He used his tongue to probe her mouth. She used her teeth to nip. His hands slid from her shoulders to her arms, then up again to cup her head and hold it steady for a more thorough invasion.

“Definitely going crazy.” She drew back ever so slightly, couldn’t seem to find air in the truck. Could a person suffocate from desire? “This shouldn’t be happening.”
“Yeah, well, life’ll screw you around sometimes.” Gage kissed her cheek. Then he captured her mouth again and made her head spin.
A dozen rockets burst in her brain. One after another, like the blast of a high-powered rifle.
Her fists clenched on Gage’s jacket as reality crashed in. She tore her mouth from his. “Those aren’t rockets.”
He was already moving. “Stay down. Stay with me. Right with me.”
More shots blasted through the air. Amber hit the ground and remained low. A small army of Fixx’s men was all she could think.
“Look right,” Gage said from in front of her. “They’re up on that knoll. We’ll have to circle back to Bear’s shack.”

Amber didn’t argue, didn’t hesitate. She pulled the gun from the pocket of her hoodie and ran with him.
Jenna Ryan was born in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, but spent her childhood in several different areas of the country. She began creating stories before she could read. Growing up, romance alone had a strong appeal, but as it turned out, romantic suspense was the perfect fit. After all, what could be better than adding the darker elements of a mystery to a romantic relationship? And, oh, the fun of those secondary characters. Over the years, she has worked in several different industries, including modeling, interior design and travel, however, writing has always been her passion - even if she didn't go about it in the usual way. She earned a degree in Creative Writing from the University of Victoria in British Columbia and currently lives in a semi-rural setting fifteen minutes from that city.

EXCERPT:

Excerpt One:

The battle that day was over by mid-morning. Alexander lost twelve men. The enemy lost half their army and sued for peace before noon.

Alexander was carried into the infirmary where I was helping Usse. His ankle had been shattered by a lance.

“Are you all right?” I asked, rushing to his side.

He stared at me, sweat pouring off his face, and his eyes two wells of pain.

“Would I come here if I was all right?” he gasped.

I sat down next to him and held his hand while Usse took off his sandal and examined the wound. When he probed, my own hand was nearly broken in Alexander’s grip, and I yelped.

“Sorry,” muttered the slender Egyptian doctor, dousing the ankle with hot water mixed with different herbs. He cleansed it and put a splint around it. There wasn’t much else he could do. Now we just had to pray it didn’t get infected.

We stayed for three days while we organized the peace talks with both tribes. Then Alexander decided to pull out and head straight to Nysa. An ambassador for the Assacenian king told us that the child of the moon was being worshipped in Nysa.

The child of the moon was Paul, my baby, now nearly five years old. I hadn’t seen him since he was ten days old.

Alexander left two divisions behind with his general Coenus while we took the rest of the army. We would all join up at the Indus River.

Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors

Welcome to Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors, you chance to sample the work of a talented group of authors. When you finish here you can find more excerpts at

We'll continue with out excerpts from Flood. I hope you're enjoying them because I really enjoyed writing the book. Before we get to the except, let me share an Amazon 5 star review with you. I was very pleased with it.

If you love animals and romance, this is the book for you. Aria is a caring veterinarian and Caleb is a former convict who ends up working for her. The romance has a nice, steady build, not too much at once. You can see how these people really fall for each other. I love how protective Caleb is and how Aria believes in him. The flood adds a tense, exciting element to the climax. I definitely recommend this book!

She has a love for music, art, traveling, creative writing and going against the opposite sports team of her father’s. Savannah’s into Anime, fantasy stories, werewolves, and dream catchers. She loves to laugh, binge watch Once Upon A Time, and is a junk food junkie.

Falling for Summer is her first published piece however, she has written another story that she used for her final school project. She’s now in the process of making it a series.

Author J.B. Morgan writes sweet romances with a good dose of humor, sensible heroines, good-decent guys, realism, and happily ever afters. After all, don’t we read to escape reality? So why not read what makes us feel good on the inside and puts a smile on our faces? This is what she strives to put into her novels.
Her debut novel, Holly Lane, landed her as a bestselling author in the Coming of Age genre, and her newest release is titled, Nate (A Texas Jacks Novel).
Growing up, she would dream up hero-rescuing stories in her head, revolving around the boys she had crushes on at school. Later in life she decided to try her hand at writing where she could get some of those ideas out of her head. She's definitely in love with the idea of love.
J.B. grew up in California, but now resides in Oregon where she’s a wife, mother, author, chocolate lover, and a Yankees fan. She also loves traveling the world. When she’s not writing, she can be found carting her kids everywhere, busy with volunteer work, or trying her hardest to read— without interruptions.
