I Appreciate Them

I’ve had a pretty good week.  On Monday I had a speaking engagement and a book signing at The Greenville Women’s Club.  This organization has been around since 1947.  They meet in the Beattie house, the second oldest house in Greenville.  The house is nicely landscaped with dogwood trees, azaleas, and other Southern flowers.  The club served some lovely refreshments before my talk.

I told the ladies how I became an author, and then I read them the prologue and part of chapter one from A New Dream.  I think they enjoyed it.  When I got to the part about the accident that destroyed my hero’s career, one woman audibly gasped.

After the reading, I signed some books for them.

Days like this are sweet for authors.  It’s nice to have your work appreciated and praised.  If you have a favorite author, send them an email and tell them so.  Trust me; they’ll appreciate it.

Why I Love Wednesdays

My topic today is favorite author blogs.  Have you ever looked at http://www.savvyauthors.com?  I like this blog because it has a lot to offer.  They feature author interviews, articles on the craft and industry of writing, contests, workshops, legal issues, marketing and promo, contests, author interviews, and the writing life.  The articles on the front page look especially interesting today if you'd like to check them out.

Six Sentence Sunday

Thanks for stopping by!  Today's excerpt comes from A New Dream.  In this excerpt my heroine pays a surprise visit to her fiance. Read it with caution, though.  Things aren't always what they seem.  A New Dream is available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble or Astraea Press.

Matt didn’t answer, but the sound of running water had stopped, so Violet pushed open the door. In the dim light she couldn’t identify the black object near the door, but she could plainly see the other items. A trail of lacey, pink undergarments led the eye toward the bed. Violet identified Stacey at once even though she saw only one slender, bare shoulder and a head full of tousled, blonde hair. The blood drained from her face as she started to tremble. She would have given anything she possessed to be away from this awful place, but she couldn’t move.

Sweet Saturday Sample

Today's excerpt comes from Return Engagement.  In this excerpt my hero and heroine have gone to a beach front carnival.  Return Engagement is available at Whiskey Creek Press.

She paused when they passed a shooting arcade. "Richard, you’re FBI, so I guess you’re supposed to be a good shot. Win me a stuffed animal."

Richard groaned. "Those guns are probably all sighted wrong so you can’t win. Couldn’t I just buy you one instead?"

"No, that won’t do at all. Never mind. It’s okay if you don’t think you can do it," she replied with no hint of a smile whatsoever. Would he try to win a prize for her or not?

"Okay, I know a challenge when I hear it." Richard stepped up to the counter and inspected the row of guns provided by the arcade. "I’ll win you an animal if I have to stay here all night."

The attendant, a wizened gnome of a man with a sour expression on his face, wandered over to them as though he was conferring a great honor on them. "Win a prize for the
lady, mister? Dollar a shot."

"Yeah, I’ll give it a try."

He selected the gun he wanted and shot, but he missed. "Just as I expected. The sights are off, and it pulls to the left." He adjusted for the bad sights, aimed, and squeezed the trigger. This time he hit the target dead center.

"Hooray," cheered Elizabeth. "I want that big white cat over there. How many does he have to hit to get it?"

"Ten in a row," the man sourly replied.

A few minutes later Richard and Elizabeth walked away, carrying the big cat with them.

Elizabeth tucked her arm through his and squeezed. "This is so exciting! Nobody ever won anything for me before. You are such a good shot. I bet you’re one of the FBI’s best marksmen." Is he blushing? thought Elizabeth. I bet it’s been a long time since a woman made him blush.

Okay, I know everyone is looking ahead to spring, but I have a winter outfit to show you, and the good news is, most of the items are on sale.  Let's start with this gorgeous coat.  It's reduced from $470 to $260  If you don't like the collar it's detachable.  Buy it at Coast Stores.

Now for some shoes.  I like these neutral colored pumps from LK Bennett of London.  Get them for 185 pounds.

Now for a purse.  I love this pearl clutch which has a snake chain and is lined with champagne tinted satin.  Buy it at Coast stores for $110.

Now let's add some pearls.  This Kenneth Jay Lane three row necklace looks perfect.  Buy it at Pret-a-Beaut for 140 pounds.

We need earrings so how about these African pearl and diamond ones?  Buy them at Bloomingdale's for $3880.

I guess we need a dress too.  I like this Zac Posen wool blend crepe.  It was $1250, now only $375.  Buy it at The Outnet.

Lovely, isn't it?

Why I Love Wednesday

Today's topic is book challenges.  I always intend to accept some challenges, but since Christmas I haven't had the time to do anything but edit.  I had a short story published at Christmas and at one time was doing edits on three books at once.  Edits for publishers, I mean.  I've gotten it down to two books now, but I'm still strapped for time.  Still, I wanted to participate today.  Why I Love Wednesday originates at http://www.reflectionsofabookaholic.com.  If you aren't familiar with this, do please check it out.

Since I haven't had the time to accept any challenges, I've decided to share a short excerpt from my own multi-cultural novel Purple Heart.  Purple Heart is available at either Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or The Wild Rose Press.

In this excerpt my hero whose best friend was killed in Iraq (He's going to reform.  I promise.) interacts with my heroine, a woman from the Middle East.

He opened the door, and his expression darkened when he saw Jenna West.  “Can I help you?” he coldly asked.  He hoped she wouldn’t make a habit of bothering him.  If she did he’d have to move to the Botany Arms, and he didn’t like that at all.

The woman gave him a big, sunny smile.  “I know you probably haven’t had time to go to the grocery store, so I thought I’d offer you some lunch.”  She held out a casserole dish.  “I hope you enjoy it.”

How dare she try to be nice to him!  He didn’t want or need her charity, but if he didn’t take it he’d seem like a jerk.  “Thank you.  I’ll return your dish,” he stonily answered.

“You’re welcome.  I was glad to do it.”

She hastily took herself back to her own half of the duplex, and Mike tried to decide what to do with the casserole.  He was starving to death, and it smelled great, but he didn’t really want to eat something that she had cooked.  She might be dirty.

His stomach growled, and he actually took a plate out of the cabinet before he decided that he wouldn’t risk it.  He dumped the whole thing into the garbage and ran some water into the dish.  Boy, it had smelled good.

With an exclamation of disgust, he grabbed his grocery list and pulled on his coat.  He didn’t have a bite to eat in the whole house.
