Taming the Rake

Taming the Rake

by Erica Ridley

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Enjoy a fiery, passionate enemies-to-lovers revenge romance from a New York Times bestselling author!

All her life, Miss Gladys Bell was a wallflower whose parents despaired of her ever attracting a suitor. Then she met the man of her dreams, who said she was the woman of his. One passionate night later, Gladys awaits a marriage proposal that never comes. Reuben Medford, the ton’s most notorious rake, doesn’t even remember her name.

Thanks to his cold-hearted callousness, Gladys lost her reputation, her dowry, and her chance at love. But now she’s back, and bent on revenge. He’s trifled with the wrong woman: This wallflower has thorns. Once Gladys holds that damnable rake’s arrogant, fickle heart in her hands… She’ll crush it, just as he did to her.

This time, he’ll remember her name.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
Mr. Medford had given Gladys more attention in the past ten minutes than her one-and-only suitor intended to show her in their entire shared lifetimes. She couldn’t lose it. Not this passion, not these kisses, and certainly not Mr. Medford.
He was supposed to be untouchable—yet here he was, touching her. Gladys was doing what every other wallflower had only dreamed of. What she had only dreamed of. Now, how could she keep the dream from ending?
One kiss wasn’t enough. According to Mother, this meant Mr. Medford had selected her to be his bride. Even the wallflowers had said he was on the hunt for a wife. Why he’d set his sights on Gladys, she could not fathom, but she was determined not to lose his attention now that she had it.
Not because Mr. Medford was handsome or wealthy or a potential future viscount, but because he saw her. Because he picked her. Because he wanted her and found her desirable.
All of which required immediate action.
If Gladys didn’t secure an official marriage proposal, here and now, in the morning it would be too late. Mr. Alsop would show up at the hotel willing to saddle himself with Gladys if it meant getting his hands on the pasture in Wales, and Gladys’s father would sign the betrothal contract without blinking an eye.
The first banns would be read tomorrow afternoon, and the unhappy marriage would take place a fortnight hence… unless Mr. Alsop was so eager to gain possession of the promised land that he procured a special license and married Gladys within days.
Whichever suitor was first to present himself to her father would be the one Gladys ended up married to. It couldn’t be Mr. Alsop. Not now and not ever. She wanted this. She needed Reuben Medford. But how could she convince the man every unmarried young lady lusted for to choose her?
Alessandra opened the door. The women froze, speechless, when they came face-to-face with two men who were dressed like…Nazis, complete with party uniforms and gear, including cap, blouse, breeches, badges, patches, insignia, leather belts, boots, and armbands. If this was a joke, it was a bad one, thought Hadley.
“Fräulein Montenegro?” one of the men asked.
“Y-yes.” Alessandra stepped forward.
“And who might this be?” he asked, indicating Hadley.
“N-no one. A friend. We’ve come by—I’ve come by—to look over the interior. I’ve been hired by Herr Muller to redecorate the palazzo.”
“It is Herr Muller who sent us to check up on you.”
“Check up?”
“He recalled that when he met you here last week, you took some pictures of some of the interior rooms and the artwork hanging on the walls. That was unfortunate.”
“The artwork is no longer here, as you can see.”
“We are aware of that. We need to see your cell phone.”
“Do you have some form of identification?”
“I assure you we are legitimate.” He extended his hand. “Your cell phone…?” he demanded.
“This is private property. I am not in the habit of…”
Suddenly, a loud slap resounded as the officer backhanded Alessandra across her face. She cried out and held her hand over her stinging, swollen cheek. The man grabbed Alessandra’s purse, shook out the contents on a side table, and confiscated the phone. So, no joke. These men were deadly serious.
My Review:
Let me begin by saying that I don't know much of anything about art either stolen by the Nazis or in a museum. I've heard the names of some of the artists she spoke of, but whether or not the provenance of the discovered art is real or not I don't know. Ms. Baron seems to know a lot about art so I'm guessing she used real works of art in her book. It doesn't really matter, though. Is there anyone among us who wouldn't be intrigued at the chance to discover a missing masterpiece? l think the Nazi connection makes it even more interesting.
I first met our heroine Hadley in book 1 of this series. She hasn't changed a lot. She's still independent, strong, and knows her own mind. Yes, it gets her into trouble, but so far she's doing okay. She might, however, be a little more domesticated in this book. You'll see what I mean when you read the end.
Luca, her amorous Italian husband still can't live without her and moves heaven and earth to find her when she disappears.
I always enjoy the setting in a Baron book. It fits the plot so well.
If you're at all interested in stolen masterpieces, Nazis on the prowl, and a puzzle to solve I think you'd be happy with this book.
Ms. Baron, write us a story about the Amber Room. I'd love to see Hadley find it.
Beyond the Book: Somebody's Darling
Blurb:
He finally found the love of his life…
150 years after his death.
Confederate soldier Jesse Spenser died in the battle of Gettysburg in 1863, and his restless spirit has remained earthbound ever since. Usually invisible, he spends his days watching tourists visit the battlefields and fighting with his ghostly arch-nemesis, a Union soldier named Joel.
There is one source of light and happiness in Jesse’s lonely existence.
Lucy Westbrook.
Lucy works as a waitress in a tavern in Gettysburg. Gentle and kind, she’s a vision of loveliness. Unseen, Jesse watches her work, falling more in love with each passing day.
Jesse aches to make his presence known to Lucy, but she’s terrified of the ghosts that are said to haunt Gettysburg. Gathering his nerve, he finally appears to Lucy and befriends her, letting her believe he’s a Civil War reenactor.
Lucy grows rather fond of Jesse, looking forward to his daily visits.
Until the day she tries to touch him…
My Review:
I enjoy sweet ghost stories, I don’t read scary ones, and books about the Civil War so when I found this one on Amazon I decided to check it out. I did enjoy the book, but it does require a voluntary suspension of disbelief. I mean who ever heard of ghosts running around in the bright sunshine in the middle of the day? I always associated ghosts with darkness. Once you get into the proper mindset the book is a nice little romance.
My favorite character was the earthbound spirit of Jesse. He fought for the South and died at Gettysburg. For one thing it made me sad to think of all the years he’d been hanging around just waiting for something to happen so he could move on. He was poor in life, but he was a gentleman in all ways. He was a gentle soul in spite of his feud with Joel a Yankee who also died at Gettysburg. I was curious why they hated each other so much now that their earthly journey had ended. It was interesting when I found out. His love for Lucy both delighted and tormented him. What future could there possibly be for a ghost and a living girl?
Fillis, another earthbound spirit was also a favorite of mine. She had suffered during her life, but she loved all the soldiers and acted as a mother to them.
Lucy was a plucky young lady. I don’t blame her at all for being scared of the ghosts. I would be myself. I think she had a lot of courage to see Jesse after she knew the truth about him.
The ending of the story will please many of you romance lovers out there. It’s a feel good ending that defies the natural laws of nature, but it worked well anyway.
Does anyone want to guess how things ended? I won’t tell you if you’re right or wrong, but it would be interesting to know what you guessed.
Beyond the Book: The Power of an Early Morning Walk
 “What kinds of activities do you engage in while mulling over your story lines? Have they ever helped you get over a stumbling block?”
Probably the best way I mull over my story lines is by taking a nice walk, hopefully in the morning. My best thinking is done early before the pressures and responsibilites of the day. My favorite schedule was to roll out of bed, throw on my clothes, and set out for my walk. l had a set route that I followed every day so I didn’t have to decide which way to go. I could concentrate on my book with no distractions except for one awfully steep hill that left me breathless no matter how many times I walked it.
I’d finish my walk, and when I got home I’d brew some coffee and get my breakfast together. I’d check emails to see if I had anything to tend to, and then I got down to writing. I’d write until lunch time, and then my granddaughter and I would go to lunch. In the afternoon I’d proof what I had written and made any changes I needed to.
I have tried working with author friends, but unfortunately all of us were too nice to each other. We were afraid we’d hurt someone’s feelings so reading each other’s work wasn’t really helpful. I gave a few pages to one of my writing friends and asked her to really tell me what I needed to do. She was so scared to say anything that she made very lightly written corrections in pencil. There weren’t many corrections either. I think for this to work you might need to work with people who weren’t your personal friends. Our Monday fox said this works great for her, and I’m glad. Wish I could make it work for myself.
Did I ever get over any stumbling blocks while doing my walks? I really did. Naturally, I’d have to refine things when I finally sat down to write, but I those walks pushed me in the direction I needed to go.
Does anyone who writes want to share what they do?
Slaves of an Alien Game
Slaves of an Alien Game
by Nina Schluntz
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Science Fiction Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Series BLURB:
Game Wardens rule most of the galaxy by a fierce empire built on enslavement and brokered deals. The only means to earn one’s freedom is by playing in the Alien Games. Two slaves go in the arena, the survivor, if there is one, is given their freedom and crowned a king, earning them a small country to rule and slaves of their own.
To make the battle more fun for spectators, genetically enhanced monsters, sahalias, are given to the combatants, but they must found in a scavenger hunt. Five orbs, each hatching into a lizard that will bond with their keeper, are hidden on a random planet. If the competitor finds all five, they have a great imbalance of power over the other, who will have none. The sahalias are created with one purpose, to battle to the death and destroy the other competitor.
Blurb:  Slaves of an Alien Game - Book 1
Caden works at an all night diner in a small town near the interstate. When a man comes in late at night, asking for access to the roof, Caden knows the man is a bit off. But his ruffian nature and a small bribe makes Caden decide to let him go up.
“It’s a scavenger hunt,” the man says. Caden thinks he’s being helpful when he finds the item, a black orb, but when he touches it, he unknowingly becomes a competitor in an intergalactic competition that ends in a battle to the death. Manipulated and lied to, drugged by the alien Incubus, Raghib, whom he is now allied with, he must train his lizard battle creatures to fight for him on an unknown planet with rules he barely understands.
He has little chance to survive and although he wants to trust, Raghib, who will earn his freedom if Caden wins the battle, he worries he is simply being used. A bit of truth is revealed when one of the Game Wardens takes a liking to Caden, but his alien species is known to eat humans, so Caden isn’t sure if the desire is that of hunger or true romance.
Either way, Caden is nothing but a slave to their alien games.
Blurb:  Slaves of an Alien Game - Book 2
Caden is free. He won his battle and got what he wanted. Sent back to Earth with his won kingdom given to the slave, Raghib. However, life on Earth, back at the diner isn’t the same after living on an alien planet. He still suffers from withdrawals from the Incubus influence and drugs Raghib forced on him, and nightmares from the horrible battle to the death.
When a woman arrives, the latest competitor in the alien games, she offers him a chance to visit Raghib. All he has to do is be her slave during the games and help her find the orbs. He agrees and finds she is a higher level competitor than Raghib was, the hunt is on a deadlier planet, one covered in darkness and monsters.
Caden is eventually reunited with Raghib and gets to see the kingdom he won. Raghib is more broken from the battle and haunted by the brutality of it than Caden. He has a new lover and is driving his country to poverty so he can buy drugs to forget the pain. Caden turns to the Game Wardens for help, offering to go back in the arena again, with the woman he helped in the scavenger hunt. He is a fan favorite and knows their ratings will improve if he goes in again.
He arranged to go in as her pretend slave, in a role that will have safety features turned on so he will be in no real danger. He thinks its his idea to go back in. Confident he’s messing with the structures in place and trying to leverage the Game Wardens to change the deadly games into a nonlethal form.
However, it was their plan for him to go back in from the start. Caden is still nothing but a slave to their alien games.
Blurb:  Slaves of an Alien Game - Book 3
Caden’s long-term girlfriend on Earth is pregnant, and Caden is missing. Jenny worries he has been kidnapped and drugged again. A strange woman arrives, saying she knows Caden and where he is. She offers to take Jenny to him, if she helps her… they just need to find some orbs in a scavenger hunt. Jenny agrees, but is careful to not touch the objects. She doesn’t trust this woman.
They find four orbs and encounter the other competitor. The fifth orb is there, and Jenny is forced to pick it up. The other competitor forfeits and Jenny finds herself now in the games, the woman she’d been helping now announced as her deadly competitor.
She is taken to an alien planet and united with a distraught Caden. He confesses that he has a relationship with a man, an alien man, an Incubus named Raghib, and the woman Jenny must fight is Raghib’s daughter.
Caden is in an impossible situation, either his lover’s daughter dies or his childhood sweetheart dies, but there is a rule in the games, a protection for slaves and their offspring, who are viewed as profitable future slaves. A pregnant woman may not enter the arena, instead the sire must.
Caden is again forced to play in the games, but this time he has no sahalias to battle on his behalf, and safety features are not allowed. If Caden is to survive, he must find a way to not be a slave in their alien games.
EXCERPT Book 1:
I reached what looked like the bar and surveyed the drinks. I needed alcohol.
“You do not disappoint.” The voice was male and silky. I pried my eyes from the beverages I couldn’t identify and aimed my angry glare at the speaker.
He was tall and lanky, sporting a sharp graying goatee and a braided ponytail that trailed down past his waist. Both matched his gray suit and sparkling blue eyes. He was handsome but in an unnatural way, as though it was a quality designed to lure in prey. Instinctively, I knew who this man was.
“You’re one of the Game Wardens,” I said. He smiled like a tiger soothing a mouse.
“And you are the man making me rich. The fans love you. And that rant back there…” His eyes fluttered, and he groaned softly as if what I’d just done turned him on, or maybe the thought of how his TV ratings would spike was the reason. “You can’t buy that kind of drama.”
“You’re welcome,” I said because what the hell else was I supposed to say?
“I can’t decide if I want you to die or win in the battle.” He stepped closer, and I felt fear for no reason other than an instinctive fear you get when you know you are around something more powerful than you. He had this hungry look in his eyes, and I couldn’t help the words that came out.
“Is that because you can’t decide if you want to eat me or fuck me?”
His eyes widened. Perhaps no one had ever spoken to him like that before.
“You think I eat the people who die in the arena?”
“Why not? You’re already a sicko for making money off watching people battle to the death.”
“And you also think I have sex with the victors? Or are you implying it’s what you want, should you survive?” His eyes went down my body, appraising me.
“What? Don’t be weird,” I said. I pointed to the bottles on the counter. “Are any of these similar to alcohol on Earth? I want to get drunk.”
“You are the one who suggested it. And now you want me to get you drunk?”
“It’s the least you could do since I’m getting you such great ratings.”
“Oh, I do like you.”
“How flattering,” I said. “Buy me a drink then?”
Raghib finally appeared next to me. Where the fuck had he gone? Had he been apologizing to the pervert? I glanced at him to say as much, but mister slick put a finger on my cheek and turned my head back to him.
“If I am buying you a drink, you should keep your attention on me,” he said.
“Really? You think the viewers want to watch you schmooze me?”
His jaw fell open, and he gaped speechlessly at me. I wasn’t entirely sure what kind of fire I was playing with, but I didn’t want this guy to request me to personally entertain him or some shit either. And that look on his face was really starting to come across as sexual predatory-ish.
“Never mind,” I said. “I’ll just take some glamour. Nice talking.” I pushed on Raghib’s arm and moved away from creeper number three of the night.
“I leave you for two minutes, and I find you with a Game Warden?” Raghib hissed in my ear.
“He was thanking me for all the great ratings we are getting for his show,” I said. “What happened to you anyway? We’re tethered. How did you lose me?”
The Legend of the Mick
THE LEGEND OF THE MICK
by Jonathan Weeks
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:  Sports Biography

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
In the 1950s, America entered the television age. And Mickey Mantle, a country boy from Commerce, Oklahoma, was made for the moment. Signed by the New York Yankees as a teenager, he made his major league debut in 1951 as a right fielder alongside Joe DiMaggio. When DiMaggio retired at the end of the season, Mantle inherited not only Joltin’ Joe’s position in centerfield but also his stature as the face of the franchise. His boyish good looks, breathtaking power from both sides of the plate, and blazing speed on the basepaths made him an instant superstar. He won league MVP three times, came in second three times, was a 16-time All-Star, a Triple Crown winner in 1956, and a seven-time World Series champion.
Mickey Mantle’s career was the stuff of legend and in this book, Jonathan Weeks tells us why. Mantle’s extraordinary (and at times incredible) tales carry readers on an enthralling journey through the life of one of the most celebrated sports figures of the twentieth century.
THE SPOOK LIGHT
For more than a century, residents of the Tri-State Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas area have talked about a paranormal phenomenon known as the “Spook Light.” The light has been described by witnesses as an orb of fire about the size of a baseball or basketball. It flickers, dances, and spins—typically in an east to west pattern—while hovering above the treetops. When observers attempt to walk or drive toward it, it disappears.
According to popular legend, the “Spook Light” was first observed by Native Americans along the infamous “Trail of Tears” in 1836. Since then, a number of ghostly stories have circulated regarding its origin. One of the oldest tales centers around a Quapaw Indian maiden and her lover, who leaped to their deaths after the girl’s father forbade them from marrying. Another oft-told yarn involves the spirit of an Osage tribal chief who lost his head in battle and continues to search for it by lantern-light.
The “Spook Light” is commonly seen along a desolate stretch of road near the town of Quapaw, which is located just six miles from Mantle’s hometown of Commerce. The Yankee slugger grew up with these campfire tales and, like many teenagers of the era, enjoyed the associated benefits. By the time he was in high school, the deserted route known as Spooklight Road (or “The Devil’s Promenade” to some) had become a popular make-out spot. In his 1985 autobiography, Mantle remarked, “If you happened to be waiting at the Spook Light and you happened to have a girl with you, it was a pretty good place for necking.” Mantle’s first social outing with his future wife, Merlyn, was a triple date to Spooklight Road. The youngsters piled into Mantle’s 1947 Fleetline Chevy, which he had purchased with his Yankee signing bonus. Though Mantle was paired with another girl that night, he ended up asking Merlyn out on a date after he “struck out” with her friend.
The “Spook Light” continues to be an enduring legend despite scientific research conducted during Mantle’s teen years. In 1945, it was proposed that the phenomenon was caused by the refraction of vehicle headlights over a range of western hills. The following year, an Army Major named Thomas Sheard stationed a vehicle in the region he believed the so-called “Spook Light” was emanating from. He instructed the driver to flash the vehicle’s headlights at a designated time after dark. Observers in the vicinity of Spook Light Road were able to see the flashes. In 1965, Popular Mechanics magazine recruited professors from the University of Arkansas to investigate even further. They confirmed that distant headlights on Route 66 were being distorted by waves of heat, producing the phenomenon.
Those who still cling to paranormal explanations maintain that the “Spook Light” was seen long before the invention of automobiles and is, therefore, an unrelated phenomenon. The first verified written account of the eerie spectacle didn’t appear until 1935. Multiple sources have claimed that a booklet on the topic was released in the 1880s, but concrete evidence of it has not been uncovered. Detailed information about the ethereal orb—complete with driving directions to Spook Light Road—appear on the Joplin, Missouri official website.
A Word With the Author
Did you always want to be an author?
No. It’s funny how aspirations change throughout the life span. When I was in elementary school, I wanted to be an astronaut or astronomer. When I was a middle-schooler, I wanted to be a professional athlete or a sports broadcaster. When I got into my teens, I started thinking about writing as a career. I ended up working in the mental health field. I still wonder how that happened. I guess it’s true that you never really know where you’ll end up.
Tell us about the publication of your first book.
I wrote my first short story when I was about nine or 10 years old. I thought I would end up writing fiction, but my lifelong love of sports steered me in a different direction. By the time I got published for the first time, I was 37 years-old and had received hundreds of rejection letters for various failed projects. I had developed a pretty good working knowledge of baseball history by then and was looking for a topic that had not been overdone. Most baseball books are about the greatest players and the greatest teams. I thought it might be interesting to write about teams that were horrible. The book ended up being called, Cellar Dwellers: The Worst Teams in Baseball History.  It got published in 2012. It was a fun subject to write about.
Besides yourself, who is your favorite author in the genre you write in?
Hmm...Tough call. There are so many good sports writers.  From the current era, I really enjoy reading stuff by Peter Golenbock, Jane Leavy, and Tom Verducci. Writers from the past I have come to admire include Roger Kahn, Phil Pepe, Robert Creamer, and Shirley Povich.
What’s the best part of being an author? The worst?
The best part about being a writer is the escape it provides. When I’m sitting at my computer doing research or actually writing, I am somewhere far away from the troubles of everyday life. The worst part about being a writer happens when the right combination of words eludes you. There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to string together a coherent paragraph. And that does happen sometimes.
What are you working on now?
I’m in the process of finishing up a trilogy of New York Yankee biographies. Lore of the Bambino, which is about Babe Ruth, was published last year. The Legend of the Mick—my ode to Mickey Mantle—is the second to hit the shelves. I have a late draft of a Joe DiMaggio biography finished. I just need to find a home for it. It’s called Tales of the Yankee Clipper and it’s currently in the hands of an editor. Fingers crossed it gets accepted for publication.
