EXCERPT:

Day 5: The Bachelor Father ~ 1959

“Well?” Haley asked anxiously when Chloe reached the bench where she waited.

“I got the referral,” Chloe said, “but I’m not sure you’ll want it.”

“Is it for some snobbish, upper crust family from Beacon Hill?” In her mind’s eye, Haley could picture an ornate mansion, resplendent with butlers, maids, and chauffer.

“No, actually they live in Somerville. And it’s for a widower, Eric Garrison to be exact.”

“Who is Eric Garrison?” Haley asked.

The look Chloe gave her was absolutely comical, as if she couldn’t imagine Haley not recognizing the name.

“He’s a famous criminal attorney, supposedly for members of the Irish mob.” Chloe paused for what Haley expected was effect. “His daughter Winnie is in my class.” Leaning closer so only Haley could hear, Chloe added, “He’s gone through four nannies in the past two years since his wife died. Nobody knows what happened to the last one. She just disappeared.”

“That’s silly. She couldn’t have disappeared, or it would have been all over the newspapers.”

“Garrison probably had it covered up. The rich and connected can do that you know.”

Haley pushed the thought aside; certain Chloe was being her usual melodramatic self. “What’s the little girl like?”

“Winnie’s very well behaved and artistic. She loves to draw and sculpt clay figurines. And, even at six, she shows amazing talent.”

“Have you ever met the father?” Haley wondered.

“No, the last time we had parent meetings, he was out of town. The nanny came for the interview.”

“The nanny that disappeared?”

“No. It was her predecessor. Like I said, it doesn’t seem as if anyone stays very long. That’s why I’m leery of you applying. He must be horrible to work for or, possibly, dangerous.”

Haley snagged the piece of paper from Chloe’s hand. “I’m sure it’s not anything quite so nefarious. I’m going to call for an interview appointment.”

“I’ll worry,” Chloe insisted.

“I’m not going to take the job if I feel the least bit uncomfortable, I promise.”
