Elizabeth Chalker is still in the furnace of life’s' calamities and fighting the good fight of faith and endurance, keeping her eyes on the prize of heaven. Before serious, physical illness devastated her body, Elizabeth was on the fast track as a successful psychologist and addictions specialist, working with violent juvenile offenders and their families, near completion of her third graduate degree. Her life is a testimony of faith that is steadfast and remains no matter the seemingly dark, unjust, and treacherous circumstances of life. She resides in Lighthouse Point, Florida. Elizabeth continues to minister to those in need and aspires to show God's glory through every breath she takes. This is a real life story of being in the fire, where I currently remain, where my heart for the Lord has become increasingly insatiable. A deepened intimacy has developed and continues to grow even through this very moment, and will continue beyond. As you read, this is my hope and prayer for you as well.
book cover
I have one book currently, “Hanging On by the Scratch Marks My Nails Left Behind: Raw Faith”. This is a book that was written while still in the midst of trials with no promise for the suffering to end. It took 10 years to write while suffering serious, physical illness. My prayer for the book is to inspire individuals to self-examine and find their core; to realize that we are all children of God and therefore, one in Him. We tend to see life and our circumstances as if from under a quilt as it is being made, where all that is seen is a bunch of haphazard threads from our view. God’s view is from above where everything comes together and forms a beautiful and complete picture. My hope is also to encourage individuals to seek love and extend love. One of the most important messages of the book is to strengthen anyone who reads it, to cause him or her to embrace all of who he or she is, the parts we deem ‘dark’ and unacceptable as well as the parts we see as praiseworthy and pleasant. Most importantly, my hope is that the reader will embrace intimacy in relationship with God and realize that raw expression of heart, no matter how unacceptable to the world, is honorable in the eyes of God and welcomed.

Welcome to Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors, your chance to sample the work of a talented group of authors. When you finish here, you can find more samples at:

Several of you have asked where to get the book, but it isn't available yet. I sent it to the publisher last week so I guess we wait and see.

If you've been following, you know that my hero and heroine have just had a bad breakup that devastated him. He's crushed by her rejection and suspicion. In the story, it's been raining for weeks, and finally the entire area is in the grip of a major flood. The National Guard has issued a mandatory evacuation for everyone living along the Wendell River, and Aria (heroine) lives along the river. She told everyone she was going to her house to get a few things, but that was hours ago, and no one has heard from her or her mother. The National Guard is too busy to look for them, and Aria's father can't get to the river because of the flood. Caleb (hero) has just been informed of the problem.

If Aria and her mother were trapped in the house, there was no place for them to go except up on the roof, and the way it was pouring outside it would be hard to cling to a slippery, steep roof. Even if they did manage to hang on, the water might still rise too high…  But what if they weren’t in the house? What if their car had been swept away by the flood water? No, this couldn’t happen! Forcing the dreadful picture from his mind, he sprang to his feet.  “I’m going out there anyway. If it’s humanly possible, I’ll get to her house. ”

Saturday Sample: The Welcome Inn

My excerpt today is from The Welcome Inn. This is the start of the book.

The hot, heavy darkness, as cloying as dusty velvet, pressed relentlessly upon the two struggling figures.

“Let me go you pig, you... you... pervert!”

Two well-placed kicks and a jab of the elbow later, Julianna Martin broke free.

“You swine,” she raged. “How dare you come to MY motel and attack me!” She shoved the man’s chest with all her strength, and he stumbled backwards and fell against the stairs leading into the pool.

Julianna waited for him to get up, but instead he gave a loud snort, mumbled something, and curled up into a ball on the side of the pool, presumably to sleep it off, since he reeked of alcohol.

She approached him cautiously, but when he still didn’t move, her temper flared, and she aimed a swift kick at the prostrate, drunken figure by the pool.

“Really, Miss Martin, that’s not very nice,” a voice protested from the shadows near the office door. “Do you make a habit of kicking a man when he’s down?”

Julianna whirled around to confront this new and unexpected danger. The man threw his hands into the air, palms out, and backed up a step. “Hey, I promise you’re safe with me. I was in my room reading when I heard the commotion, and I came out to see if you needed my help.”

“Do you know this... this... thing?”

“Oh, you mean Tim. He isn’t a thing, Miss Martin; he’s a man. He’s one of my best workers. Unfortunately, he had a little too much to drink tonight and tried to steal a kiss from a beautiful woman, but he’s harmless. He wouldn’t have hurt you.”

“That’s what you say. Are you his boss?”

“Yes, I’m...”

“I don’t care who you are. I’m calling Sheriff Mitchell to hold him until he sobers up.”

“Please, don’t do that. I’ll see to it that he doesn’t cause any more trouble, and he’ll apologize to you tomorrow.”

Julianna hesitated, but it was late and she was tired. “Oh, all right,” she crossly conceded. “Get him back to his room, and I’ll let it go this time.”

“Thank you. I appreciate it.”

“Until Mr. Abercrombie shows up and says differently, I’m the manager of the Welcome Inn, and I don’t allow drinking around the pool. It doesn’t matter if your construction crew works for Abercrombie or not, I still don’t allow drinking at the pool, and you’d better see to it that all of your men know it.”

“Yes, ma’am, I’ll be sure to tell them, but...”

“Good night,” Julianna interrupted, and she silently vanished into the manager’s apartment.

A smile played across the lips of her would-be rescuer, who shook his head before dragging his fallen comrade back to his room.

Anyone want to guess who she was talking to? Yep, her new boss Buck Abercrombie.

Caroline Ross, a Confederate widow, desperately seeks medical help for her little son in the Union Army camp.

John Oldham, a soldier disowned by his family for choosing the wrong side, comes to her aid. As they keep a vigil for days at Danny's bedside, a close relationship develops between them. John longs for a family and wants to make Caroline and Danny his own.

Will his wish come true in this season of miracles?

AT FIRST SNOWFALL by Cecilia Corona

When her half- brother shows up on her doorstep with his prophecy, the true nightmare begins. She must stand beside him in the battle of Galant or the evil Queen will destroy the kingdom.

Some faerytales are all too real, but if she can unleash her powers and learn to control them before the first snowfall, she just might find her happily ever after.

MR. CHRISTMAS ELF by Stephanie Burkhart

Jules' Christmas list is looking pretty pathetic. She needs a new muffler for her car and a hundred dollars to pay off her root canal. Her niece is asking for an iPad, but all Jules can afford is a Barbie doll. The peppermint on the top? Her boyfriend dumps her in a text message.

Jules could use a little Christmas magic, so when Elvis pops up claiming that he was sent by Santa to fill her Christmas list, all she has to do is believe – in the magic the season has to offer.

ALL THAT WE HAVE IS OUR SOUL by Katrina Gillian

The wait is finally over. Today is Theodore Lewis' 18th birthday and his essence has switched places with his soulmate for the day. His people have practiced this tradition for centuries. They are granted the chance to see the world through each other's eyes before actually meeting.

Only the Fates may have missed their mark. Theo's life is in 1940 and his soulmate is in 2014. This couldn't be happening. Is he doomed to never be with his soulmate, or will the Fates find a way to make this right?

CHRISTMAS TEARS by Rebecca J. Vickery

What's a widowed mother to do with two children to provide for and Christmas coming soon? Noelle Welborn is in dire straits when she loses her job, is cheated out of her pay, and has no relatives to which she can turn. Then they lose the roof over their heads. Sleeping in the car seems the only option left.

Officer Nick Stewart stops when he spies a familiar looking car parked in a church parking lot late one night. Sure enough, she's the same pixie-faced woman he warned before. When he discovers she has kids asleep in the car, he insists she park in his yard or go to the police station with him.

But what about the next night, and the next?

ROOM AT THE INN by Nan O'Berry

Welcome to Magic Hallow, Pennsylvania. On the day before Christmas Eve, Helena McCray finds herself driving from New York to Washington, D.C. with a car load of Felicity Adams designs. She wasn't expecting the storm of the century to send her car careening off the road. Rescued by James Buchannan, she is taken to a grand old Victorian he has been fixing up as a bed and breakfast.

Gift of the Magi has been handed down in James Buchannan's family since his great, great, grandfather brought his Russian bride home from Europe. But the Magi is a secret place where James can hide from the world. Helena McCray slowly melts his heart and together they find out the magic of the inn could be in opening their hearts to a new beginning.

BLAME THE MISTLETOE by Markee Anderson

Do you believe in love at first sight? Or love after a kiss under the mistletoe? Neither did Tasha or Cal...

Tasha Adams owns a bakery and catering shop after losing her nursing career. Lack of confidence and low self-esteem make her an almost hermit, especially during the holidays.

Calvin Miller, busy doctor and bachelor, receives a sudden and unexpected visit from his young niece and nephew for the holidays. There go his work plans.

Then a fateful collision on a staircase changes all their lives.

EXCERPT:

A SEASON OF MIRACLES:

John Oldham now sat in a straight-backed chair near the fire. She sat in the rocker opposite him and felt herself nodding until he spoke her name.

Jerking back to full alertness, she gave him a worried look. "Sir, is anything—?"

"I didn't mean to startle you, Mrs. Ross. It's just that we need to talk about sleeping arrangements. And please, could you dispense with calling me sir?"

"Oh, forgive me, Lieutenant Oldham. I—"

"No, I meant you should call me John."

"Very well, Sir – uh – John, if that is what you prefer,"

"It is, and may I call you by your given name as well?

Caroline looked at her hands resting in her lap. She knew this would not be proper, but then having the man sleeping in her house wasn't proper either. "Yes, of course. Please do."

"Thank you, Caroline."

The way he said her name as he looked at her caused color to rise in her cheeks.
