However, in his dreams he still hears the voice of the angel, like a salve for his bitter, broken heart. One day as he is walking past the town's saloon on his way to the bank, the sounds of music within drifts outside, and a woman begins to sing. Shocked, Damien recognizes her voice – his angel.

Violet Lovelace is struggling to make ends meet following the carriage accident that claimed the life of her father and left her mother in a wheelchair. Teaching voice lessons to children isn’t enough to pay for the pain medication her mother so desperately needs. When Violet is offered a job singing at the local saloon, she accepts despite her misgivings. But what other choice does she have?

EXCERPT

 

Where was he? He couldn’t see anything. He tried, but his eyes wouldn’t open. He searched for signs of physical sensation but couldn’t find any. He was tired, drifting… 

 

There was a child with dark hair and rosy cheeks, and it was summertime. He was that child. The sun glimmered overhead in an expanse of clear blue sky. Heat waves radiated over him like layers of an invisible blanket, making the top of his head feel hot and his skin sticky. He and his playmates were laughing, playing a game of leapfrog in the tall green grass. The lush earthy scent filled his nose. A leafy maple tree nearby offered a bit of shade. Its network of branches that zig-zagged at every angle would be easy to climb. He reached and took hold of one of the lower ones, lifting himself up easily. He walked his feet up the trunk and before he knew it, he was straddling the branch as though it were a horse. This was fun. Another branch arched overhead. It was within his reach. He kept going, scaling the tree, nimbly coordinating his hands and feet. Soon he’d almost reached the top. He looked at his friends below, amazed at how high he was. Why not climb all the way?  He was so close. Grabbing one of the maple’s smaller upper limbs, he steadied himself for a moment and then hoisted himself up. At once, the branch snapped in his hands with a crack, sending him off balance. His foot slipped. In shock he felt himself tumbling down, down, down…
