Drown: Orders of the Sky Part One

Drown (Orders of the Sky #1)
Booze. Brawls. Betrayal. The summer of 1988 changed everything. My parents separated, I left for college, and Stone Harrison lit my world like Apollo streaking across the sky. My obsession and desire for him overpowered all my sense and drained my sensibility as I fought to maintain control over my own destiny. Four years spent in pursuit of degrees and one certain soldier altered my future forever. Can I be the person I am destined to be with him or does a compromise of my soul spoil the perfect ending?

Excerpt from Drown

“Come with me.” I grabbed Stone’s hand and led him from the table, through the den, and up the stairs to my bedroom. I closed the door behind us. “Ta-da.” I flourished my arms wide. “Welcome to my room.”

“Nice. You’ve never shown me your room before. Anything else you want to unveil?” Mischief flashed behind his eyes.

“Maybe,” I teased, touching his arm, “but first…” I skipped to the closet and lifted a box from the top shelf. “Your Christmas present. See, I didn’t forget you.” I carried the box to the edge of the bed.

“I could never forget you.” He reached out and put both hands around my waist, pinning me to his body.

My knees made like a hot knife through butter—I melted at his touch. My arms went around his neck as his lips consumed mine. Fire jumped from his hands as they slid up to my breasts. Fighting the undeniable undulation of the tide, I pulled away and murmured, “I have to tell you something.”

“I don’t want to know.” His lips found my neck.

“But—”

“Stop talking.”

He lifted me in his arms and laid me on the bed. The box fell to the floor. “Oh, Andie—I’ve wanted you so much.” Skillfully, he began to unbutton my blouse. His powerful hands gripped my shoulders; his soft lips pressed against my skin. The blouse slid to the floor.

“I want you too.” I responded, my hands groping for his belt.

“Do you?” His kisses ceased and he jerked away. He stared at the nightstand. “Do you,” he repeated, “or do you want him?” He picked up the framed picture of Travis—arms encircling my waist, Christmas tree behind us in the background. The glass shattered as he threw it to the floor.

Saturday Sample

Today's excerpt comes from Rest Thy Head, and all I can say is ouch.

She cupped his ruined cheek in her palm. “I love you so much.”

“Don’t.”

Peyton winced as if he had slapped her. He sounded so cold! “Don’t what? Don’t love you? It’s too late for that.”

“That’s your problem, isn’t it?” He stood up and glared at her. “Leave me alone. I don’t want to marry you or be a part of your life in any way. Is it possible that you still don’t understand what I’ve said? We don’t have any kind of a future together. In fact, I’d appreciate it if you’d leave Rest Thy Head as soon as possible.”

He stalked out of the office and slammed the door behind him.

Blurb:
Running away from a fiancé who betrayed her, Peyton O’Malley finds employment at a beautiful mountain inn called Rest Thy Head. She didn’t expect to live in the haunted room or to fall for the inn’s owner, a fire-scarred, war veteran who uses the inn to hide away from the world. She didn’t expect her sister to show up at Rest Thy Head either, much less her formidable mother.

Now, thanks to the aid of a friendly ghost, Peyton has a shot at true love, and so does her sister Ashley, provided the guys cooperate of course!

Snippet Sunday and Weekend Writing Warriors

Rest Thy Head releases 9/23 from Astraea Press.

 Isn't my new cover beautiful? The cover artist did a super job depicting Rest Thy Head, and she also added the ghost for me. Do you see it? My excerpt today is of course from Rest Thy Head. Remember last week when my heroine left her boyfriend at the altar after he cheated on her? Well, we're skipping a lot because today I just felt like sharing something else. Here goes. Peyton is speaking to Jake.

She moved closer to him and laid her head on his shoulder.
“Touching you feels like coming home to a house filled with love
after you’ve had a hard day. It makes me feel safe, like the Mrs.
Haynes of the world can’t hurt me because you won’t let them.”
She gently stroked his face. “I don’t see scars either. I see a man
with more sex appeal than the law should allow.” Her arms
sneaked around his waist. “I want you so much in so many ways.”

Lizzy

Lizzy
by Krystal Shannan

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Keeping secrets is dangerous…and painful.
The last man who found out Lizzy MacLaughlin’s secret left without so much as a goodbye. Now, utterly in love, Lizzy holds her breath that her six-month relationship with retired army ranger, Ethan Hart, won’t end the same way.
Life is never perfect…or easy.
Ethan is head-over-heels in love with Lizzy, and warring schedules make time together precious. Determined to be together without interruptions, they plan a weekend getaway at his lake house –unaware the past Ethan is trying to ignore is coming hell-bent on destroying what Ethan holds most dear.
Will Lizzy’s secret tear them apart, or will something far worse threaten their very lives?
EXCERPT:
“Mom has given the stink eye to every guy that’s ever taken me out. She has to make up for Dad not being here.”
A surge of jealousy wormed its way into his mind. “How many guys have you been out with?”
“Simmer down, soldier.” She giggled and winked. “My love life is boring and consists of one guy in high school and two guys in college. I wasn’t a nun, but it wasn’t like I got around either. You have nothing to be all caveman about.”
“Sorry, I was having a moment.” He really was. The thought of any other man touching her, kissing her, putting hands anywhere on her body made his blood boil.
“No worries, but would you mind terribly going and getting me a plate of bread and cheese. I swear the buffet smells like something died and then came back to life, but I’m starving and desperate.”
His concerns returned full-force with her joking comment about smelly food. Something was going on with her. It’d been nearly a week since he’d seen her eat any meant and that was very out of character.
“Sit here, baby. I’ll be right back.” He helped her into a chair at an empty table and then went to the buffet table.
The spread of food ranged from deliciously smelling barbeque, mashed potatoes, corn, rolls, cole slaw, and trays of crackers, cheese, and fruit. Nothing smelled out of the ordinary to him, but he grabbed an assortment of crackers and cheese, along with a few pieces of fruit, just in case she might want some.
He walked back to her and set the plate in front of her along with another glass of water he’d snagged from a passing server.
“Thank you.” She smiled and popped a cracker in her mouth.
“Anything for you, baby. I’m sorry you aren’t feeling well.”
“I’ll be fine. I promise. I’m already feeling better,” she answered and bit into a slice of cheese. “This is really good.”
“Little sis, you okay?” Karen said you weren’t feeling well.” Caiden’s voice over his shoulder startled him. He was the only one of Lizzy’s brothers who could sneak up on him.
“I’m fine, Caiden. Don’t you dare go telling Trevor or Harvey. I got a little overheated outside. I’m fine. Ethan is taking good care of me.”
Her big brother snorted and Ethan bit back a grin. The MacLaughlin brothers all liked him, but after walking into the dressing room this morning with Lizzy’s sparkly lip-gloss smeared on his mouth, they were rescinding their approval temporarily.
“I’ll come back in a little while and check on you again.”
Ethan turned in his chair and met Caiden’s hard glare. “I won’t leave her.”
“I know.” Caiden sighed and nodded. He stepped toward his sister and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
She smiled and patted her brother’s arm. “You worry too much. Go back to Lina and enjoy the party.”
