Excerpt From Chapter 8: Cruel Temptation
She laid back on the ground. Stared up at the moon, still reeling from her meal. Her vampire senses on high alert. She heard the rustling leaves. The light footfalls of two feet. He had shifted. She smelled him as he neared. Heard his elevated heartbeat. He approached quietly. Her eyes drifted in his direction. He stood, illuminated by the moonlight, stripped of his clothing. He'd lost them in the transition.
She sat up abruptly, unable to look away from the deliciously naked male in front of her. Even without an erection, he was abundant and monumental, just like the rest of him
"Cass." She heard the purr in her own voice, her body betraying her. "Where are your clothes?" She knew where. Torn and laying in the woods.
"Couldn't find them."
"How convenient." She nearly growled beneath her extracted fangs. She hated how the moonlight shimmered across his muscular abs and the indentations of his hips.
Cass laughed, deep from his belly. "It wasn't intentional, Kat, if that's what you're thinking. I never worry about my clothes. It's freeing. Not like anyone is going to see me anyway. No one's out here. Didn't think to grab an extra set for you."
Kayci forced herself to stop staring. She lay back on the ground, admiring the moon once more. Desperately trying to erase his delectable image out of her mind. His quiet footfall moved toward her. He rested himself next to her, his hands behind his head. Not a care in the world, as usual.
She felt the heat radiating off his body, his warm masculinity and rugged scent much too close.
"You led them to me?"
"Figured it would get your predator instincts to kick in."
"The blood wasn't you, was it?"
"Just a scratch. No big deal."
She leaned up on her elbow and looked him over. She hadn't even noticed the broken flesh on his shoulder. Her head tilted. She examined his closed eyes, then gently licked the blood from the wound. He tasted amazing. Luscious. Savory. Just as she thought he would.
His eyes jerked open. His gaze froze her. He trembled. His manhood stiffened.
"Kat." He threatened to ravage her just with the whisper of her name.
"Sorry." She giggled. "Couldn't help it. Vampire, remember?"
"Just friends, remember?" He tilted toward himself. "You're making it difficult."
His husky voice amused her. She giggled again. Decided it was best not to tell him how delicious he tasted. She laid her head back down.
"Right. That wasn't fair."
She could feel his steely gaze.
"What isn't fair is that you still have your clothes on."
Kayci raised her brows. Her head tilted toward his predatory gaze. His wolf eyes moved over her like a savory meal.
"Easy now, wolf. This was your idea, not mine."
"Yeah, but I feel at a disadvantage. You've seen me. I haven't seen you."
"And it's going to stay that way."
"You sure?" His question came out more of a statement, his confidence in her attraction apparent.
Kayci sat up on her elbow as she met his gaze and smiled. "Is this how you get all the ladies? Bring them into the woods under the beautiful moonlight and then tempt them with your attractive naked body?"
Cass grinned. His playful, arrogant grin. "You finally admit it. You do find me attractive."
"Of course, Cass. What woman wouldn't? Look at you. It's like you've been plucked right out of an underwear ad. You're stunning, but I'm not the kind of woman who loses herself over every sexy male she encounters."
She saw the defeat in his expression. He lay back, resting his hands behind his head.
"No, you're not."
Betty Shreffler is a self-proclaimed nerd and nature enthusiast obsessed with folklore, photography, writing, reading, movies, board games, hiking, gardening and spending time with her husband and five fur babies. Not necessarily in that exact order though. During her outdoor adventures she's been face to face with an alligator, a bear and a coyote, making for some of the most memorable experiences of her life. She loves to capture and share the world's beauty through the lens of her beloved Nikon camera. Her work experience has been diverse from working as a Ranger for the National Park Service to management positions in Fortune 500 companies. She’s lived in four different states and moved homes twelve times. She received a BA in organizational management and minor in sociology, although her heart has always belonged to writing and photography. Growing up, she read romance or supernatural novels and jotted down poems and short stories to express her emotions and alleviate the characters' voices in her head. Not much has changed, only now her stories are lengthier and her characters more interesting.

EXCERPT:

Grabbing a second piece of pizza and again settling into the comfortable chair Mason answered, "I'm not bi-polar I'm just a temperamental geni—" the pizza fell from Mason's hand to the paper plate.

Nick felt movement and thought Aphrodite was going after the food again but when he moved his hand to shoo her away Mason grabbed his wrist to stop him. His eyes shifted upward to meet Mason's gaze and saw him raise a finger to his lips before he pointed to the bed. Nick looked down to see it wasn't Aphrodite moving on the bed it was Hannah's fingers and they were going for the pizza sitting on the flat of his stomach. Nick's mouth opened and Mason's grip tightened to silence him. Both of them sat frozen watching Hannah's slow hand make its way toward the cooling slice of cheese and pepperoni. In their current positions only Mason could see Hannah's face, her eyes looked a little clearer but her expression was still blank until her fingertips touched upon a slightly burnt slice of pepperoni.

Hannah snatched the pepperoni from the top of the pizza along with a gooey strand of melted mozzarella and popped it into her mouth like a thief in the night making off with someone's family jewels. A splash of tomato sauce burst off it as she chomped down nearly biting her fingertip. It stuck on the corner of her mouth with a strand of cheese clinging to it.

Even though he was slightly awestruck, Mason had enough experience with family members to anticipate Jackson's next move even before he thought of making it. He wrestled the man's arm to the mattress to keep him from jumping up and shouting out something that would startle her. "Not a sound," Mason whispered. "Don't move."

Beyond the Book: The Captain and the Cheerleader

We're now reading excerpts from The Captain and the Cheerleader. This week we'll start where we left off last week. If you'd care to read the last excerpt go to last Tuesday's Beyond the Book.

Blurb:
Susan English can’t stand Robin Lanford! She’s so full of herself she irritates everyone on the faculty of Fairfield High. When Robin bets Susan fifty dollars that she can’t get a date with Kurt Deveraux, the head football coach, Susan jumps at the chance to put the little heifer in her place. She had no idea that teaching Robin a lesson would irrevocably change her life, strain treasured friendships, and throw two families into chaos.

In last weeks' excerpt, Roby told Susan that she bet $50 that Susan can't get a date with Kurt Deveraux, the football coach. We're in Susan's POV.

Excerpt:

Around the faculty lounge a murmur of delighted, horrified voices broke out.

Susan finished her soft drink and tossed the can into a nearby recycling bin. “I could make Kurt ask me out if I wanted to.”

“Yeah? Prove it. Get him to ask you out. I’ll bet you fifty dollars you can’t do it,” Robin taunted. “All he’s interested in is football.”

Melissa Taylor, Susan’s best friend, cleared her throat. “How long would she have to get the date?”

“Two weeks ought to be enough for an old pro like Susan.” Robin snickered as her gaze swept around the lounge. “Would the rest of you like to get a piece of the action?”

All at once a carnival atmosphere permeated the room. They chose Don Brooks who taught art to keep track of the bets, and everyone hurried to put money on his or her favorite.

When A Marquis Chooses a Bride

When a Marquis Chooses a Bride
by Ella Quinn

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Thanks to their large extended family and unconventional courtship, the Worthingtons have seen their share of scandal and excitement. But nothing has prepared them for this...

The Dowager Lady Worthington isn’t quite sure what to make of country-girl Dorothea Stern. As the granddaughter of the Duke of Bristol, Dotty is schooled in the ways and means of the nobility. But her sharp wit and outspoken nature has everyone in a tizzy. Especially their cousin, Dominic, the Marquis of Merton.

Prematurely stuffy, Dom was raised by his cheerless uncle to be wary of a host of things, including innovation, waltzing, and most perilous of all: true love. Still, there’s something about Dotty, beyond her beauty, that Dom cannot resist. But the odds are against him if he intends to win her as his bride. Will he choose loyalty to his family—or risk everything for the one woman he believes is his perfect match…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Dominic, Marquis of Merton, settled into his apartment at the Pulteney Hotel. His pride still stung at having been ejected from his cousin, Matt Worthington’s, town house. Blowing a cloud was the latest thing. Not that Dom would attempt to smoke in White’s, that was not allowed, but he outranked Worthington and should have been treated as an honored guest, not summarily told to leave. Still, it was probably convenient that Dom did not actually enjoy smoking, as he was sure the Pulteney would not allow it either.
He should have gone on his Grand Tour instead of taking a bolt to Town. But his mother had received a letter informing her of his cousin’s plans to wed, and he decided starting his own nursery would be the most responsible course. After all, the succession would not look after itself, and he had a duty to his family and dependents. Perhaps he would travel after he married.
Not that Dom truly wished to leave England. He liked an ordered life and travel was sure to disrupt the structure with which he was comfortable. He did not wish to visit France at all. Any land where the inhabitants would murder their betters held little interest for him. It all came back to the proper order of things. Life was much better when everyone followed the rules and knew their places.
He reconsidered opening up Merton House for the Season, but there was really no point when his mother was not here as well. Without her to act as his hostess, he would not be able to plan any entertainments other than for his friends. The hotel would  suit for the short time he planned to spend in Town. It should not take him that long to find a wife. He was a marquis. Even without his considerable fortune, he would have been a desirable parti.
