Saturday Sample: Fortuna

Welcome to Saturday Sample. Last week we learned that Rocky had bought some property in West Virginia. Aimee agrees to come to West Virginia even though the witness protection people told her not to have contact with him for months. Aimee's car broke down, and to her surprise Cade McCoy comes down the road riding a big horse. He by chance moved into the same neighborhood as Rocky and agrees to take her to Rocky's house. Cade speaks first.

“Sorry. I don’t have a phone with me, but it probably wouldn’t work if I did. We get practically no cell phone reception out here. How about I give you a lift to Rocky’s place instead?”

“How do you know where he lives?”

Cade grinned at her in a way that made her feel she’d missed something obvious. “We aren’t in LA anymore. There’s only one property on this end of Taylor Road, the old Duncan place. It’s been vacant for years. June tried to sell it to me, but I didn’t bite. Guess Rocky did.”

Aimee frowned. “Who’s June?”

“Oh, she’s the only real estate agent in town,” Cade answered as he stroked his horse’s neck. You really are in the sticks now.

Aimee’s lips tightened. If the house had been on the market for a long time, that June person might have sold Rocky a money pit. There had to be some reason why nobody wanted to buy it. Honestly, sometimes the man was as naïve as a child.

Blurb:
Aimee Sherwood never dreamed that following her fiancé into the witness protection pro-gram would land her in a haunted house in a town that’s downright creepy. She’d have laughed if she had been told the guy who lives down the road might be her soul mate, not the man whose ring she’s wearing. Life in West Virginia is nothing like life in Los Angeles, but between bean ball battles with Marilyn Monroe, remodeling a crumbling farmhouse, and starting a new online business, life in the country is anything but boring.
