Babe in the Woods

Babe in the Woods

by Jude Hopkins

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Women's Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

It’s September 1995, the first year of the rest of Hadley Todd's life. After living in Los Angeles, Hadley returns to her hometown in rural New York to write and be near her father. In addition to looking after him and teaching high school malcontents, Hadley hopes to channel her recent L.A. heartbreak into a play about the last moment of a woman’s innocence. But she seeks inspiration.

Enter Trey Harding, a young, handsome reporter who covers sports at the high school. Trey reminds Hadley of her L.A. ex and is the perfect spark to fire up her imagination. The fact that Trey is an aspiring rock star and she has L.A. record biz connections makes the alliance perfect. She dangles promises of music biz glory while watching his moves. But the surprising twist that transpires when the two of them go to Hollywood is not something Hadley prepared for.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
“Have you ever fallen in love?”
He winked at her. “All the time.”
She’d have the last word, something she realized was important to her. “I think it’s wrong, all these women you lead on. Don’t you? I mean, they may get attached, fall for you. But you seem to use them, to see what you can get out of them for your own purposes. I think that’s wrong, They’re human beings, after all. With feelings.”
He turned around, his eyes drained of any light. “They use me, too. It’s not like they’re not getting anything out of it.”
“What am I getting out of this?” she asked him, if not rhetorically.
He stood on one hip, a move that made him appear more rakish than usual. “I really don’t know, Miss Todd. I wondered that myself. I thought perhaps you were bored or intrigued. Or maybe you’re a control freak.” He took a step toward her so he was within half an inch of her face. “Or maybe you’re just like the rest and can’t resist me.”
Hadley stood her ground. “How do you know when it’s over? The moment when love, or lust, turns into something else. Something not as passionate?”
“I don’t think about it,” he said, returning her gaze. “It’s something that happens. Maybe it’s not one moment. It just is.”
He turned around and walked out of the room.
A Word With the Author
1.Did you always want to be an author?
Yes! I was an obsessive reader growing up and, many years later, extended that love of reading into getting a B.A and M.A. in English. I taught English at various universities, but I was always preparing lesson plans and grading papers when I wanted to be writing. But I made the time and eventually finished the novel. It’s all about priorities. As a child, I would create “books” and fill in the pages with my crayon text. It was always in the back of my mind to write a book, and I did, Babe in the Woods, after working on it for many, many years.
2.Tell us about the publication of your first book.
Interestingly enough, my novel started out as a self-help book using Scarlett O’Hara as the hook. But I always ran into problems, so I felt the self-help genre wasn’t meant for this project. So, I turned it into a novel, scrapping most of my Scarlett references, and it flowed much better. I sent it out to many agents, got some interest, but all of them told me my protagonist, Hadley Todd, was too negative. So I softened her, gave her more backstory, and my book sold shortly after I did so. I still had the book “out” at several agents before I accepted a contract with a small press, which was the thrill of my life.
3.Besides yourself, who is your favorite author in the genre you write in?
Tough question because I don’t only read in that genre. I enjoyed Writers & Lovers by Lily King and The Life of the Mind by Christine Smallwood. And I read Emma Barry’s Funny Guy, a romance novel, just to see how she handled a “negative” character (very well, I must say). My friends are urging me to read Lessons in Chemistryby Bonnie Garmus, so that’s probably next. I read a lot of the classics and also non-fiction. Writers should read widely and deeply, I believe.
4.What's the best part of being an author? The worst?
Because a lot of people harbor a secret desire to write a novel, I believe the best part of being an author is to actually become one of those people. For me, getting my book traditionally published was definitely on the list of things to do in my life, so I can now tick that off. I loved the excitement surrounding the process: the cover art sent to me by my publishing company, the first time I saw the galleys to edit, etc. And, of course, the wonderful day it actually became available. An incomparable thrill. The worst part is the wait and the work—a lot of editing. And the reviews—they are always some people who don’t like it. But I saw a meme on Twitter the other day that I hope to remember: “You can’t make everyone happy. You are not pizza.”
5.What are you working on now?
I have started a second novel, the idea of which I’m not going to divulge. I thought I had a great idea, but I saw an old movie recently (long after I started the book) that had a similar premise and thought I’d have to scrap my idea. But, of course, that’s silly because the execution of that idea is so different. Besides, as the old saying goes, “There’s nothing new under the sun.” So, onwards I go.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Jude Hopkins has published essays in The Los Angeles Times, Medium, the belladonna—and poetry in various journals including Gyroscope Review, Timber Creek Review and California Quarterly. She is currently working on her first novel, Babe in the Woods.
It has always been her desire to write. She was featured in Dickinson College’s literary magazine when she was an undergraduate. One poem in particular, Mixed Metaphors,” contrasted two viewpoints in a lakeside scene: one of a romantic young woman who thought the wind was blowing through her hair like an Aeolian harp; the other, that of her suitor who believed the water looked as cold as hell. Ah, love’s different sensibilities! What she lost in that relationship, she gained from her sojourn at Dickinson, earning her Phi Beta Kappa key while there, as well as a desire to continue her education.
Then it was on to graduate school at Arizona State University where studying for her master’s degree in English and grading essays as a teaching assistant took most of her time (and partying — it was ASU, for Pete’s sake). However, she did have a germ of an idea for a self-help book that she began outlining, fueled by many a Thermos bottle of Dunkin’ coffee.
It wasn’t until she moved to L.A. that she thought about writing a proposal for that self-help book. She got some bites from agents. Top agents. But working three jobs took precedence. (One of those jobs was at a Hollywood record company where she met a Beatle, among other artists.)
When she finally moved back to Pennsylvania, she began seriously writing again, squeezing in time to pen some poems between endless essay grading at one of the University of Pittsburgh’s branch campuses. As an adjunct English instructor, Jude was uncompromising on what she expected from her students, knowing they were capable of achieving great things when challenged, but she tried to balance the hard work with humor. Nevertheless, she knew that discipline and knowledge could turn even the most reluctant student into a pretty good writer. To achieve that end, the cellphones had to be put away, and attention had to be paid. The result? Some model research papers and essays from memorable students (she taught English in Pennsylvania, New York state, California and Arizona).
The need to write something besides comments on student essays gnawed at her. One day, she took out her old self-help book manuscript from a cobwebby drawer and began the process of turning it into a novel. That novel became “Babe in the Woods” and will be traditionally published by Wild Rose Press sometime in 2023. She blogs about that novel, so, readers, please follow her blogs as she updates everyone on the book's progress. Please also check out her essays and poems, also featured herein.
Beyond the Book: Book Review Lighthouse Burning.
Blurb:
In a small Appalachian town, an amateur detective unearths a dark conspiracy and his own haunted past, in a chilling novel about sacrifice, art, and revenge.
Med school dropout Harlan Winter returns to his impoverished West Virginia hometown, where the law is scarce, arsonists are turning everything to ash, and his family’s turbulent history lingers. All he wants is to keep the peace in a community cowering from The Lighthouse, a local cult preying on people’s fears. Harlan’s own fears, too, when he’s hired to play detective and find a young couple gone missing.
The vanished artist and his girlfriend have left behind a series of paintings that enrage The Lighthouse’s Pastor Logan, who believes art can have divine power. It’s not easy to believe for a rational man like Harlan. And impossible to ignore when his investigation is haunted by visions of the dead lurking in the shadows of his own violent past.
Revelations about the disappearances are being unearthed. The Lighthouse’s grip on the community is tightening. And Harlan fears he’s losing control. As the threats against his town, his sanity, and his life begin to mount, Harlan doesn’t know which is more terrifying: what’s real, or what’s in his mind.
My Review:
Lighthouse Burning is set in a West Virginia coal town, and when the coal played out, the town started to die. There are so many social and mental problems that it’s hard to know where to start the review. At the top of the list is the economy. Without work people can’t buy food so there’s some bartering going on. People are living in tents, and Heaven help them if they need a doctor. Harlan our hero left medical school without a degree, and the local people consult him if they are ill or hurt. Sometimes he tells them that they need to go to the hospital, but they don’t go. Even if the doctor prescribed medicine they don’t have the money to buy it.
Law and order have virtually disappeared. A group called the Lighthouse, a true cult, is the real power in the town. They carry guns and never smile so they usually get their way. People are scared of them.Their leader a former minister is determined to maintain his power at all cost.
Juvenile delinquency is rampant. Harlan had a couple of vending machines that were vandalized and destroyed by two teens. They later regret their actions because they didn’t know Harland and had no idea of this identity. When they found out they apologized saying that they didn’t know he was deserving of so much respect.
Harlan’s family is so dysfunctional that it would take me a long time to tell you everything. He grew up in poverty, and lived with his father and uncle who were brutal to him. They made him learn to fight from an early age, and as an adult his hands aren’t extremely functional. Worse yet, they equated brutality with strength and superiority. Harlan often referred to the rush it gave him to beat up an opponent. His father and uncle are no strangers to prison. On the day that Harlan goes to the prison to pick up his uncle they stop at a bar where he shot a man. Later, he’ll murder two people in Harlan’s home.
There’s also an element of the supernatural woven through the book, and it isn’t a benign force.
Mental illness? Yes, the book has that too.
So what did I think of the book? It’s too dark for me. Only one character had a few redeemable qualities, and she got murdered. All of the people were violent, angry, and dangerous. If I had known anything much about the book I never would have read it. Frankly, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. The darkness is just too much for me. I know things like that exist in the world, but I don’t need my nose rubbed in it.
What about you? Have you read a book that you found very distasteful?
In 1955, a group of uncommon people meet by chance. During the final year of Rákosi’s iron fist rule, Imre Nagy’s reforms are repealed, plunging Hungary back into economic ruin.
How far will they go to save Hungary?
Well-researched, politically charged and fast-paced, 1956 Love & Revolution will lure you into the lives of everyday Hungarians who risked everything for their country.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

It was August 1955, and Elona was tired. She grabbed her bucket and wrung out the mop one last time. She had been cleaning at the theatre all night, and it was now early dawn. Something about the purple-lightening skies always enchanted her. Budapest was a quiet city at 4:30 am, almost peaceful. But Hungary was nothing close to peaceful lately. So many things were happening in her country that it made her stomach churn. Politics wasn’t something she was keen on, but lately, it seemed every Hungarian held hope that their country would reinstate a more economically-sound government.

They lived through so many years of repression, paying exorbitant taxes for Hungary's industrialization and war reparations to Russia, among so many other fees, that every single Hungarian paid almost two-thirds of their income out to the government. This left so little for food, cigarettes or anything else. It was a tough life of constantly working with little chance of enjoyment.

Elona was only twenty-one years old, but she felt like she was eighty.

She stepped outside onto the dark street and turned back to lock the theatre doors. Her pail and mop were already beside the door when she noticed she had left the dirty water in the bucket. She sighed and cursed softly. Elona was not going to open up the heavy double doors again and return all the way to the other side of the washrooms to dump her bucket.

She pushed the keys deep inside her pants pocket and picked up the pail gently, sneaking to the alleyway. Elona tiredly tipped her bucket in the alleyway, dumping it upside down to empty it completely so she could return home with a much less heavy pail. She didn’t drive, and her bicycle broke, so she didn’t even have that luxury anymore. A headache started at her temples, and she massaged her face gently. Maybe, one day things will get better.

She looked up as male voices echoed down the street. She wondered who would be in the streets at this hour. There wasn’t much crime because of the state police, so she usually had nothing to fear.

Then a chill ran down her spine.

A Word With the Author

1. Did you always want to be an author? Yes, I always felt the stories alive within me, like an artistic draw of nature leading me to eventual destruction lol.

2. Tell us about the publication of your first book. My first book was published way back in April 2020. It was definitely a learning curve but it was an exhilarating experience finally bringing my dreams into reality.

3. Besides yourself, who is your favorite author in the genre you write in? Ken Follett is my fav author in historical fiction. I draw much of my experience from his works, even though, my books are much different in length lol (300 pages) and are quicker to read within a few days. I have always wanted to write a mammoth book of 1000 pages like Ken Follett but I discovered that I am an underwriter, not an overwriter, so this likely will never happen lol. But, I do write amazing series and trilogies.

4. What is the best part of being an author? The worst? I would say the best part of being an author is writing the first draft. This is the most artistic and engaging task, where I immerse myself within the characters' everyday lives and become one with them. It is an amazing experience every time! The worst? I would say copyediting is the worst lol. I approach it with the enthusiasm of working a tough job that nobody wants to do. But I do get it done and surprisingly I work at it 8 hours a day, blocking out an entire week focusing on just the task of copyediting. My brain is mush by the end lol.

5. What are you working on now? I just released my latest book, 1956 Love & Revolution, so I normally devote my time after a new release to book signings, book trailers, appearances and book tours like this one! The next book on my schedule is an American/Canadian family saga war trilogy starting in 1812. I will begin this saga in August/Sept 2023, release date of Book One should be in Spring 2024.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

J. A. Boulet is the passionate author of five historical fiction novels. Her newest novel, 1956 Love & Revolution, is a chilling standalone book about the 1956 Hungarian uprising. A highly anticipated release scheduled for June 5, 2023, this is a book that the author holds close to her heart.

J. A. Boulet was raised in the aftermath of the Hungarian Revolution. Her father was a Hungarian soldier who fought bravely during the 1956 uprising. He escaped and was granted asylum in Canada. Ms. Boulet’s mother also fled from the revolution shortly after. The couple met, fell in love and built a family in Saskatchewan.

J. A. Boulet was born decades later. Raised in a refugee family with strong morals has provided J. A. with the foundation to which she has stood behind all her life. Ms. Boulet began writing poetry at a very young age and progressed to short stories and novels easily. She quickly became a history geek and became fascinated with ancestry and the rough path of immigration. J. A. published her first book in 2020 and has since published one to two books annually. She writes with an unsettling realism, grabbing your emotions and refusing to let go. 1956: Love and Revolution is a book you won’t be able to put down.

Beyond the Book: Inspiration Comes From Culture

“Have you ever used real-life events from the news or from history as central scenes in your stories?”

I believe that all authors use both current evens and history in their writing. How could they not? Authors are a part of the culture in which they live, and that culture includes both the present and the past. A quick look at the components of culture explains more.

Culture of course is defined as the shared products of human groups including both material items and nonmaterial culture such as ideas, religion, political beliefs, family patterns and language, etc.

Technology is one component of culture. Some cultures have what we call superior technology, but all cultures have technology.

Cultures also have symbols. Like the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, for example.

Language is definitely a part of culture. If you’ve traveled much this was very obvious to you. Not everyone speaks English.

Lastly, culture is composed of norms, mores, and folkways such as what is good and bad, right and wrong, etc,

I think that any plot an author can devise is influenced by the attributes of their culture. Cultures do change so it’s quite easy to see how historical fiction can be created. Most of my work is contemporary, but of course you can still find the historical influence of culture in my work. I wrote a book titled The Enchanted (one of my CR titles that’s out of print.) The descriptions of castles, rulers, war, and belief in the supernatural figured heavily in the book. My first book A New Dream dealt with an ex-convict who wanted to go straight. Deviant behavior is a part of culture too. When I wrote Blue 52 political culture was all through the book. My current WIP, which is almost done, is about a guy who fought in Afghanistan.

I just don’t think you can get away from it. Authors do use both history and current events in their writing. Can you think of a book that doesn’t have either history or current events in it? Let me know!

“GET IT OFF ME!” I swipe the snake to the floor, step as far away as possible, and continue to flail my hands and shiver.

Ghost-ma floats down to the motionless reptile and shakes her head. “Just an old rubber snake from the toy basket in the children’s section, Mitzy.” She reaches an ethereal hand toward Pyewacket and raises one finger. “You shouldn’t torment your best human, Mr. Cuddlekins.”

With the welcome knowledge that a live snake is not slithering around my closet, I return to the bench. “Yeah, what she said, Pye. I can’t put up with feline shenanigans and keep ghosts out of my head before a proper cup of coffee!”

Grams chuckles as she continues to rifle through the closet. “Don’t blame me, dear. I honestly thought you said it out loud because I wasn’t watching your lips. I was hard at work finding the perfect outfit for your first rodeo parade.”

“It will be the rodeo parade I missed, if you don’t pick something soon! Erick just sent me another text. The marching band is warming up. Yeesh! Pick something! Anything!”

“Reeeee-ow.” A warning.

“Look, you’ve even got Pyewacket concerned. He’d hate for me to stand up Detective Harper. You know Pye’s all Team Erick, now.”

Ghost-ma and I share a giggle, and I stretch out my arm to scratch the broad tan head of my furry overlord. Along with this bookstore, a swanky apartment, and a healthy monetary inheritance, my grandmother passed on her most precious possession: Robin Pyewacket Goodfellow.

Pye is a half-wild caracal …
