The Devil's Breath: Sydney Rye Novel #5

The Devil’s Breath (A Sydney Rye Novel, #5)

by Emily Kimelman

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
One of Sydney Rye’s dear friends, Hugh Defry, has been accused of a brutal murder, but even though he has no memory of the night, Sydney believes he is incapable of such violence.
Called to investigate by Robert Maxim, a man she has until now, considered her greatest enemy, Sydney flies to Miami searching for the real killer. Rye’s suspicions are raised when she learns that Maxim not only wants to work together but also wants to build a friendship. She doesn’t begin to understand his motives until her former lover follows her to Florida to tell her a devastating secret.
As more people from her past turn up, and not knowing whom to trust, Sydney sees that her personal fight for justice has become something more than she had ever imagined and she is pushed towards making a decision that will change not just her life but possibly the future of the crime fighting.
EXCERPT:
His T-shirt, wet from the rain, clung to his chest outlining the strong muscles underneath. I looked up at him, he reached for me again and I slid back, bumping against a tree. He came in close and I tilted my face to look up into Mulberry's deep green eyes. "Kill him," I said.
"What?" His eyes narrowed.
"Kill Robert Maxim." I pushed off the tree bumping into him. "Then I'll trust you."
He grabbed my arm roughly. "Are you crazy?" he asked. The wind picked up and blew my wet hair across my face.
I stared up at him, hardening my gaze so that he knew I wasn't joking. "There is one way to solve this without having to run and that's to stand and fight, something else I'm pretty fucking good at," I said.
MY REVIEW: 5 out of 5 stars
Sydney and Blue are back in one of their most exciting adventures yet. Called home from India by the man she considers her deadliest enemy, Sydney confronts several characters from her past. Who can she trust? They all seem to have agendas and know something she doesn't. Remember Dan? He's the one who ultimately tells her what's going on.
In this story Sydney has to rely on other people, and of course on Blue who saves her from...something. Sydney never gives up fighting, though, especially at the end of the book when she makes a choice that will probably change her life forever.
I liked the plot which is relatively complex, and I like that Sydney had a lot of decisions to make. I also like the action sequences. Toward the end of the book, I think the author's writing was fantastic as she revealed Sydney's confusion.
I really didn't want to stop reading this one and was impatient because I had to go to bed before I could finish it. Long live Sydney Rye! Write some more Ms. Kimelman.
UNLEASHED is the first book in Emily Kimelman's best selling Sydney Rye series of mysteries.
When the series begins Sydney Rye is named Joy Humbolt. She does not like people telling her what to do, so it comes as no surprise that she was just fired from her last job. When she buys Charlene Miller's dog-walking business on Manhattan's exclusive upper east side, it seems like the perfect fit: Quiet environment, minimal contact with people.
But then one of her clients turns up dead, and Charlene disappears. Rumors say Charlene was having an affair with the victim--and of course, everyone assumes Joy must know where she is. Joy begins to look into the crime, first out of curiosity then out of anger when there is another murder and threats start to come her way.
When police detective Mulberry is assigned to the case, Joy finds a kindred spirit--cynical and none-too-fond of the human race. As they dig deep into the secrets of Manhattan's elite, they not only get closer to the killer but also to a point of no return. One last murder sends Joy Humbolt hurtling over the edge. Her only chance of survival is to become Sydney Rye.
Strings Of Glass Book Review
BLURB:
STRINGS OF GLASS is the fourth novel in Emily Kimelman's Sydney Rye Series of dark murder mystery novels. This series features a strong female protagonist and her rescue dog, Blue. It is recommended for the 18+ who enjoy some violence, don't mind dirty language, and are up for a dash of sex. Not to mention an awesome, rollicking good mystery.
 Sydney Rye is hanging out in India with her boyfriend, Dan, reading paperbacks and sipping beer. No violence and no reminders of her past. But when she and Blue, are attacked by a pack of wild dogs, Sydney starts to feel that old itch again; to do good by being bad.
Trouble finds Rye when she stops the attempted rape and murder of Anita, a reporter working on a story of corruption and human trafficking. The atrocities Anita describes send Sydney, Blue and Dan on a quest that takes them across India after a dangerous and, up until now, untouchable, figure. While Sydney struggles to accept her true nature she realizes that it is the only way to end decades of abuse and exploitation. But Rye fears that she will lose herself, becoming no better than the monster she fights against.
 My Thoughts
I totally enjoyed Strings Of Glass. The heroine Sydney Rye feels conflicted about some things she has to do in her chosen lifestyle, but at the same time she is driven to save others since she failed to save her brother who was murdered. I loved the care she gave to her best friend, a rescue dog named Blue. Her relationship with boyfriend Dan isn’t quite so easy. Dan is more uncomplicated than Sydney, and she doesn’t think she’s worthy of him. She's doing a lot of soul-searching in this story.
 Dan seems to disagree with her. I haven’t read the entire series yet, but in this book, Dan comes through like a trooper. Sydney doesn’t want him involved in her latest case, but he gets involved anyway, and ultimately proves to be of great help to her. We find, though, that Dan has serious competition from a man Sydney is both drawn to and repelled by.
Strings Of Glass shows Sydney as an action hero as she prevents a brutal rape and targets a man involved in prostitution and the slave trade. Don’t worry. She’s well able to handle it.
 The action is fast paced, the characters and all their flaws are vividly portrayed, and you’ll find yourself rooting for Sydney all the way.  I’d give it 5 out of 5 stars.
 EXCERPT:
Mulberry laughed. "Come on, what are you doing here?"
 "What do you mean? I'm living here."
"I can see that," he said, then looked around the cabin. I saw his jaw clench and then he asked quietly, "With Dan?"
"Yes, with Dan."
"And that's what you want to do?" He looked over at me again, glints of yellow in his eyes sparkled in the sunlight that streamed through a nearby window.
"What do you mean?"
"You want to stay here, not have any more adventures with me?"
"Your adventures usually involve Bobby Maxim, lies, and almost getting me killed," I said, an edge of anger in my voice.
Mulberry frowned. "What are you going to do?" He stood up and stepped toward me, his broad shoulders blocking out the sun's rays. "Stay here and marry Dan? Become a homemaker?" I felt anger rolling off of him like a wave of heat surges over blacktop in the desert.
His rage struck me like an unexpected blow and I yelled at him. "Why not Mulberry? Why wouldn't I marry Dan? Because that might make me happy. Shouldn't I be happy!"
His face paled and he shrunk away from me. I felt like a bull, huffing air out my nose, ready to charge. He shook his head. "I'm sorry, Sydney. Of course you should be happy." The word seemed to die in his mouth. He ran a hand through his dark hair, the silver that peppered it shining in the light.
I squeezed my eyes shut and rubbed at them with my free hand. "God Mulberry, what are you doing here?"
"I don't know," he said, not looking at me. A moment passed as we stood there, the steam from my shower and heat of our emotions filling the room with a wet and heavy silence.
In exchange he offers her something she had given up hope of ever having; freedom from her past.
With her dog, Blue, at her side, Rye meets up with her new partner, a handsome man she's not sure she can trust. Heading for Mexico City, they go undercover, posing as husband and wife. EXCERPT
From UNLEASHED (A Sydney Rye Novel, #1)
 The sun was slipping behind the brownstones across the street and turning the sky pink when I left for Nancy’s. “Hey,” said the guy on the corner who always said hey. I ignored him. “Hey, pretty lady, you got a beautiful ass,” he tried again. I watched the concrete and power-walked away.
Ten minutes later I was at Nancy’s, a low-key lesbian bar with a nice backyard. If you wanted to talk to a stranger you could, but there was no pressure. If you wanted to take someone home you could, but again there was no pressure.
“Tequila gimlet, straight up,” I said. The bartender, whose name I was pretty sure was Diane, nodded and moved off to make my drink. My face, reflected in the mirror behind the bar, peered from between a bottle of Blue Curacao and Midori. I needed a haircut. My fashionable bangs had grown out, and now I just pushed them behind my ears. Last night’s fight with Marcus and my early-morning journey to the pound had left puffy, blue-tinted circles under my eyes. All those tears had left the white around my gray irises streaked with red and—I leaned forward a little to make sure—my upper eyelids a bizarre orange.
Diane placed a martini glass brimming with sheer red liquid on the bar, and I handed her a ten. I moved toward the backyard, trying not to spill my drink all over my hand while spilling my drink all over my hand.
