A Word With the Author
1.Did you always want to be an author?
From the 5th grade when I constructed my first book with my teacher Mr. Manuel at Avondale Middle School where I drew a cow’s backside for “The End” I have wanted to write. I didn’t know at the time what an author was, that came later. I knew I loved writing and seeing people’s faces once they read what I wrote. My favorite class has always been English and my 9th grade teacher changed my life. Mr. White or Towers High School told me that was what I should do.
2.Tell us about the publication of your first book.
The Witches Prophecy is the first published book. It was nerve wrecking getting everything to my standards and I am still not convinced its perfect enough. I think every author goes through it. I am an indie author by choice. I wanted to have my own say in what my book looked like, sounded like and when it came out. It came out on September 28th as an eBook. I just recently release the paperback version on Amazon, B&N and other vendors including to libraries.
3.Besides yourself, who is your favorite author in the genre you write in?
Hmm. That is a hard one. There are so many great authors out there that write fantasy and my book spans several genres. I would have to say Yasmine Galenorn. My first book of hers was Witchling. The Otherworld Series is great, I have most of them up to Bone Witch. I like collecting books and had such a great time reading the first one that I just kept buying them. She has a great style. She infuses fantasy with sensuality with a hint of humor. When I write I just write but it was brought to my attention that I have a certain sarcasm with my books. I love offering an escape from life in my books and Yasmine does that for me.
4.What's the best part of being an author? The worst?
The best part about being a fantasy author is you can create a world from scratch, or you can have a jumping off point. With Trouble I used a jumping off point, but I have started another series that I am hoping to publish early next year where I started from scratch because it takes place 200 years in the future. Writing is a lot like playing the game “The Sims” where you decide what happens and why. Being an indie author, I get to decide everything from the ground up. The worst part about being a fantasy author is your world building can get out of control. I was coming up with foods, animals, people, aliens, etc. I had to reel myself back in and write the book lol. But it was fun. As far as the worst part of being indie is you have to be very disciplined, or you’ll never get anything done. One of my best writer friends writes dark fantasy too and I have to motivate her to finish her work for her readers. I don’t mind though. I like to mother my friends.
5.What are you working on now?
I know I am supposed to be secretive and all but I have never been that type of person. I have finished penning Book Two in The Blue Flamed Witch Series and its out with betas. I am also gearing up to write Book One in the newest series I am about to put out next year. I love hearing feedback and seeing things from others POV. I didn’t used to. I used to be too proud, but I’ve been humbled by the great people I’ve met that love my characters as much as I do. That’s really what its about. Getting people to love the work I have created as much as me.

ReplyDeleteWhat are the essential characteristics of a hero you can root for?
ReplyDeleteRelatability is a big factor. It goes beyond mere physicalities. Strength of character and morals are even more factors for me.A grey character or "bad" character can be turned around just by what their morals are. I think even bad characters can be redeemed if they have good morals.
