Congratulations to Jennifer Gravely. Her new adult book Drown won the reader's crown in mainstream fiction from Romcon. Here's the beginning of the book.

June 1988
Into the wide, wide world.

Like a soldier at attention, the air stood motionless, awaiting the orders of the sky.

I uncurled my legs and climbed from the black car. Out of habit I pushed my hair from my forehead, thankful I had piled the curly, blonde mess on the top of my head that morning with the expectation of much needed thunderstorms.

My hand slid down my pale green sundress as I straightened and lengthend the clingy cotton cloth to my knees. First impressions were important, and I wanted to present a picture of respectability and professionalism.

The glare from the cars parked along main street intensified the afternoon light despite the pollen that clung to their hoods. I shaded my eyes with my hand as I marched to the real estate office at the corner.

A bell tinkled against a glass door. A gray-headed lady with a round face sat behind a high counter. She closed the magazine in front of her. "Yes, dear?"

"I'm Andi Drown from Keowee High," I said. "My government teacher arranged for me to volunteer during the upcoming election."

The lady stood and I noted that the bold colors of her floral print dress accentuated her hips in a less than flattering way.

"Mr. Richland is expecting you. This way."

I followed the woman as she waddled down the hall. She entered a room to the left and flourished her hands toward two rectangular wooden tables. A pile of papers and envelopes covered one. She cleared her throat sounding like a goose.

"He'll be right here." Despite the hum from the window unit, beads of perspiration dotted her hairline.

"Thank you," I said, and watched her leave.

I inspected the room. Although blinds covered the windows, the afternoon light still checkered the opposite wall. Framed black and white pictures reminded me of all the trail hikes I took when I was younger.

"Hello, I'm Keith Richland."

Readers, I've read this book, and all I can say is, from this point on, Andi's day is worse than she ever imagined it could be. Some of her ideals will take a hit too. If you'd like to give the book a try, you can get it at

Rivers: Orders of the Sky #2

Rivers (Orders of the Sky #2)
I’ve always been fascinated by ghosts. They’re simply lost souls looking for the conclusion to their story. After years of chasing the phantom of Stone into the night, I’ve sought to live and love again in the new chapter of my life. I’m not the naïve girl I once was. I know what I want, what I need. But like the tortured spirits wandering the earth, can I find the happy ending I crave or will the apparitions of the past destroy any chance of everlasting bliss?

Excerpt from Rivers
“I told you that you shouldn’t smoke.” Drew came up behind me.

“Don’t scare me like that.” I jumped. “I almost threw the cigarette into the water thinking you were Jackson.”

“Here, let me do that for you.” He snatched the cigarette and threw it into the river.

“Hey! I was enjoying that immensely.”

“You don’t need to smoke. If you aren’t worried about your health, then be vain and worry about your looks. Smoking will age you.”

“It’s not like I chain smoke or anything,” I tossed my hair over my shoulder.

“Doesn’t matter, it’s a horrible habit to start.”

“Then what self-destructive habit should I take up?”

“Why do you need to destroy yourself?”

“Pattern of my life.” I stared out at the stars in the night.

“Are you that unhappy?”

“Right now, yes.”

He put his hand on my shoulder. “What can I do to make it better? Anything, you name it?”

“I’m not sure there’s anything you can do.”

“I can make you happy.” He twisted me around to face him. “Run away with me.”

“Be serious, Drew.” I sighed. “Come teach me to jitterbug. Dancing will clear my mind. Not to mention, if we’re caught outside together, tongues will wag.” The door creaked open across the deck behind us. “Too late.”

Drown: Orders of the Sky Part One

Drown (Orders of the Sky #1)
Booze. Brawls. Betrayal. The summer of 1988 changed everything. My parents separated, I left for college, and Stone Harrison lit my world like Apollo streaking across the sky. My obsession and desire for him overpowered all my sense and drained my sensibility as I fought to maintain control over my own destiny. Four years spent in pursuit of degrees and one certain soldier altered my future forever. Can I be the person I am destined to be with him or does a compromise of my soul spoil the perfect ending?

Excerpt from Drown

“Come with me.” I grabbed Stone’s hand and led him from the table, through the den, and up the stairs to my bedroom. I closed the door behind us. “Ta-da.” I flourished my arms wide. “Welcome to my room.”

“Nice. You’ve never shown me your room before. Anything else you want to unveil?” Mischief flashed behind his eyes.

“Maybe,” I teased, touching his arm, “but first…” I skipped to the closet and lifted a box from the top shelf. “Your Christmas present. See, I didn’t forget you.” I carried the box to the edge of the bed.

“I could never forget you.” He reached out and put both hands around my waist, pinning me to his body.

My knees made like a hot knife through butter—I melted at his touch. My arms went around his neck as his lips consumed mine. Fire jumped from his hands as they slid up to my breasts. Fighting the undeniable undulation of the tide, I pulled away and murmured, “I have to tell you something.”

“I don’t want to know.” His lips found my neck.

“But—”

“Stop talking.”

He lifted me in his arms and laid me on the bed. The box fell to the floor. “Oh, Andie—I’ve wanted you so much.” Skillfully, he began to unbutton my blouse. His powerful hands gripped my shoulders; his soft lips pressed against my skin. The blouse slid to the floor.

“I want you too.” I responded, my hands groping for his belt.

“Do you?” His kisses ceased and he jerked away. He stared at the nightstand. “Do you,” he repeated, “or do you want him?” He picked up the framed picture of Travis—arms encircling my waist, Christmas tree behind us in the background. The glass shattered as he threw it to the floor.
