Sweet Saturday Sample: What's Wrong With Her Feet?

Welcome to Sweet Saturday Sample. In last week's sample Prince Alan met his bride for the first time at their wedding reception. He found her beautiful, but he embarrassed her when he stared at her scarred face. We pick up where we left off last week. You can find more samples at http://www.sweetsatsample.wordpress.com

Blurb:
Forced by his father into a marriage he didn’t want, Prince Alan soon finds that his bride isn’t the sweet, submissive creature he expected. Morgane has the heart of a dragon and beauty beyond compare, but she isn’t thrilled about the marriage either. When black treachery threatens the kingdom, Morgane and Alan embark on a perilous journey that has an excellent chance of ending in failure and death for them and all of their people.

Excerpt:
Alan did not think she cared about the jewelry one way or

the other. Perhaps he had angered her when he stared at her face. "I

recommend that you try the roasted pork. The cook does a

wonderful job with it. I am told that it was fed with the finest grain

just for this occasion."

"Thank you. I will."

"And the fruit is fresh too. My father brought it across the

mountains."

"Thank you."

Alan tried to think of something else to say. Inspiration

struck as he sipped his wine. "Would you care for some wine?"

She hesitated for a moment, then said, "Yes, some wine

would be nice."

Alan picked up a wine bottle that stood on the table and

poured a glass for her. She immediately sipped it. Then his father

called to him, and when he next looked back, her glass was empty.

Her shoulders had relaxed a bit. Perhaps the wine had dulled the

pain in her feet. Without being asked, he refilled her glass.

The book is available at http://www.astraeapress.com and most other online retail outlets.

Blog Tour: Legal Ease

Readers, help me welcome Lori Ryan to the blog. Lori, I have to say that your book sounds really good.

Legal Ease: Sutton Capital Series, Book One

by Lori Ryan

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Jack Sutton needs a wife and he needs one now. Jack loved his mother, but she really screwed him over when she set up her will. If Jack doesn’t have a wife by the end of the week, he’ll lose control of the largest chunk of voting stock in his company and will most likely lose his position as CEO as a result.
And Jack’s Aunt Mabry is waiting in the wings to make sure that the terms of the will are enforced. If he doesn’t find a wife, she’ll seize control of the stock so she can install her own son at the helm and she couldn’t care less that her son doesn’t want the job or that he probably won’t be any good at it.
Enter Kelly Bradley, a twenty eight year old college graduate with a spot at Yale Law School but no way to pay for it. Kelly and Jack’s eavesdropping secretary have discovered Jack’s secret need for a wife and Kelly comes up with a plan to fix both of their problems.
Just when Jack needs her, Kelly breezes into his office, introduces herself to his Aunt and cousin, and hands Jack an offer. She will marry him for a year so that he can retain the stock that will keep him in control of Sutton Development if he’ll pay for her to go to law school. Jack has no idea where his beautiful savior came from or who she is but he’s willing to take a chance to save it all.
The deal may have kept Jack in control at Sutton Development but his private life quickly spirals out of control. Just when Jack realizes that he wants more than a year with Kelly, his wealth puts her in great danger and he is left scrambling to save her life and their future together.
Excerpt:
“We’re here to meet Jack’s fiancé,” a smug-looking Mabry announced to Chad and Jack watched a bemused expression come over his cousin’s face.
Chad had to be wondering what the hell was going on. He and Jack were more like brothers than cousins, so if Jack were getting married, Chad should have been the first to know.
Oh, shit. I’m never gonna’ hear the end of this from him.
So there they sat, waiting for an introduction to a fiancé that Jack had never mentioned to Chad and a fiancé that Chad had never set eyes on.
Jack leaned forward in his chair, took a deep breath and prepared to come clean. Just then his secretary’s voice cut in and he could swear he heard her say that his fiancé was here.
His head whipped around and he stared open-mouthed at the phone, unable to process what was going on. Jack’s experience in business had taught him to school his expressions and hide his thoughts from those around him and though he was shocked, he did just that. He quickly hid all emotion from his face as he listened to his secretary.
“Sir, did you hear me? Mr. Sutton? Your fiancé has just arrived. Shall I show her in?” Jennie spoke again.
Andrew. Andrew must have sent him a fiancé. How in the hell had Andrew found him a fiancé? I mean, how does one go about that, Jack thought. Oh God, what if Andrew sent him a prostitute?
The Perfect Duke
THE PERFECT DUKE
By
Dawn Ireland
BLURB:
Known as The Marble Duke amongst the Ton, Garret Weston, the Duke of Kendal sets himself apart from his peers. Nothing will hinder his guilt-driven attempt to become a perfect duke.  Nothing that is, save the alluring and imaginative betrothed he’d thought dead. His intended believes-of all things-that she is a Vicar’s daughter. The “perfect” duke needs a “perfect” duchess, but how was he to discern her suitability? Employing her as a governess to his niece seemed like an ideal solution. But whose “suitability” is being tested? His betrothed refuses to see he is beyond redemption. And most grievous of all, she stirs his blood, making him forget what’s important.
Cara believes fairy tales really can come true, until she meets the unrelenting and arrogant Duke of Kendal. He looks like a Prince, but acts like a Beast. Why must he challenge her at every turn? Her greatest peril is her attraction to the vulnerable, seductive man behind the title. A match between them would be impossible. But can she show him, without losing her heart, that “perfect” is in the eye of the beholder?
EXCERPT:
Garret’s voice stopped Cara before she reached the door. “What of the cut on my chest?”
She turned back, fighting to sound normal. “It didn’t look that bad.”
He picked up the cloth, soaped it, then stalked toward her. Everything about him belied fluid grace as he handed her the fabric, a challenge in his gaze.
 With as much indifference as she could muster, she dabbed at the cut on his chest.
“Harder,” he breathed, his dark velvet voice sending shivers down her spine. “You’ll not hurt me.”
She cleansed the cut, admiring the feel of the hard muscle beneath the cloth. Her fingertips extended beyond the material to caress his moisture-slicked skin. She stepped closer, until his chest was the only thing in her vision.
The rag dropped between them. Of their own volition her fingers spread, pressing her hands flat against the hard contours of his body. She began an exploration, noting the fine dusting of curling golden hair that tickled her palms as she moved them upward.
The smell of the ointment clung to him, but it couldn’t block his alluring scent, a mixture of brandy, wood, and spiciness. She inhaled deeply, savoring the heady combination as she ran one fingertip around his nipple, marveling at the pebbling on the outside edge.
Part of her brain acknowledged she shouldn’t be doing this, but she couldn’t seem to stop.
AUTHOR INFORMATION:
“Once Upon a Time” are four of Dawn’s favorite words. Her love of story became a love of romance when she read Georgette Heyer’s, Devil’s Cub. It inspired her to write stories with strong characters that discover love is never easy, but always worthwhile. Dawn’s written several award-winning novels set in Georgian England – an era filled with rules and intrigue. Her characters often defy “Society” as they pursue love, run away, pursue, run away – well, you get the idea.
Then again, she might write romance in order to do the research. What other profession encourages you to sit in the audience at Harlequin’s Male Model search, and take notes, or just sigh?
Dawn lives in a Victorian home in Upstate New York with her husband and very independent cats. When she’s not writing, she’s singing, gardening, learning to play the harp or wood carving. How I Got Him To Marry Me
HOW I GOT HIM TO MARRY ME
By
Cherise Kelley
BLURB:
He likes it. Now get him to put a ring on it! Learn from these 50 stories of women who have been there!
Sandy's boyfriend Jack wouldn't even bring up the 'm word'. She started leaving her things in his apartment, including some tampons in his bathroom. It worked! Too off guard to make excuses like "Living together is just as good as being married," Jack said, "People will start to think you're my wife!" "Well, how about it?" Sandy asked Jack.
Crystal got Paul to skip just living together by refusing to move across the country until she had a marriage license, signed and dated.
Read these full stories plus 48 more, ranging from the heartwarming to the hilarious!
You don't have to interview 50 married women to find out how they managed to get that ring on their finger. The author has done that for you. All 50 were married after 1990, so this is modern information for our changing times. Read and find out how you can get him to marry you and not just live together!
EXCERPT:
"I got tired of waiting for my boyfriend Jack to propose to me. We had been together for two years, and he hadn't even mentioned the 'm' word to me. If things had been left up to Jack, we would have been boyfriend and girlfriend for the rest of our lives. I had just turned thirty and could not wait much longer to be married. I knew I had to do something to push him along.
First, I tried giving him a taste of the good side of married life.
Jack was raised in a family where two people should not be together if they were not married. I could not just move myself in and wait for him to do the rest, as many of my girlfriends were doing with their boyfriends, in hopes of getting that 'm' word mentioned. I figured I had to slowly make myself a fixture in his apartment. When he got home from work, I would suggest going to his place instead of going out. I started to do some housework for him. I would tell him how messy his place was and offered to help him clean it up. I would wash the dishes and vacuum. After about two weeks of "giving him a taste of the good side of married life," nothing changed.
I even did the unthinkable and cleaned his bathroom. All I got for that was a "Thanks, I owe you one." I had to come up with another idea that was more intensive."
AUTHOR INFORMATION:
When Scott asked me to be his girlfriend, I surprised him by saying, "No." We were on the phone, as we were every night. I could tell he was hurt, but since we were on the phone and not together in person, we had to talk, and that was a good thing.
I explained, "I'm 30 years old. I've already had the last boyfriend I am ever going to have. In the future, I am going to have a husband, not a boyfriend."
He surprised me by taking this in stride. "I understand," he said. "You do realize I am in the Navy and all that entails?"
"I was born in the Navy!" This was true. My dad was in the Navy.
Four months later, he took me on a date to the top of the Space Needle in Seattle.
He passed me a little black velvet box under the table, and whispered:
"Babe, will you marry me?"
"Do you mean it?"
Yes, that's what I said. Not very romantic, was I?
Weekend Writing Warriors: Arranged Marriage
Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors. Last week I shared the opening sentences from my new release The Enchanted. In that excerpt my hero's father, the king, ordered him to marry a certain lady. He begged to be excused, but his father screamed for him to be silent. That is where we pick up today.
"I have respected your wishes for
three years now, but my patience is at an end. You will wed Lady
Maybina as I have commanded."
"Father, having married once for love, I have no desire to
marry a woman whom I have never met! Can you not understand?
Think of the love you share with my mother. Is it so bad that I
desire the same kind of relationship?"
The king's face turned purple, but he took a deep breath and
returned to sit upon his huge jewel-encrusted throne. He wiped his
face with a lace-trimmed handkerchief.
The Enchanted is available at most online retail outlets. You can find more lovely sentences from participating authors here.
Sweet Saturday Sample: Wedding Reception
Welcome to Sweet Saturday Sample. Last week Prince Alan met his bride Princess Morgane for the first time and found her beautiful. Today, we continue the scene at their wedding reception. The Sentence is available at most online retail outlets including Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/The-Enchanted-ebook/dp/B00CRUD242/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369440306&sr=8-1&keywords=the+enchanted+by+elaine+cantrell
Morgane seated herself beside him as he held out her chair.
Her skin looked as smooth as satin and as creamy as the finest
milk, but no one could miss the horrible red scar that marred her
face. She turned her head and caught him staring. Her face flushed
red, causing the scar to look that much worse. Turning away from
him, she fastened her eyes on the wall in front of her.
As Bowdyn signaled for the feast to begin, lively
conversations broke out all around the table. Alan gave a grim
inward chuckle. Someone should have a good time tonight. He turned
to Princess Morgane. ʺI hope that my wedding gift pleased you."
Morgane flexed the finger on which she wore the blue ring.
"It is very nice."
If you came for Fashionista Friday, scroll down after you check out the blog hop. You don't want to miss either one.
Welcome to the Love Blooms Blog Hop. I’m so glad to have you here at my blog. I hope you’ll feel free to look around and enjoy yourself because there’s something here for everyone. On Tuesdays, I do a feature called Beyond the Book. It's narrated by one of my characters who wants to tell what’s going on in his or her life after the book ended. On Friday, I post about fashion, and on Friday and Saturday you can read excerpts from my books. On other days I have guest authors, etc. In today’s hop you can win a $50 Amazon gift card. To enter go to a Rafflecopter giveaway    Now, I’d like to interview my newest hero, Prince Alan from The Enchanted. Prince Alan, it’s very kind of you to come.
Prince Alan: Not at all, Madame Cantrell. My father’s entire kingdom holds you in the highest regard and would do anything for you. The king and queen send you greetings and say to think you for attending the book release party in your honor.
Elaine: It was my pleasure. Readers, the party is over, but if you’ll scroll down to the May 14 entry you can see how the king honored me. You can also read chapter 1 of The Enchanted. Prince Alan, please tell the readers how you met the love of your life Princess Morgane.
Alan: (smiling): This is a subject dear to my heart, but it was not always so. My father arranged a marriage between me and Princess Morgane. I had never even met her.
Elaine: (looks appalled) That probably wasn’t much fun.
Alan: No indeed, yet I soon grew to love my princess with my whole heart. How could I not? She has the heart of a dragon and beauty beyond compare, but this is not what drew me to her.
Elaine: Really? What was it then?
Prince Alan: (His face softens; his eyes grow dreamy.) It was the noble kindness in her soul. She suffered much at the hands of her father, yet she remains brave, strong, tender, and kind. Anyone who knows her soon discovers her basic goodness. She is a friend to all, especially to me. Thanks to her love I am a better man.
Elaine: She did save your life twice, didn’t she?
Prince Alan: Indeed. If not for the princess who has no battle training whatsoever, I would now be dead. (He smiles proudly.) She does indeed have the heart of a dragon. I wish that you could talk to the warrior Renweard. He praises Princess Morgane all the day long.
Elaine: If I’m not being rude, tell me how you and your father are getting along. Things were once very tense between you.
Prince Alan: (nods) It is true that my father and I often did not see eye to eye, but the recent events in the kingdom have shown us that in spite of our differences, we care for each other.
Elaine: Did you ever paint that picture for Princess Morgane? You promised her a painting filled with sunshine on the day that you two were attacked and began your incredible journey.
Prince Alan: Yes, the painting is complete. Princess Morgane loves it. You may post a picture of it if you like.
Elaine: It’s beautiful. Is there anything else you’d like to tell my readers?
Prince Alan: (eyes twinkling) Tell them they may return soon to see the painting of my son or daughter.
Elaine: Wonderful! Congratulations to you and Princess Morgane.
Prince Alan: Thank you. My father the king is most gratified.
Elaine: Prince Alan, do come again soon.  To find other authors in the Love Blooms Blog Hop, look below, or go to http://www.candlelightreads.blogspot.com/p/love-blooms.html for the list.
Kidnapped Cowboy
Kidnapped Cowboy
by Lindsey Brookes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

After countless attempts to speak with the owner of the retreat for troubled teens she runs on the outskirts of Lone Tree, Montana, Caitlin Myers resorts to kidnapping Brandon ‘The Ogre of Lone Tree’ Barnes in a desperate attempt to change his mind about turning Stoney Brook into a vacation resort for the wealthy.

Retired rodeo star, Dalton Barnes, gets the surprise of his life when he’s abducted by a soft-spoken female with a ‘gun’ and taken to the retreat his family owns. He soon learns she’s kidnapped the wrong cowboy by mistake. She wanted his brother. Things go from bad to worse when a late spring snowstorm strands them together at the cabin. But it’s during their snow-in that Dalton learns why Caitlin has gone to such lengths to save Stoney Brook. Having had issues with his older brother himself and a not so happy past, Dalton promises to do what he can to help her.

When confronted Brandon tells Dalton he’ll hold off on his plans for the retreat, but only if Dalton agrees to stick around and help run it. Keeping his promise to Caitlin, Dalton agrees and what starts out as a common goal to turn the troubled teens’ lives around that summer ends up turning theirs around as well. Can a man who has always avoided putting down roots and a woman with a deep-seated fear of abandonment hang on to the happiness they’ve found together? Or will the past return to threaten their newfound love?

Love, laughter and a heartwarming read…

 EXCERPT

“D...don’t move or else.”

Dalton Barnes froze, one leg hiked up on the chrome running board of his brother’s truck, one hand curled snugly about the open door.  Being held up on the main street of Lone Tree, Montana, where crime was virtually nonexistent, was the last thing he expected to happen when he’d driven into town that evening for a couple of drinks.

No, make that being held up by a woman on the main street of Lone Tree.

“All right,” he said in the same calming tone he used when working with horses, “I won’t.”

If his assailant were a man he might have attempted to wrestle the gun away.  Instead, it was a female jabbing the barrel of her weapon into his back.  A nervous female at that if the trembling of her hand was any indication.  Not a good combination.

“Good.”  Her voice shook as much as her hand.

“If you’re after money, there’s about fifty bucks in my wallet.”

She let out what could only be described as an unladylike snort.  “That’s all?”

“Look,” he said, his patience slipping, “I can get more.  There’s an ATM machine across the street.  We can just take a walk on over there and I’ll get you whatever you need.”  He started to turn.

“D...don’t turn around,” she gasped, sounding panicked.

The barrel felt like a tree trunk pressing into his back. “I won’t,” he said, throwing up his hands.  “Just take it easy.”

“I don’t want your money,” she replied, sounding more shaken than he felt and that was saying a lot, considering he was the one with a gun barrel rammed into the center of his back.  “I want you.”

Okay, now that was unexpected.
