Beyond the Book: Cowboy Out of Time

Did I ever mention that I like time travel novels? Most of the ones I’ve read have been fun reads, and this one is no exception. Let me share a blurb with you, and then I’ll tell you what I thought of it.
Blurb:
Dumped in my lap at a few minutes before five o’clock on Friday — the deputy wants to drop off a confused wanderer? Our Social Services aren’t equipped to handle a tall, rustic cowboy who looks like he just stepped out of a movie Western… dust included.
But the deputy’s gone and the cowboy is suddenly my responsibility. Or is it the other way around? Hunt Weston announces he’s come here to protect me! From what or whom, he doesn’t know. But he’s come a long way… in both distance and time. Yeah, this Weston character claims when he went to sleep last night, it was 1885. That’s a hundred years ago.
No ID, no proof of his claims — unless you count the authentic vintage clothing and that original Colt Peacemaker strapped to his hip. Other than his gun and a rugged Bowie knife, this cowboy’s only possessions are 32 silver dollars… all minted before 1885. And the only documentation he possesses is a torn half of a playing card… with my name, this town and county, and the date October 6 — two days from now.
Weston can’t explain anything… indeed, he doesn’t understand it himself. In fact, if anyone had tried to convince him that he’d traveled 100 years overnight, he would’ve laughed in their face. But here he is… sent by a mysterious stranger to protect me, Elvira Rose Roamer.
Oh, did I mention that when Weston saw the name, Elvira Rose, on the top half of that card, he thought he was being sent to protect my great-great-grandmother, Elvira Rose Bolling — whom he’d met and grown fond of… back in 1885?
My Review:
I totally enjoyed Cowboy Out of Time. First, I loved Hunt. He was a cowboy on a quest who didn’t hesitate to do what he needed to do to fulfill his mission. I also loved the way he spoke.  And of course, his reactions to the modern world were amusing. I liked Rose too, but Hunt was my favorite.
I thought the plot was credible and well thought through. It pulled me in with no trouble. Also, the historical info seemed correct.
The romance between Hunt and Rose was well done. They didn’t lay eyes on each other and instantly fall in love. Their love grew organically as they learned more about each other.
The book didn’t end the way I thought it would, but it did set up book number two, which I’ll be waiting for. Well done, Jeff!

Broken Dreams

BROKEN DREAMS
by Nancy Pennick

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Two friends...
Blood sisters till the end...
Until they're not.
One cold night in a boarding school dorm, two fourteen-year-old girls make a blood sister pact. Friends forever. As young schoolgirls, they're determined to find true love, learning the hits and misses along the way. As graduation nears, the girls have different outlooks for the future. Lucinda longs for adventure. Anna chooses city life and marriage. Finding their way back together, the girls head west for an experience of a lifetime until a handsome cowboy bursts into their lives, changing the course of their friendship forever.
EXCERPT:
Anna tentatively put the other foot on the ice. “I’m doing it!” She grinned widely for a second until her body slipped out from under her.
“Anna!” Lucinda grabbed for her, but it was too late. Anna lay a few feet away from the boy who still struggled to get on his feet. “Come on.” Lucinda seized Anna by one arm and the boy by the other and marched them to a bench. “Watch and learn.” She daintily walked away on her skates and slipped slowly back onto the ice. She caught up with her sister. Arm in arm they disappeared into the crowd.
“Hello, I don’t think we formally met.” The young man stuck out his hand. “James Trent.”
“Anna. Anna Douglass.” She shook his gloved hand. He had a nice smile, auburn hair and golden brown eyes. A few freckles were sprinkled across his nose.
James smoothed his hair back and replaced the cap he probably lost during the fall. “I’m a sophomore over at Lake Forest.”
“This is my first year at Ferry.” Anna gazed down at the snowy ground, suddenly nervous.“First time on skates?” He laughed and snorted at the same time.Anna relaxed and looked him in the eye. She saw a faint redness creep up his neck and knew he was embarrassed. “You couldn’t tell?” She giggled, hoping he noticed she forgave the snort.“Well, I’m not giving up. I hope you won’t either. What I mean is I hope I see you here again.”
Under Texas Blue Skies
Under Texas Blue Skies
by Debra Holt
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

J.D. Sterling, the sexy star of country music, had come back home to McKenna Springs, Texas. Years before, he had left to chase his dream and had succeeded. His life was almost perfect. Almost. He was still missing the part of his heart he had left behind…Mandy Lawson.

Amanda Lawson had changed from the young, innocent Mandy…the teenager madly in love with the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Heartbreak and tragedy would do that to a person. She was determined to keep her well-ordered, work-driven life on the successful path she had fought to achieve on her own. No singing cowboy with a devil’s smile in his green eyes and a sexy body in tight jeans was going to be allowed close enough to break her heart again.

EXCERPT:

“I have other business in town also,” Amanda spoke up. “I don’t know why I was called out here but…”

“Because I want you.” Those jade green eyes pinned her to her spot. J.D.’s choice of words knocked the air out of Amanda’s lungs for a moment. Did he think that he could turn that look on her, along with that famous half-grin that sent deep grooves down his cheeks and made fingers itch to touch them and females swoon at his feet?  He was still the lying, no good cowboy who had played her for a fool and then left her behind when the bright lights beckoned. He wanted her? Well, he'd had her once, but never again.

Cold blue eyes pinned him. “People don’t always get what they want, J.D. But sometimes they do get what they deserve.”

When Mandy stood looking at him with those blue eyes, where once there had been the warmth of love glowing in them for him, there was now a cool curtain, devoid of anything but a banked anger mixed with a dash of indifference. For some reason, he felt he had been judged and found lacking in her estimation. He definitely had to regroup. There was another battle ahead, and he had fought many in his lifetime and won each of them. This would be the most important one. Losing was not an option.
