Blurb:
Running away from a fiancĂ© who betrayed her, Peyton O’Malley finds employment at a beautiful mountain inn called Rest Thy Head. She didn’t expect to live in the haunted room or to fall for the inn’s owner, a fire-scarred, war veteran who uses the inn to hide away from the world. She didn’t expect her sister to show up at Rest Thy Head either, much less her formidable mother.
Last Week:Chapter 1
Her mother had found it in a second hand shop and spent a long time refinishing it. No shabby chic for Eleanor! It now looked like a prized family piece, which was exactly what her mother had wanted.
Everything in this house looked old, elegant, and well- tended. She didn’t think anyone would guess most of the furniture came from thrift stores and junk shops.
“Peyton? Where are you?”
“Coming, Mother.”
As they drove across town to meet Ashley, who was having her bridesmaid dress altered, her mother chatted non-stop about the wedding. Like that wasn’t all she’d talked about for months!

This week:
Glad that isn't MY mother!! You do a great job with Peyton in this scene. It paints her as level-headed mediator with a nice touch of snark.
ReplyDeleteWow, all this tension between Ashley and her mother! I have to say I'm on Ashley's side but want her to have more backbone (unfair, I know, since we're just reading snippets but see how invested I am in your characters, LOL?). Great snippet...
ReplyDeleteSo lifelike it's scary. You've written a terrific picture of families; not all of them but a bunch I've known.
ReplyDeleteI prefer her attitude toward family, rather than the mother's.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Peyton! I feel like there is more we don't know yet, though.
ReplyDeleteHer mother would be really getting on my nerves if I were Peyton - great bit of characterisation though, I'm sure there are people who can relate to having a well meaning but domineering mother like her!
ReplyDeleteYou can really feel the tension!
ReplyDeleteRun, Peyton, run! This appointment will undoubtedly be super stressful. Momzilla!
ReplyDeleteI love the detail of the furniture from last week, too. It really says something about the effort her mom is willing to put into appearances!
Her mother is a piece of work. Peyton needs to find her inner strength to deal with that woman.
ReplyDeleteDelicious tension in this scene. Well done.
ReplyDeleteNo wonder she ran to get away from her. :-) Her mom wanted all the wrong things for all the wrong reasons for her daughter.
