Calling all Neighbors

CALLING ALL NEIGHBORS, I decided to contact all the neighbors who lived at the end of our cul-de-sac. I contacted the neighbor next door on our right, the one who lived on the left, the neighbor across the street, and the family who lived next door to the mistress' house. I invited them over one bright, sunny Saturday morning around 11 am to have a little pow-wow. I set out kitchen chairs for each of the five neighbors that attended my little impromptu gathering. I positioned myself in front of the kitchen sink and explained that I had news and they needed to hear it from me to avoid any misunderstanding.

After explaining the discovery of my husband's affair with our neighbor, two women began crying. One neighbor stated that the mistress had been committing adultery for years. She was known for cheating on her husband. They were upset because they didn't think it was fair that I was the one losing my spouse. They explained that her husband was clueless about his wife's scandalous behavior.

I told them that I was sharing the information because they would no longer see James coming and going from our home. I let them know that we were getting a divorce and that I was moving to Atlanta.

For the Love of Faith

For the Love of Faith
by Tricia McGill

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Australian Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

At almost seventeen Faith Boswell knows little about the world beyond the lodging house in Ballarat owned by her widowed mother. The mining town of Ballarat in 1860 is populated by those seeking to get rich by finding gold, so their residents are mostly miners on their way to the diggings with high hopes of finding this highly treasured substance. Sadly, Faith’s Ma is not the easiest person to get along with and Faith often wonders just why her mother is so bitter.

Things start to change unexpectedly one day when a stranger appears at the door of their home—a gentleman who mysteriously seems to know a lot about Faith’s Ma, her past life, plus Faith herself. Faith fears that her mother has been lying to her all her life. From that day Faith’s life takes a turn, perhaps for the better. One long-term lodger is a widow who unexpectedly presents Faith with an unusual birthday gift. This gift causes uproar which plays a large part in Faith’s life from them onwards.

Because Faith knows little about life outside of her sheltered existence, she is unable to fathom if handsome Walter Finch, son of the nearby store owners, has real feelings for her or is simply being kind. Faith is soon to find out just how willing he is to help her as she sets out on a new and scary phase in her life.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
Faith quickened her pace as she neared the store, her Ma’s list clutched in her hand. This visit had become the highlight of her week, for the anticipation reached a level she could not understand. She sincerely hoped that the owner’s son, one Walter Finch would be working behind the counter. The store contained everything from cooking ingredients for the women, to shovels and hats for the men working out at the diggings, and had taken on a new pleasure in the past few months. She was at a loss to understand quite why this should be.
Previously Walt had barely passed the time of day with her until one morning as she handed her list over to George Finch, his son had come out of the back room, wiping his hands on a scrap of rag. “Finished out there, boy?” his father asked and with a nod Walt came towards Faith and smiled—and her heart was lost as he asked after her welfare and made some comment on her appearance that completely took her aback. Until that morning, no lad of similar age had shown the slightest interest in her and certainly not in her state of health.
Suddenly the one who now seemed to fill her thoughts far too often was striding towards her. Too late to step from the firmer path that had been laid down in front of the shops to protect the boots of the ladies, and to head across the street.
My Review
I found For the Love of Faith to be an enjoyable read, and if you like historical romance I think you'll like it too. Here are some things I thought were well done.
1.Faith is an appealing heroine. She's helped her Ma in their boarding house ever since she was small, and even though her Ma gave little sign of loving her, Faith did what she was told. She wonders why her mother is so bitter and unloving, but she has no answers. Affection comes to her through the boarding house cook.
2.Walt our hero is gallant, handsome, and true. He has big dreams that he hints he would like to share with Faith.
3.Faith's mother isn't a sympathetic character, but she has dimension. She does just enough nice things for Faith that the reader wonders what has happened to her.
4.The plot is good. Who hasn't wanted to spread their wings and have adventures?
5.The language  is good too.It definitely sounds like a different time in history, but it doesn't distract from the story.
6.There's a nice element of suspense that pulls the reader in. There are some secrets too.
There was one thing I didn't think rang true, but maybe it would have in the 1860s. If my children disappeared in the night, and I had no idea where they were for weeks on end I wouldn't be sitting at home doing nothing about finding them. It wouldn't matter to me what I had going on. I'd go find those kids.
All in all, I liked the book, and I'm glad I had the chance to read it. I recommend it without reservation.
The Anchor
The Anchor
by Kevin R. Doyle
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
The Anchor: Jen has toiled away in television news, just waiting for a big break. And at the same time she finally gets a shot at the promotion opportunity she’s waited years for, head anchor for the nightly newscast, an unseen, shadowy man is desperate for her to notice him. When messages and well wishes don’t do the trick, her mysterious admirer intends to do anything necessary to make Jen a success and snare her attention, even if it means attacking her fiancé and killing off her competition.
EXCERPT
“Package for you,” Aldiss said.
Jen looked down at the plain wrapped bundle lying on her desk.
“Jack do something to make up for?” her deskmate asked.
Jen puffed in exasperation and plopped into her chair.
“What hasn’t he done?” she replied.
Aldiss chuckled and bent over his computer screen.
“How long have you and I shared a desk?” she asked.
“A year or so, give or take,” Aldiss replied, looking up.
“Uh huh. And how long have I been seeing Jack?”
“That you’ve admitted to? Seems like running on a year.”
“Eleven months.”
“Close.” Her coworker turned away and went back to his work.
Jen tapped her fingers on her desk and stared at the bundle. It had a small card attached, but without raising the flap and reading it, it looked like some sort of generic message-type thing.
“And when’s the last time he’s sent me a gift at work?”
Aldiss grinned.
“What’s the package say?” he asked.
“You didn’t look?”
“Hey, bunky, I believe in privacy.”
“Some reporter you are.”
She glanced at the package again, noted that it had come from FedEx, and assumed Tammy had signed for it up at the front desk. Then she flipped the front flap on the little card open.
“Hmm.”
Aldiss glanced up from his work but didn’t say anything.
Jen snared some scissors out of her desk and cut the paper open.
“Obviously, somebody thinks my current diet’s unnecessary.”
He looked up again, his brows raised.
Jen held up a box of Russell Stover chocolates.
“Card not from him?”
Jen shook her head.
“Say who it’s from?”
She held the card up eye level.
“In appreciation of all your service to the community,” she recited.
“Doesn’t sound like a new lover.”
“I hope not. I’d like to think I’d know if I was seeing someone new.”
Aldiss furrowed his brow.
“You done any story lately that’s been big time?”
Jen half glared at him.
“Meaning?”
Aldiss spread his hands out in a placatory gesture.
“Hey, nothing personal. I’m just curious what they mean by service to the community.”
Jen glanced down at the card for a second before looking back up.
“Maybe it’s just a fancier way of saying ‘I like your work.’”
“Or maybe it’s just some creeper who’s got a thing for you. After all, it wouldn’t be the first time a hot news anchor had an admirer.”
Grinning, Jen picked a paper clip off her desk and flipped it at him.
“Far as that goes,” she snorted, “wouldn’t be the first time for me.”
Aldiss picked the clip up from where it had fallen on his desk and tossed it back her way.
“Just imagine if they end up giving you Karyn’s nighttime slot. They’ll be coming out of the woodwork.”
“Thanks,” Jen said. “I’m doing my best not to think of that.”
A Word With the Author
 1.Did you always want to be an author?
            Not really. I always enjoyed reading and was pretty good with words and language. When I was in elementary school, I was already reading such authors as Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Bram Stoker, and Mary Shelley. Then I got into people like Arthur C. Clarke, and I was very impressed with Clarke’s “The Star,” still my single favorite short story of all time. But I didn’t really consider writing myself until one day, at nineteen, when I got bored and started fiddling around on the family’s typewriter.
2.Tell us about the publication of your first book.
            My first book was a novelette originally published in e-book form by Vagabondage Press. It came out in 2012, and a new version is now available from The Wild Rose Press. It’s interesting that it holds the rank of “first” because it’s vastly different from most of my work. Whereas I write almost exclusively in mystery and horror, it’s an example of what the original publisher called “rock fiction.”
3.Besides yourself, who is your favorite author in the genre you write in?
            While there’s a lot of good candidates, for me in the mystery field it’s Lawrence Block hands down.
4.What’s the best part of being an author? The worst?
            The best would be the sheer pleasure of spending large amounts of time, in some cases up to a year or more, working on a particular narrative and being able to type that last period and know that you’ve completed something.
            The worst? Probably spending all that time and effort only to have sales and readership figures more, shall we say, modest than one would hope.
5.What are you working on now?
            I have a contract with Camel Press to continue the Sam Quinton series through number six. Earlier this fall all the edits and such were completed on number four, Clean Win, which is due out in March. With the completion of Clean Win, I’d somehow managed to write, start to finish, five books in three years. I took a few months downtime during which I focused only on teaching, but now with Christmas break upon us I’m ready to start working on Quinton #5, which I hope to have completed by the end of the summer. I’m retiring at the end of this school year, so my writing schedule should accelerate some.
A Gift of Books
 I know that I’ve posted this article before, but I post it every year either here or at my blog. I think it’s important, and I’d just like to remind everyone that books make great Christmas gifts. I promise you I’m giving books this Christmas. Anyway, here’s my article.
Besides being an author, I was a social studies teacher at our local high school. Some years before I retired, I noticed something very unusual going on in my first period class. I was standing in front of the class discussing feudalism with the kids, but three of the girls weren’t listening to me. Not that they always listened to me, mind you, but these girls weren’t talking. They weren’t passing notes, sleeping, or trying to do their homework before it was due. So, what were they doing? They were reading.
Yes, reading, and yes, it’s a very big deal. The majority of my students said they didn’t care for reading. They said it was boring. Almost, I don’t blame them. If I never read anything but textbooks, I’d think reading was boring too.
Okay, they don’t read. Is that a problem? You bet it is! Many literacy skills don’t get developed including reading comprehension, and let’s face it; people who read understand a whole lot more about what’s going on in the world. They score better on standardized tests too, and of course all of you readers know how reading can enrich your life.
The girls were reading Twilight. I asked them if it was good, and you should have heard them carrying on. One of them told me she’d never read an entire book in her life until she started Twilight. She was almost finished with it and already had New Moon (sequel) ready to read. I was so intrigued I bought a copy of Twilight that very day.
I did like the book, but more importantly it impressed on me the need to provide young people with books they can enjoy, books that’ll make readers of them. So, this Christmas please consider a gift of books for any young adult or child on your list. In the long run it’ll be of more use to them than another sweater, video game, or electronic device.
It still isn't too late to purchase a few books for the reader in your family. If they read electronic books you can give one with only a few clicks.
Read an Excerpt
“Watch your left!” shouted the leader of the golden eagles. Before the angel could maneuver to his right, blinding lightning struck across the dark clouds, just missing his left wing. The very next moment, deafening thunder numbed everything. The angel and the accompanying eagles held their nerves and pushed through the expanding wall of clouds. The leader of the eagles anticipated growing dangers and feared they would get lost. He yelled, “I can’t help you if I can’t see where we are going. The storm is escalating into a tornado. We won’t be able to withstand these powerful winds for long. Everyone, move up above the thunderstorm. We’ll resume our journey from there.”
The angel and the eagles listened to the leader’s call and flew up above the clouds. Looking down on the thundering clouds, the leader took a deep sigh of relief. He quickly turned his head toward the others to check their condition. “What happened to your wings?” the shocked leader screamed at the angel.
The angel looked instinctively on his sides. There were no wings but flapping arms. A sudden gush of panic infused in him as he realized he was just a boy and not an angel. Right away, the horrified boy fell into the dark mushrooming clouds, screaming from the bottom of his gut. His arms and legs kept flailing in despair until he disappeared into the dark swirling storm.
Beyond the Book: Christmas Presents
 What are the two best Christmas presents you ever received?
I hope everyone has been reading the blog this week. Our Monday and Tuesday foxes have some great memories to share, and I definitely agree that the best gifts are the intangible gifts, the ones that warm your heart for your entire lifetime. But this was my topic so I’m going to focus on gifts.
Probably the number one gift was a horse. I was horse crazy as a girl and begged so hard for a horse of my own. I finally got her when I was in the fifth grade. I was sick that Christmas morning, and ice covered the ground, but I didn’t care because of the note we found under our tree. It’s not good poetry, but the note said, Roses are red, violets are blue, in Larry’s barn is something for you. I got dressed in minutes flat and Daddy took us to Larry’s barn where we found a pretty palomino mare that I named Stardust. I insisted on riding her bareback to the stream for water, and I slid off her and knocked my breath out. Not too great a beginning to my career as a horsewoman!
It didn’t matter. All that mattered was that she was mine. For many years I rode her almost every day. I’d come home from school, saddle up, and away we’d go. I usually didn’t stop riding until dark. It’s something I’ll remember until the day I leave this world. Actually, not long ago I had a dream about riding. I could feel the horse’s muscles moving beneath me, giving me the urge to ride until we were both tired. I felt slightly bereft when I woke up and realized it was only a dream. I can’t ride now, though. I got old and my back is too bad to ride. If not for that I’d have a pretty mare, and we’d go on adventures together. We might even talk my husband into joining us even though he’s not much of a horse person.
Actually, my second gift pales in comparison to that pretty mare so I think I’ll wrap it up now. It did have something to do with horses, though.
I hope everyone has had the pleasure of a gift that brought so much joy into their life. If you have, I’d love to hear about it.
Call Me Obie
Call Me Obie
by Ateret Haselkorn
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   YA Science Fiction

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Fifteen-year-old Obie hates the word “artificial.” It has to be the Most Misunderstood Word of the Year 2100. The media puts it in front of anything. They started with artificial intelligence and now it goes with housing, law enforcement, and in Obie’s case, her heart.
Just because Obie’s vital organ was 3D-printed doesn’t mean that she’s fake. She’s simply misunderstood, especially by Humanists. They think that artificial organ recipients like her are an abomination, and that’s why Obie can’t let anyone know the truth about her heart.
But when Humanists injure her best friend Mateo, Obie needs to step up. She decides to get him a 3D-printed replacement spleen in secret. In order to succeed, she becomes a black-market criminal, a high-tech healer, and an authority on love (or maybe not the last one so much). But what else can she do when organs are sold by Jonas, a blue-eyed genius who can’t stand the system any more than her?
Call Me Obie explores the future of discrimination and the timeless power of empathy and forgiveness, with a few comedic mishaps along the way. It is the tale of one young woman’s coming-of-age in a future where nearly anything is medically possible and society must ask: When technology can modify humans, who gets to decide how?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

Now, believe me, bullies can figure out how to get to their targets digitally, but I think that having to go to an in-person school delivers us right into the lion’s den. That’s actually how Mateo and I met, back in the seventh grade. I was gliding along, minding my business in my shiny new hover sneakers—even though I promised my dad that I’d walk for some traditional exercise—when my comm device vibrated with an environmental disturbance alert. It said there was a hazard above me. I looked upwards, scanning the treetops and clouds, and spotted a black, sharp-edged and bird-shaped drone the size of my hand. It flew straight up, reversed direction, and then dove down over and over. As I got closer to it, I heard yelling each time it dropped out of my line of sight. Weird. . . When I got to the school’s quad, I saw a thin, golden-skinned boy about my age running around screaming and waving his hands above his head, doing his best to fend off the attack. The hunting drone kept diving to hit him on the forehead with its beak. Every time the boy was down, as in lying on his stomach and moaning, the drone flew up. And whenever the boy shakily stood, it swooped down and jabbed him again. When I reached him, he was resting face down with his bleeding forehead pressed against his forearms.

“Are you okay?” I asked him.

A Word With the Author

  1. Did you always want to be an author?
    1. I’ve always felt a natural urge to write stories. As a highly sensitive person, I notice and feel aspects of my environment easily. Some may call this inspiration, I call it an absorptive way of life. Eventually, these whispers of people and events experienced over time become my “mental storage container.” They combine into a larger perception of the world at hand – how it operates today, how people behave within it, and how these trends may translate into a future that is both of our design and out of our hands. Writing, for me, was never about becoming an author as much as making sense of our system and then sharing that sense with others in order to form a connection. Writing can, at once, provide a sense of orientation and reduce isolation. This is ironic because the act of writing can be extremely isolating but, in the end, I think storytelling draws us all closer.
  2. Tell us about the publication of your first book.
    1. Call Me Obie is my first book. Obie’s story was inspired by multiple experiences I had over the years working in the healthcare industry and studying the technology firsthand. For example, I got the chance to use VR goggles to virtually ‘walk’ inside a heart with a congenital defect. It was amazing. Then, after the 2016 election, I read an op-ed by a man who said that hiding his vote for President Trump reminded him of masking his sexual orientation earlier in his life. This made me wonder what the ‘closet’ of the future would be. Finally, when Israeli researchers reported creating a 3D-printed heart, I had the main elements of the world I wanted to build for Obie, a young woman with a 3D-printed heart experiencing discrimination over medical treatment. I am very excited to share her story with readers!
  3. Besides yourself, who is your favorite author in the genre you write in?
    1. I am a huge fan of Kazuo Ishiguro. He can seamlessly crosses multiple genres like science fiction, fantasy, and classic literature. He can also pen characters who are somehow at once dehumanized and yet extremely human in a way that makes me reevaluate what it means to live a moral life. My favorite Ishiguro titles are Never Let Me GoRemains of the Day, and Klara and the Sun
  4. What's the best part of being an author? The worst?
    1. The best part? When Call Me Obie arrived at my home, my niece picked up a copy, got into a hammock, and started reading. She reminded me very strongly of myself as a young reader, and it gave me a wonderful feeling to think that she was fully engaged in a world I had built. The worst part of being an author is the constant feeling that I could or should be writing when I’m completing other tasks like grocery shopping or going to bed at a reasonable time.
  5. What are you working on now?
    1. I am writing a science fiction mystery novel that takes place in a “smart” city. And I’m reading as many mysteries as I can, both sci fi and not, because it’s the best way to learn a genre.

Thank you for taking the time to interview me!
