Saturday Sample: Flood

Hello!  I'm so glad you stopped by. My Saturday Sample today is from my latest WIP Flood.  In this excerpt my heroine is pondering her attraction to my hero.  I'd truly like to know what you think of it. The dinner is one of the pivotal scenes in the book, and I want to get the setup right.

“Just checking,” Lila said. “I wondered if maybe Caleb had stayed with you.”

No, but Caleb was the problem. She’d tossed and turned all night trying to figure out what to do about him. Based on his behavior since she hired him, it was hard to believe he was anything but what he seemed on the surface, a nice guy who’d done a silly thing trying to earn the love of his father.

On the other hand, what was that old saying her grandmother used to be so fond of…Yeah, where’s there’s smoke, there’s fire. If that were true, Caleb might be exactly what Jason said he was: a con man who was interested in her because of her family’s money.

Ignoring Lila, she called, “Let’s go out, Peaches.”

Peaches whined and slunk to the floor. She didn’t like getting wet, but the vet techs didn’t like cleaning up dog waste either. The dog did her business in record time and made a beeline for her warm bed in Aria’s office. Spoiled creature.

The phone rang, and Aria answered since she was closest to it. “St. Francis Animal Clinic. How may I help you?”

Caleb’s voice, throaty and seductive almost burned her ear. “I can think of several ways, but none of them have anything to do with medicine.”

Aria’s heart picked up speed as her spirits soared, and her worry melted away. “Oh? Do tell.”

“I’ll tell you later. My list is pretty long. Can you come to dinner at my house? I’ll cook spaghetti. I have a great recipe.”
