Saturday Sample and Weekend Writing Warriors

Welcome to Saturday Sample and Weekend Writing Warriors. Today I'm sharing an excerpt from my current work in progress. The book is titled Tarnished Silver, and I have no official blurb to share. The set up is like this.

My heroine Brittany Granger is a private investigator who has been summoned to the home of the Silver family. The Silvers operate The Silver Firm, a prestigious law practice. They are famous, rich, and some say unscrupulous. She has no idea why they want to see her.

Last Week: This is a WIP so if something grabs you that I need to change please say so.

Silver briefly smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes.  “Yes, he does, but he isn’t quite as tall.  He isn’t a lawyer either.  He’s a minister.”

Had she heard a note of condemnation in Silver’s voice?  “That’s certainly nothing to be ashamed of.”

He nodded.  “That’s right.  My grandson ministers to a small, Japanese congregation located in Fairfield. Unfortunately, one of the members recently contacted me with a concern.”

“And that concern is?”

“Money, Miss Granger.  Several members of his church are concerned that some of the weekly offering is going into Bradley’s pocket.”

Excerpt:

Brittany leaned forward.  “Do they have any proof?”

He shook his head.  “Not yet.  That’s where you come in.  I want you to attend the church and see what you can find out.  Since you’re part Japanese and live in Fairfield, Bradley won’t think it’s strange if you show up on Sunday.  Find out if there’s any truth in this accusation.  Bradley is estranged from his family, but he’s still my grandson. I’ll allow no one to slander his good name if he’s innocent.”

  1. Oooh, liking this. Though grandpa was going to be an SOB but he has concerns for his grandson as well as his own name. That give credence to his worry.

  2. I guess now we understand a bit more of this thinking in hiring her...an interesting situation developing. Great snippet!

  3. I thought the "if he's innocent" at the end was a great touch! What will he do if she finds out he's not innocent?

  4. I'm glad that the last line shows his agenda in finding the truth. Great snippet, Veronica!

  5. I like where this is going. Grandpa is a little imperious but it sounds like he cares about grandson.

  6. So now we see why he picked her for the investigation. I just wonder if she'll balk at it. But the grandfather is being very fair in not assuming his grandson is either guilty or innocent. You've got a very interesting conflict going here.

  7. The grandfather isn't quite behaving the way you'd expect a rich sleaze ball to act. His son may not be acting the way you'd expect a minister to act. These deviations from stereotypes add a delicious tang to your story.

  8. Hmm, I wonder how he'll react if his grandson *isn't* innocent.
