In this excerpt, my hero just told his wife he'd had an affair and had a child with the woman.
“If you’ll
excuse me, I think I’ll have a nap,” she said, her voice breathless and
strained. She refused to look at him. “I’m so tired all of a sudden, way too
tired to talk about this.”
He found vent
for his emotions in anger. “You damn well don’t want a nap; this is the way you
always act when you don’t want to face something.”
“I’m sorry.”
She shook her head as if she were trying hard to focus. “I have no idea what
you’re talking about.”

Avoidance... I love the realism in that.
ReplyDeleteWhat a heartbreaking situation. He obviously doesn't want to hurt her (more) but... she can damn well have a nap after that news.
ReplyDeleteShock, denial, fear, anger.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see if she turns her anger positive or negative.
Nice 8!
Hmmm, her reaction is FASCINATING. Hints at all kinds of things, can;t wait for more. Great 8!
ReplyDeleteAah! Procrastination. The answer to all the world's ills :)
ReplyDeleteThis pair of reactions hints at long-standing problems between them.
I agree with Botanist. My first thought is they've had long standing problems and he had an affair. More trouble ahead brought on with a son not hers. YIKES! We're hooked.
ReplyDeleteYeah...I'm with Gem on this one. And I think he's really got some nerve--getting angry after he dropped a bombshell like that one. Good 8, Elaine.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting actions and reactions. You reveal a lot about your characters in a few lines. Great eight.
ReplyDeleteNot sure hero is the right thing to call him.
ReplyDeleteEffective. You've packed a lot of emotions into a small space.
ReplyDeleteWell that snippet sure told a lot about their relationship. Very true to life. Definitely some distance there. Good job!

Interesting coping mechanism! Can't wait to read more, Elaine!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm not sure he's a hero...jerk seems a much better word!
