Weekend Writing Warriors: Fathers and Sons

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors. My excerpt for today is from my new release The Enchanted. So far we've seen that the King wants Prince Alan-my hero-to marry a woman of his choosing, but Prince Alan doesn't want to. The king is angry, but at least he is still talking to Alan.
The Enchanted is available at most online retail outlets and at http://www.astraeapress.com. When you finish here, you can find more lovely sentences from participating authors here.  The king speaks first.

"I have never understood you. You insisted on marrying a commoner — a nobody — and now that death has released you from your vows, you refuse to marry a woman of your own station."

Alan's heart thudded in his chest. How far could he push his father? With Bowdyn, one could never be sure. "I am sorry to disappoint you."

"The kingdom needs heirs. The wedding will proceed as I have planned."

  6. Oh dear, you gotta feel for Alan, he's so stuck between a rock and a hard place. Curious as to whether these two come to understand each other, or if there's a serious falling-out.

  10. Your story tugs on our hearts because most of us have had parent-child conflicts that last into our adult lives.

You have a great way of interweaving dialogue and conflict that goes right to the heart!

  11. Gotta love the King's total lack of sentiment. "Why don't you want to get married, son? The other lady's dead, isn't she? Look, you drop a sandwich, you make another one! Get your head in the game!"

  14. Marrying for love the first time doesn't mean you don't care about marrying for love the second time--quite the opposite!

    Poor guy . . .
