We saw that after the wrestling match started, Cade hit Rocky with a chair, and Rocky didn't get up. We also saw that in the ambulance he asked if it was safe to sit up, and at that point Aimee slapped him. The driver told Aimee there was no call to hit him because it wasn't his fault. Aimee doesn't think Dave (the driver) and Rocky understand the seriousness of their position. (They ticked off drug dealers and have to fake Rocky's death so he can enter the witness protection program.) At the hospital Aimee is told that Rocky is dead which of course he isn't. I'm skipping a few paragraphs and moving to Rocky's fake funeral where Aimee confronts two important characters, Cade McCoy and Gabe Porter. We met Cade who supposedly killed Rocky in the first scene, and at the funeral he spoke to Aimee and told her he'll never go back in the ring again. Today, we'll continue with Aimee's meeting with Gabe Porter. Last week Aimee remembered that one of the reasons Rocky had to fake his death was for her safety so the drug dealers wouldn't hurt her to get back at Rocky.

Excerpt:

As Gabe finally released her hand, she saw him staring at her engagement ring, an antique Rocky had won in a poker game. It was so unusual, translated ugly, that it attracted a lot of attention. The big center stone as well as the smaller, surrounding stones were rose-cut diamonds that didn’t sparkle the way more modern cuts did. It wasn’t the prettiest ring she’d ever seen, but the elaborately carved shank was okay.

“You’re a kind woman, Aimee. I hope everyone will be as understanding as you are.” Gabe smoothed his hair back as if it had been rumpled, which it hadn’t. Did he oil it to make it look so shiny and wet? “What about you?” he asked. “What will you do now?”

Blurb:
Aimee Sherwood never dreamed that following her fiancĂ© into the witness protection pro-gram would land her in a haunted house in a town that’s downright creepy. She’d have laughed if she had been told the guy who lives down the road might be her soul mate, not the man whose ring she’s wearing. Life in West Virginia is nothing like life in Los Angeles, but between bean ball battles with Marilyn Monroe, remodeling a crumbling farmhouse, and starting a new online business, life in the country is anything but boring.

  4. He doesn't sound so bad in this snippet. But, does he have an interest in her ring?

  5. It must be very hard for her to keep up the pretence that her husband is dead. I too would like to know what comes next.

  6. Hope she has an answer ready. Interesting ring- I wonder if it has any significance?

  7. That's quite the complicated situation, and yet my attention, like is, is drawn to this ring.

  8. That ring must be important because of the way you describe it. That makes me wonder. Yes, I curious about what's next, too.

  9. It's a sad state when the best part of a ring is 'okay.' Maybe she can use this 'death' as an excuse to get rid of it.

  11. I'm interested in hearing her answer to the question. (And intrigued by the ring and its history.)

  13. Hope she can think quick on her feet for that answer! I get the feeling that ring may end up meaning something to Gabe in the long run of things, or that it may cause trouble. Quite curious.
