A Duke Never Forgets

Title: A Duke Never Forgets
Series: The Duke Hunters Club
Author: Bianca Blythe
Genre: Historical Romance
Release Date: July 30, 2020
Cover Design: Angela Waters
When the duke trying to evict Genevieve and her family from their cottage gets amnesia, Genevieve's mother declares that the duke and Genevieve are... married.
Sebastian, the Duke of Sandridge, has been looking forward to holidaying at his cottage in Cornwall. He is disgruntled when he discovers the cottage has been rented, and he is furious when he discovers the cottage has been rented to a woman he despises.
After Genevieve's father encountered financial difficulties, her mother took Genevieve and her younger brother to Cornwall, far from their home in the Lake District. Genevieve is determined to keep her family's new home, even after a grumpy duke demands to take the cottage away from Genevieve and her mother.
Still, when Genevieve witnesses the duke have a swimming mishap, she rescues him. When the duke wakes up, he has lost his memory. Her mother quickly announces that Genevieve is married to this man. Will the duke ever know that the woman he considers his wife is not only not his wife, but a woman he has always abhorred?

“He’s moving, Mama!” A high-pitched voice sounded beside Sebastian’s ear, and he shifted irritably.
Whoever said children sounded like angels had been mistaken.
Footsteps plodded through the room, as if a miniature elephant were roaming about it. Perhaps one of his friends had brought a foal or other animal into his house. It wouldn’t be the first time one of his friends from the now-defunct Hades’ Lair had decided to play a prank on him.
No doubt, there was no small child here either. Just one of his friends, testing his falsetto abilities.
Sebastian grudgingly opened his eyes. He blinked. Normally, when Sebastian opened his eyes, he gazed upon a particularly naughty French painting:
Venus in Repose. The white plaster before him was an imperfect replacement. Sebastian rather missed Venus’s soft, rounded curves and the manner in which her skin glowed on the silky strands of verdant grass the painter had depicted her on.
Where on earth was he?
His head ached. Pain ripped through it, accompanied by an odd pounding, as if some tin miner had crawled into his head and had decided to dig his way out, armed solely with his hammer and chisel.
Bang.
Bang.
Bang.
Well, the horrible pain rather explained things. Obviously, he’d managed to get absolutely drunk last night.
He scrunched his forehead together. Clearly, the public house needed to improve the quality of their spirits. They must have sold him firewater, at a potency that even he couldn’t be expected to drink unscathed.
He would have to speak with the manager immediately.
He nodded. If his head pounded in such a ferocious manner, then others’ heads must also pound in a ferocious manner. It was only polite to inform them of where they were going wrong.
This bed, certainly, was imperfect. It was lumpy. He wriggled in it. Yes, it was decidedly lumpy. Clearly, they hadn’t changed the feathers in years. What sort of establishment used old feathers? He shook his head. Obviously, this place lacked standards.
“Mama! Mama!” the boy called. “Genevieve!”
Sebastian frowned. Was this public house run entirely by females?
No doubt, this person’s mother was simply a servant here.
Footsteps approached him.
Sebastian didn’t bother to turn his head. Turning his head would be painful, given his outrageous hangover.
“Can you please bring me some coffee?” Sebastian asked.
“See? He’s talking,” said the high-pitched boy again.
“How marvelous,” said a female voice.
Sebastian shifted uncomfortably in the bed. Most of his friends said Sebastian was always quick to take an opportunity to brag, but he wondered whether he might have met someone even quicker to give him compliments than himself.
Talking was an activity he’d mastered by the time he was two, and he’d just been increasing the frequency of his use of multi-syllabled words since then. Perhaps Sebastian hadn’t given himself enough credit for that achievement, and he flashed a beatific smile at the maids who approached.

Annie's Choices

Annie's Choices
by Tricia McGill

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

In book 4 of the Settlers Series, we catch up with most members of the extended family from the previous three books. Annie at 18 is the eldest Carstairs girl. She has lived out at Bathurst west of the Blue Mountains, where she was born just after her Mama, Bella and Papa, Tiger settled there back in 1824. After visiting her brother Tim and his wife Jo just before Christmas 1843, Annie decides to stay in Port Philip, seeking adventure much as her brother did when he set out with Jo the previous year. Annie has inherited her mother’s independent streak, a character trait that sometimes leads her to make the wrong choices.

Jacob O’Quinn works for her brother, and the likeable young carpenter catches Annie’s eye. Jacob is quiet and reserved in his manner, having spent his life with his widowed mother. When handsome Zachary McDowell, the complete opposite to steady Jacob comes along, he sweeps Annie off her feet. Heedless of advice given by others, Annie makes a choice that turns out to be the worst she could ever make.

Restless, Annie decides to return to her home, and Jacob makes the decision to escort her. The journey back across the mountains proves to be a lot more eventful than she assumed it could ever be. The road itself may have seen improvements through the years but there will always be unexpected incidents to turn life around on its axis. A suspected murder brings the might of the law down on the shoulders of the young couple.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
The man who had held Annie’s attention took off his wide-brimmed hat and sauntered across to stand nearby as he took a swig from the water bag. “If that’s all today, boss,” he said, “I’ll get back to the workshop.” He grinned as he nodded Annie’s way. “Your brother is right, you know lass. You will ruin your lovely looks standing around in this sun.” He glanced up to where that sun glared from a cloudless sky. “If we don’t get rain soon, we’ll all melt away.”
He hesitated a moment, before strolling to the wagon and climbing up to the board. With a careless wave, he flapped the reins on the rump of the horse and clicked his tongue. As the wagon rolled away Annie’s cheeks flamed, and she knew the heat engulfing her had little to do with the sun. Why did she always have to go weak and tongue-tied in Jacob O’Quinn’s presence? Out at Bathurst across the mountains, where she had spent her entire life until travelling down here before Christmas with her Mama and Pa she was surrounded by men of all ages and not one of them had ever made her feel so unsure, and not one made her heart flutter with a feeling she could not understand.
My Review:
Annie’s Choices is an historical novel set in the early 1840’s in Australia. There were several things I liked about the book.
First, Annie didn’t behave as I thought a woman of that era would. She didn’t sit in the house wearing a corset and doing needlework. She dreamed of helping people and was adamant in making her dreams come true. She was blunt and honest and often acted on impulse, which sometimes caused problems for her. She was a well-drawn character whose path to emotional maturity I enjoyed following.
Second, the author created a vivid setting for the book. She didn’t have pages and pages of description or history, but she created a sense of place that was super well done. She chose her words wisely, and in this case less really was more.
Third, Annie was surrounded by a large and loving family. If you like stories of family life, you should enjoy this book. It’s Book 4 in a series so you can get to know the family very well. Each book is stand alone.
Fourth, the book is a clean read with no graphic sex.
And last of all, there are several surprises in the story that you probably won’t see coming.
All in all, I got immersed in the story and couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. I totally recommend it.
It’s all part of the adventure.
Corporal Katherine Ilene Greenlee had reminded herself all the way across the Atlantic. The thrill of exciting voyages to exotic locations had spurred her to volunteer for overseas duty. After fourteen days on a rolling ship with her stomach churning like the waves in a storm, she wasn’t so sure about her decision.
She stumbled onto the gangplank. The heavy duffle bag, balanced precariously on her shoulder, toppled forward and bumped the girl in front of her. One hand went instinctively to her head to keep the steel helmet from falling as she regained her equilibrium.
“Watch it,” the girl complained.
Katherine drew a deep, fortifying breath and straightened under the weight of the bag plus all her other gear. She held tighter, determined to carry it all despite her screaming muscles and roiling stomach.
If she had learned anything in this woman’s army, it was to carry her own load and not ask for help. There had been times when she hadn’t thought she was strong enough to make the grade, but stubborn determination kept her going. She had to prove to herself and everyone else that she could do it.
By rights she shouldn’t be here at all, shouldn’t even be in the Women’s Army Corps. No one knew the truth, no one except her brother, who wouldn’t dare tell, and her father, who’d been so certain she’d fail that he’d let her go without a word of objection.
For archeologist’s daughter Alexandra Parker, the Crown of Desire isn’t just a priceless and mysterious artifact—it could mean the difference between life and death.
And to find it, she must embark on a dangerous journey in the company of a man she hardly trusts. Wealthy Englishman Winn Bradford is seductive, charismatic, and the last person she should fall in love with. But Alex, too, has a secret—one that puts Winn’s safety at risk, and will force her to choose between loyalty and an extraordinary love…
Read a Blurb
Having just returned from his Uncle Edward’s funeral, Winn sat at his uncle’s desk, holding the letter and book the servant had just given him.
Dear Father Edward,
It is with great sorrow that I am writing to you. I have decided to disinherit my sons. They are greedy, shallow men, and it shames me that they bear my name.
You will only receive this letter after my death. Let me say your friendship and faith have been a light for me in the darkness of my life.
There is one treasure in my collection that has meant more to me than all the others. The Crown of Desire is an ancient Egyptian relic, supposedly cursed by the last princess to possess it. Those who claim it in greed will also be cursed. That is why I have chosen you to lead the search for the crown, which I’ve hidden away.
Your faith has marked you as a man to be trusted. There are two other books with clues. One has been sent to Professor Parker in Boston and the other to Matthew McKittrick, also of Boston. They will work with you.
Know that I have chosen you for your faith, your eternal optimism and your undying love. I trust you with my greatest treasure.
Your friend,
Lawrence
Winn picked up the book and read the baffling inscription within. Rising from the desk, he paced the study as he tried to decide what to do. Lawrence had been counting on his uncle’s help. Winn could do no less than fulfill his request. He would take his uncle’s place and lead the quest to find the crown.
Winn headed upstairs to his uncle’s bedroom to get the clothes he would need to fulfill his role as Father Edward.
Mayhem and the Marquess
This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author will be awarding a $10 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn commenter. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.
Daughter of an infamous murderer, Ivy Wollard now wields knives instead of needlepoint to survive in a society where no one wants her. When the Marquess of Blackbourne comes along and ruins her chance at a better life, she decides she’d rather have her toes eaten by eels than agree to his proposed scheme. There’s no way her surrender has anything to do with the mesmerizing angle of his jawline or the wicked twinkle in his eyes.
But Asher Blackbourne has a secret. He knows it’s just a matter of time until he goes mad and loses his illustrious title, so when Ivy falls into his path, he realizes he could use her to keep his house of cards from falling down. If every illicit touch between them doesn’t drive him mad first, that is.
Yet Ivy cannot escape her grisly legacy and the dark desires of her father’s admirers. What if violence runs through her veins, and no one who gets close is safe? Mayhem will descend as this rake finally falls for the enigmatic woman who might be just his brand of poison…Er, cure, of course.
Read an Excerpt
Blackbourne came towards the clawfoot tub, running a finger along the porcelain edge.
Ivy shrank back instinctively into the steam.
He chuckled. “Don’t worry, love. I won’t bite,” he drawled, and then paused. “Yet.”
She inhaled as his eyes flashed promises of things she wasn’t sure she understood.
“Your bathwater is quite thoroughly unrevealing with all those suds. What a pity.” He sighed, pulling the nearby chair closer to the tub and lowering himself down into it. “Will you wash your hair for me?”
Ivy blinked “Right now?” she choked, reaching up to pat her hair, which she’d styled in a high chignon.
He nodded, his posture relaxed, although Ivy knew this to be deceptive. He was waiting to hear her answer with taut focus. When she didn’t move a muscle, Blackbourne interrupted her tumultuous thoughts with a soft suggestion. “Let me help you.”
The words reached out to her with tendrils that wrapped her consciousness in a sensual fog, causing the hair on her nape to rise. This was not done, she knew. A proper lady would never allow a gentleman to touch her hair, much less while she bathed. But what about any of their arrangement was proper in the first place? Who would even know?
Besides him.
So she reached up slowly so as not to disturb the water covering her chest and drew the stickpin from her hair, letting its length fall in a heavy coil down her back.
His sharp intake of breath echoed in the tiled chamber.
Was that a good thing? Ivy’s body trembled as she watched him rise and come towards her through the steam…
All You Need is a Duke
When Margaret Carberry’s mother drags her upstairs at a ball, Margaret does not expect her mother to tie her to the bed and lock the door. Unfortunately, Margaret’s mother has taken it upon herself to declare Margaret compromised—whether or not Margaret wants to resort to such tactics to snare a husband.
Jasper Tierney, the Duke of Jevington, is surprised to encounter a half-clothed woman sprawled upon his bed. He is even more shocked to discover her identity. Margaret Carberry is renowned as an incorrigible wallflower, not a seductress, no matter how appealing her bare flesh is against his bedding. When Margaret declares she won’t go along with her mother’s scheme and will find a husband on her own, Jasper vows to assist her, lest Margaret’s mother concoct another method to arrange a compromising situation. Jasper is certain of one thing: he has no desire to marry.
As Jasper works to match Margaret to one of his fellow dukes, the prospect of a forced marriage with her lacks its earlier loathsomeness. Perhaps he missed his chance for true bliss.
Perhaps the duke was accustomed to women being astounded in his presence, though it wasn’t his exquisite symmetrical features, his tallness, or his manner of fitting his attire with a skill normally reserved for mannequins that left her on edge: it was his words.
“I said I would help you,” he said gently, as if he were a tutor and she were a comprehension-challenged pupil.
She nodded.
“And then I said I would find you a duke.”
Her eyes widened. The man had said the word again.
He nodded, evidently pleased with himself. “A duke.”
She stared at him.
But he’d clearly said duke. Multiple times. She’d thought her heart had pitter-pattered when she’d seen him before, but now it careened.
Perhaps he was teasing her.
And yet his eyes seemed kind, and she doubted he had any acquaintances hiding behind the chaise whom he wanted to make laugh.
Suddenly the room seemed devoid of air, despite the generous sizes of the windows and ample square footage, and she swallowed hard.
The man was so close.
Close enough to sweep her in his arms.
Close enough for their lips to meet.
Close enough…
She stepped away hastily, bumping into a sideboard. The wooden edge poked her leg, and an oriental vase wobbled precariously, sending flower petals tumbling down.
He grasped her elbow with one hand, and energy thrummed through her body.
“I-I don’t understand,” she stammered finally, not wanting to glance at her grandmother, lest even her expression be filled with mirth.
Normally, Margaret understood things.
It was one of her good qualities.
One of her few good qualities.
“Well, I thought your mother would prefer a duke. Unless, you don’t like dukes?”
“I don’t abhor dukes.”
St. Just knows his mind and his duty, and he loves a challenge. Helping a fair lady make her farewells to hoodlums suits his talents well. Within the hour he has Georgie, her lady’s maid—and her little dog too—sailing for his castle in Cornwall. Meanwhile, the lady’s entire family, her kidnappers, and her scheming intended are in pursuit. But as he and the indomitable Georgie grow closer, he begins to suspect that together they will prove a match for them all . . .
St. Just’s long silence suddenly struck her. He’d asked her a question ages ago. What was it? “Oh, no, my lord. I have never in my life seen such an awe-inspiring sight.”
A sharp gust of wind made her stagger into her companion’s side. The jolt was like a lightning strike, sizzling through her veins from her hair—which might indeed be standing on end—to her curling toes. She could do nothing but cling to him as the ship dipped and a splash of spray cascaded over the bow rail, spattering them with cold seawater. “Let’s get you back to the safety of the mast. The wind’s picked up rather quickly, which means the waves will likely do the same. We wouldn’t want you drenched and catching a chill.” He grinned and reversed their course. “Not when you’ve just begun to enjoy sailing.”
“Of course.” Swiftly, she stepped away from him and moved toward the towering timber in the center of the ship “Come, Lulu.”
The ship dipped violently forward, and a giant wave of water cascaded over the bow.
Georgie shrieked and grabbed St. Just’s arms again.
“I’ve got you.” He grabbed her about the waist, his strong arms anchoring her to his rock-hard chest, and she relaxed against him.
Frantic barking drew her attention to Lulu, drenched by the huge wave.
“Oh, Lulu! Come here.” Georgie bent down and beckoned to the dog.
The ship pitched forward again. Georgie lost her footing on the slippery planks and tumbled to the deck.
“Careful, my lady.” With St. Just’s help, she staggered to her feet, righting herself just as Lulu slid forward and disappeared over the side into the merciless waters of the Channel.
