My Gangster Father and Me!

MY GANGSTER FATHER AND ME!

BLURB:

Happy Fathers Day.
Our history and experiences can define us, inspire our actions and as writers impact our words and stories.  Mine most definitely has. My father was a gangster. Really!

This is my story about my relationship with my father and how his profession affected me and my life, “He called me Sugar Plum. Both a blessing and a burden, I learned interesting lessons from my father: about generosity and determination, taking risks, and certainly finding the willingness to live life as an adventure.”

EXCERPT

There were mixed messages and expectations for my generation. My friends, mostly high school sorority sisters, fell in line. They married, had fancy weddings, and wore beautiful white wedding dresses. For me, they were the symbol of years of living an unwanted life. It was expected of them. They had dreamed of being a bride and about their wedding since playing dolls and dress-up as little girls. They lost themselves and who they could be, shoving aside what they were capable of being, to do what was expected.

One brilliant girl I knew wanted to be a doctor. Instead, she became an accountant. What a waste. Another wanted to be an actress, another a dancer, another a social worker. They found it best to leave those dreams tucked away so they would be approved of by their families. The sadness of not fulfilling their dreams caused them to feel an emptiness much of their lives.   I had many women tell me this when I toured the country with my first book, “The Woman’s Business Therapist.” One woman had told me her whole life she felt as if she could never fill the emptiness. Now a senior, she realizes why. She had abandoned her education for marriage. Why couldn’t she have had both? Men do.

Throughout my life I felt as if I was being strangled by such demands. I did my best to untangle their grasp. The mixed messages for women amounted to being a good wife and mother. The man is the head of the household and breadwinner, meaning his needs and wants are more important than yours.

Oh, oh. My mistake? I began making more money than my now ex- husband.

I was to have his dinner on the table when he came home from work. I often begrudgingly did.

Oh, oh. I hate to cook.

Never refuse to have sex with him. (Honestly, my father’s mother told me this when I first got married.)

Oh. Oh. I failed again.

Really, I tried to do what was expected. All my friends were already married, what was I to do?

First, I married a hippie and had a baby. Oh, oh, the two-year marriage ended in divorce.

So, why not try again. Another marriage, another child. This time the disaster lasted twenty-one years. He was a cheat and a womanizer. No more oh, oh. Only good riddance!

A couple years later in therapy, I commented, “He was lucky I didn’t kill him.”

The voice of reason calmly asked, “What good would that have done?”

I not so calmly shouted, “I could have hung his head on the wall, same as when someone shoots a deer and hangs it on their wall.”

“You might need more therapy,” the therapist replied.

Me: “No, I feel great about the idea!”

My parents had wanted me to marry a nice Jewish boy and live in a beautiful house in a beautiful neighborhood. At least my mother surely did. I hadn’t met her expectations. Neither did my father.

How is it possible to meet our parents’ expectations when our ambitions and interests are far different than theirs? My mother’s own disappointments created her dreams for what I might become, how I might live my adult life. I never felt my father had those same expectations. He was, however, disappointed with the two men I married. We both were.

The thing is, we women had mixed messages and expectations in our heads, voices shouting at us, holding us back from stepping outside the box women were told they fit into. I often refused to listen to those voices. I didn’t make my life easy.

I wanted to live a life beyond the ordinary. Have I paid a price for my wanting to live differently than what was expected of a woman of my generation? Probably so. Mostly, it’s been worth it to me. It would have been lovely to be married to the right man for me—one who would have been as supportive and proud of me as I would have been of him.

Constantly pushing myself to succeed. I found myself in situations where I was financially responsible for my sons, their education, and my own needs. But I did it. My dad’s voice was in my head. “Never be a quitter.”

I’ve hardly ever told anyone about the time I was asked to run for Congress in NYC—a “no” I have regretted.

Wow, my dad would have been thrilled.

Jose Tugaff Amoloria, a self-taught Filipino-Australian artist and watchmaker is very unlikely to admit he is an artist. He is even surprised how he was able to create one of the most expensive, kinetic and iconic maps of Australia in the world as well as his other artworks. The unique map is also a showcase of Jose’s collection of remarkable timepieces. An antique 18-carat gold watch, a 14-carat gold watch, white gold watches, other rare collectible timepieces, gold nuggets, Australian opal, and a certified one-carat diamond are embedded in his art pieces.

All the art pieces featured in this book are one of a kind, handmade and had no prior prototypes as they were done progressively as the designs were revealed in his imagination. Jose didn’t have sophisticated tools and instruments to complete his artworks and he is so grateful the result was far beyond his imagination.

About the Authors:
Jose Tugaff Amoloria is a man of multi-talents and skills. He is a professional watchmaker who had mastered most phases of watches: mechanical, automatic, quartz technology and modern watches. He created one-of-a-kind kinetic masterpieces made of collectible time pieces and watch parts, enhanced with microlights. He became a chef, and was personally taught a French masterchef's family secret of French liquored ice cream.

Jose mastered stone masonry in record time. His experience in watch repair helped him to gain a feather touch to accomplish his masonry works. He is also an avid martial art practitioner of arnis, a Filipino martial art, and he is also a second-dan black belt in Karate, with a champion's trophy to prove it. With so many other skills and abilities, Jose thanks God for the gifts and talents given to him.

An Oldie But a Goodie

Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch by Alice Hegan Rice was originally published in the early years of the 20th century in 1902. There was even a movie based on the book. My sister found the book much, much later in a dime store if you remember what that was. She read the Whitman edition published in 1962. The cover I’ve used is the original 1962 version. She and I were both big readers so when she finished it I read it. It was fantastic.

Mrs. Wiggs had come to the city looking for work when her husband died leaving her with five Children to raise. Work was hard to come by. They lived in small house that faced a railroad. Food was fairly scarce so the older son, Jim, found what work he could to help the family. The story begins at Christmas time when we find out Jim had to sell his overcoat to cover the rent. He has what sounds like pneumonia. From that point everything just gets worse for the family. Jim’s death is the catalyst that changes life for the Wiggs family. The family comes to the attention of a rich lady who takes them under her wing and alerts others to their plight. Things do get better for them, but Mrs. Wiggs never can forget Jim. The boy’s death scene was as touching a one as I’ve ever read.

As I said, things were much better after the rich woman helped them. She became a very important person in the Cabbage Patch who was ofter called on for advice. Inadvertently the family assisted her in her romance.

I won’t tell you anything more, but I truly thought it a very nice find. The book is billed as children’s literature, but I don’t think young children could understand it very well. Everything would be fine from say fourth grade up to adult level. The book is filled with optimism, and Mrs. Wiggs was a great role model. She loved her children and did her very best to help them prosper.

You can get the kindle edition for free at Amazon.

Did you ever read the book? You could read it in one sitting if you wanted to. It’s free so why not?

I should be on Island Time right now.
They say no man is an island.
Well, let me tell you something. I was born for island living.
I like to drink, smoke my cigars, and sleep under my favorite hat.
That’s my idea of a good time.
Island living isn’t for everyone, especially the guys at OPS.
You would think as former military that I would fit right in.
But unlike them, I don’t take great pleasure in rescuing the girl, taking out baddies, or saving the world.
That’s not what Island Time is about.
All I need is a woman in my bed and a drink in my hand.
I just didn’t realize what I was getting myself into when I brought this particular woman home.
Fista…Whista? Nah, that’s not right. I’ll remember her name one of these days.
Names aren’t really important.
But her scent…I would go to church if it meant knowing what that amazing smell was.
Granted, I’d probably turn to ash the moment I stepped through the doors, but it was a risk I was willing to take.
For her.
Just as long as I still get my Island Time.
A man doesn’t change overnight, and there’s no way I’m up island living for a woman. Not even if she said she doesn’t want me anymore.
How much longer can I hold out?
It’s been five days …And A Wake-Up.

I'm a stay at home mom that loves to read. Some of my favorite titles are Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Horatio Hornblower. I started writing when I was trying to come up with suggestions on ways I could help bring in some extra money. I came up with the idea that I could donate plasma because you could earn an extra $500/month. My husband responded with, "No. Find something else. Write a blog. Write a book." I didn't think I had anything to share on blog that a thousand other mothers hadn't already thought of. I decided to take his challenge seriously and sat down to write my first book, Jack. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed writing. From there, the stories continued to flow and I haven't been able to stop. I hope my readers enjoy my books as much as I enjoy writing them. Between reading, writing, and taking care of three small kids, my days are quite full.

excerpt:

“Please don’t worry, Ava. Your baby is safe with me. I’m going to take care of her like she’s my own…”

Ever since my daughter
Isa was born, I’ve been struggling. I can’t remember anything, and my brain is in a fog. So when my husband Ned suggests we hire a night nanny, I leap at the chance.

When she walks into our home, I smile at her, relieved she’s finally arrived. But then I notice her eyes: the color of amethysts. A memory flashes across my brain, but before I can grasp it, it’s gone…

Then I see Ned whispering with her as she touches his arm. A chill runs down my spine. But I try to brush it off, sure that my mind is playing tricks on me. I know I desperately need this woman’s help.

But then I find my baby girl face down on her stomach and struggling to breathe. I scream as I hug her close and Isa cries in shock. For one moment relief floods my body: she’s okay. The next moment I’m frozen to my core as I turn to find Ned behind me…

I look into my husband’s deep brown eyes, and realize one
thing: he thinks it was me.

Welcome to Woodvalley Pines…where hunky firefighters save the day! It’s time to turn up the heat and hope this smokin’ hot fireman can control the blaze.

Libby hadn’t even been in Woodvalley Pines a day and she was already freaking out. Her kitchen had just set on fire. From toast of all things! That’s right, she was the victim of the elusive toaster fire. Yes, a toaster. Who knew they could just spontaneously burst into flames? She certainly didn’t. If that wasn’t enough to ruin her day, a swarm of hot firefighters seeing her in her pink pajamas would do it.

Zach tried his hardest not to laugh as the woman in the Disney pajamas accused him of keeping toaster fire safety a secret. He didn’t know where in the world this angry green-eyed princess had come from, but he had to admit that he was intrigued. After all, if she had this much passion when it came to talking toasters, what other kind of flames could he stoke in her?

Libby and Zach’s spark was instant, but will the fire burn out or can they keep the flames blazing?

“Looking beautiful tonight, princess.”

He watched as her nose crinkled while she scanned her own outfit.

“My sweatpants are beautiful?” she challenged.

“No … but the woman in them is.”

“This isn’t a date,” she reminded him, her smile quickly disappearing.

“Is that why you wore sweatpants?”

“Maybe.”

It was his turn to smile. So transparent. “Well, not sure your cunning plan worked, princess … ‘cause you still look hot as f**k in those pants.” He let his gaze trail down her body. “Actually, I’m pretty sure the way they cling to those curves of yours is gonna make me blush. I’m not sure how appropriate that would be – considering this isn’t a date.”

His plan worked. She was blushing again. Now all he had to do was control himself. And put his tongue back in his mouth. The black yoga pants she had on were the biggest test. Paired with a white vest and a black lace bra on full display –he was in for a tough night.

“Those lines normally work for you?” Pink cheeks diluted some of her sass.

“You always take compliments so well?” He could do this all night.

A cute little growl slipped past those pouted lips. “You’re lucky I’m hungry.” The door opened wider as she gestured him inside. “So, what did you bring?”

“You like steak?” Zach turned briefly to make sure she was following him as he made a beeline for the kitchen.

“Is the sky blue? Of course I like steak. You’re making us steak?”

“Is the sun hot?” he teased.

“You’re hilarious.”

“I try.” He broke into another smile as he settled the groceries onto her countertop.
