Beyond the Book: The Captain and the Cheerleader

Today's excerpt is from the book we've been previewing The Captain and the Cheerleader. To summarize, so far we know that Susan bet an irritating fellow teacher that she could make head football coach Kurt Deveraux ask her out. He did, and invited her to a party. In today's excerpt Susan and Kurt have arrived at the party.

Blurb:
Susan English can’t stand Robin Lanford! She’s so full of herself she irritates everyone on the faculty of Fairfield High. When Robin bets Susan fifty dollars that she can’t get a date with Kurt Deveraux, the head football coach, Susan jumps at the chance to put the little heifer in her place. She had no idea that teaching Robin a lesson would irrevocably change her life, strain treasured friendships, and throw two families into chaos.

Excerpt: Susan speaks first to Kurt.

“I don’t like what you said. (to their host)  I’m sure he thought we were lovers.”

Kurt shrugged. “I hope so. If they think you’re my woman, the single guys won’t be hitting on you.” His eyes twinkled. “I want you all to myself tonight with no competition.”

Susan thought for a moment. Naturally, she was flattered that he didn’t want to share her company with anyone else, but he shouldn’t have let Mr. Mendoza believe they were involved with one another. Oh, it probably doesn’t make any difference anyway. I doubt I’ll ever see any of the Mendozas after the party ends.

The Second Time Around

The Second Time Around
by Ella Quinn

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Can a beautiful Worthington widow find love again? Depends on who’s asking . . .

Before he died, Patience was the Earl of Worthington’s second wife. So why shouldn’t Patience be allowed a second chance at marriage, too? Of course, finding a new husband was not something the mother of four had ever planned on. But a surprise encounter with her first love has suddenly made the impossible seem possible all over again . . .

It seems like a lifetime ago that Richard, Viscount Wolverton, was halfway around the world, looking for adventure . . . while Patience, at her coming-out, was left with no choice but to take old Worthington’s hand. Richard never forgot the woman whose heart he yearned for—and now that he’s back, he’s not going to let her slip away again . . .

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Pulteney Hotel, London, 1815
“And this is Viscount Wolverton.” Patience Worthington watched as Almeria, Lady Bellamny, smiled as she introduced the gentleman to the Duchess of Bristol. Almeria turned her black eyes on Patience. The smile didn’t fade at all as she said, “Wolverton, I believe you have already met the Dowager Countess of Worthington.”
What in God’s name is he doing here? Patience inclined her head and held out her hand. “Indeed. The years have treated you well, my lord.”
Bowing, he took her fingers in his. “As they have done to you, my lady.”
His lips hovered over her hand as she prayed he would do nothing more than kiss the air above them, but no. The devil pressed his warm, firm lips to her knuckles; even through her gloves she could feel his touch and fought the urge to suck in a breath. “Thank you, my lord.”
One would think after all these years and his betrayal she would be immune to him. And one would be wrong. She held her breath, counting—One, two, three, four, five. Thank God—until he finally straightened and returned her hand to her. Thank God! Patience let out the breath, yet she could not control the pounding in her breast. It took all the control she had not to make an excuse and leave the room. Yet, she could not do that to Dotty Stern, soon to be the Marchioness of Merton.
“He has been a friend for a very long time,” Almeria continued, as if she had no idea of the havoc she had created by inviting Wolverton. “Though he hardly ever comes to Town.”
“Well, my dear,” Lord Bellamny said, “you couldn’t be here so often if it wasn’t for the help he gives me. Someone must assist me in my experiments.”
“Very true, my dear.”
Patience made the mistake of glancing up at the same moment Richard Wolverton stared down at her. His amber eyes smoldered as they had the last time she had seen him, only days before her marriage to the old Earl of Worthington.
Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors
Welcome to Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors, your chance to sample the work of a talented group of authors. When you finish here you can find more snippets at
We know so far that Rocky ticked off drug dealers and had to fake his death so he can enter the witness protection program. Last week Rocky called Aimee even though he wasn't supposed to and told her he'd bought a house for them. I'm skipping forward a few paragraphs to the time when Aimee is almost at Rocky's new house. She has car trouble, and is worried about how she'll get to Rocky's home. She's nervous about being stranded on a deserted road too. A man who knows her name comes riding down the road on a horse and speaks to her.
Excerpt:
“Why, Aimee Sherwood. What are you doing here?”
Aimee’s jaw dropped. “Cade McCoy, where did you come from?”
Cade laughed as he dismounted. “Remember that horse farm I was going to buy? It’s only a few miles down the road.”
Aimee stepped back as the horses nostrils flared. Ooo, they were pink inside. “He won’t bite, will he?”
So now we know that Cade McCoy is back in Aimee's life. Remember Cade helped Rocky and Aimee fake Rocky's death. Next week we'll see how this meeting goes.
Saturday Sample: Fortuna
Welcome to Saturday Sample. Last week we learned that Rocky had bought some property in West Virginia. Aimee agrees to come to West Virginia even though the witness protection people told her not to have contact with him for months. Aimee's car broke down, and to her surprise Cade McCoy comes down the road riding a big horse. He by chance moved into the same neighborhood as Rocky and agrees to take her to Rocky's house.
Last Week:
The horse snorted, distracting Aimee from her thoughts. “So, do you want that lift?” Cade asked.
“You mean on the horse?”
His lips twitched as his eyes danced. “Why not?”
Was he laughing at her? He was! He was laughing at her. “I don’t mind riding your horse,” she said, her chin going up as it always did when a challenge presented itself.
“Excellent.”
He swung up on the horse and extended his hand to her. “Put your foot in the stirrup, and I’ll pull you up.”
Aimee confidently stuck her foot in the stirrup and took his hand. She’d never been on a horse before, but how hard could it be? Just a little step up, right
Today's Excerpt:
Wrong. The horse was taller than she thought. As she floundered and scrambled against the animal’s side, Cade gave her arm a jerk and set her in place behind him. The minute the horse felt her weight it farted, a long, drawn-out expulsion of air that seemed to go on forever.
Cade laughed as if it was the most hysterical thing he’d ever heard. He turned around to say something, took a look at her face, and wisely decided to say nothing. She’d had to put her arms around him, and she still felt him shaking with laughter. Barbarian.
Blurb:
Aimee Sherwood never dreamed that following her fiancé into the witness protection pro-gram would land her in a haunted house in a town that’s downright creepy. She’d have laughed if she had been told the guy who lives down the road might be her soul mate, not the man whose ring she’s wearing. Life in West Virginia is nothing like life in Los Angeles, but between bean ball battles with Marilyn Monroe, remodeling a crumbling farmhouse, and starting a new online business, life in the country is anything but boring.
Survived By Brooklyn
Title: Survived by Brooklyn
Series: Brooklyn Series #3
Author: Elizabeth York
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: February 27, 2017
Brooklyn Montgomery hasn't had the easiest life or done things the easy way. Her stubbornness sometimes outweighs her intelligence and forces bad choices. She deals with those choices head on, moving forward until she finds herself back at square one with no one she can trust when a new threat comes for her.
Mark Stone, once took a bullet for Brooklyn. He always forgave her, even overlooked her flaws. He was always there to catch her when she fell, but when he forgets who she is and has to start over will he find he has the same patience for her? Can he keep the killer away from her without knowing all the details?
What happens when both Brooklyn and Mark go missing? Will they be found, or will they be planted six feet under a field of forget-me-nots.
“Has Brooklyn ever been a victim to him?”
“You could fill a couple books about her interactions with him,” Jax spoke as if I should remember, but I didn’t. His comment opened a door and I was instantly flooded with questions starting with why she never told me about any of this.
“All the victims have things in common, but do we know how he chooses them?”
It was the silence from the men that told me I had chosen the one question no one wanted to ask. I knew they all had similar features, but where did he find them all?
I had to prepare myself before I turned back to the victim and looked at the woman’s face. When I finally did, I noticed the pale alabaster skin that was flourished with the torture she endured. Her long black hair was recently cut and worn just like Brooklyn. Her fingers told a story of a woman who was happily married even though her band was missing. This one was just like the others, but her clouded over blue eyes reminded me of -
“Brooklyn,” I yelled as I took a knee. She was wearing the same silver noose on a chain around her neck that she played with at the hospital. I picked it up as Jax made his way back to me.
She had the same eyes that I looked into when we talked, the same hair that I used to toy with when she laid next to me. She had the same skin color, that would flourish in rose patches when she would get excited. Everything about her was identical to Brooklyn.
“How long has she been dead?” I stood up and demanded to know. “Why wasn’t I notified?”
“Come on,” Jax growled as he tried to push me away.
“Why wasn’t I notified?” I demanded an answer as I fought back.
“Let’s take a walk,” Jax tried to move me, and other officers came to join him.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?” I needed to know.
