I've been sharing excerpts from Return Engagement. To recap, my hero and heroine met on a beach ten years after his father broke them up. They ate hot dogs at a beachfront cafe, and now they've gone to a carnival where she asks him to win a prize for her at a shooting gallery. Don't forget that he's an FBI agent from a powerful senator's family, and she's an A-list Hollywood actress who's engaged to another man.

Richard groaned. “Those guns are probably all sighted wrong so you can’t win. Couldn’t I just buy you one instead?”

“No, that won’t do at all. Never mind. It’s okay if you don’t think you can do it,” she replied with no hint of a smile whatsoever. Would he try to win a prize for her or not?

“Okay, I know a challenge when I hear it.” Richard stepped up to the counter and inspected the row of guns provided by the arcade. “I’ll win you an animal if I have to stay here all night.”

  1. I can't decide whether I want him to succeed or fail. Either way, the complications could be interesting.

  2. I now want to try a shooting range at a fair. I'm a lousy shot -- maybe if the guns are sighted wrong it will counteract my bad aim and I can win something. LOL But add me to the list of those who aren't sure if I want him to win a stuffed animal for her or not. Explaining its existence might prove... interesting.

  6. This snippet made me smile. There's some manipulating going on, but he sees it for what it is. Nicely done, Elaine!

  7. Nothing like a little chafing the ego to get a man into action. Great snippet, Elaine. :)

  8. Come on get that gun shooting, win her a goldfish! I know she wants a soft toy but what the hey! Love the exchange between these two, very likeable, characters.

  9. True to life dialogue going on here, Elaine. Can't wait to see what happens next.

  10. I'm intrigued by the way she seems to be daring him to ruin her future with her fiance. It's very clear she wants Richard, or at the very least doesn't want to be in her regular life... I sense some really hurt feeling in the future. Maybe he shouldn't hit anything.

  11. Is she testing him to see how much he truly likes her? He'll stay all night to win her a stuff animal might prove it, or it might become annoying if he doesn't win and they truly do stay there all night. lol Hopefully, it won't come to that.

  12. If you're a good enough shot, I'm guessing you can adjust for the sight... eventually.

  14. I'm with a lot of the rest of them, I can't decide if I want him to succeed or fail in getting her a stuffed animal. I sense flirting going on between them now though, there's definitely a connection between them.

  17. Ha! I almost got into a fistfight at a street carnival once because I told the guy running the shooting game that his sights were off to the right. Nice, cleanly-written snippet.
