Beyond the Book: Optimist or Pessimist?

Am I an optimist or a pessimist?

I’d have to say that I’m mostly an optimist. Naturally I have my down moments and hard times, everyone does, but overall for me the glass is usually half full instead of half empty. I suppose that’s because I’ve had a very blessed life beginning with my parents.

They provided a home full of safety, warmth, laughter, and love. We certainly weren’t wealthy, in fact just the opposite, but they always made sure that my sister and I had everything we needed both materially and emotionally. Oh, the memories I have! I miss them all the time, but it seems worse at Christmas than at any other time. My sister and I used to wake up in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve and run into their bedroom to get them up so we could see what gifts we’d received. I doubt they’d been in bed very long so I wonder how they faked their enthusiasm over each and every present from Santa.

I had a lovely time during my school years too. I liked school. I thought it was fun to learn new stuff, and like most kids I did enjoy socializing with my friends. I was never bullied or picked on so this too probably is a reason I’m an optimist.

My married life has been good too. My husband sometimes acts like a guy, but I’d have to say he’s considerate, loving, and kind. He gave me two wonderful sons that I’m so proud of. One of them does something with computers. He’s tried to tell me what, but I don’t get it. My other son has his own small business.

I even got to fulfill one of my lifelong dreams and become an author, and not everyone’s dream comes true.

I’ve faced some hard things as well, but somehow, I always expect that everything will work out for the best in the end so, yeah, I’m an optimist. What about you? Are you an optimist or pessimist?

Blurb:
Running away from a fiancĂ© who betrayed her, Peyton O’Malley finds employment at a beautiful mountain inn called Rest Thy Head. She didn’t expect to live in the haunted room or to fall for the inn’s owner, a fire-scarred, war veteran who uses the inn to hide away from the world. She didn’t expect her sister to show up at Rest Thy Head either, much less her formidable mother.

Now, thanks to the aid of a friendly ghost, Peyton has a shot at true love, and so does her sister Ashley, provided the guys cooperate of course!

Excerpt:

With an air of reverence, Eleanor O’Malley passed her hand across the white damask tablecloth in the box. “This is very nice, Peyton. Feel how heavy it is. It should last you a lifetime.”

Peyton opened and read the card that accompanied the gift. “Best wishes for a long and happy marriage, Henry and Anne Williams.”

Her mother flashed her best high‑wattage smile. “Can you believe it? The Williams family sent you a wedding gift! They’re one of the nicest families in town.”

Saturday Sample: Flood

Welcome to Saturday Sample. We'll continue with out excerpts from Flood. I hope you're enjoying them because I really enjoyed writing the book. Flood was reviewed by RomCon Reviews. They gave it 5 stars, and in part they said,  It's the kind of story that stays with you because of the intensity of the circumstances and you remember the characters. You can read the rest of the review here .

Blurb:
Drawn together by their love of animals, Aria De Luca and Caleb Hawkins burn for each other. They never suspected that malignant forces around them were successfully plotting Caleb’s ruin from the moment he entered her life. When the flood of a century strikes Aria’s hometown, an alienated Caleb is all that stands between her and catastrophic loss.

Last Week:
he squatted down until she was on eye level with the dog. Holding out her hand, she stared at Peaches’ feet. Eye to eye contact might make the dog feel threatened.

Peaches tensed, but when Aria made no other move, she took a tentative stop forward, then another. Her nose bumped Aria’s hand.

Aria gave the dog time to inspect her before she stood. “Let’s go home, girl. You’re gonna like Saint Francis.”

This week: I've skipped the last couple of paragraphs at the animal shelter and started Chapter 1 where we finally meet Caleb.

Caleb Hawkins fingered the dog-eared card in his pocket as the bus ate up the miles between Pine City and Fairfield. He should have bought a ticket to Greenville, the little town about twenty miles outside of Pine City where his grandmother lived. She might or might not have been glad to see him, but it was the logical place to go.

Instead, he had spent his prison traveling money going to Fairfield, the place where Peaches lived with a lady vet. It had somehow seemed important to know that things had gone well for the dog who had been as broken and injured as he had. He also wanted to thank the woman who had saved his good friend.

Beyond that, he didn’t have any specific plans other than finding a job. Maybe he’d go back to Pine City and work at the animal shelter there. He’d rather not unless he had to, though. In that place, he would still feel like a prisoner instead of a free man. It would be better to start over in a new place with no ties to his past.

Beyond the Book: Flood

Welcome to Beyond the Book. I'm still sharing excerpts from Flood so first a blurb and then the excerpt.

Excerpt:
The next day Aria parked her SUV near the front door of the Pine City Animal Shelter. She and Lila got out of the vehicle and stared at the grounds of the place they’d driven two hours on a beautiful spring day to reach.

“The shelter looks nice,” Lila said.

Aria nodded. “Yeah, that’s what I was thinking.”

The red brick building was only one story high. From the parking lot, Aria saw fenced dog runs and a small enclosure occupied by two goats. The grass had been freshly cut. All in all, it looked neat and well cared for.

She and Lila made their way to the front door, which was made of institutional-looking gray metal and went inside where a pretty receptionist greeted them with a smile.“Hi, can I help you? We have a special on kittens this week. The adoption fee is fifty percent off, and if you take two, we’ll knock another twenty five percent off. We have some little beauties in the back.”

Aria smiled. “Thanks, but we didn’t come for the kittens. I’m Aria De Luca, and ...”

“Oh, Dr. De Luca, I can’t tell you how glad I am to see you! We’ve all been so upset over Peaches and Caleb.” The woman ran around her desk and hugged both Aria and Lila. “Thank you so much for taking her.” She yelled to a man who’d just entered the lobby from the back of the room. “Ed, go get Peaches. This is Dr. De Luca.”

Ed rushed forward and shook her hand instead. “We’re so grateful to you, Dr. De Luca. It would have killed Caleb if Peaches hadn’t been saved. I’ll go get her for you.”

“Have a seat,” the receptionist urged as Ed left to get the dog. She gestured toward a collection of folding chairs to the right of the reception desk. “It’ll be a minute.”

When Aria and Lila sat down, she brought them a soft drink and took the chair beside Aria. “How did you hear about Peaches? We’ve all wondered about that ever since you called us.”

“I saw it in our local newspaper,” Aria replied as she popped the top from the soft drink can. “It just sounded like something that shouldn’t happen.”

The woman nodded and sent dark curls bouncing. “You’re right. Caleb and Peaches needed each other. Once they connected, both of them just bloomed. It would have been a shame to put her to sleep.”

Meet the Callaways

If you came for Fashionista Friday scroll on down, but why not enjoy this post first?

#1 NY Times Bestselling Author Barbara Freethy talks inspiration, romance, and research, plus tells us about how the Callaways' lives resemble her own… Check out what she has to say then Read on for more information about this blog tour and all its great prizes!

What do you love most about being an author?

Being able to tell stories! I've been a voracious reader since I was a child, and having a job that allows me to create my own worlds, characters and plots is a dream come true.

What first inspired you to write the Callaways? Where did you get the initial idea for the series?

I had wanted to write a family series for a while, and I wanted the family to be blended, just to make the dynamics a little more interesting. Jack Callaway was a widower with four small boys when he met Lynda Kane, a divorcee with two small girls. They fell in love, got married and had twins. The eight siblings are now adults and range in age between 35 and 25. I also wanted the Callaways to stand for something. So there's a family tradition of "serve and protect". All the kids are raised with the idea that they need to serve the community, to help others and to always protect the family as well as anyone else in trouble. And the Callaways always seem to find trouble, even when they're not looking for it.

Which of the Callaway siblings is the most like you? How are the two of you similar?

There is a piece of me in every character that I write, which makes it impossible for me to ever pick a favorite. I do like Emma a lot, because she's the one person in the family who has a close relationship with every sibling. She's also independent, brave and loving, which are all great traits.

Your characters all have such fascinating jobs, and, in reading your novels, it feels like I'm right there with them. How do you perform your research in order to make careers such as a smoke jumper, homicide detective, or Coast Guard rescue pilot so authentic?

I've read quite a few nonfiction books and articles written by smoke jumpers, firefighters, cops, etc. And I have a writer friend who is also a police detective, so I often ask her for help with the more technical aspects. But what's really fun about writing is discovering new things—so I love to write about people in careers I don't know that much about. In THAT SUMMER NIGHT, one of the characters is tied into the pharmaceutical industry, and I had never written a book that delved into that area. I found some of the true whistleblower stories that I read in preparation for writing that book to be fascinating. I think enjoying research is probably a big part of being a successful writer. I was born with a curiosity and an imagination. Writing is a great outlet!

The Callaways all have such beautiful, unique love stories. How do you get in the mindset for writing them? Are any of their stories inspired, at least in part, by your own real-life love story?

I have a wonderful husband who always takes credit for being my inspiration. And while that's true, as a writer I do love to explore stories beyond my own personal experience. I like to bring together couples who complement each other but also drive each other a little crazy. I think love is about finding that one person who pushes you to be better, who challenges the way you think, supports you no matter what and gives you that heady, dizzy, wonderful feeling that comes when you fall in love.

I love that your novels are not only awesome romances but also have gripping suspense as a central part of the story line. How do you start planning your novels with the romance or with the suspense—or with something else altogether?

I enjoy writing romance that brings a little extra in terms of a plot. So every Callaway novel features a great love story, a puzzling mystery, some family drama and a little nerve-tingling suspense. I don't outline in great detail, but I always have a general idea of the suspense plot points before I begin. The story takes shape and changes as I put myself into the characters' heads. That's part of the fun of writing!

Congrats on your groundbreaking, new partnership with Ingram to get the paperback editions of the Callaways out to the world. What about this opportunity has you most excited?

Since I formed my own publishing company and began independently publishing my books outside of the traditional New York publishing industry, it's been a challenge to get my books into print and into physical bookstores across the country. Late last year, I entered into a groundbreaking partnership with Ingram Publisher Services to sell and distribute my books into retail outlets like Target, Barnes and Noble, airport bookstores and supermarkets, as well as other bookstore chains. I know there are lots of readers who still prefer to read in print, and I'm thrilled that they'll now be able to read my bestselling digital series in their favorite format!

Denouement

Denouement
By
M.O. Kenyan

BLURB:

Marietta Parks believes that the only way to stop surprises from happening in life is to control your own fate. Paying attention to every detail she scripts out her own life. Leaving love, romance and children out of it. But then she meets a man who just has to be added into her story, Tobias Harden was the man of everyone’s dreams but t her he was a lovely addition to her already scripted life.

Tobias Harden was the modern day Casanova. Love was not in his vocabulary, and he was allergic to the word commitment, like poison Ivy to the bare skin. A chance kiss with Marietta Parks makes him question his single life. He was to be the best for her, and oddly enough she happens to be the only woman he wants to kiss. Tobias convinces Marietta that she needs him in her life. But after three years of marriage and life’s obstacles, he finds himself in bed with another woman. He has to convince her that he is still the man for her, especially now that she’s pregnant.

 EXCERPT:

“I thought he was the great Tobias Harden, the best sex on both sides of the pond. He can’t do a simple kiss.” Marietta pouted as she stomped towards the two actors.

“This isn’t working.” Tobias said to her as Marietta walked towards them.

“No kidding. Sarah, you look like a fish drowning in a fish bowl and Toby; you look like someone is forcing you to swallow an eel. You are actors; I don’t care if you don’t find each other desirable pretend. We pay you to pretend, you make your living pretending.”

“I find him to be very sexy.” Sarah said as she winked in Tobias’ direction.

Marietta frowned and turned to face Tobias just in time to see the same frustrated expression on his face. “What about you, do you find her sexy?”

“Just run this scene by me again.” Tobias grunted.

“The kiss has to be passionate, everyone has to shiver at how intensely passionate it is.” Marietta huffed in frustration and stepped in between them. “I think you are both trying to lead the kiss. Kiss me like you would a girl you are desperately in love with.”

“I’ve never been in love.”

“Join the club. Kiss me like you are trying to convince me that… I am your moon and stars. That is before you ditch me the next morning. You lead, I’ll follow.”

Marietta stood staring at his ‘kiss me’ lips. They were beautiful, well molded. Their lips moved in the rhythm set by the beating of their hearts. Her body shivered as his hands caressed her back. Then he shivered and that startled her so much she had to break the kiss.

Marietta stepped back and stared at him dazzled.

“So do it like that.” She took Sarah’s hand and urged her closer to Tobias, “Let him lead.”
