Saturday Sample: Fortuna

Welcome to Saturday Sample. Today I'll still be posting from Fortuna my romantic comedy. So far we know that Rocky has faked his death to enter the witness protection program. This scene is after Rocky's fake funeral. Aimee has gone home to Baltimore for a few weeks. She is thinking of how pleasant her life was now that all of the stress was gone when the phone rings.

Aimee Sherwood never dreamed that following her fiancĂ© into the witness protection pro-gram would land her in a haunted house in a town that’s downright creepy. She’d have laughed if she had been told the guy who lives down the road might be her soul mate, not the man whose ring she’s wearing. Life in West Virginia is nothing like life in Los Angeles, but between bean ball battles with Marilyn Monroe, remodeling a crumbling farmhouse, and starting a new online business, life in the country is anything but boring.

She looked at the pattern made by the sun as it streamed through the lace curtains in her bedroom window. So beautiful. The bedside phone, an old-fashioned landline with a rotary dial that her mother refused to get rid of, shrilled in her ear and sent her heart racing. After what happened with Rocky, loud noises scared her. It was probably Julie. Uh-oh. Hope she didn’t want to cancel. “Hello?”

“Hey, hon, it’s me.”

Rocky! Aimee gritted her teeth and clenched the receiver so tightly her knuckles turned white. “Why are you calling here? The FBI said no contact for at least six months.”

Rocky laughed in her ear. “We’re safe now, hon. Stop worrying.”

Aimee took deep breaths to calm herself and resisted the impulse to pound her pillow. “Dave told you not to come or call here. And don’t call me hon. It sounds tacky.

“Oh, Dave’s just a pessimist. We’re fine. I called because I have some news for you.”

Aimee tossed her pillow into a chair on the other side of the room so she wouldn’t pound it. They were not fine. This was exactly the kind of thing the drug cartel would be watching for. Or was it? As far as she could tell, everybody had bought the government lie hook, line, and sinker.

Change. It’s change and how well you handle it which defines a person.

Three times in my life, I have been faced with such changes. Once when I was fourteen. Again, at eighteen. And now again at twenty-eight.

Twice, she was there.

Ten years ago, I gave up everything, including her. At the time, it was the right thing to do, for both our sakes. Walking away from her isn’t what I wanted, it’s what had to be done.

Now, she’s here. People like me don’t always get second chances, this happens to be mine. That’s if she’ll have me. If she’ll accept why I left and the fact, she’ll always be second.

You see, I have a secret. It could change everything when she learns the truth. She may be the one walking away this time.

We’re about to find out.

"Don't you understand? I can't love you."Turning to her, tears fall from her eyes unrestrained.
"Of course, I understand. I see it every time she's around. When you say her name. Hear her voice. I see it in your eyes when you think of her. But I can't stop my heart from wanting what it wants. It wants you, Brannon. Always has. Always will." With her fists to her side, she walks away and I let her.

Leaona, also known as Lea, lives with her husband, cat and two dogs near Myrtle Beach. She was born and raised in WV by her parents whom she adores before attending Marshall University. A small business owner and mother of three, she enjoys Carolina Panthers and Marshall University Football, reading, writing, gardening, crafts, NASCAR, TWD, hot rods, and surf fishing.

Leaona was inspired to write while she raised her family, never dreaming one day, she would be published. While loving all genres of books, Lea writes contemporary romance stories that are not your everyday love stories. Gritty and true to life, she draws from her life and loves to create her characters.

Leaona's debut novel will release June 7, 2016. Cherry Grove is the first in The Cove Series. She’s your everyday girl and lives to connect with her fans via social media. Leaona also doesn't mind dishing about her favorite authors and their books. Beach, life, and love.

Beyond the Book: The Captain and the Cheerleader: Famous Last Words

Hello, and welcome to Beyond the Book. I've been sharing excerpts from The Captain and the Cheerleader. I'm picking up where I left off last week. Robin Lanford who's a royal pain in the butt just bet Susan English that she couldn't get a date with Kurt Deveraux, the head football coach. Some of the other faculty members also got in on the bet. Kurt showed up and Susan asked about the football game later that night. Kurt went to be with the football players before the game. He told his friend Jason that Susan had given him a compliment, and Jason reminded him that he already had a girl named Aleisha Childs. Kurt isn't sure if it's serious between them. He is about to lose his Friday night ball game when a boy interrupted him. The boy had a football play from Susan that won the game for him. Kurt is pondering that play when Alicia calls and cancels their date for that night. Kurt decides to ask Susan to go with him so he can ask her about that play, and afterward Susan calls her friend Melissa.

Susan English can’t stand Robin Lanford! She’s so full of herself she irritates everyone on the faculty of Fairfield High. When Robin bets Susan fifty dollars that she can’t get a date with Kurt Deveraux, the head football coach, Susan jumps at the chance to put the little heifer in her place. She had no idea that teaching Robin a lesson would irrevocably change her life, strain treasured friendships, and throw two families into chaos.

“Where’s he taking you?”

“Some friend of his is giving a party, and he asked me to go.”

Melissa giggled. “Have a good time, but you’d better behave yourself. I saw how you were watching him last night. I think you liked what you saw.”

Susan rolled her eyes even though Melissa couldn’t see. “Of course, I did. What’s not to like? Kurt’s absolutely gorgeous.”

“I noticed. Whew, this conversation could get out of hand. Behave now, you hear?”

“He invited me to a party for goodness sake.” Susan absently stroked Samson who had jumped up on the table. “The worst that can happen is we won’t have a good time together.”

from Surprise Deliveries by Shauna Roberts
“You’re not Jorge!” This UPS man was a stranger.
The man groaned again and eased himself up onto his elbow. He looked up at her, blinking, his eyes gazing in slightly different directions. “And you’re not Mr. Hamasaki. At least, I don’t think so.” He lay down again, closed his eyes, and took deep breaths.
