So far in my excerpts from Return Engagement my hero and heroine met on a beach ten years after his father broke them up. They find that all of their old feelings are still there even though she's engaged to another man. They've gone to a carnival together, and now they're walking back down the beach to their cars. He just gave her his jacket to wear and said he liked the idea of her wearing his clothes, like in high school.  They sat down on the sand to watch the moon, and both of them spoke at once. Elizabeth told him to speak first, and he told her she didn't really love her fiancé or she wouldn't have been flirting with and kissing him. Elizabeth just told him she can't stand it if he walks away again.Richard is speaking.

Richard jerked her hands away from her face and kissed them. “From my point of view things have finally taken a turn for the better.” Satisfaction oozed from his voice. “You’re willing to admit you don’t want to lose me. It’s taken ten years, but we’re back where we belong: together. Everything I ever felt for you came back the minute you spoke to me.” His voice lowered and became husky and persuasive. “Don’t tell me you didn’t feel it too.”

“I...” Elizabeth fell silent; after all, what could she say?

Elizabeth moaned and hid her face in her hands. Richard expected this surprise meeting to lead to something more than a hot dog on the beach, a casual meeting between two old...friends. I’ve done enough damage for one evening; I’m going home before I cause any more trouble. I’ve betrayed Alex and given Richard hope for a relationship with me when there is no hope.

She tried to jump up, but Richard grabbed her and held her close. “The wind is cold, and you can think just as well, no better, in my arms.”

Elizabeth gave up the effort to get away from him. There was no way she could argue with those hard, muscled arms. “Yeah, right, being in your arms clarifies everything!"

Richard turned slightly, an almost angry look on his face. “What the hell do you think you’re doing getting yourself engaged to Alex Crawford? It’s obvious to a blind man that you don’t love him. You’ve been teasing me and flirting with me all evening; you’ve even kissed me. ”

He stirred up the butterflies in her stomach when he gently caressed her shoulder. “Right now your body language makes me think if I wanted to take this snuggling any further you’d be willing.”

“Wha...” Elizabeth sputtered.

“You don’t strike me as the type of woman who’d pick a man for a night of sex and then go back to her fiancé like nothing had happened. If that’s true I don’t think you love Alex as much as you think you do. The question is: what are you going to do about it?”

The chilly wind that blew across the moon-drenched water snatched Elizabeth’s laughter away. “Who cares; sometimes it’s nice to be as irresponsible as a teenager.”

Richard tugged on her hand. “Let’s sit down and watch the moon awhile.”

Elizabeth willingly sank into the damp sand and cuddled close beside him; my gosh, the man had muscles she hadn’t known even existed!

“Richard, about this evening...”

“Elizabeth, about Alex...”

“You go first,” Elizabeth urged. Her shoulders marginally
relaxed. She wasn’t looking forward to telling him she couldn’t see him again.

Richard immediately removed his jacket and handed it to her. “Here, put this on.”

“Won’t you be cold?”

“I’m fine; I’ve got on long sleeves and that’s enough.” His eyes twinkled in the moonlight. “In fact, I kind of like the idea of you wearing my clothes; sounds like high school, huh?”

I've been sharing excerpts from Return Engagement. To recap, my hero and heroine met on a beach ten years after his father broke them up. All the old feelings are still there so he invites her to have a hot dog and go to a carnival with him. She's conflicted because she's engaged to another man.

****
Elizabeth was right. It
was a public place, and one set of eyes had been focused on them for almost the entire evening. The small, unremarkable man with washed out brown hair did not follow this time, but in his mind a new plan started to take shape, an infinitely superior plan.
****
“Look at the moon, Richard. Have you ever seen any
thing so big and beautiful? Isn’t it lovely the way it’s reflecting off the water?”

“Yes, but not as lovely as you are.” Richard made a sound of disgust. “That is so trite. You’ d think I could do better , but all evening I’ve had trouble saying what I mean.”

To recap, my hero and heroine have met on a beach ten years after his father broke them up. After having a hot dog and going to a beach front carnival, they realize the old feelings are still there. The only problem is that she's engaged to another man. This excerpt takes place immediately after she tells him they'll have to wait for another kiss. It seems as if her conscience is pricking her. The cat is a stuffed cat he won for her at a carnival.

Oh, lord! What time was it? She glanced at her watch. It was time to go home. Maybe Mother and Alex are worried about me. I haven’t behaved very well tonight. It isn’t fair to Alex for me to go out on a date with Richard. Oh, but you can’t call this a date! Yeah, right, and maybe the sun won’t come up tomorrow. She picked up her cat, and they started the walk back to their cars.

So what do you think? Will they go their separate ways or not?

I've been sharing excerpts from Return Engagement for the past few weeks. To recap, my hero and heroine have met on a beach ten years after his father broke them up. They find that the old feelings for each other are still there in spite of the fact that she's engaged to another man. He won a stuffed animal for her at a beachfront carnival, last week he kissed her. This excerpt is where I left off last week. I've done a bit of creative punctuation in this excerpt.

He gently stroked her cheek with his fingertips and sent little tingles up and down her spine. “That kiss thrilled me from head to toe; I...I don’t ever want to let you go.”

Elizabeth looked around at the crowds of people everywhere and blushed herself. “It’s one thing to kiss an actor in front of a camera, but I don’t like to be too affectionate in public; no more kissing right now, please.”

“Can I kiss you later when we’re alone?”

Elizabeth came down to earth with a thud when she thought of Alex. “No, we shouldn’t have kissed at all. It’s my fault, and I apologize.”

Richard laughed as if she’d said something hysterical. “You don’t have to apologize for that; you won’t hear any complaints out of me.”

I've been sharing excerpts from Return Engagement for the past few weeks. To recap, my hero and heroine have met on a beach ten years after his father broke them up. They find that the old feelings for each other are still there in spite of the fact that she's engaged. In today's excerpt, She has just told him he was sweet, and that was something he didn't want to hear. He said he'd rather be sexy, and he wanted to be her lover.

“Oh, that’s what you want, is it? I’m glad you made your intentions clear, Mr. Lovinggood.” She took a small step toward him and obligingly tilted her face upward.

She had known Richard wouldn’t waste his chance. His eyes darkened as he slowly bent his head. Elizabeth gasped when his lips touched hers. She had forgotten how his kisses made her knees shake, her heart pound, and almost burned her up from the inside out.

Richard finally lifted his head. “You have a lazy, satisfied smile on your face,” Elizabeth breathlessly observed.

“Yeah, I do; you held me close, and you kissed me like you’d never get enough of me.”

I'm sharing excerpts from Return Engagement. To recap, my hero and heroine meet on a beach ten years after his father a powerful senator broke them up. They've had hot dogs at the beach and gone to a carnival where he won her a stuffed cat. In spite of the fact that she's engaged to another man, the attraction between them is as strong as ever. We pick up where we left off last week.

“You are so sweet,” she declared, giving him a warm smile.

“I don’t believe it! Is that what I get for winning the cat?
Sweet? I don’t want to be sweet.”

Ignoring the crowds of people all around them, he jerked her close which made her breath leave her in a little woof. “I want to be your lover. I want you to say I’m sexy and that you want me. I can’t believe you think I’m sweet.”

Elizabeth willingly threw both discretion and Alex to the wind.

Saturday Sample: Blue 52

Welcome to Saturday Sample. I'm continuing today where I left off last week in Blue 52. If you'd like to read last week's post to refresh your memory, you can find it hereBasically, we've learned that the senator's son Richard was the President of the US. He and his wife are dead, and their bodies will have to be relocated because a high tech train line needs to go through the cemetery. We also learned that the senator has arthritis. Here we go with that excerpt. We are in the senator's point of view.

Richard Henry Lovinggood III, Hank to his family and friends, entered the study and gave his grandmother a kiss. “Hey, Grandma. What’s wrong with you?”

The senator’s heart gave a little leap. He looked so much like Richard! Tall and well-built with blond hair and beautiful blue eyes, he turned feminine heads everywhere he went. The expression in his eyes was different, though. Richard had burned within, but Hank had a peaceful, calm center. Elaine always said it was probably a legacy from his cursed mother because he sure didn’t get it from Richard’s side of the family. She was undoubtedly right about that.

Senator Lovinggood joined them in front of the fire. His old bones liked the warmth. “She’s upset because Morton Williams called today.”

“And?”

“Your parents will be disinterred on the twenty-third. We have to make arrangements.”

“I see.”

Senator Lovinggood blew his nose, the honking sound reverberating around the room. “Do you have any ideas about where you want to put them, Hank?”

“I do. I knew you couldn’t block the train forever, so I’ve been looking around. I visited a very nice cemetery this afternoon. Have you ever heard of Crystal Rivers?”

Elaine shook her head. “No. Where is it?”

“It’s about thirty minutes from here. It’s not a new cemetery, but it’s beautiful as far as cemeteries go.”

Elaine shrugged. “One place is as good as another.”

“If it isn’t a new cemetery, is there enough room for us to be buried there as well?” Senator Lovinggood worried.

“Yes, sir, there is. They’re willing to set aside an entire block of spaces for us.”

Senator Lovinggood’s face smoothed out. “Good. If you like it, Hank, that’s what we’ll do. Do you want to call Williams, or do you want me to? I know you don’t know him, so I’ll be glad to take care of it for you.”

“I’ll call him, Grandpa.”

Elaine cocked her head and stared at Hank. “Why have you decided to call Williams? You always tell Henry to take care of things like this.”

“Oh, no reason.” His eyes rested on the photo on the desk. “It’s just something I can do for Mother and Dad.”

Senator Lovinggood blew his nose again and wiped his eyes with his sleeve. “I know exactly how you feel. I’d give my right arm for the chance to help Richard one more time.”

Hank kissed his grandmother’s cheek. “Don’t worry, Grandma. It’ll be over and done with before you know it. Just think how proud Dad would be. His administration laid the groundwork for the Flash Train.”

“Yes, that’s true.”

The senator’s chest swelled with pride. “I’m proud of it too. The Flash Train can travel over three hundred fifty miles per hour.”

Hank rose to his feet. “I want to change clothes before dinner. I’ll see you guys in a minute.”

He dropped a kiss on his grandmother’s cheek and dashed upstairs.
“Just like Richard used to do,” Senator Lovinggood observed.

“Richard didn’t always change before dinner,” Elaine disagreed.

“No. Run up the stairs. Richard used to do that too.”

Elaine rolled her eyes. “I think I’ll change for dinner too.”

“You look fine to me.”

“No, I feel like changing.”

The senator shrugged. “I’m fine as I am.”

Elaine shot him a look he couldn’t define. “If you say

so.”

Really! Now what did she mean by that?

Blue 52 is the sequel to Return Engagement. I'm sharing excerpts from that on Sundays if you'd care to take a look. Blue 52 is for sale at Amazon and http://www.whiskeycreekpress.com

Welcome to Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors, your chance to sample the works of a talented group of authors. I've been sharing excerpts from Return Engagement. They've had hot dogs at a beachfront cafe and he won her a stuffed cat at a carnival. They've just left the shooting gallery, and she asked him if he was blushing after she bragged on him.

The color in Richard’s face deepened. “I don’t think so. It’s just the lights.”

“Oh, yes you are! You always used to blush when I teased you. Did I embarrass you?”

Richard ducked his head, a little gesture of vulnerability that probably sent her blood pressure sky high. “All right, my face does feel a little warm” he admitted, “but no, you didn’t embarrass me. It’s...well it’s kind of nice to have you flirt with me and brag on me. I’m surprised how bad I wanted to
show off and win that cat for you.”

At the end we finally get to meet our hero Hank, the president's son.

What did Grant know? He’d complain if he wanted to.

He sat down behind his desk and stared at a conspicuously displayed photo of his son, Richard. The photo had been taken on inauguration day. Richard’s wife Elizabeth stood at his side, looking so beautiful that even now it made his heart ache to see her.

Her face glowed with pride and happiness. How could anyone believe that two years later she would kill Richard and take her own life? “They’re all wrong,” he muttered as he made a gesture of repugnance. “I don’t care what anyone says; she did not shoot him.”

He removed a well-worn scrapbook from its place in the bottom drawer, caressing its smooth, cool surface. When he opened the scrapbook, Richard’s face laughed up at him. The photo had been taken right after his grandson, Hank, was born. This was exactly the way he remembered Richard, laughing and happy, his eyes alight with life and promise.

The whole family had celebrated Hank’s birth. Richard and Elizabeth had tried for years to have a baby. They had seen a lot of fertility specialists, but they’d almost given up hope when Elizabeth found out she was pregnant with Hank. Oh, yeah, he’d never forget those days. “The king of the world,” he muttered. “I felt like the king of the world.”

He turned the pages one by one as he had done so many times before. No matter how often he looked at the scrapbook, he never grew tired of it. Pausing on page five, he studied one of his favorite pictures. It had been taken on Richard and Elizabeth’s wedding day. I’m ninety-eight years old now, and I’ve never seen two people as much in love as they were.

The little half smile on his face faded as his old eyes glazed. It can’t be too much longer before I see Richard again; I can’t wait to find out what really happened that night. He supposed his faith required him to forgive whoever had murdered his son and daughter-in-law, but he daily prayed the perpetrator would burn in hell forever.

He flipped to the back of the scrapbook. God, I hate this part! He had thought of destroying the offensive newspaper articles, but without them, the record would be incomplete. President Lovinggood Murdered!the first headline screamed. First Lady Kills the Presidenttrumpeted another in huge, black letters.

Unwilling to read any more, he turned back to the front of the scrapbook. Look, there was a good picture of Richard and Joan taken in their Halloween costumes. Richard must have been five or six at the time. They looked so much alike some people had thought they were twins, but Richard was two years older than Joan. He remembered that Richard hadn’t wanted his little sister to

“Put that damned thing away!” a strident, furious voice demanded from the door.
Elaine Lovinggood, the senator’s wife, had gone red- faced with anger. “Why are you torturing yourself, Henry? I told you not to look at it anymore.”

 “Elaine...”

“I don’t want to hear it.”

“Elaine...”

“Be quiet, Henry!” She slapped the door with the flat of
her hand and made the senator jump. “I loved Richard as much as you did, but he’s dead, and no amount of mourning in the world can bring him back. You’ve wasted the last thirty years grieving for our dead son, and I can’t take it anymore.” Her voice rose again. “For the love of God, don’t ruin the last days of our lives!”

The senator tossed the scrapbook into the drawer and slammed it shut. Elaine’s high blood pressure constantly worried him, and her doctor described her heart as a ticking time bomb. It wouldn’t do to upset her.

“I didn’t mean to worry you,” he apologized. “I started thinking about Richard after Morton Williams called.”

“What did he want? He’s a slimy, slithery slug if you ask me.”

Elaine had always loved words. She had a huge vocabulary and especially enjoyed using alliteration. In fact, she and Richard had had some kind of word game they used to play. The last time they all dined together, she and Richard had tried to play the game using the letter x, but both of them had to admit defeat.

“Williams was calling to tell me that Richard and Elizabeth will be disinterred on November twenty-third. We’ll have to make arrangements for them."

The fire died in Elaine’s eyes as she sank down on the sofa in front of the fireplace, her mouth a drooping, thin line in her wrinkled face. “Why couldn’t I have just died myself and gotten it over with? I’d rather die than see those coffins come out of the ground.” She glared at the senator. “You’d
better not get all worked up.”

The senator flushed, feeling like a schoolboy caught in some kind of mischief. She always made him feel this way when she criticized him. “I...”

Elaine turned toward the hallway when she heard the front door slam. “Hank’s home.”

I've been sharing excerpts from Return Engagement. To recap, my hero and heroine met by chance on a California beach ten years after his father, the powerful senator Henry Lovinggood, broke them up. They had hot dogs at a beach front cafe, and now they've gone to a carnival where she asks him to win an animal for her at the shooting gallery. There's been a lot of flirting going on. Oh, yeah, she's engaged to another man.

I've skipped the part where he actually did the shooting. The sights were off, but he adjusted for them and won her a stuffed cat by hitting ten in a row.

Elizabeth tucked her arm through his and squeezed. “This is so exciting! Nobody ever won anything for me before. You're such a good shot. I bet you’re one of the FBI’s best marksmen.”

Is he blushing? I bet it’s been a long time since a woman made him blush.

She couldn’t resist the urge to tease him. She came to a halt and looked intently into his face. “Why, Richard, are you blushing?”

I've been sharing excerpts from Return Engagement. To recap, my hero and heroine met on a beach ten years after his father broke them up. They ate hot dogs at a beachfront cafe, and now they've gone to a carnival where she asks him to win a prize for her at a shooting gallery. Don't forget that he's an FBI agent from a powerful senator's family, and she's an A-list Hollywood actress who's engaged to another man.

Richard groaned. “Those guns are probably all sighted wrong so you can’t win. Couldn’t I just buy you one instead?”

“No, that won’t do at all. Never mind. It’s okay if you don’t think you can do it,” she replied with no hint of a smile whatsoever. Would he try to win a prize for her or not?

“Okay, I know a challenge when I hear it.” Richard stepped up to the counter and inspected the row of guns provided by the arcade. “I’ll win you an animal if I have to stay here all night.”

I've been sharing posts from Return Engagement. To recap, my hero an FBI agent and my heroine an actress accidentally meet on a beach 10 years after his father broke them up. It's obvious that there is still something between them in spite of her engagement to prominent attorney Alex Crawford. They agree to have a hot dog together. In last week's post, my hero has put his arm around her and told her he'd like to kiss her. She liked the idea.

Shame abruptly flooded her. For some reason her thinking seemed muddled and messy tonight. I have a wonderful life. I have everything I ever wanted: wealth, fame, a great job, and they don’t make men any better than Alex Crawford. How can I risk my happiness by cheating on him, especially with a man like Richard? There’ s no possible hope of a future with him.

From under lowered lashes she caught sight of the amusement park in the distance. “Look, Richard, I see the merry-go-round; let’s hurry.” She broke away from him and sprinted down the beach with Richard right behind her.
After they rode the merry-go-round a couple of times, Elizabeth gave up her attempt to keep things impersonal.

I've been sharing excerpts from Return Engagement. To recap, my hero and heroine have accidentally met on a beach ten years after his father broke them up. To say they have unfinished business is an understatement. They've gone to a beach-side cafe for hot dogs, and now they're on their way to an amusement park. He took her hand last week.

They had only gone a little way when he drew her against his side and put his arm around her. Really! I shouldn’t have held hands with him, she thought. What was I thinking?

Before she could scold him Richard came to a stop. Her knees started to shake as his eyes bored into hers. “Are you going to slap my face if I try to kiss you? I hate getting slapped, but I’m having a hard time keeping my hands to myself. ”

A heady sense of feminine power rose up in Elizabeth and almost made her heart bounce out of her chest. Richard Lovinggood wanted to kiss her!

Welcome to Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors, your chance to sample the writing of a talented group of authors. Links to the entire lists can be found below the excerpt. For the past few weeks I've been sharing excerpts from Return Engagement. To recap, my hero and heroine meet on a beach ten years after his father broke them up. She agreed to have a hot dog with him even though she's engaged to another man. They've just finished eating and are walking down the beach. I've skipped a few paragraphs so you missed him talking her into it. In that part we learned that she was breaking a date with her fiancé to go to the amusement park with Richard.

“No roller coasters. I’m scared to death of them.”

Richard snickered at her. “Yes, ma’am, no roller coaster rides. Merry-go-round okay?”

“Yes, and so is the Ferris wheel.” She chunked a small piece of ice at him to pay him back for mocking her fears.

They picked up their trash, threw it in the garbage can, and continued their walk down the beach. They hadn’t gone ten steps before Richard took her hand. Elizabeth tried to breathe normally.

So what do you think? Will she let him hold her hand or not?

Last week she told him he was too possessive, but he said you're supposed to take care of the one you love. He's been pushing her pretty hard about Alex the guy she's engaged to. I've skipped a few lines, and we're picking up here:

“I told you it was just tentative plans, Richard. Let it go at that.” Elizabeth knew she had made firm plans to meet Alex and her mother. She’d have some major explaining to do tomorrow, and oh, how she dreaded it. Without lying she couldn’t think of any way to make this evening with Richard sound like anything other than what it was. And she didn’t make a habit of lying.

Richard surprised her by obediently dropping the subject of Alex and her dinner plans. “Be it far from me to argue about Alex Crawford. Are you finished? If you are let’s go to that amusement park down the beach and have some fun.”

What do you think? Will she go with him or go back home to her fiancé?

Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors

Welcome to Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors, your chance to sample the work of a talented group of authors. For the past few weeks I've been sharing excerpts from Return Engagement. So far, my hero and heroine have met on the beach ten years after his father broke them up. The thing is, she's engaged, and he keeps questioning her about the man. Last week she accused him of being too possessive. This is his reply.

“Like I used to be, you mean? I’ve gotten much worse since then. Maybe it’s my FBI training kicking in, but I’d insist you check in with me, and I’d check in with you too. I wouldn’t be able to sleep until I knew you were all right.” He paused a moment. “Anyway, if you really love someone how could you not try to take care of her? Or him. Isn’t that what you do for the ones you love?”
