What do I say? The hot bachelor I was sure would never come to Christmastown is in front of me. But I came here to avoid dating. Beyond the Book: Buy Books!

 I know that I’ve posted this article before, but I post it every year either here or at my blog. I think it’s important, and I’d just like to remind everyone that books make great Christmas gifts. I promise you I’m giving books this Christmas. Anyway, here’s my article.

Besides being an author, I was a social studies teacher at our local high school. Some years before I retired, I noticed something very unusual going on in my first period class. I was standing in front of the class discussing feudalism with the kids, but three of the girls weren’t listening to me. Not that they always listened to me, mind you, but these girls weren’t talking. They weren’t passing notes, sleeping, or trying to do their homework before it was due. So, what were they doing? They were reading.

Yes, reading, and yes, it’s a very big deal. The majority of my students said they didn’t care for reading. They said it was boring. Almost, I don’t blame them. If I never read anything but textbooks, I’d think reading was boring too.

Okay, they don’t read. Is that a problem? You bet it is! Many literacy skills don’t get developed including reading comprehension, and let’s face it; people who read understand a whole lot more about what’s going on in the world. They score better on standardized tests too, and of course all of you readers know how reading can enrich your life. 

The girls were reading Twilight. I asked them if it was good, and you should have heard them carrying on. One of them told me she’d never read an entire book in her life until she started Twilight. She was almost finished with it and already had New Moon (sequel) ready to read. I was so intrigued I bought a copy of Twilight that very day.

I did like the book, but more importantly it impressed on me the need to provide young people with books they can enjoy, books that’ll make readers of them. So, this Christmas please consider a gift of books for any young adult or child on your list. In the long run it’ll be of more use to them than another sweater, video game, or electronic device.

The car rental rep was definitely not a warm-and-fuzzy gal, but Donna put her money on Mark. He could be charming when he needed to be.

His lips curved up into a smile. “Surely, you have at least one vehicle. I’m not picky.”

What a fib! It looked like the rep bought it. The woman leaned over the counter and pointed to an open garage area. “Go inside there and ask for Liam. Tell him you want the emergency special. It’s a car we save for people who fail to make reservations and yet still need a car.”

Donna prided herself on reading people and knew there wouldn’t be the expected happy ending to their dilemma. Her husband, on the other hand, effusively thanked the woman and slipped her a colorful bill in gratitude. Not being familiar with euros, it could have been anything from a fifty to a dollar.

As for Liam, he must have gone on break because they toured the garage for a good twenty minutes. They commented on car models not seen in the US and speculated if they’d get the convertible, Land Rover, or the Volkswagen Golf. After asking several employees in coveralls, they finally located Liam, which was a relief since one of the wheels on her suitcase had just seized up. She couldn’t mention the issue since her husband would point out they had perfectly good, non-tie-dyed suitcases at home with wheels that worked.

Liam, a man of few words, listened as Mark repeated his story, including the bit about searching for his ancestors. Instead of commenting on how great it was that Mark could have some Irish ancestry, Liam responded with, “She said the emergency special?”

“She did,” Mark replied with a nod.

“Aye.” Liam grimaced, then yelled something to a younger employee about getting the car.

She heard the emphasis on the even if Mark didn’t. A few minutes later a bright yellow car just a little bigger than a bicycle pulled up in front of Liam. “Here ya go. She’s small. You’ll only have her for a wee bit. She’s easy to park, too.”

All in all, it was a cute car—and very different from Mark’s usual sedan. Her husband remained speechless, while Donna handled practicalities. “Do you think our luggage will fit in it?”

“No problem.” He motioned to his young helper. “Pull out the back seat.”

“It has a backseat?” She couldn’t imagine anything fitting into the back.

“In theory. With the seat gone, it makes the trunk a bit roomier.” Liam sunk his hands in his pockets and made a slow circuit around their luggage. “We should be able to cram that inside. Don’t buy anything until you move to a larger vehicle.”

Both Liam and his helper speculated on how to pack the car, while Mark finally shook off his stupor. “I never knew they made cars this small. Can it possibly be safe?”

“We’re not going that far. Isn’t their town just ten miles or so out of Dublin?”

“There about.”

While their luggage was wrestled inside the mini vehicle, Donna strolled to the front. Eyelashes decorated the round, front headlights. “How cute. The car has eyelashes.”

Mark rolled his eyes and muttered something about how he tipped for this. While her husband acted surprised, Donna wasn’t. She had summed up the counter rep as possibly in the wrong profession and not to be trusted. Not the car they wanted, but it would serve.

The chestnut, uncharacteristically, took a misstep and then another. He had been going on a loose rein, but now he raised his head and Javrik tensed instantly. The sun was long past its zenith, but bright enough. There would be no concealment for any rider who left the woods or the walls, so he pulled up in the shelter of some stones that were still standing and waited, short sword in hand. He carried a bow, the sword and a dagger. Araks had never made armor. He had a fast horse, but that was no defense against an arrow. 

 

He had no defense of any meaningful kind against what he saw emerge from the woods. An Omani cavalry officer in full battle gear rode towards him at a flat-footed walk, and Javrik made a small sign of supplication to his gods because it was like looking at a ghost. They had assumed not one of those men still lived, yet here was one with armor, sword and spear, riding a horse capable of knocking his horse flat and running him over. It was what they were trained to do. 

 

The officer‘s bay charger stopped instantly, perhaps twenty paces from him. Javrik had not even seen the rider signal the horse. The horse wore armor, too, on its most vulnerable spots, gleaming in the sunlight. A single mounted Omani cavalryman was said to be worth three of any other because you could stop them only with a crossbow or a spear, neither of which he had. 

 

“Hola,” Javrik said, using the universal greeting, then switching to Omani, hoping it was good enough.  “I have no quarrel with you.” 

 

The officer removed his helmet; he had understood. He was older than Javrik but still young, with dark curly hair and a typical Omani profile—bold features, olive skin. And clean-shaven, which meant he was from a city somewhere. 

 

“Nor I with you,” he said.

As a child, I always enjoyed my art classes and I would get joyfully lost immersing myself in the process. However, it was only after my divorce, as a thirty-six-year-old, that I actively pursued an artistic outlet, to heal my inner pain. The art medium on which I chose to drown my sorrows was acrylic paint. I signed up for a twelve-week art class and began learning how to handle the tools of the trade, how to mix colours, how to discover the many types of brush strokes, and ultimately how to paint freely. Humans seek their sovereignty, even in the midst of creation. 

 

The teacher in question was an open-minded individual who taught the basic concepts of acrylic painting and then she allowed all her students to express their individuality. My first few paintings felt basic and a little childlike until I attempted a painting by Marc Chagall. At the time he was a favourite artist of mine. There was sadness, in the midst of bright colours, there was love mixed with hardships. His paintings were emotive. The painting I chose was one where an old man was carrying his home on his back while his bride, standing at the doorstep in her bridal gown, looked away as she saw herself moving further away from the village she once knew, during a pogrom; a persecution. There was immense sorrow in the painting and as I was honing my skills, I recall taking on all the sorrow and somehow blending it with my own personal situation: my divorce. It was a heightened, charged up feeling within. My eyes focused on the bride, standing at the doorstep, looking away as with each broad-brush stroke, my eyes welled and I found myself reliving my divorce, the end of an era, and the start of this vast, untethered new chapter.

Tania Kiaizadeh (Kia) was born in Teheran, Iran but in 1977, at the age of nine, she moved to Montreal with her family in order to avoid the political rumblings which gave way to the Iranian Coup d’état. With new beginnings in Montreal, adaptations to be made, she carved a life in North America. She received her Bachelor and Master of Education in Educational and Counselling Psychology, at McGill University. Since 1991, she has been working with her students in classrooms and in private practice, teaching them French as a second language, literature, history, as well executive functioning skills, while reminding them that they are limitless beings with gifts and capabilities that extend far beyond their imagination. It all starts with setting an intention and implicitly believing in yourself. Education, knowledge, self-improvement and self-empowerment paired with curiosity and her favourite aphorism, “leave no stone unturned,” define the fabric of her life. My Review

I decided to check some of the scripture references given in the book, and the ones I looked at matched the book text very well. As a Christian myself it pleases me for authors to write Christian books for children. However, it seemed to me that the language in the book could have been clearer. Also, I'm not sure why an author who is writing Christian literature would speak of Jewish festivals as a source of the spirit of Jesus. The Jewish people do not believe that Jesus was their Messiah. Lastly, I've never heard of the trinity being spoke of as celestial, divine bodies. Parents, the author does make some good points. I'd suggest you read the book and be ready to explain parts of the story in the child's vernacular.
