Saturday Sample: Blue 52

Welcome to Saturday Sample. For the past few weeks I've been sharing samples from Blue 52. So far we've learned that President Richard Lovinggood was murdered by his wife who then committed suicide. Their son Hank was raised by his grandfather Senator Henry Lovinggood. A new high speed train is coming through the cemetery where President Lovinggood is buried, and Hank has made plans to open the coffins once they are disinterred so he can see his parents. My heroine Kathryn Sinclair was introduced last week. She's bringing a pizza to have lunch with her uncle who is a funeral home director. She's surprised to see so many cars bearing government license plates in the parking lot.

Kathryn grabbed the arms of the chair she had just taken to keep herself from jumping up and running to her car. “Everyone knows the bodies at Knollwood will have to be moved for the Flash Train, but why is the president’s body being brought here?”

Ira told her. “I don’t blame the boy. I’d want to see them too.”

“I suppose so,” Kathryn answered even though she didn’t know if she’d look or not. Her parents had died ten years ago in a car crash. Looking at their dead bodies now seemed a little ghoulish.

She only nibbled at her lunch. As soon as she decently could, she excused herself and hurried to her car. Thank goodness her lab was only ten minutes away. She had a phone call to make and wanted to do it on a secure line.

Reaching the lab, she parked her car in her reserved space. She found her purse under the passenger’s seat where it had fallen and dashed into her office, stopping dead in her tracks when she saw the short, blocky man who waited for her. “Mr. Curtis! I was going to call you.”

His lips quirked. “I saved you the trouble.”

“I guess you know what I was going to tell you.”

“About the president going to Sinclair’s? Yes.”

It didn’t surprise Kathryn to find he already knew. At the last
reckoning, Bill Curtis was the richest man in the world. His money could buy information as well as merchandise.

Curtis shifted in his chair. He had one of the hard plastic ones that Kathryn never used. “Are you still satisfied that the equations are correct, Kathryn?”

“Yes, sir. I’m sure. The entire team has gone over them time and time again. We’re all in agreement.”
“Then I think it’s time to make our move.” Curtis almost purred with satisfaction. “After viewing his parents’ remains, I think Hank Lovinggood will be quite receptive to our proposition. The Lovinggoods will be re-interred on November twenty-fourth, which is a Tuesday. Set up an appointment with Hank for Wednesday or Friday. We can’t bother him on Thanksgiving Day.”

Kathryn’s eyes widened. “Me? Don’t you want to talk to him yourself?”

“Of course I do.” Curtis chuckled. “But I think it’s best for you to make the initial contact. A beautiful woman will make Lovinggood sit up and take notice of what she has to say.”

Kathryn tucked a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. “I hope he won’t think I’m some bimbo nut case.”

Curtis laughed. “If he does, I’m sure you’ll be able to change his mind.”

Kathryn hoped so. She had devoted her entire professional life to Curtis’s pet project. If they succeeded, she’d be in the history books alongside Albert Einstein. And she’d have the satisfaction of righting a dreadful wrong.

Savage Winds

Savage Winds
by R.J. Merle

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A dangerous conspiracy unfolds...
In Author R.J. Merle’s whirlwind start of the Children of the Elements series, a clumsy teenage techno-geek struggles to protect kidnapped children from a covert government organization responsible for creating their abilities to control the five elements.
A mighty wind…
Eighteen-year-old Stedford Thackett’s conspiracy theorist brother ensnares him in a real life children-as-weapons plot, while a determined scientist grooms happy-go-lucky five-year-old Darcie Lynn Carpenter to use the wind as a deadly weapon.
Out of control...
Despite the firm hand of Scientist Nora Hicks, Stedford struggles to rescue the kids and escape, even as Darcie Lynn fights to gain control of the surging power of the savage winds.
EXCERPT:
If only Stedford could spend his Saturday afternoon working on projects. Nowhere near as lucrative or fun, keeping track of Cantrell was a honking full-time job.
Up ahead, a left-to-right movement shifted among the towering tree trunks.
He choked out a loud whisper, “Cantrell?”
A coyote howled. Behind him. Too close.
A rush jolted through Stedford’s veins. He shoved the phone into his back jeans pocket and dashed into the brush.
Branches slashed and snapped.
Briars grabbed, snagged, and snatched free.
The pounding smash of his high-tops bulled through the scrub. Grayness reduced the reach of his eyesight. As dusk fell toward nightfall, he wouldn’t be able to see squat.
Zero night vision.
Zilch.
After pulling up to a halt, like a tree among many, he stood stark still.
What had he been thinking coming out here like this?
That maybe he might keep Cantrell from getting into trouble, all the while protecting his own chances to contract for a special project. Nothing wrong with looking out for both their futures.
If Uncle Merv’s contacts worked out, the brothers would be set money-wise for life.
Not a bad deal for a geeky eighteen-year-old.
Except Stedford would soon be wandering the dark.
He retrieved his phone and gauged the average power usage. Three and a quarter hours of battery life. Tops. Way before midnight, his flashlight app would die with the phone, and he would flounder in total darkness.
Ominous shivers goosed his chill bumps.
A stick snapped atop the hill.
A WORD FROM THE AUTHOR
1.What's the best and worst part of being an author?
The best part of being an author is making up stories… I cannot imagine a career more awesome than that! I get to entertain myself during the writing process, as well as entertain readers. Fun, fun, fun!
The worst part of being an author is that I am ALWAYS writing in my head. At the dinner table, while driving, and even during—gasp!—episodes of the Walking Dead. I struggle to focus on the moment at hand, and to thoroughly enjoy reality, because I’m having so much fun storytelling in my head.
2. Which book of yours is your favorite? Why?
Savage Winds, the first book in the Children of the Elements series that features the local community where I grew up, is the the whirlwind start of the series about psychically gifted children and their struggles to survive, so it has a special place on my fav list.
3. What are your favorite authors in the genre that you write?
Suzanne Collins, Ilsa J. Bick, and Veronica Roth.
4. Which of your characters is most like you?
Eighteen-year-old Stedford Thackett’s point of view weaves through the entire series—five full novels, one huge story—and no matter how bad he’s messed up, challenged, or defeated, he struggles to keep on keeping on.
AUTHOR INFORMATION AND LINKS
Author R.J. Merle stepped out of the realm of Top-Secret documents (shh, don’t tell…) to write sci-fi and paranormal fiction.
R.J. survived and escaped both the entertainment field and the government-contracting environment, craves the Walking Dead, and entertains what-if tidbits about “supposed” technological and biological advances.
No stranger to the goings on in the city of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, R.J. Merle blends a down-home flavor with a former in-the-know—hypothetically, of course—technical background to craft the twists and intrigue of Secret City Adventures.
The Kingdom Lights
The Kingdom Lights
By
Steven VS
BLURB:
In a world where cities float, airships sail the skies and mythical creatures are summoned in a pinch, Celes Vale is distinctly average. Living in the shadow of his talented cousin and his powerful aunt and uncle, Celes is resigned to a future of soot, factories and well, more soot.
But on the night of his twelfth birthday everything changes. A blinding light, a whispered voice and in an instant Celes becomes the first ordinary child in history to develop magic, sending him on a fast-track ticket to the greatest of the floating cities, Gardarel. Boasting grand, elegant buildings wrought from shimmering white stone, the entire city appears as though it has been built from light, and so it has come to be called the Kingdom Lights.
Though some welcome Celes, others want the dirt-ridden up-start off their city preferably head first. Nowhere is this clearer than in the attitude and actions of the beautiful and haughty Lady Ban and her sneering nephew, Marcus Blackwood. But Blackwood, with his gang of goons and unimaginative one-liners, is soon the least of Celes s problems.
With a little magic and a lot of detective work, Celes and his group of Scurriers and Wisps unravel the dark truth behind Lady Ban s prim, perfect smile an alliance to the villainous Wardens and the masked man who leads them. However, in his attempt to expose Lady Ban, Celes unwittingly stumbles onto an even darker conspiracy a plan that could lead to the complete destruction of Gardarel itself.
EXCERPT:
With his immaculately polished shoes, carefully preened suit and even more carefully preened moustache Jaime Milton was the last person one would expect in the sooty factory city of Midgard. His father, Lord Milton, Sr., a great wobbly man with fat flapping fingers like purple bananas was a close second.
It was a brilliant June morning and the city of Floating City of Midgard was alight with life. Jaime walked through the weathered cobblestone streets and watched as houses flung their windows and doors open, lapping in the sunlight. Jaime had not been here for two years and yet the City of Factories was exactly as he had remembered; there were rows of homes huddled together, tightly packed into the little street as high rising billows of smoke sailed into the sky. The cobblestones of rose-tinged granite underfoot were boisterous and uneven and Jaime had to be extra careful so as not to fall over as racing children zoomed past, chasing one another furiously through the street. Some were covered in soot whilst others were rosy clean but, he noted, all were breathless.
Jaime Milton couldn’t help but smile.
“What are you smirking about?” barked Lord Milton, Sr. as his son pushed him through the streets in a beautiful silvery wheelchair.
“Just thinking about the first time I came to Midgard,” replied Jaime. “It was a…”
“I didn’t ask!” announced Lord Milton, Sr., brandishing his polished walking cane. “Always answering questions I didn’t ask! And stop your smiling! There’s no reason to smile!”
