BLURB:

Therin Athan faces a choice…eternal salvation or eternal damnation.

After centuries of pining away for a love never realized, Therin's last assignment as a Cupid depends on helping the lonely, shy Lucy Carlton.  The mission's success or failure will determine where he is transferred.  He can study the heavens or be condemned to hell.

Lucy Carlton spent her life searching the stars for answers, but finds them in the form of a gorgeous man who comes in her dreams.  Therin shows her the joys of physical pleasure and encourages her to try to find love.  She wakes with a new found confidence, but soon her timid nature takes over and she retreats back to the comfort of her home…alone.

With only a week to decide his fate, Therin breaks every rule.  What starts as a job to save himself, becomes a love that can never be…except maybe in eternity

EXCERPT:

"Why stars?" He retrieved the bottle and poured her some more, staying quiet hoping she would continue to reveal bits of herself.

"Stars are endless, they are sort of like looking at hope."

He stared at her profile.

She let out another laugh, this one heartier than the first. "Right there." She motioned up at the night sky.

"Where?" He leaned over.

"Right there." She put out her finger and leaned toward him as if to show him her perspective.

He moved the basket to the side and slid over, sighing when he finally focused on what she pointed out. "Pisces." The two fish represented Aphrodite and Eros. A few wisps of her hair tickled his face but he didn't move them away.

"Is she your mother?  Are the stories true?"

"Nothing is ever exactly as it seems." He repeated his words from earlier, but appreciated the way she was fluent not only in the stars but the mythology. "Just like Pegasus, there is more than one Cupid. He was the just the most famous."

"Are you a God?" She kept her eyes on the night sky.

"I am what they call an immortal. I work for the Gods." He lowered his voice as to not scare her.

She finished off her wine. "Why is this your last assignment?  Did I break you or something?"

He put his hand over hers. "I was broken way before you were even born."
"
What broke you?"

"Every being has wants and needs." He paused. "Sometimes when they go unfulfilled it's hard to keep going."

She looked at her lap. "What happens after you deal with me?"

"It depends on how successful I am." He balled his other hand in a fist. This was not something to put on a human.

"Do you mean how successful I am?"

From one day in her apartment he knew she was not only intelligent, but also insightful. "Something like that."

"What happens if I don't end up with him?" She stared into the empty glass.

"There are things only Gods know. I need to guide you."

She shook her head. "I don't want to think of you down in Hades."

He almost smiled. "Something like that."

"Must be frightening for you," she whispered.

"What do you mean?"

"If you are immortal then you are never really know how or when it will end." She turned her hand over. "Infinite can be as terrifying as finite."

AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Kim Carmichael began writing eight years ago when her need for graphic sex scenes and love of happy endings inspired her to create her own.  She has a weakness for bad boys and techno geeks, and married her own computer whiz after he proved he could keep her all her gadgets running.  When not writing, she can usually be found slathered in sunscreen trolling Los Angeles and helping top doctors build their practices.

Like the Paranormal? Check It Out.

Please help me welcome Nell Dixon, my guest blogger for today. Nell, take it away.

Thank you so much for inviting me to your blog to talk about my latest release from Astraea Press. Lights, Camera, Poltergeist! will be my 21st title release! So a kind of coming of age.

For those who haven’t met me before my name is Nell Dixon and I’m a UK author based in the Black Country, a small region which is more or less dab bang in the middle of the UK. I write for a number of publishers in the US and the UK and have been fortunate enough to twice win the UK’s prestigious romance prize for category length fiction. I’m the only person to have won twice.

Lights, Camera, Poltergeist! Is set in a fictional Scottish town called Fingelly. I had lots of fun researching for a name that would sound authentic and I uncovered lots of fun facts about Scottish place names. Here are a few!

Aberdeen - Granite City due to the number of buildings built from local granite or Silver City with the Golden Sands. In Ian Rankin's Rebus novel "Black and Blue" Aberdeen is referred to as "The Furry Boots Toon" Why? Because when you get there, all the Aberdonians ask you "Furry boots are you from?"

Galashiels - Truncated often to just Gala. Understandably, Gala residents aren’t keen on their nickname of 'pailmerks'. It is said they got this name from days gone by when there were no toilets in Gala as we know them today - so inhabitants sat on pails - and if they sat too long, their rear end would be 'marked' by the rim of the pail! This doesn’t explain what inhabitants of other towns did to avoid this!

Tranent, East Lothian, where the residents at one time are said to have truly believed that they would win any physical altercation with the surrounding villages, so they were self-proclaimed as the Belters - in other words they could "belt the living daylight out of their adversaries"!

To read more of these go to http://www.rampantscotland.com/know/blknow_nicknames.htm On that note Here’s the blurb for Lights, Camera, Poltergeist!

Things don’t just go bump in the night, sometimes they throw tea cups! As the presenter for Ghost Uk, the leading TV show investigating paranormal activity, Fae thought she’d seen it all. Until a Valentine’s Eve live show from Scotland’s Fingelly Manor upsets both her preconceptions and her love life.

And a wee taster! John watched as she headed out of the room. Lately, it seemed he couldn't say or do the right thing, where Fae was concerned. He wasn't looking forward to the evening ahead of them any more than she was. Until Tim had sprung his hare-brained scheme for a live Valentine's show on them, John had planned a very different kind of evening with Fae. Tonight he should have been enjoying an intimate dinner with her at their favourite restaurant, hoping he could put some romance back into their relationship. Instead they were to freeze to death in a cavernous and dingy dining room with the rest of the production team. Worse still, that lecherous creep, Giles, would be ogling Fae at every opportunity.

The room seemed to be growing colder by the minute. The elderly woman finished her ministrations by the fireplace, and a dull orange glow filled the hearth, accompanied by lots of smoke. The tech staff had gone from the corridor as John crossed the room to stand closer to the meagre fire. No doubt they had slipped off to the kitchen in an attempt to scrounge up more mugs of tea. He was tempted to go join them, but he really wanted to finish setting up the lighting and placing the motion sensors first.

A growing sense of unease forced its way into his senses, raising goosebumps on his skin. John lifted his head, certain he was no longer alone in the room. At first he couldn't see the cause of the sensation. A change in the shadows in the far corner of the room, next to a dusty case containing a long-dead fox, caught his gaze. A soft snicking sound followed, like a door being closed quietly. He blinked, unsure if he had imagined the momentary distortion in the oak panelling. © Nell Dixon 2013

Beyond the Book: Word Cloud

Welcome to another edition of Beyond the Book, Elaine's way of keeping you informed about the characters you've known and loved. My name is Elizabeth Lane. I was Elaine's heroine in Return Engagement. I like playing with computers, so I made a word cloud relating to Return Engagement. Do you like it? I think it's as cute as can be. Remember the time Richard sent me personalized balloons? My what a day that was! If anything piques your curiousity, you can buy the book at http://www.whiskeycreekpress.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=819 and at most other retail outlets.

Six Sentence Sunday: Crime Boss

Welcome to Six Sentence Sunday.  My excerpt today is from Never Trust a Pretty Wolf.  In this excerpt my hero Andy ponders why crime boss Joseph Wolf helped his daughter in law escape her marriage to his son.  You can read more about William Wolf in yesterday's post.  Never Trust a Pretty Wolf is available at http://www.astraeapress.com/#!/~/product/id=11343720 and most retail outlets.

If William was anything at all like the law enforcement community believed him to be, he was a dangerous man. A man even his father would not want to alienate. So why would Joseph have helped Liesel? She was only a daughter-in-law.

An obvious answer occurred to him. Maybe Liesel had blackmailed Joseph into helping her with the divorce

This Guy is Really, Really Bad.

One of my scariest villains is the bad guy in my romantic suspense novel Never Trust a Pretty Wolf.  In this excerpt, one of William's men approach him with news of his ex-wife.

Carl reluctantly approached the pool area. He saw William lying in a lounge chair beside a tall, red‑haired woman whose bikini barely covered the essentials. Occasionally, William’s fingers
ran up her arm and across her chest toward her breasts. At the last minute, he’d draw his hand back and grin at the guards lounging around the pool area.

Nobody seemed to mind. In fact, most of the guards seemed happy to watch the show. He’d give anything in the world if Joseph hadn’t assigned him to William with instructions to monitor his son’s activities and report on them. Loyalty to Joseph ensured that he’d do his job to the best of his ability, though. He cleared his throat as he approached William. “Sir, I have some interesting news for you.”

William pushed his sunglasses on top of his head. “Okay, shoot.”

“Maybe we could talk privately.”

William slapped the woman on the leg. “Scoot.”

The woman meandered toward the pool house and William said, “Talk.”

“One of our Atlanta contacts faxed me a copy of an APB that was issued in South Carolina yesterday. The authorities are looking for Liesel Wolf in connection with a murder.”

“Well, how about that?” William laughed, startling Carl whose skin started to crawl. “Maybe old Liesel picked up a few tricks while we were married. Tell you what, Carl, my wife and I have some unfinished business to take care of. Find her for me.”

Never Trust a Pretty Wolf is available at http://www.astraeapress.com/#!/~/product/id=11343720 and most other retail outlets.

Beyond the Book: Happy New Year

Happy New Year from Elaine and all of her characters.  Welcome to this New Year’s Day edition of Beyond the Book.  Thanks so much for stopping by.  I’m Elizabeth Lane Lovinggood.  I was Elaine’s heroine in Return Engagement.  I wanted to come today to tell you about Elaine’s new contract.  Whiskey Creek Press wants to publish the sequel to Return Engagement, and guess who the hero will be?  No, not my Richard even though he’s still my own personal hero.  The hero is our son, Richard Henry Lovinggood III, Hank to his family and friends.

I wish I had words to tell you how wonderful that boy is.  I know every mother thinks her son is special, but Hank really is.  If not for him, Richard and I wouldn’t be here today.  Not that he knows this, mind you.  He can’t remember it.  Why not?  Sorry, you’ll have to wait for the book.

Are you eating black-eyed peas and collard greens today?  In my part of the country, that’s supposed to bring you good luck.  Not everybody knows how to cook collards, though.  Here’s the way I do them.  Even though I am a successful actress, I love to cook.  Be sure to wash the collards real well before you start.  They’re bad to collect grit.

Collard Greens

½ pound smoked meat (ham hock, neck bones, etc.)
Salt, pepper, and garlic to taste, but don’t skimp
hot sauce to taste
1 bunch collards
3 quarts water
Boil the meat, salt, pepper, garlic, and pepper sauce for about 30 minutes. Remove the center stems from the collards and chop the rest.  Cook for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Be sure there’s plenty of liquid on the collards.
This is really good with Hopping John if you don’t want regular black-eyed peas.  It took me a long time to convince Richard to eat collards, but he does it now without a fuss.  He likes spicy food, so for him I usually put a lot of red pepper sauce.
