Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors

Welcome to Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors, your chance to sample the work of a talented group of writers. I've been sharing excerpts from my new release The Captain and the Cheerleader. Last week we found that Susan, a teacher at Fairfield High, was irritated with her fellow teacher Robin. Robin bet Susan $50 that she couldn't make the football coach Kurt Deveraux ask her out. We're picking up where we left off last week. You can find more snippets at:

Blurb:

Susan English can’t stand Robin Lanford! She’s so full of herself she irritates everyone on the faculty of Fairfield High. When Robin bets Susan fifty dollars that she can’t get a date with Kurt Deveraux, the head football coach, Susan jumps at the chance to put the little heifer in her place. She had no idea that teaching Robin a lesson would irrevocably change her life, strain treasured friendships, and throw two families into chaos.

Excerpt:

Don recorded the last bet on a sheet of copier paper. “It’s about fifty-fifty. Sorry, Robin, but my money’s on Susan. When she enters a room, men sit up and take notice.”

Melissa, who stood near the door, wildly waved her hand to get their attention. “Here comes Kurt now.”
Kurt looked surprised to find so many teachers in the lounge. He probably was; on Friday the school usually emptied in a hurry.

“What’s up?” Kurt inquired of the room at large as he rounded the corner and turned toward his mailbox. “Why are you all so quiet?”

  1. Hi Elaine, you have another beauty of a story happening here. I picture the scene clearly as if I'm right there in the room. So what happens next?

  2. Don't you just hate it when that happens? I bet no one confesses to what is really afoot!

  4. Still feeling sorry for ole Kurt here. Very well written, I feel like I'm in the room with these people. Great snippet.

  5. They can't really tell him without ruining the bet. The poor man will think everyone was talking about him--and he'll be right!

  6. This is such a vivid moment! It makes me wonder if Susan is ballsy enough to just tell him, right there in front of everybody, what's going on and ask if he'll go out with her anyway.

Of course, that would probably make for a much less interesting story. Maybe. It'll be fun to see what happens if he finds out about the bet much later.

Interesting snippet! Looking forward to reading more!

  7. Oh boy, he is going to feel really used when it does come out. I wonder if he has another reason for not noticing the other woman, like maybe he's getting over heartbreak and is simply not ready?
