Beyond the Book: Review of The House on Persimmon Road

Blurb:

If Justine Hale had the time, she’d get in her car and go crazy. She owns two kids, an ex-mother-in-law, and a bankrupt mother. Money scarce, she moves her entire family into a run-down, two-hundred-year-old farmhouse.

Resident ghost Lottie Roberts offers to help. She’s bossy, but she cooks. So what if she’s betwixt and between? After all, it’s her house. Before Lottie can intervene, though, Tucker Highsmith steals her thunder with his sexy grin, lazy Alabama drawl, and Mr. Fix-it talent.

Plagued with the demands of her family, Justine dismisses ghost and handyman alike. But hidden agendas prevail, and Justine is caught in the middle.

My Review:

First of all, I loved the ghost. She was enchanting with her 1800s way of looking at things. You will be so surprised when you find out what happens with her.

Second, this is a sweet romance with no explicit scenes. There was a lot of emotion, but nothing that would make you want to hide the book.

Third, it’s a well written book. When they aren’t it takes you out of the story, but this one is very well done.

Fourth, I liked all the characters. Each and every one of them were fun to know.

Fifth, this is mainly a romance, but it’s also the story of how a family overcomes hardship and makes a new life for themselves that promises to be even better than the life they had to leave behind.

If you have the time to read it I don’t think you’d be disappointed. It’s my favorite Jackie Weger book.

Saturday Sample and Weekend Writing Warriors

Welcome to Saturday Sample and Weekend Writing Warriors. Today I'm sharing an excerpt from my current work in progress. The book is titled Tarnished Silver, and I have no official blurb to share. The set up is like this.

My heroine Brittany Granger is a private investigator who has been summoned to the home of the Silver family. The Silvers operate The Silver Firm, a prestigious law practice. They are famous, rich, and some say unscrupulous. She has no idea why they want to see her.

Last Week: This is a WIP so if something grabs you that I need to change please say so.

Brittany leaned forward.  “Do they have any proof?”

He shook his head.  “Not yet.  That’s where you come in.  I want you to attend the church and see what you can find out.  Since you’re part Japanese and live in Fairfield, Bradley won’t think it’s strange if you show up on Sunday.  Find out if there’s any truth in this accusation.  Bradley is estranged from his family, but he’s still my grandson. I’ll allow no one to slander his good name if he’s innocent.”

Excerpt:

Brittany could see why Silver needed her; she was tailor made for this job.  Her American father had married a Japanese woman when he served in the military; she was the product of their marriage.

“Well, Miss Granger, will you accept this assignment?”

“Yes, sir.  I’d be glad to.”

“Excellent.”  Silver pulled a check out of his desk and handed it to Brittany.  “You’ll receive another check for the same amount on the day you deliver the information to me.”

Brittany’s eyes almost popped out of her head.  Silver had given her a more than substantial fee.  “I’ll do a good job, sir.  I appreciate the business.”

Silver rose to conclude the interview.  “I’ll look forward to hearing from you.”

He walked Brittany to the study door where the man who’d shown her in waited to escort her out of the mansion.  “Drive carefully,” the man said.  He stood on the portico and watched as she drove away.

“Will you stop laughing, it was awful.” I flopped down on my couch and buried my head in the throw pillow.

“Come on, Sadie, it can’t be that bad.” Anna had no idea.

“No, not bad at all, Ms. Murphy just found her son with his mouth on my tits but hey, it was nothing.”

“Okay so when you say on your tits, was he like smashed between them, or focusing on one at a time?”

“You are an asshole.” She was loving my humiliation, the sound of her laughter confirmed this. I know my best friend, and had the tables been turned she would have grabbed her shirt, put it on, and then managed to prance around as if nothing had happened. “You should have seen the look on her face. And then Will didn’t make things any better.”

“I’m sure he had a whole lot to say.”

“Too much.” His words were still ringing in my mind. It was almost as if his poor mother wasn’t standing at his side while he spewed things that furthered my humiliation. I don’t think I will ever be able to face her without feeling like a complete idiot.

“She is a woman, she was married to one of the Murphy men for years, I think she is completely aware of their powers.” Anna was trying to make me feel better and she was failing. “I’m sure she’s already forgotten about what she saw.”

“Sure, yeah, I’m sure.” Not even close. “I’m sure that the idea of me having premarital sex with her son in his garage is the furthest thing from her mind. Not to mention she found him sucking on my nipple.”

Anna’s laugh echoed even louder, accompanied by a snort. “Oh, so he was mid-suck?”

“I’m hanging up on you now.” I ended the call to the sounds of her uncontrollable laughter and didn’t feel any better about what had taken place only a short time ago.

The minute I looked up to find Wyatt’s mother and brother there I let my head hang low as I hurried out of the garage ignoring the protests of Wyatt. Almost tripping three times in my need to get inside quickly I practically slammed into my front door before righting myself and finally stepping inside.

I planned on hiding out here for days.

I can see it now, the next headline will read…

Our small-town hero was caught mid suck when his own mother broke through the pre-sexed haze during a steamy night in the garage.

Kill me now! I knew it was only a matter of time before my own mother got her hands on the information. Oh God, and my father…I felt sick!
