One Truth Revealed

One Truth Revealed
by Robena Grant

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

At thirty-five-years of age, and with pressure from her adoptive mother, Lina Bright is ten days away from undergoing Artificial Insemination in London. She doesn’t need a husband. She travels to Oldcastle to meet her biological mother, a spinster who runs a village teashop. To keep her mother’s secret, but determine her father’s identity, she creates the cover of scouting for property to start a new school.

A bachelor at forty, Drew Compton is an English Professor in Oxford. Diagnosed with “poor swimmers” his fiancĂ©e left him. He plans to live out his life alone, with his books. Disliking his mother’s secrets and controlling ways, he seldom returns to Oldcastle. But a chance meeting has him intrigued. Who is this chic Londoner?

As Lina’s plans for a school become a reality, romance blossoms, but roadblocks ensue.

Will Lina and Drew trust in each other to overcome the difficulties and create a future together?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“Thank you for breakfast.” Lina stood, shivered, already feeling the loss of his departure. She pulled on her coat and stuck her gloves in the pocket. “Lovely to talk with you. I hope to see you around the village. My shout next time.”
“Yes, well, the meeting…who knows how long that will last?” He looked worried, and a bit gloomy for a moment. “I may pop into the pub tonight, time permitting.” He smiled then, and his blue eyes twinkled. “You can buy me a beer.”
That sounded promising. Her gaze dropped to his mouth. She’d love to taste those lips. Feel the heat that emanated from him up close and personal. “I’ll look out for you.” Lina extended her hand. Better to leave this unexpected meeting casual, friendly. As much as her
body tingled, anticipating what a kiss would be like, she had to remember she was about to be impregnated with some other stranger’s sperm.
They shook hands and the same initial surge of electricity was there, but the longer they held hands a sturdy warmth took over and that sent a spiral of hungry longing through her body. Normally men in her life were there for short periods. They’d both know what they were getting into from the very beginning. Nothing serious. No surprises. Love and romance were for the
weak. It surprised her that she liked a lot of things about this man, and felt familiar with him already. She even cared about that worried look that had crossed his face again, at the mention of the meeting. She’d have made a move, even knowing it would be short-lived, if the timing had been better. She released his hand. Let him go with no promises. If they were destined to meet again, then they would.
My Review
English village life in many ways reminds me of life in any small town anywhere in the world, but this little village has a tremendous number of secrets that keep popping out. The village in question is also the setting of a previous novel One Safe Place.Many of the characters in the first book make appearances in the second book as well, but we do have a different hero and heroine. It's also possible to read One Truth Revealed without reading One Safe Place, but I bet you'd enjoy it if you read them in sequence.
I liked the heroine in this book. She's a modern woman with a mind of her own, but she still has some issues that needed resolving. The hero is, simply put, a very nice guy.
I thought the pacing was good throughout the book, and I did enjoy another glimpse into English village life. If I lived there I think I'd stop by Annie's place and grab something good to eat.
4 out of 5 stars.
Blurb:
Drawn together by their love of animals, Aria De Luca and Caleb Hawkins burn for each other. They never suspected that malignant forces around them were successfully plotting Caleb’s ruin from the moment he entered her life. When the flood of a century strikes Aria’s hometown, an alienated Caleb is all that stands between her and catastrophic loss.
Last Week:
 The next day Aria parked her SUV near the front door of the Pine City Animal Shelter. She and Lila got out of the vehicle and stared at the grounds of the place they’d driven two hours on a beautiful spring day to reach.
“The shelter looks nice,” Lila said.
Aria nodded. “Yeah, that’s what I was thinking.”
The red brick building was only one story high. From the parking lot, Aria saw fenced dog runs and a small enclosure occupied by two goats. The grass had been freshly cut. All in all, it looked neat and well cared for.
She and Lila made their way to the front door, which was made of institutional-looking gray metal and went inside where a pretty receptionist greeted them with a smile.
This Week:
“Hi, can I help you? We have a special on kittens this week. The adoption fee is fifty percent off, and if you take two, we’ll knock another twenty five percent off. We have some little beauties in the back.”
Aria smiled. “Thanks, but we didn’t come for the kittens. I’m Aria De Luca, and ...”
“Oh, Dr. De Luca, I can’t tell you how glad I am to see you! We’ve all been so upset over Peaches and Caleb.” The woman ran around her desk and hugged both Aria and Lila.
“Not the whole world,” Aria teased. “Just my little corner of it.” She took a sip of cola from the can on her desk. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t give up colas. Probably she’d get fat when she got older. “What do you think, Lila? Do we have room here for an unwanted, difficult dog?”
Lila rolled her eyes. “Sure. When do we pick her up?”
Seven Days With You
Seven Days with You
by Hugo Driscoll
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: YA Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Sean Johnson’s life as a small-town farmhand has been nothing but predictable, but when he meets Sophia Hillingdon at the local animal sanctuary, she gets him out of an eighteen-year rut, away from the mundane existence on the farm, and a grieving, drunken father.
Sophia is the first person who understands him and makes him believe that he might get out of their small town, who tells him, he has the potential to be whoever he wants to be and do whatever he wants to do.
But as their relationship unfolds, it is the most devastating of news that will change both of them forever.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

I hadn’t been anywhere, but my mind had been everywhere. That’s how I felt that summer. Or more precisely, that’s how Sophia had made me feel by the time summer neared its conclusion. The months of July and August had followed identical patterns to June in that we rarely spent a day apart. We rode with Violet across the Suffolk countryside, sometimes for miles on end, often stopping by at local pubs. Then it would be Saturday. That was the best day of all for there was no work on Sunday, which meant dancing with Tom and Jessica until our bodies could no longer stand. We drank, we laughed, and most nights after, we made love as we tip-toed up the stairs of my father’s house. I was obsessed with everything about her. Yes, Sophia Hillingdon, the girl I’d known for barely a few months was the girl I now wanted to spend the rest of my life with. And though we often drove each other crazy, we soon laughed and made up as if nothing happened. It often puzzled me as to why Sophia found our fights so amusing seconds after we were hot from the exertion of spouting obscenities at each other. Red-faced, she’d often say, “You drive me mad Sean. But, you know something? That’s just how I like it.”

A Word From the Author

The hardest part of writing is….
The hardest part of the writing process is the risk involved. You’re devoting precious hours of your life for a creation that may or may not be read by anyone other than your nearest and dearest. You can spend months- years even- writing what you think is a great novel only to have it rejected at every turn. That’s why a good writer is a risk-taker. You’re creating something that you hope will reach an audience. You have a story that may or may not be good. But you don’t know until you sacrifice things in your life for a shot at something great.  Not everyone has that in them, which is why so many brilliant writers find it hard to finish a novel, let alone build a career.

Regarding the process, the dialogue aspect has always been tricky. Sure, you can write 10 pages about a window and use a variety of superfluous adjectives, but what good fiction really comes down to is relatable dialogue. Can you express a person’s vernacular in a way that is well-written but also relatable and engaging? Can you move someone to tears from a conversation, so compelling readers feel the characters jumping off the pages? That’s what separates fiction writing from journalism and blog posts. It takes more time, and in the end, the level of detail required causes many to lose their patience.

Beyond the Book: Flood

Today let's have another excerpt from Flood. I hope you're enjoying them because I sure did enjoy writing that book. First a blurb, then that excerpt that picks up where we left off last week.

Blurb:
