Do You Believe in Mermaids?

Welcome to Nadia Scrivea's blog tour. Nadia, we're glad to have you.  Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m a peculiar Canadian gal, with a mix of deplorable and endearing qualities. I’m aggressive, greedy, and brutally honest, in addition to being a devoted and loyal friend, curious, and brave. So if we factor in the positives and negatives I probably end up working out to be completely normal and average.

2. I had professor at school who described most people as neurotically normal which I’m sure fits me!  Which of your books is your favorite?  Why?

This feels rather like picking a favorite child, but I would have to say Fathoms of Forgiveness. The process of writing the second novel in my series was emotionally taxing—I might say even maddening. FoF hit too close to home in many ways, and it was extremely upsetting to write. I felt like it was killing me; I needed to take frequent breaks from writing to drive around the city and clear my head. However, the response from fans has been astounding, and I have heard from many people that it became their new favorite book. That alone made it worth every ounce of pain I experienced during its creation.

3. I don’t especially like that question when people ask it of me.  I can’t really pick. What should readers expect when they pick up your book?

I would prefer for readers to have no expectations and allow themselves to be surprised and swept away. If I must list expectations, I would say that they will experience a full range of emotions. They will often grow to hate the characters they love the most, for even the best of people make mistakes and do horrible things. Sometimes they will grow to love the characters they once hated in unforeseen redemption. Ultimately, they should expect to feel.

4. What has been your greatest challenge as a writer?

If I really consider this question I realize that most of my challenges have been exterior influences. The bane of my whole existence was being able to afford the time to work on a book. I always knew I would want to be a full-time writer, but I had to be extremely creative and make a few great sacrifices in order to be able to manage it less than a year after graduating. In fact, sometimes I wonder if I should have gone to school at all. I incurred massive debt and wasted five years of my life that could have been spent writing.
I love learning, and I’m not downplaying the importance of education, but having had the experience, I feel that I have learned more about writing from endless practice and personal study. I wonder what my life would have been like if I had been brave enough to begin following my passions earlier, but I suppose that I wouldn’t have had as many adventures and awful situations to inspire me. I have learned that sometimes you have to fight against the world to pursue your personal path.

Super answer!  And now let’s read some blurbs and excerpts. The first one is from Drowning Mermaids.
BLURB:
Deep under Arctic waters lies an ice kingdom carved into a glacier. Those who dwell within it possess magnificent biological secrets. Due to the dangers of impending war, the Princess of Adlivun is forced to flee her undersea utopia and regroup with her sisters in Alaska.

Captain Trevain Murphy is a successful king crab fisherman who has spent his life building his empire above the sea, and knows nothing of the empire beneath it. When he meets a mysterious dancer whose father has recently died, he extends kindness towards her, unaware of her unique genetics and royal lineage.

Trevain's attraction to the enigmatic Aazuria Vellamo will involve him in dangerous designs that will forever change his life, and his perspective on himself and his world. He embarks on perilous journeys in which he will need to release all of his insecurities and inhibitions in order to survive.

excerpt:
When she could no longer rest her face on the frozen carpet, she forced herself to cease her sniveling and straighten into seiza. She was still on her knees, but not in the same pathetic way as before. She was on her knees not as a servant, but as an equal. Not as a beggar, but as a warrior. Aazuria closed her eyes. She imagined her organs untangling themselves from their knotted, jumbled mess and aligning themselves properly. She imagined the natural ease with which her breath and energy traveled through her body; all the channels which had been blocked with the rocks and lumber of anguish and the caulk of vitriol opened one by one as she willed it. She sat for hours more in long solitude and reflection, until she felt healed.

She opened her eyes and saw the small sheet of ice on the carpet that had been created by her tears. She smiled at it, knowing that she had cried all the weakness and negativity out of her system. She looked up at her father’s body, and she smiled at him too.

This blurb is from Fathoms of Forgiveness.
Blurb:
There is no divorce in the undersea kingdom of Adlivun. Marriage is a bond that lasts until death—even if death comes in several centuries, and in that time your spouse happens to become your sworn enemy. This is the conflict that General Visola Ramaris faces when she learns that the mighty Vachlan is behind the attacks on her kingdom. She has sworn to protect Adlivun with her life, but long ago, she also swore to love and honor her husband...
Visola must choose whether she will destroy Vachlan once and for all, or attempt the hardest thing conceivable: communication. After two hundred years of desertion, she has no faith in their feeble bond and knows she can never forgive him. When he threatens the person dearest to her, she must take action. Confronting Vachlan on enemy territory would be nothing short of suicide. She knows that if she falls into his custody, the deranged man would relish breaking her down and making her lose her sanity.
Princess Aazuria forbids Visola from taking matters into her own hands; she will do anything it takes to protect her friend from the man who wants to crush her. Alas, Visola is a crazy, uncontrollable warrior woman with the blood of Vikings in her veins. Why would she ever consider doing the safe and predictable thing?

Excerpt:

Meeting the scrutiny of his steel-grey eyes made her feel sweltering hot and bitterly cold at the same time. It was a thousandfold more difficult to tolerate the intensity of his gaze when it was penetrating her skull from the front instead of the rear. She felt like her eyes did not offer as much protection as the dense bones of her skull had. He was already piercing beyond her eyeballs to knead her memories with his knuckles, and to dissect her thoughts with his fingernails. She tried to get past the pain in her skull to objectively observe her enemy. His jet-black hair was pulled back into its classic ponytail at the nape of his neck. Had he not changed his hairstyle in all this time? Had he not grown hideous with all the horrible deeds he had done?

It did not seem possible, but he looked exactly the same. Except for his eyes; those vicious grey-blue eyes would have terrified any lesser woman to tears. Visola could not help seeing the blatant resemblance to her daughter in his face. Although Alcyone’s coloring was closer to Visola’s own, there was still so much of Vachlan in her. Seeing this; seeing the glimpses of Alcyone in this man who was little more than a stranger, drew her spirit to him involuntarily. Visola realized that she had to face the terrible truth.

She was not strong enough to face the father of her child.

Six Sentence Sunday

In this excerpt, my heroine is reflecting on a wrong she thinks her husband has done to her. Her Kind of Man is available at http://www.fictionwise.com/ebooks/b133189/Her-Kind-of-Man/Elaine-Cantrell/?si=0  or at http://www.lachesispublishing.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Her%5FKind%5Fof%5FMan

blurb:
Is it possible she’s finally found Her Kind of Man?

Ross Williams has been in love with Kara Cochrane since they were kids so when Kara's fiancĂ© Brandon Miles cheats on her and calls off their wedding—Ross steps in to rescue the damsel in distress.

A heartbroken Kara just wants to get on with her life and hunky Ross provides her with a definite distraction—that is until she starts falling for him. Big time.

But a devastating family secret threatens to destroy everything that Kara holds dear—including her relationship with Ross.

Sentences:
“Where did you go last night?” Ross asked.

Kara sensed raw emotion swirling underneath his quiet voice, but he didn’t deserve consideration from her. “It’s none of your concern,” she answered, making her voice as cold and flat as possible. She bit the inside of her lip to hold back her tears. He looked so familiar, so dear, but he’d had an affair with another woman. As far as she was concerned, he had forfeited his rights as a husband.

Sweet Saturday Sample: Never Trust a Pretty Wolf

In this excerpt, Liesel my heroine is on the run, and my hero Andy has chased her down at the airport.

Liesel critically stared at herself in the mirror. She couldn’t

bring herself to cut her hair, so she had had the salon lighten it. It

now looked a bright shade of red-gold. Her brown contacts

disguised her green eyes, and she wore a formal, very expensive

suit complete with a nice string of pearls. Her appearance now

matched the picture on her fake ID documents. Thank goodness

she had hidden them in the Mustang. She must have had a

premonition or something.

After parking in the airport’s long-term parking area, she

made her way to the terminal. Since the police knew about the

body in the cave, Liesel Wolf probably couldn’t buy a ticket, but

Leslie Cochran could. She bought a ticket to Montreal, inwardly

wincing about paying such an exorbitant price, then decided to get

something to eat. Her plane didn’t leave for two hours, and she was

starving to death. No wonder. She hadn’ eaten in some time.

She got in line at one of the eateries in the airport and

bought herself a cheeseburger and a drink After she finished her

meal, she went looking for something to read. As she strolled down

the concourse, she found a bookstore selling the latest Elaine

Cantrell novel. The clerk had just taken her money when someone

tapped her shoulder.

She turned around, her heart in her throat.
Stay impassive, she reminded herself. Seconds later she hoped she wouldn’t fall to

the floor in a dead faint because Andy Bryce stood there staring at

her. “Yes?” she said, arching her eyebrows inquiringly.

“It was surprisingly easy to find you.”

“I’m sorry, but you seem to have made a mistake. My name

is Leslie Cochran.”

For a moment she saw doubt in his eyes, but only for a

moment. “Your disguise is very good. You almost got away with it.

Now come with me quietly, or I’ll handcuff you and drag you out

of here.”

Liesel did neither. Instead, she screamed at the top of her

lungs. “Help! Help me, someone! Help!”

Fashionista Friday: They're Having a Sale

One of my favorite local department stores is Belk's. They have a nice selection of reasonably priced merchandise, and in the small town where I live, they're my favorite option. Best of all, they're having a sale. Here are three sale tops that I like because I think they'd be very versatile.

Top 1 is this tuquoise beauty from Jones New York.  I love turquoise.  The embroidered neck and drawstring at the waist are really pretty.  Buy it at

I'm also fond of this black, smocked waist, sheer beauty from New Directions.  It's on sale for $29.99 at

My last selection is this yummy orange cheetah print from Rafaella.  I like the raglan sleeves and scoop neck.  Buy it for $39.99 at

Wind Over Marshdale

Hey guys, take a look at this.  Tracy Krauss has a winner.

Marshdale. Just a small farming community where nothing special happens.  A perfect place to start over… or get lost. There is definitely more to this prairie town than meets the eye. Once the meeting place of aboriginal tribes for miles around, some say the land itself was cursed because of the people’s sin. But its history goes farther back than even indigenous oral history can trace and there is still a direct descendant who has been handed the truth, like it or not. Exactly what ties does the land have to the medicine of the ancients? Is it cursed, or is it all superstition?

Wind Over Marshdale is the story of the struggles within a small prairie town when hidden evil and ancient medicine resurface. Caught in the crossfire, new teacher Rachel Bosworth finds herself in love with two men at once. First, there is Thomas Lone Wolf, a Cree man whose blood lines run back to the days of ancient medicine but who has chosen to live as a Christian and faces prejudice from every side as he tries to expose the truth. Then there is Con McKinley, local farmer who has to face some demons of his own. Add to the mix a wayward minister seeking anonymity in the obscurity of the town; eccentric twin sisters – one heavily involved in the occult and the other a fundamentalist zealot; and a host of other ‘characters’ whose lives weave together unexpectedly for the final climax. This suspenseful story is one of human frailty - prejudice, cowardice, jealousy, and greed – magnified by powerful spiritual forces that have remained hidden for centuries, only to be broken in triumph by grace.

Beyond the Book: Ross and Kara on Vacation

Hello from beautiful Garden City Beach in sunny South Carolina.  My name is Ross Williams.  Elaine told my and my wife’s story in her book Her Kind of Man.  Since I live in the Midwest, I’ve never seen the ocean, and neither has my family, including my wife Kara.  So, we decided to take a trip to the beach.  Garden City is part of the South Carolina Grand Strand, a crescent shaped strip along the Atlantic just filled with entertainments and shopping of all kinds.  Of course for us the biggest attraction is the ocean.  It’s vast, powerful, and thrilling.  Here’s a picture of Kara pulling Justin through the surf.  You remember Justin, right?  He’s my nephew, the one who turned over the wedding cake at my and Kara’s wedding.  Adorable, isn’t she?

Besides the ocean, we’ve enjoyed the Pier.  Yeah, they capitalize it.  It’s a fun place to visit.  My brother Bobby and I reverted to our childhoods and spent an afternoon playing games in the arcade.  Lots of people fish from the Pier.  One guy brought in a whopper fish, but I don’t know what kind it was.  I’ve never been much of a fisherman, but I enjoyed trying my hand at it.  Kara caught a bigger fish than I did.  I doubt that Bobby’ll ever let me live that down.

They also have a cafĂ© there.  They offer mostly sandwiches and drinks, but at night they have live music and dancing.  Kara loves to dance so we’ve gone and enjoyed ourselves a couple of times.  If you’re into karaoke, which I definitely am not, they do that too.

This is the pier from the condo where we stayed.

The part of the vacation that Justin enjoys is the little amusement park across the street from the condo we rented.  I guess most kids do like the rides.  Kara and I rode a couple of things ourselves.

Yesterday, Kara and I had just finished breakfast on our balcony overlooking the ocean when we saw five or six dolphins swimming just beyond the breakers.  Man, that was a thrill, but later that day we had to get out of the water because a gigantic sting ray was headed our way.

Kara went shopping with Bobby’s wife Sue.  They came back with such a lot of loot that we’ll have to ship it home.  We could never get it stuffed into our bags for the plan trip home.  The girls found a Christmas shop, and Kara bought enough ornaments to decorate our tree in a beach theme this Christmas.

No doubt about it, the farm seems a long way from here.  I imagine we’ll take plenty of other vacations, but I doubt that any of them will be any better than this one.  See you later.

Out and About at the Zoo

Welcome to Jo Linsdell's blog tour!  Jo has written a wonderful story called Out and About at the Zoo, and she's come to talk to us today about her work. Jo, thank you so much for stopping by. Your book is delightful.

For the benefit of those who don't know you, can you tell us a little bit about you?

Where to start.... well, I'm originally from the UK but moved to Rome, Italy in 2001. I'm married to a lovely Italian man named Maurizio and together we have two children. Matteo who is 4 years old and Lorenzo who is 9 months. I've been writing pretty much since I could hold a pen and love being a writer. I even enjoy the marketing side of things. I'm an avid blogger too. I can't imagine ever doing a different job now.
2.Wow, you even love marketing!  I'm not as good with that as you are.  What was your motivation for writing Out and About at the Zoo?

Matteo asked me why I hadn't written a book for him. I figured he made a good point and so decided to write one based on the first time I took him to the zoo. He played an active role in the creation of the book too. A very vocal and honest critic until both the text and illustrations were just right. It was nice to be able to involve him in my work for once.

3.What other things have you written?

I like to experiment with my writing and try out new genres. I've published various non-fiction including an English-Italian phrasebook (Italian for Tourists) and A Guide to Weddings in Italy, poetry, short stories and now a children's picture book. I'm also working on a chick-lit and a book about social media.

4.If I ever come to Rome I'll need a copy of that first book. What was the hardest part of writing the book?

Writing the text was the easy part. Sketching the illustrations wasn't a problem either (I studied art and design at college) but making them digital and print quality was a whole different story. It was my first time using a graphics program and it turned into a real learning curve. Transparencies and layers, suitable colours... I would have been completely lost without the advice and guidance of one of my tech savvy friends. He saved the day more than once!
5.I'm impressed that you pulled it off. What are your future plans regarding your work?

As I mentioned above, I'm currently working on a chick-lit and a non-fiction book about social media (one of my other big passions). I'm definitely going to do more children's books in the future too.
6.What advice would you give to those who'd like to write for children?

Draw up a plan of the pages so you can see how the layout of your book will be. This will help you divide the text and give you ideas the placing of illustrations. Also, Children's books are meant to be read aloud. Read to an audience or record yourself reading the text so you can check for flow.
Jo, thank you so much for including me on your blog tour. Readers, hurry and get the book as soon as possible so you can read it to your own children and Grandchildren.
