I've been sharing posts from Return Engagement. To recap, my hero an FBI agent and my heroine an actress accidentally meet on a beach 10 years after his father broke them up. It's obvious that there is still something between them in spite of her engagement to prominent attorney Alex Crawford. They agree to have a hot dog together. In last week's post, my hero has put his arm around her and told her he'd like to kiss her. She liked the idea.

Shame abruptly flooded her. For some reason her thinking seemed muddled and messy tonight. I have a wonderful life. I have everything I ever wanted: wealth, fame, a great job, and they don’t make men any better than Alex Crawford. How can I risk my happiness by cheating on him, especially with a man like Richard? There’ s no possible hope of a future with him.

From under lowered lashes she caught sight of the amusement park in the distance. “Look, Richard, I see the merry-go-round; let’s hurry.” She broke away from him and sprinted down the beach with Richard right behind her.
After they rode the merry-go-round a couple of times, Elizabeth gave up her attempt to keep things impersonal.

  1. What a way to leave us hanging ... I assume she kissed him after all. Lovely snippet.

  3. At least she tried... at least briefly.

  4. Yes, attraction can be very much like an amusement park ride, lol. Great snippet.

  5. At that moment of lucidity, she should have ran away. Now, it's going to be too late!

  6. Oh no! I don't think going on the merry - go -round , where they're in close quarters is going to help her avoid temptation.

  7. A brief moment of practicality---But it sounds like it's going to be VERY brief! :)

    Great scene, Elaine.

  8. Gave up the attempt -- those three words say it all. Wonderfully telling snippet of the heartache to come!

  9. Round and round she goes and where she lands, nobody knows. Good story, Elaine. We hope our daughters have more sense.

  11. If she's giving up her attempt to be impersonal so soon, this situation is about to become a lot more complicated!

  12. Richard has been quite patient if he rode the merry-go-round a few times! Can't wait to find out what happens when she stops being impersonal.

  14. I'm glad she's fighting her desires. At this point, it's the right thing to do, although I have no doubt that in the end she'll join the FBI man.

  15. She seems conflicted... because if she really wanted to turn him down, she'd leave him alone, instead of spending more time with him!

  16. Woot! I knew we needed a "drag him for a ride" moment. If she hated her fiance so much there wouldn't be enough conflict, but now... yes, I can feel her conflict. It's gotten R.E.A.L.

  17. The merry-go-round is a terrific image considering what's going on here. Very nice work.
