Midshipman henry Gallant in Space

Readers, I have a confession to make. I'm a science fiction junkie. I love all the Star Trek movies and TV shows, and Star Wars is still wonderful to me. That's why I was so glad to interview Peter Alesso, the author of Midshipman Henry Gallant in Space. It just sounded like my kind of book.  Peter, welcome to my blog.

1.Tell us 5 things about yourself that no one would ever guess.

I am a voracious reader. I have habitually read several books a weeks in a wide variety of subjects since I first obtained a library card. I found that science fiction novels provided wonderful adventures in unexpected places with unusual characters and strange circumstance. I’ve enjoyed them all my life.

2. Me too. Who are your favorite authors?

My favorite Scifi author is Robert Heinlein. He was able to span the emotional range from rage to laughter in developing his characters. He used humor and romance as intrinsic elements of to the human spirit. Each displays a vital aspect of each character in a story. The problem is that both human and romance are difficult to include in a complex story because they may require significant personality development to express and that may distract from the central arc of the action of the story. A strong writer should be able to engage both of these essential human characteristic within the context of his main story line.

 3.I'll put him on my list.  When did you first realize you were destined to be an author?

I enjoyed Jack Campbell’s The Lost Fleet series and it inspired a story that I wanted to share. Midshipman Henry Gallant was the result.

4.What one or two lines best sums you up as an author? (tagline)

I think finding an author you admire and would like to emulate provides the stimulus to become an author. By examining just what it is that you find so compelling about that author will give you a start to developing your skills. It may be that you can develop similar skills with practice. Always remember that whatever criticism you get that any feedback, complimentary or critical, can be useful in learning more about a writer’s ability to improve and develop better skills.

5.What activity (cause, charity, organization) consumes your time when you’re away from the keyboard?

love to read, do word (or math) puzzles. I also develop computer program apps for Android. I like to work out both my left and right hemispheres of the brain using a wide variety of skill sets and abilities.

Uh oh. You lost me on the math puzzles.  Readers, let's have a blurb and excerpt.

BLURB:

As the last star fighter in squadron 111, Midshipman Henry Gallant is on his way from Jupiter to Mars. With the United Planets' fleet on the verge of annihilation, he can expect no help as he passes through the asteroid belt and threatening aliens. With so much uncertainty about the aliens’ capabilities and intentions, analyzing the captured computer equipment in Gallant’s possession could prove crucial.

The fate of Earth could rest on the abilities of Midshipman Henry Gallant. Unfortunately, it is his abilities that have been much in doubt during his tour of duty. In an era of genetic engineering, he is the only Natural (non-genetically enhanced) officer left in the fleet. His classmates and superior officers have all expressed their concern that he will not be up to the demands of the space service. Only bright and attractive junior officer Kelsey Mitchel has shown any sympathy for him. Now as his navigator on the last fighter in squadron 111, her life as well as a good many others, depends on Henry Gallant.

A massive solar flare roared across the pockmarked face of the sun producing static interference on every display console operating in the tiny spacecraft as it approached the United Planets' battle cruiser Repulse in orbit around Jupiter.
“No need to worry young man, we’re almost there,” said the aged pilot.
“I’m not concerned about the storm,” said newly commissioned Midshipman Henry Gallant. Eagerly, he shifted in his seat to get a better glimpse of the massive ship that was to become his new home for the next two years.
The pilot maneuvered expertly to minimize the worst effects of the x-ray and gamma radiation until the craft made its tortured way from the sunlit brilliance into the cold black shadow of Repulse. The tiny ship quivered gently as its tractors reached out to the behemoth warship, slowly drawing alongside.
When it attached to the Repulse’s docking hatch, Gallant transferred to the warship and made his way to the bridge. He found the Officer of the Watch standing next to the empty captain’s chair surrounded by its nest of displays and virtual readouts. The officer rested his hand briefly on the panel concealing the Artificial Intelligence (AI) tactical analyzer.
“Midshipman Henry Gallant reporting aboard, sir,” he said, standing as tall as his seventeen-year-old gangly figure would allow. He tugged at his uniform blouse to straighten the buttons into proper alignment.
“Welcome aboard, Mr. Gallant. I’m Lieutenant Mather.” Mather was of average height, barrel-chested with sharp-angular facial features. Stoic, he showed little interest in the new arrival. “Please give me your comm pin.”
Gallant handed over his pin and Mather made several quick selections on a touch screen console. He swiped the pin passed the chip reader which loaded the ID and personnel information into Repulse’s computer.
Gallant took the opportunity to look around the spacious semicircular compartment with its numerous apparatus and instruments. The captain's seat was centrally located and he noticed that many of the other chairs were also unoccupied. Apparently some watch stations were only manned during conditions of higher alert.
He observed the watch standers carrying out their ritual duties. The communication panel was manned by a midshipman who looked occupied with an incoming message. The radar station was also manned, but by a technician who was diligently studying his display. Gallant couldn't tell what he was tracking, but there were several blips on the scope. The weapons and astrogator positions were vacant; several science analysis stations were operating automatically.

Shadow of Perception

Shadow of Perception

by Kristine Mason

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
What happens when negligent plastic surgeons receive a taste of their own medicine…?
Chicago investigative reporter, Eden Risk, receives an unmarked envelope containing a postcard ordering her to watch the enclosed DVD…or someone else dies. No Police. After Eden watches the DVD, a gruesome, horrifying surgery, she turns to the private criminal investigation agency, CORE, for help. Only she hadn’t expected that help to come with a catch. Her former lover, Hudson Patterson, has been assigned to the case.
Hudson would rather have another CORE agent handle the investigation. Two years ago, he’d screwed things up with Eden…bad. And as more DVDs arrive, Eden and Hudson find themselves not only knee-deep in a twisted investigation, but forced to deal with their past, and the love they’d tried to deny.
EXCERPTS:
Excerpt:
Bad Guy’s POV:
The alarm on his watch beeped, reminding him what he’d already known. His patient would be waking soon, and by the low moan from the other room, he would have to act fast before the bastard regained full consciousness. Sure, he’d strapped the man down, but he didn’t want to miss the look on the shithead’s face when his eyes fluttered open, only to discover he’d just woken up in hell.
As he was about to exit the office, though, shame suddenly clouded his judgment. What he’d spent seven long years preparing for went beyond immoral and had his conscience battling with his anger and need for revenge. Sweat coated his skin and trickled down his back. His heart quickened and his head grew dizzy with the onslaught of a panic attack. Until he glanced at the letter he had framed and hung on the wall. The final contact he would ever have from his beloved daughter. While he’d memorized Eliza’s words, each bold and bubbly stroke of her script, he honed in on one line in particular for encouragement.
Make them listen, Daddy.
Another moan, this time even louder, filtered into the office. His head cleared, his heart slowed to normal, and an eerie calm settled over him.
“They’ll do more than listen, baby,” he whispered, rage suddenly sweeping away any thoughts of immorality or ethics or principles. Screw those things. Screw those quacks who had destroyed his daughter’s life.
Without hesitation he left the office and entered the main section of the thirty-by-fifty steel garage. He hadn’t needed the entire space and had chosen to fulfill his plans in the west corner of the building, where the lighting was best and the bathroom and utility sink were closest. Things would become messy after all.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
I didn’t pick up my first romance novel until I was in my late twenties. Immediately hooked, I read a bazillion books before deciding to write one of my own. After the birth of my first son I needed something to keep my mind from turning to mush, and Sesame Street wasn’t cutting it. While that first book will never see the light of day, something good had come from writing it. I realized my passion, and had found a career that I love.
When I’m not writing contemporary romances and dark, romantic suspense novels (or reading them!) I’m chasing after my four kids and two neurotic dogs.
Beyond the Book: Princess Morgane Tells All
Greetings!  My name is Princess Morgane. I am Madame Cantrell's heroine in her wonderful book The Enchanted. Last week my husband Prince Alan told you some things he discovered about Madame Cantrell, and today I will tell you five things I have learned about her.
1.Madame and her young grandson go once a week to eat hot dogs at their favorite fast food restaurant.
2.Madame recently acquired a new horseless carriage, but it looks nothing like her former carriage, and she cannot find it in large parking lots.
3.Recently, Madame cleaned out her closet. She found things that still have the tags on them. Alas, she has gained weight and cannot wear them.
4.During the night, Madame's cat climbed into the ceiling from the laundry room and fell onto Madame's son who was sleeping below. He was not amused.
5.Madame has taken The Enchanted on a blog tour. Today she has three stops. You should follow her tour and comment often because she is giving away a $100.00 gift certificate to either Amazon or B&N.  Find her schedule here.
From Tragedy Comes Love
Readers, please help me welcome the fabulous Lynn Spangler to the blog.  Lynn's here to tell us about her new release From Tragedy Comes Love.  It sounds good to me.  I hope everybody will head on over to Astraea Press and pick up a copy.
This story was written in memory of my mother. She influenced parts of the story. I hope after you read the story, that you appreciate the ending. I know my Mom is in Heaven looking down on me now. I love you, Mom!
Blurb:
Sometimes light and love extinguish the darkness of tragedy…
The heartache of loss weighed heavy on Blythe Kenner. Blythe’s mother had been her best friend, her confidant, her mentor. Now, she is alone. Or is she?
In steps ex-boyfriend Garrett Richmond. Blythe dumped him with little explanation. His feelings for her were so complete that they made her feel unworthy. She was unsure if she’d ever be able to love someone so intently.
From the tragedy of death, Garrett feels the need to help, comfort, and shelter the woman who still held his heart captive. He knows she needs space after the loss of her mother but he won’t stay away for long.
Will Garrett’s daily check-ins rekindle feelings for him she thought had long since passed or will his strength and kindness ignite the spark threatening to light the fire again?
Excerpt:
With a wistful sigh, she opened the door and froze in place.
Garrett Richmond stood in all his handsome glory.
“What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
He seemed to study her, his gaze resting on her face. Oh, how she wished she’d never answered the door. She looked like a train wreck and felt the same. Garrett, on the other hand, looked impeccable in his three-piece suit.
“Your mother, whom I liked immensely, just passed away. I couldn’t ignore that or you. I had to see how you were.”
“I’m…,” she stammered. A lump formed in her throat and she swallowed hard. “I’m okay. Just dealing with funeral arrangements.”
“Are you sure? No offense, but you look beat.”
She leaned her head against the door. “I am tired. It’s hard to take care of all the arrangements and what-not by yourself.”
“You’re not, you know.”
Though his stance was casual, hands in pockets, jingling change, his face was serious. Garrett’s eyes were blue pools of emotions. His words echoed in her mind and she found herself confused by their meaning.
“I’m not what?”
“Alone.” That one word held so much promise and she almost believed it.
Weekend Writing Warriors: You Whipped Him
Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors.  In today's excerpt the king has arrived to collect his son from prison.  If you recall, Alan was sent to prison because he refused to marry the girl the king picked out for him.  When you finish here, find more lovely sentences at http://www.wewriwa.comhttp://www.wewriwa.com.
Excerpt:
"Turn around," King Bowdyn commanded. The prince did
so with absolutely no animation. Bowdyn stared at his son's back.
"You whipped him. He bears the scars from the flogging."
The keeper shifted uneasily as he clasped and unclasped his
hands. "He is not stupid. One flogging was all that it took, so the
scarring is minimal."
Sweet Saturday Sample: Bet You Fifty Dollars
Welcome to Sweet Saturday Sample.  My excerpt today comes from my current WIP The Captain and the Cheerleader.  Susan my heroine is having an irritating encounter with a colleague. What do you think?  Does it generate any interest? Anything I need to change?
She watched as Robin tossed her hair and pouted.  “If I can’t get his attention he isn’t interested in women.”
Several people rolled their eyes.  “Oh, I don’t think that’s the problem at all.” Susan smiled her most serene smile at her irritating colleague.  “You just don’t know how to attract a man like Kurt.”
Robin’s eyebrows shot straight up.  “And you do?  If that’s true why haven’t you already gone out with him?  Don’t tell me you wouldn’t be interested in him.  He’s hot.”
“Until recently I was involved with someone else.  I wasn’t interested in seeing Kurt or any other man socially.”
“Well, I think you’re full of it,” Robin sniffed.  “If I couldn’t get him to notice me, I know you can’t.”
Around the faculty lounge a murmur of delightfully horrified voices broke out.
Susan finished her soft drink and tossed the can into a nearby recycling bin.  “I could make Kurt ask me out if I wanted to.”
“Yeah?  Prove it.  Get him to ask you out.  I’ll bet you fifty dollars you can’t do it,” Robin taunted.  “All he’s interested in is football.”
Melissa Taylor, Susan’s best friend cleared her throat.  “How long does she have to do it?”
“Two weeks ought to be enough for an old pro like Susan.” Robin snickered as her gaze swept around the lounge.  “Would any of the rest of you like to get a piece of the action?”
