Beyond the Book. I Don't Think I'd Mind

“How do you feel about having one of your novels translated into another language? Is there a particular nationality of reader that you think would enjoy your novels more than others?”

I really don’t think I’d mind. It would be very nice to think my book was available to a whole new population. It isn’t about more sales that would bring more money. It’s all about sharing my book with others who might enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. I think this is true for most authors. We write because we love it, not because we expect to become rich and famous for our books. Of course if you want to buy more books and make me rich and famous go for it. LOL. I promise I won’t complain.

One real issue I can see is that cultures vary so much from country to country. I think Americans are a lot more casual and liberated than many people so I wonder if they’d relate to my hero or heroine. It’s quite possible that they wouldn’t understand our lifestyle or our values. On the other hand that might be one reason they’d be interested in reading a foreign book. Maybe they’d like to see how other people live. I’ve had people from Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America who’ve visited my blog so maybe they’d like to read my books in their own language. 

Another issue would be the finer points of language. Some common expressions in use in the United States might not be understood by people in other countries. Some of those people might be very offended by what they read. I sent a book to a lady in Sweden who speaks English, but after I sent it I worried about it. I wrote about some sensitive issues, and I hope she reads English well enough to fully understand my treatment of those issues.

Would a translator be able to correctly convey what I was trying to say? I’m not sure. I would be worried about it, but i don’t think I’d let it stop me from letting the book be translated. 

I don’t know which group of people would enjoy my novels more than others, but I’m thinking maybe people in European countries such as France, Spain, Switzerland, etc. Life in industrialized countries is probably the same as ours in many respects.

Greenville, Mississippi

June, 1868

 

“Evening, Marshal.”

 

“Good evening, Miss Winston.” Zack McAlister greeted the young school teacher with a nod and a tip of his Stetson before setting his hat squarely back on his head.

 

“I brought you some cookies,” she told him, “as a thank you for stopping those boys from tipping over our privy.”

 

“It was my pleasure.” Accepting the proffered plate of cookies, he added, “I’m sure my deputies and I will enjoy these immensely.”

 

About to open the door leading to his office and step inside, Zack was halted by Gloria Winston’s next words. “I absolutely love your accent. It’s so…so…New Orleans.”

 

“Why thank you, ma’am.” Zack took another step forward, anxious to extricate himself from the unwanted attention. “If you’ll excuse me, Miss Winston, I have reports to complete.”

 

“Please, Marshal, call me Gloria.”

 

He reached for the door handle and nodded. “Good day to you, Gloria.”

 

“Good day, Marshal.”

 

“Another batch of cookies?” Pete Bailey asked when Zack came through the door, a snicker slipping through the deputy’s handlebar mustache, the sound of his laughter followed quickly by a broad, tobacco-stained grin.

 

Zack turned toward Pete and shot him a glare. “I don’t hear any complaints from you or Tom when you’re enjoying your fill.”

 

“I just wish these young fillies would learn how to cook something substantial, like a stew or a loaf of bread. A man can’t live on cookies alone.”

 

Zack sat the plate down on the corner of the desk and took a seat on the other side. It had been the same for the past two months, ever since he’d come to Greenville from New Orleans to take over for the ailing sheriff. He couldn’t walk down the street without one of the town’s available young women throwing herself at his feet. It had been a novelty at first, but now it was just plain tiring. Zack could almost feel his jaw twitching from the hundreds of smiles he’d forced across his face in the name of civility.

 

“I wish they’d just give up,” Zack muttered. “Surely they can see I’m not interested.”

 

“You McAlister boys do tend to attract every available female for miles. It was that way for Matthew, then Jake. It’s your turn to wallow in the McAlister charm.”

 

“I don’t want to wallow in anything. I just want to do my job.”

 

“You know what you need, Zack. You need a wife,” Pete said. “Then, this parade of girlies would stop.”

 

“I’m not in the market for a wife. And if I were, there’s not one that interests me in all of Greenville.”

 

“What about that doctor lady? You two seem to get along just fine.”

 

“We get along because we’re both professionals, out to do a job. And, Suzanne Martindale is the last woman I’d want for a wife.”

 

“She seems fine to me. She sure is a looker.”

 

“She’s also opinionated, stubborn, tied to her career and, at her best, infuriating.”

 

“It sounds to me as if you’ve given the doc some serious thought.”

Zack shook his head, dispelling any notion of ‘thinking’ about Suzanne Martindale. “My idea of a good wife is someone who stays home, keeps a neat house, raises the children, and is waiting by the door when her husband gets home from a long, hard day at work.”

 

“That sounds about right, assuming all you want is to make babies and eat a home-cooked meal.”

A Word With The Author

1.Did you always want to be an author?

 

No, at least not a fiction author. I’d always pictured myself writing non-fiction, and did for a while. Until one day while at work at the university, a co-worker offered me a romance novel to read on break. I foolishly said, “Anyone can write one of those.” She dared me to try, and the rest is history.

2.Tell us about the publication of your first book.

 

It was right after the 1996 Romance Writers of America Conference in Dallas, TX. I’d attended a presentation by Kensington Books about their new line of contemporary romances, part of a venture with Walmart. My critique partner and I had both just finished a book each and decided to submit. They bought both our books within hours of one another. We still, to this day, argue over who got the first call.

3.Besides yourself, who is your favorite author in the genre you write in?

 

Because I cross genres, I have a number of favorites. Overall, it has always been Elizabeth Lowell. I love her ability to teach you something with each book, while still driving you crazy with steamy romance and undeniable HEAs.

4.What's the best part of being an author? The worst?

 

The best: Having been blessed with the gift of creativity. I’ve always been a little crazy/silly, and writing romance gives me a great outlet for letting my imagination shine through. The worst: Having to edit. I hate edits.

 

5.What are you working on now?

 

I’m part of new series of books, each by a different author. The stories are all set on a fictitious island and will release 6 weeks apart. The stories range from sweet to ultra-steamy (yes, that’s me), and everything in between. My first story (the second book in the series) is titled An Island Affair. It features an emotionally damaged heroine, and a physically damaged hero. Two lonely, damaged people destined for a week-long affair with an agreement that they’ll walk away at the end.

Sometimes, I felt like a small white mouse housed in a cage with lots of small white mice, whose playground activities involved eating, sleeping, and continually revolving on the exercise wheel. Just like one rodent friend—who I named Mr. Happy-Go-Lucky, having a field day back-flipping from the top of the spinning wheel—something happened. Unexpectedly, I found myself airborne.

Not hurt, a sense of disappointment overcame me, plus a bit of confusion, and a whole lot of colorful adjectives too numerous to list. I, mostly known as Hattie Cooks, shook off the pine shavings and joined the rat race. Sometimes, life sucked.

But wallowing? Not a good solution.

Being positive? A better one.

In most cases, a pitstop was a good idea, and I found comfort in my chocolate stockpile. And in most cases, I found empty shelves, for I had little dough to supply my habit due to the loss of my adored job as an assistant buyer at Sommerville’s top-class department store, Tucker’s, and the subsequent low-paying temporary ones I reluctantly took in the interim. Due to the expenses of rent, food, utilities, budgeting became my new compadré. However, for my recent birthday, Mom suggested friends and family provide me with treats. They were generous—gifting lots and lots of my favorite M&Ms in vast colors and flavors.

Mom’s idea totally rocked as the best birthday gift ever.

From outside my door, I heard Allan Wellborn smack the doorframe.

“You know how to find me.”

I roused from my ruminations and banged my forehead against the wall.

Saturday Sample and Weekend Writing Warriors

Welcome to Saturday Sample and Weekend Writing Warriors. Today I'm sharing an excerpt from my current work in progress. The book is titled Tarnished Silver, and I have no official blurb to share. The set up is like this. 

My heroine Brittany Granger is a private investigator who has been summoned to the home of the Silver family. The Silvers operate The Silver Firm, a prestigious law practice. They are famous, rich, and some say unscrupulous. She has no idea why they want to see her.

Last Week:

Brittany followed him into the mansion, a Georgian Revival made of dark brick.  The entrance hall had marble floors covered with expensive looking oriental rugs.  Old oil paintings adorned the walls, and the mahogany furniture she saw looked costly and antique, like pieces that had been in the family for generations.  The man stopped in front of a massive wooden door and softly knocked before they entered.

“Sir, Miss Granger is here.”

A tall, thin man with neatly combed white hair rose from a navy leather wing chair beside the fireplace and extended his hand to Brittany.  “How do you do, Miss Granger?” 

“I’m fine, thank you.  And you?”

“I’m well.”  He indicated the chair in front of his ornately carved, enormous desk.  “Won’t you sit down?”

Excerpt: This is a WIP so if something grabs you that I need to change please say so. I threw in an extra sentence with my excerpt so we have eleven..

Brittany sat down and waited, admiring Silver’s polite formality in a casual world.

“Did you have any trouble getting to Greenville, Miss Granger?  The weather is terrible, and Fairfield is an hour away.”

“No, it wasn’t a bad trip at all.”

“Good, good.  I expect you’re curious about why I wanted to see you.”

“I imagine you want the services of a private investigator, but I have no idea why you’d pick me.”  She shrugged. “Don’t get me wrong.  I do a good job for my clients, but I’m still small potatoes.  You could have anybody you wanted.”

If the worst should happen, would his greatest legacy be the love of the fire service or the love for his wife? In the end, the unforeseen might have the greatest significance of all.

Chief Hamilton heard a second loud explosion and looked toward the front door of the house when he saw Rogers sit up, looking that direction. Two firefighters, carrying a hose, stumbled out followed by a large billow of black smoke. Two men. There should have been three.

Without hesitating Rogers radioed in. “Attack, give me a PAR. I see two of you. Shouldn’t there be three?”

Chief Hamilton’s anxiousness jumped a notch.

There was no reply.

Rogers radioed again. “Repeat. Attack, Engine Two, give me a PAR.”

Chief Hamilton watched the two firefighters who'd exited turn and look around. He could tell from their gestures and their heads craning, they were unsure of where their third person was.

In those long, silent seconds, the air hung static with anticipation.

Finally, Bentley’s voice came over the radio. “Attack. PAR times two. Should be three. We have a man inside.”

Bentley was out. Who was the second firefighter with him and who was still inside? Chief Hamilton’s anxiety was building. This fire was growing even with the large amounts of water being poured onto it, and now, they had a man inside.

Rogers and Hamilton watched as first Bentley, then the second firefighter pulled off their helmet, mask and hood. When the second firefighter turned toward Bentley, they could see it was the rookie, Hedrick. Andy was the firefighter still inside.

Before Chief Rogers could initiate the Rapid Intervention Team, a high-pitched chirp went off. Everyone froze. A firefighter’s personal alert safety system device only went off if the firefighter was down and incapacitated for over thirty seconds.

Andy must be down.

A project ten years in the making, Fully Involved is Lindy Bell’s debut novel and avidly reflects her admiration and love of the fire service. Thoroughly researched, the quest for accuracy for the book led Lindy to participate in the Plano Citizens Fire Academy, attend classes and accompany firefighters on ride outs. Alex trotted inside to pay. Dana stood in the aisle ahead of him, drinking coffee from a Smiley’s container, her back to him.

What the hell, he’d give it a whirl. “Hey Dana, nice to see you.”

She turned. Her expectant look morphed into confusion.

Why hadn’t he changed after his trip to the mall? He pulled the T-shirt tighter by stuffing it into the back waistband of his shorts and leaned an elbow on the counter. The casual look. “I thought I saw you fondling the peaches. With Sunny and Noelle. One minute you’re there, next you’re gone.”

Irritation crossed her face. She checked her watch.

“You don’t have a clue about who I am, do you?” She’ll recognize me. I’ll make her see me. The stubborn gene from his grandmother.

“Let me give you a hint.” He cleared his throat and bounced on his heels as if limbering up for a sprint. “Cha-cha-cha changes,” he sang like a demented fool. Then repeated the refrain.

Heat rose in her face and he watched, fascinated as a drop of sweat slid down her neck into the V of her blouse. He stopped as suddenly as he’d begun. What the hell are you doing?

“Look, I’ve got to run.”

She was gone before he could explain, apologize…or cover his face with a paper bag.

Davor’s men erected his tent for him before they left. Dark came early around Kolada, and by the time I deemed it safe to sneak back to his campsite, I needed the candle he handed me to see the large interior filled with furs. Their softness invited me in. 

 

“I’m from Lev, originally,” he said as he handed me a small silver goblet. “This wine is from my own family’s vineyards.” 

 

Could this have been more perfect? I took a sip. 

 

Although I enjoyed the taste of the rich red wine, we didn’t waste much time drinking it. As he undid the leather lacings of my bodice, I appreciated his confident touch. How different from the bumbling boys I’d bedded so far. By the time his hand ran gently up the inside of my thigh, barely touching the parts of me only a lover touched, I knew I’d made a wise choice. I’d be visiting this man’s tent as often as he wished.

Sherrie Cronin is the author of a collection of six speculative fiction novels known as 46. Ascending and is now in the process of publishing a historical fantasy series called The War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters. A quick look at the synopses of her books makes it obvious she is fascinated by people achieving the astonishing by developing abilities they barely knew they had.

 

She’s made a lot of stops along the way to writing these novels.  She’s lived in seven cities, visited forty-six countries, and worked as a waitress, technical writer, and geophysicist. Now she answers a hot-line. Along the way, she’s lost several cats but acquired a husband who still loves her and three kids who’ve grown up just fine, both despite how odd she is. 

 

All her life she has wanted to either tell these kinds of stories or be Chief Science Officer on the Starship Enterprise. She now lives and writes in the mountains of Western North Carolina, where she admits to occasionally checking her phone for a message from Captain Picard, just in case.
