National Dog Day

Actually, National Dog Day was yesterday, but I had two guests so I decided to show you my dog today instead. His name is Rascal, and he's an Australian Cattle Dog mix. I've included another picture for you at the end of the post so you can see the spots on his ears. He's cute in the picture, and even cuter in the flesh.

My son adopted Rascal from a local shelter, but things didn't go too well. They didn't really have time for a dog, and they didn't have a yard for him to play in. As a puppy he was one big ball of energy. I took him in when it became obvious that he couldn't stay at my son's home any longer, and I haven't regretted it for one single moment.

He always greets us at the door with a big old smile, and his tail goes like a windshield wiper on high.  He naps on a doggie bed beside my chair, and at night after we have a little snack and he gets brushed, we pile up in the bed together. He dreams a lot. It's so funny to hear him try to bark while he's asleep. I've woken up more than once laughing at him.

He's a great watchdog too. One night I was keeping the little Batman in the picture while his parents played at a dance. It got late, and we were sleepy so me, Rascal, Batman, and my husband all went to bed together. I woke up to the most terrible snarls and growling that I'd ever heard. Rascal's ears were flat to his head, and every hair on him was standing on end. I don't think he liked for some stranger to creep up the stairs when everyone was asleep.

Once he recognized my son he was embarrassed about the growling, but he needn't have been. If that had been a burglar it would have been nice to have the dog warn us.

He's awfully jealous, though. If the cat tries to get a little petting, Rascal will try to come between her and me.

If you're considering getting a dog, please make sure it fits your lifestyle. It didn't work for my son. Also, think of adopting instead of buying. Thousands of animals both young and old lose their lives in shelters every year. If you adopt, you can truly save a life.

If anyone wants to tell me about their pet, I'm all ears. Leave me a comment.

Notice his cute eyebrow?

Beyond the Book: Her Kind of Man

Enjoy this excerpt from Her Kind of Man. There are betrayals, and then there are betrayals...  Katie, Kara, and Kelly are sisters, and Brandon is engaged to Kara.

As they left the theater and crossed the parking lot, Katie turned her head at the sound of a car door slamming.“Why, there’s Kelly and Brandon.”
Kara looked in the direction of Katie’s pointing finger. “Great! They can….” Her voice trailed off as Kelly moved into Brandon’s passionate embrace!
“What…?” Kara’s words choked her as Brandon buried his hands in Kelly’s hair and kissed her as if he held the world’s greatest treasure in his arms.
Katie grabbed her arm. “Come on. We’re getting to the bottom of this.”
Kara dragged her feet as Katie towed her across the parking lot. “Katie, maybe….”
“What’s wrong with you?” Katie glared over her shoulder. “Hurry up!”
Kelly and Brandon were still wrapped around each other when Katie and Kara reached them.
“Kelly! ” Katie exclaimed. “What do you think you’re doing?”
Kelly jerked away from Brandon so fast she stumbled and had to grab his arm to keep her balance. Even in the parking lot’s dim light, Kara saw her sister’s face had gone scarlet as had Brandon’s.
Kara didn’t say anything. She couldn’t.
Kelly flinched as Brandon took her hand and squeezed it. “I’m sorry, Kara. We never meant for you to find out this way.”
“What were you going to do?” Katie demanded with a wave of her hand. “Leave her at the altar?”
“No,” Kelly replied. Her eyes glittered like two burning blue coals. “We planned to tell her tomorrow night. That way she’d have the weekend off to…to…to get used to things .”
Brandon looked Kara directly in the face for the first time. “I’m sorry, Kara. You have to know I never meant to hurt you, but I can’t marry you if I’m in love with your sister.”
Kara didn’t bother to answer. She didn’t know what to say anyway.  How do you act, what do you do, when you catch the man you love kissing your sister? Her sister! Oh, how could she? This betrayal by one of her nearest and dearest cut to the bone.
She gritted her teeth to hold back her tears and hurled Brandon’s beautiful ring toward him and Kelly. He tried to catch it, but he missed, and the ring landed at his feet.
“Let’s go, Katie,” she said. She spun on her heel and stomped away with her head held high.

Here's a blurb and excerpt from Her Kind of Man.

Blurb:
Is it possible she’s finally found her kind of man?
Ross Williams has been in love with Kara Cochrane since they were kids, so when Kara’s fiancĂ© Brandon Miles cheats on her and calls off their wedding—Ross steps in to rescue the damsel in distress.
A heartbroken Kara just wants to get on with her life and hunky Ross provides her with a definite distraction—that is until she starts falling for him. Big time.
But a devastating family secret threatens to destroy everything that Kara holds dear—including her relationship with Ross.
Excerpt:
Ross had drifted off to sleep with a muscled arm thrown across Kara’s waist. She wondered if she could slide away from him without waking him up. She eased forward, but his arm tightened around her and pulled her back against him.
Near panic swept over her. She couldn’t breathe!  She had to move away from him. This time she didn’t try to ease away. She pushed his arm away, and Ross turned over to his other side and freed her.
She pulled the covers around her shoulders and wished he hadn’t objected to her putting her nightgown back on after they’d made love. “I like the way you feel against me,” he’d whispered in her ear, so of course she’d left it off.
She’d only been married a few hours and had already learned a lot about her character. Unhappily, most of it was bad. She guessed she must have a lot of her father in her. After all, what decent woman would behave the way she had with a virtual stranger? Hadn’t she only been going out with Ross for a few weeks?
Her breath came faster now. Maybe Ross thought she was a slut. She didn’t like that word, never had, but it sure did describe her behavior. It made her cringe to think of the things she had begged him to do. He’d whispered words of endearment to her and treated her so gently and tenderly. Didn’t it bother him that his wife had moaned and bucked against him like he was a bull in the barnyard?
She’d expected to find physical satisfaction in her marriage, but not the wild, dark, burning waves which had swept over her and left her exhausted, sweaty, and shaken. Yes, undoubtedly her behavior was a legacy from her unknown, deviant father, for even though she didn’t love Ross she knew one thing; the thought of a repeat performance totally took her breath away.

Beyond the Book: New Releases and Blog Tours

Blurb:

Running away from a fiancĂ© who betrayed her, Peyton O’Malley finds employment at a beautiful mountain inn called Rest Thy Head. She didn’t expect to live in the haunted room or to fall for the inn’s owner, a fire-scarred, war veteran who uses the inn to hide away from the world. She didn’t expect her sister to show up at Rest Thy Head either, much less her formidable mother.

Now, thanks to the aid of a friendly ghost, Peyton has a shot at true love, and so does her sister Ashley, provided the guys cooperate of course!

EXCERPT:

He jumped off the bed and stared into the mirror over his
dresser. Truthfully, the scars on the left side of his face had faded.
They didn’t look as red and fiery as they did right after he got his
discharge, but they’d never go away. The doctor had been clear
about that.

He stripped off his shirt and looked at the left side of his
body. His arm looked the worst. Practically the whole thing bore
the marks on the fire which had disfigured him.

He dropped his pants and looked at his leg. It didn’t look as
bad as his arm, and neither did his chest. They both looked
relatively okay. Did the scars really not matter to her? Had she only
been trying to comfort him, or did she honestly mean it?

Oh, it didn’t matter either way since Patrick had gotten
involved with her. He made a gesture of repugnance. What kind of
man would covet his brother’s girl to the point he had to clamp his
teeth together to keep from picking a fight with his brother?

He’d better stay clear of her. She looked like an angel, and he
wanted her for himself, but Patrick had seen her first. Anyway,
Patrick had a lot more to offer her than he did.

He sighed and crawled into his bed. If he stopped thinking
about Peyton lying naked beside him, he might get a little sleep.

Duets and Molly Harper

Emelle will award a signed paperback of MOLLY HARPER with bonus novella DUETS included (US ONLY) to THREE randomly drawn winners via rafflecopter during the tour. Please click the tour banner at the top to see other stops on this tour.

Movie star Molly Harper has it all, beauty, success in her field, and a loving family and marriage to actor Ben Delmonico. Norma Wintz, Molly’s mother, has it all, a lovely life style and two children who adore her, and a respite from the battle against cancer she’s been fighting. Anne Sullivan, at age fifty, is optimistic that her move to sunny Santa Barbara, California, will allow her to be closer to her youngest son and his family, and help her start her life anew after the death of her beloved husband.

But all three of these women, despite their considerable blessings, are plunged into turmoil when the most intimate of secrets that ties their lives together is revealed. At this same time, Molly Harper is confronted with the news that her marriage to actor Ben Delmonico is over. As she navigates this heartbreak and tries to keep the personal details of the drama off the front pages of the newspapers, Molly must also find a way to once and forever negotiate a way forward with her ex- lover and best friend, the volatile and compelling Cruz Morales.

How each of these characters handles the resulting upheaval in their own life, and in their relationships with one another, forms the compelling story of family, secrets and trust in the romantic women’s fiction novel, Molly Harper.

DUETS offers alternating looks into the lives of two women who would seem to have little or nothing in common.

Screen star Molly Harper has it all…beauty, success in her profession, a loving family and an upcoming marriage to actor Ben Delmonico. But as Molly is on the verge of marrying the man who has swept her off her feet, she still wonders if he hasn’t swept all her feelings for her first love away, Cruz Morales.

A handsome and cerebral college professor, Molly and Cruz have an on-again, off-again history stretching back to Molly’s early teen years. He’s not a man who a girl can ever forget about, and his feelings for Molly are equally conflicted.

Anne Sullivan, happily married for twenty-five years, is fighting to hold onto the man she loves, and hold off a confrontation that could shatter her family’s image of what they are. It involves the beautiful screen star and her mother, upper crust matron Norma Wintz, who Anne has traveled to California to meet under the most dramatic of circumstances.

Duets confronts the most intimate type of family secret that ties these two women’s lives together, just as chance events turn Molly and Anne’s worlds upside down.

Enjoy an excerpt from DUETS:

Anne Sullivan looked down at her watch.

One twenty-one p.m. Norma Wintz was twenty minutes late.

Anne leaned back against the banquette and avoided making eye contact with the hovering waitress. She folded her hands together and wondered if her face looked tight as cellophane stretched over a bowl of tuna salad. That’s how it felt.

I shouldn’t have come. She glanced around the unfamiliar restaurant. It was all glass and mirrors; chock full of shockingly glamorous Californians surely leading shockingly exciting lives. People who wouldn’t understand why a widow from Potomac, Maryland was breaking into sobs and intruding on their lunch experience.

Which is probably what I’m going to do once Norma arrives, she thought. She had tried to prepare herself for meeting the woman, face-to-face, who had adopted her baby thirty-five years ago, but Anne wasn’t sure she was going to be able to handle it as she hoped.

Calmly. Dispassionately. In control.

Anne’s chest suddenly ached, as if all the emotion she’d suppressed for decades gathered into a knot under her ribs.

I should call the number for Norma Wintz and tell her not to come. Which was a great idea, except she’d left her cell phone in the car. And if she went to her car to get it, she might not have the emotional courage to come back.

To say nothing of the fact that if she walked the two long blocks to where she was parked, there was a good chance she would miss Norma Wintz altogether, and the woman would probably think she was a crack pot.

Anne took another peek at her watch.

One twenty-two.

That’s impossible. It felt as if an hour had passed since she’d last looked at the time.

“Excuse me, are you Mrs. Sullivan?” A waiter, his eyes jade green against his tan skin, smiled at Anne. His name tag read ‘Taj’.

“Yes, I’m Anne Sullivan."

“There’s a call for you.” Taj held out a phone.

Anne pressed it against her head. “This is Anne Sullivan.”

Taj clasped his hands behind his back and smiled at her as if she was a small child on the first day of school.

“Hello, this is Norma Wintz calling,” a voice said in Anne’s ear. “I’m on my way but there was an accident and traffic is wretched. I got no answer on the number you gave me, but I wanted to let you know I wasn’t standing you up.”

“Oh, that’s no problem.” Anne nodded at Taj and repositioned the phone an inch higher on her ear. “I don’t have other plans for this afternoon.”

“Fine. I’ll be there in about ten minutes.” The phone went dead.

“Okay. Thank you!” Anne met the waiter’s eyes and wondered how Taj had known to bring it to her.

Norma Wintz must have described me to him. But what could she have said, since we’ve never met? Look for a woman who seems the sort to give up her first-born child for adoption?

Emelle Gamble was a writer at an early age, bursting with the requisite childhood stories of introspection. These evolved into bad teen poetry and worse short stories. She took her first stab at full length fiction in an adult education writing class when her kids were in bed. As M.L. Gamble, she published several romantic suspense novels with Harlequin. She contracted with Soul Mate Publishing for Secret Sister, published in the summer of 2013, and Dating Cary Grant, an April 2014 release.

Once and Forever, an anthology which includes the novella Duets, came out on November 1st. Molly Harper, a full length novel starring the characters from Duets 3 years later was released by Posh Publishing in January, 2014. Duets is now available as a standalone novella. Emelle lives in suburban Washington D.C. with her husband, ‘Phil-the-fist’, her hero of thirty years, and two orange cats, Lucy and Bella. These girls, like all good villains, have their reasons for misbehaving.

Her daughter, Olivia, and son, Allen, are happily launched on their own and contributing great things to society, their mother’s fondest wish.

Praise for SECRET SISTER…

DUETS…

"I'll admit I grabbed this book for review more because Emelle Gamble had a story in there - I've loved her significant touch brought to family relationships in a previous book of hers that I've read, and I wanted to confirm if this sort of embroiled-relationships type of tale is really her niche or not. Turns out, it is!" Zee Monodee's Author's Corner reviews MOLLY HARPER…

"MOLLY HARPER ...is the first book I've read by this author, but it won't be my last! Ms. Gamble does a wonderful job of drawing these characters and making them just leap off the page." Long and Short Reviews

"Fantasy and reality blend together in this mesmerizing tale from Emelle Gamble…It's not your typical romance, making it a breath of fresh air in a market currently inundated with new adult contemporary romances (which I do love, but need a break once in a while!). Beyond the Boook

Greetings! My name is Kara Cochrane, and I was Elaine's heroine in her Lachesis Publishing release Her Kind of Man. Before I go any further, I'd like to congratulate Elaine on her 41st wedding anniversary. She was such a beautiful bride. If you'd like to see her dress, scroll down to yesterday's post, and you can see her picture.

Have you ever felt out of place?  If so, you know how uncomfortable it makes you feel.  It’s kind of like wearing clothes that are just a shade too small.  You can’t relax no matter what you do.  I recently had just such an experience.  My sister's boyfriend decided to propose to her, so he invited her family and his own to come and watch him.  We went to some local gardens that have a pretty little waterfall.  With the waterfall in the background, we stood behind Josh-that’s his name- and waited for my sister  to arrive.  She came around the curve in the path and saw everyone.  I took a picture at that exact moment, and it’s so funny I crack up every time I look at it.

So, why did I feel out of place?  Because of what I was wearing.  I understood that it would be a casual moment, but the groom- to-be was even wearing a tux.  I had on capri pants and a button up, yellow checked blouse.  Needless to say, I hate the pictures.

That isn't the only time I've felt out of place. I'm a city girl who works at the post office, but when I started dating Ross Williams who owns a dairy farm, I was definitely out of my element.  The picture was complicated by the fact that Ross wasn't my first choice.  One of my sisters stole the man I wanted. But rest assured, things turned out for the best. I wouldn't trade Ross Williams for any man on the face of the earth.

In this excerpt, I'm having dinner at Ross’s farm.  Ross and his brother Bobby are babysitting Bobby’s son while I helps with the dishes.  Here’s a blurb and excerpt from Her Kind of Man.  You can buy the book at http://www.fictionwise.com/ebooks/b133189/Her-Kind-of-Man/Elaine-Cantrell/?si=0 or at http://lachesispublishing.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Her%5FKind%5Fof%5FMan

It's on sale at Amazon and at www.lachesispublishing.com for only .99

Excerpt:

Ross set Justin down the minute he and Bobby stepped off the porch. The child took off running while Bobby and Ross sat down on the steps to watch him play.
Bobby leaned back on his elbows and crossed his legs. “She’s nicer than she used to be.”
“Yeah, she is,” Ross replied as he patted his big collie who’d ambled over for some attention.
“In high school she didn’t have much time for anyone outside of her own circle of friends, not even a good-looking kid like you.”
“Thanks for the compliment.” Ross laughed as he gave the dog one final pat.
“Don’t let it go to your head,” Bobby retorted. “Are you serious about her, or is too soon to tell?”
“I want her, Bobby.”
Bobby sucked in his breath. “Is she serious about you?”
“What is this, twenty questions?” Ross threw a scowl Bobby’s way, but it didn’t seem to faze him.
“It’s me worrying about my kid brother.”
Ross relented. “All right, I don’t think she’s serious about me yet, but I think she will be. Right now she’s hurt over Miles and her sister, but I’ve been able to make her enjoy my company anyway, so yeah, I think things are going to work out fine.”
Bobby picked up a pebble and tossed it across the yard. “Did you sleep with her last night?”
Ross flushed and cursed himself for it. “None of your business.”
“Mom thinks you did.”
“What?”
“She talked to me before you and Kara got here.” Bobby closely appraised Ross’s face. “She smelled perfume on your shirt when she picked it up off the floor, and you overslept this morning. So, she decided you’d made love to Kara.”
“And she wanted you to talk to me,” Ross guessed with a wry grin. “Dad isn’t here to keep me on the straight and narrow, so she asked you to do it.”
Bobby laughed. “Exactly.”
“Well, you can tell her I didn’t.”
“Not yet, anyway.” Bobby jabbed Ross with his elbow. “I know you, Ross. If you want something bad enough, you keep trying until you get it. You remind me of Dad, but this time you’d better slow down and think things over.”
“Sure, I will,” Ross agreed. From long experience he knew the best way to shut Bobby up.
Bobby burst into laughter and scared a passing barn cat who hissed and skittered away.
“What’s so funny?”
“I was thinking about Kara wiping chicken poop off her high heels.”
Ross frowned. “Were you spying on us?”
“No, but when you got here, I was chasing Justin through the living room. I looked out in time to see what happened.” He grinned at Ross. “She isn’t dressed for the farm.”
“Well, no, high heels and suede pants aren’t standard farm issue,” Ross answered with a shrug, “but it’s just a meal and not a tour.”
Justin returned dragging a chicken by the neck.
Ross jumped off the step and ran to meet him.
“Is it dead?” Bobby demanded.
Ross pried the chicken from Justin’s chubby hands. After a shake, it squawked and ran away.

“I’m going to see if they’re finished with the dishes yet,” he said, leaving Bobby to tend to his rambunctious son.

Molly Harper

Please help me welcome Emelle Gamble to the blog.

1.Emelle, What do you think makes a book a page turner?

Suspense. When I, as a reader, don’t know for sure what’s going to happen next I simply can’t put a book down. I think this is the single necessary ingredient for any good book…make the reader wonder what’s going to happen, let them experience a story that, even though it is a specific genre like romance or a mystery, which surprises them because the characters are unique and not someone they’ve met before. In my book SECRET SISTER, numerous reviewers and readers said this was the most fun part, they just didn’t know what was going to happen next. This made me very happy.

2.How many WIP do you have going at the same time?

Right now I’m sitting on a big weird book I don’t know what to do with and I’m writing a new one and thinking all the time about another one, which would be the first in a series of three books.  This is the usual for me, but I hate it. I wish I could just think about one book at a time. I think I’d be more focused, although way less fun at critique group. My partners are used to me talking about five things at once, bless them.

3.Where do you get your inspiration?

I get inspired from every single word every single person I know, observe or watch on TV says. I am not kidding. Writers are the ultimate observers, but like a kingfisher we’re waiting to stab our beak into a new idea swimming by. So be very, very careful around  writers. We’re thieves…and we’ll put you in a book before you can cry out, “My jewels!"

4.Which genre appeals the most to you?

Women’s fiction and mystery are tied. I love them both.

The least?

I can’t read horror. I used to. But the real world is so scary, I just don’t want to read about more fear or suffering.

5.What's the hardest part of writing?

Not falling into the easy way out of a scene. When you’re tired and its late, sometimes its tempting to do the obvious instead of the real with a character. Because the real needs solid motivation, inevitability, uniqueness. In MOLLY HARPER, I deal with the issue of adoption, and how an adoptee feels about finding their birth mother. I really wanted to get this right for this character, and I fought a long time to get to know the women in this novel. I was not sure until the book was  done if I’d given readers an honest scene, not just a sitcom replay. Which is why I rewrite about 10 times before I’m through.

The easiest?
Getting a new idea and before word one is written down talking about it, especially to other writers. We all get giddy and excited and make suggestions and see little snippets of scenes in our heads. It’s all wonderful and fun. But then you put your fanny in the chair, in a quiet room with a blank screen.  It is no longer easy…

Thank you very much for hosting me on your blog, Elaine. I’d love to hear from your readers what they find hardest and easiest about their careers. Because then I’ll steal it and use it in a book. HA!

Spoken like a true author! Help her out, readers. Tell her about your own career. Right now, why not a blurb and an excerpt?

Praise for Secret Sister

“Along with being a very unique and captivating plot, SECRET SISTER offers a shocking turn of the paranormal kind. So if you are the type of person that wants ordinary romance in a book, you won't find that here. This is a story of friendship, family, and most of all, true love and what those things can mean.
