Saturday Sample: The Captain and the Cheerleader

Blurb
Susan English can’t stand Robin Lanford! She’s so full of herself she irritates everyone on the faculty of Fairfield High. When Robin bets Susan fifty dollars that she can’t get a date with Kurt Deveraux, the head football coach, Susan jumps at the chance to put the little heifer in her place. She had no idea that teaching Robin a lesson would irrevocably change her life, strain treasured friendships, and throw two families into chaos.

We know the Susan won her bet with Robin when Kurt asked her to go to a party with him. Unfortunately, they drank too much and ended up sleeping together which didn't please Susan at all. She begged Kurt to take her home, and in today's excerpt they've just reached Susan's house.Kurt has assured Susan that he didn't make a habit of making love to women in no condition to say no, but he already wanted her, so the tequila pushed him over the edge. He also asked if they could continue seeing each other, not for sex but because they had a good time.

Excerpt:

The bet! For a minute she had forgotten about the bet. Susan barely resisted the urge to groan out loud. Oh, why had she done it? Even though she’d rather die, she had to tell him the truth.

“Before you say anything else, there’s something I have to tell you. I’m ashamed of it, but you need to know.”

Susan broke off and clapped her hand over her mouth. “I’m going to be sick,” she cried. She ran for the bathroom as though wolves chased after her. Yeah, she’d done a lot of humiliating things during the last twelve hours, but she hadn’t thrown up in front of another person, and she wanted to keep it that way.

As the car turned into her driveway, she breathed a prayer of thanks for the early hour. Maybe her neighbors were still asleep and wouldn’t see Kurt bringing her home right after daybreak. Mrs. Meyers in particular would just love a piece of juicy gossip to chew on. That was one thing she didn’t like about Fairfield. It was so small everyone knew your business as soon as it happened.

“Thanks. I’ll see you Monday,” she mumbled. She grabbed her purse and prepared to run for the sanctuary of her home. The sooner she got rid of Kurt the better. If she never saw him again it would suit her just fine.

Susan won her bet with Robin when Kurt asked her to go to a party with him. Unfortunately, they drank too much and ended up sharing a bed. This scene is from next morning.

Susan wiped away her tears long enough to find her clothes, but the darkness made it hard to see much. She started crying again when she bumped her toe on a chair leg.

A gentle tap sounded on the door just as she zipped her jeans. “Kurt? Is everything okay?” came the whisper of their host.

Mr. Mendoza! She couldn’t face him! “Go and talk to him,” she hissed at Kurt who’d made no move toward the door. She gave him a shove, and he hurriedly buttoned his shirt and stepped outside. He didn’t close the door all the way, so she heard their conversation.

“Everything’s fine, Jose. Susan’s just embarrassed because she had too much to drink and ...and...had to stay the night. To tell you the truth, I’m a little embarrassed myself.”

Mendoza’s voice sounded kind. “Don’t be ashamed. It’s better to stay the night than to drive drunk. You had a good time, right? Take the lovely Susan home, and let her sleep it off. By tonight she’ll be her old self.”

Saturday Sample: The Captain and the Cheerleader #Women'sFiction, #mainstreamromance

We know that Susan won her bet with Robin by getting Kurt Deveraux to ask her out. Unfortunately, they also had a little too much to drink and ended up sharing a bed. This scene takes place the next morning.

Oww, her head was killing her! Susan opened her eyes, winced, and closed one of them. Where the heck was she? She couldn’t see much in the dim, early-morning light, but obviously she didn’t sleep at home last night. Her stomach lurched. Oh, where was the bathroom? She was about to throw up. Flu. This feels like the flu. Her stomach rolled over again, and she swallowed hard.

Hot. So hot. She was drenched in sweat from a furnace pressed against her back. She risked turning her head to see what she lay against and found herself face to face with Kurt Deveraux!

Saturday Sample: He's Something Else!

So Susan won her bet with Robin by getting a date with Kurt. He took her to a party, but unfortunately, both of them had a little too much to drink, and their host insisted they stay in his house. In the same bed.

EXCERPT:
Kurt slid into the bed beside her. “You’re shivering.”

“I’m freezin’. The room doesn’t have any heat.” “Scoot close to me and get warm,” he urged.

What a good idea! How nice of him to offer to keep her warm. Susan spooned against him, and after a few minutes of snuggling she felt toasty warm.

“You feel good against me,” Kurt muttered. His arm tightened around her as he buried his face in her hair. “Your hair smells like flowers.”

“Tha’s a nice compliment.” She kissed his hand by way of thanks, and Kurt kissed the side of her face.

Susan sighed. “I like that, but I want to kiss your lips.” She giggled and turned over and put her arms around him.

When Kurt hugged her back, she kissed him. He was so handsome she couldn’t help it. Kurt didn’t seem to mind. Judging by the little moan he made, he liked her kisses.

She closed her eyes against a sudden onslaught of feeling as the hugging and kissing intensified. Kurt Deveraux was something else! She made no protest when he cupped her bottom and pulled her intimately against him. At the moment, the tequila was firmly in charge.

Saturday Sample: The Captain and the Cheerleader

Last week we saw that Susan and Kurt drank too much tequila at the party, and Kurt stumbled and fell onto a bale of hay on his way out the door.

EXCERPT:

Mendoza hauled him to his feet. “I don’t think you should be driving tonight, Kurt. Maybe you had a little too much tequila.”

“I’ll drive,” Susan said with a bright smile.

“I think you don’t need to drive either,” Mendoza demurred. “Let us put you up for the night.”

Susan never even thought of calling someone to come and pick them up. She and Kurt allowed Mrs. Mendoza to lead them into her house where she showed them to a bedroom. Like Susan, she too had a hard time speaking around her giggles. “The bathroom is down the hall. If you need anything just call.”

When she left them alone, it finally occurred to Susan that she expected them to share a bed. “I can’t stand uh, stay here, Kurt. There’s only one bed.”

Saturday Sample: Here's Where She Makes Her First Mistake

Welcome to Saturday Sample. Today I'm continuing excerpts from The Captain and the Cheerleader. In last weeks excerpt we saw that Susan did get her date with Kurt, and he had arrived to take her to a party. When they arrived at the barn where the party was being held, Kurt gave their host the idea that he and Susan were in a relationship which made her angry, but she forgave him after he asked her to dance.

We’re well matched, Susan thought as they spun around the floor. He knows what he’s doing. By the time the dance ended, both of them were hot, flushed, and laughing.

Susan fanned her face with her hand. “Let’s get something to drink.”

They made their way to the end of the barn where Mendoza had set up the refreshment table. She handed Kurt a glass of punch and poured one for herself. “This is good,” she said as she drained her glass. “I can’t identify all of the ingredients, but it tastes good.”

Kurt sipped his own drink. “I think it has tequila in it, so be careful.”

Tequila? She wouldn’t contradict him, but she didn’t taste alcohol at all. Alcohol tasted bad, but this punch was so yummy she might have a second glass.

In last weeks excerpt we saw that Susan did get her date with Kurt, and he had arrived to take her to a party. When they arrived at the barn where the party was being held, Kurt gave their host the idea that he and Susan were in a relationship. We're in Susan's POV.

EXCERPT:
Kurt cleared his throat. He looked a little uneasy, as well he should. “Would you like to dance?”

Uh oh. Hard to stay mad when he’d said the magic words. “I sure would.” Susan grabbed his hand. “I love music and dancing.”

A look of approval spread across his face. “So do I.”

We’re well matched, Susan thought as they spun around the floor. He knows what he’s doing. By the time the dance ended, both of them were hot, flushed, and laughing.
