Saturday Sample: Purple Heart

Last Week:
Stan modestly brushed away his thanks. “Oh, I was glad to do it. I’m just happy that I could help.” He drained the last of his coffee and set his cup on the desk. “How about a tour?” 

“Sure.”
Taylor-Lord manufactured tiny chips for personal computers. Before they entered the factory, Mike and Stan had to put on full-body scrubs. Even their feet and hair had to be covered.

Stan led the way down a long central hallway with glass-walled rooms on either side. Inside one of the spotless rooms on the left, Stan showed Mike the job he would do. He might like working here. The wages and benefits pleased him, and the work didn’t look bad at all. 

When they finished the tour of the clean section of the factory, they took off their scrubs and Stan showed him the part of the factory where the chips were loaded and shipped. 

“When would you like to start, Mike?” 

“I need a day or two to find someplace to live. How about Monday?” 

“That works for me. Say, I just thought of something. Jenna West has a duplex for rent. I saw it on the bulletin board in the cafeteria.” 

“Who’s Jenna West?” 

“She works a couple of aisles away from you, but she isn’t here today. She called in with a virus of some sort. 


This week: Mike gets Jenna West's phone number. Stan speaks first.

She must really feel bad. Jenna hasn’t missed a day of work in the past year and a half.”

 “Could we get her number?”

“Sure can. I think Jenna would treat you right.”

Mike copied the phone number, and put it in his pocket. “Thanks again, Stan. I really do appreciate it.” 

 “You’re welcome. I’ll see you on Monday.”

    Putting in a good word ... but will he remember this when he meets her face-to-face?
