Waletta is a Louisiana native. She was born in Shreveport and raised in Bossier City. Reading has been a part of her life from a very young age.

Graduating from Texas College in Tyler, Texas, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. She also holds a Master of Public Administration from The University of Oklahoma. For over twenty years, she worked for higher education before deciding to write full time. She currently resides in Tallahassee, Florida with her husband, Donald.

Kiesha Jackson's peaceful life is about to change!

Her mother receives military orders to Afghanistan. Keisha goes to live with her grandparents in Magnolia, Florida. The new high school principal is far more concerned with protecting her career than protecting innocent students. When Kiesha unintentionally breaks the school's zero-tolerance policy, she enters the school-to-prison pipeline.

Will Keisha muddle in the injustice of it all? Or will she become a conduit for change?

A row of sparsely planted shrubs extended along the front of the house. She watched a large lizard leap from one of the front windows onto the decorative plant before knocking on the front door. After a moment, the door swung open to reveal a petite blond-haired, blue-eyed woman holding an adorable blond-haired, blue-eyed toddler boy. The child removed the sippy cup from his lips and tendered a delightful gum-filled smile. Chaos lay on the other side of the threshold—scattered toys and clothes, and a child dancing with Barney the Dinosaur blaring from the television. The clamor of screaming children reverberated out from other places in the house.

The woman wrinkled her nose before speaking. “Hello? May I help you?”

“Mrs. Vickers?”

“Yes?” The woman curled her lips.

Shirley squared her shoulders and sized her up. “My name is Shirley Jackson. I understand you had a problem with my daughter this afternoon.”

“Excuse me?” asked the woman with a confused look on her face.

The toddler threw his sippy cup on the floor.

“My daughter, Keisha, was the teenage girl you chased in your van this afternoon.”

Mrs. Vickers jaws dropped, and her face drained of color. “I …I don’t know what… she was throwing rocks.”

“No, she wasn’t.” Shirley stared her down. “You also felt the need to shout a few racial epithets out of your van window.”

Mrs. Vickers eyes grew large and bulgy. “I’m not prejudice or anything. I have black friends.” Vickers crinkled up her nose and mustered up a fake smile.

Shirley raised her hand and cut her off as she opened her mouth to speak. “Congratulations. I’m not here to argue with you. I’m here to warn you. Stay away from my daughter. Don’t say another word to her. If you see her walking down the street, don’t even speak to her. Not one word. Nothing!”

"Help me," Lucifer gasped and held out his arms toward the people behind the veil but they were just staring at him. Then he noticed the weapons in they were holding. "Please, please," he held up his hands in the universal sign of surrender, "I mean no harm. Just help me."

"It’s a trick," Persephone warned in a hiss. "He’s a liar."

Eve looked to Gabriel and the two passed a silent nod before they looked at Persephone and spoke in unison; "He never lies."

Then Eve finished their share thought, "The Truth has always been his weapon."

Those words made the sight of Lucifer Morningstar in his current desperate state even harder to take.

Eve stepped forward to stand just on the side of the veil, "Lucifer, what are you doing here?" She asked in a soft voice.

The sound of his name confused him as he tried to focus on the sight of the woman before him, "You know me? Please help me. Let me in. Please. I will do anything you want."

The fact that he did not recognize her face was understandable given his condition but still his failure brought a tinge of pain to her heart. "Be quiet and listen, we don’t have much time. If you cross the veil, if you come in here, no harm will come to you so long as you do none, but you can never leave again. You will spend all of eternity here. With us. Do you understand?"

No, he really didn’t understand her words. All he did understand was that he could not spend another night out here in the cold wasteland. He could not take another second of being hungry, thirsty, and in pain. "Please let me in." Was all he could manage to beg.

Eve stepped back from the veil, "Come in, Lucifer, come in and be welcome but do not ever betray us."

Lucifer stumbled through the veil with no time to spare before full sunrise. He fell to his knees and looked up at his savior through dazed eyes, "Thank you," he whispered with all sincerity just before he passed out at her feet.

Is magic real?

Jed doesn’t think so. Forced to live with his grandmother after the death of his parents, he’s mad at the world. He doesn’t believe in God, much less the folk magic his grandmother practices in the isolated mountains of Appalachia. He doesn’t fit in, and anger simmers within him, ready to explode.

Then Skylar arrives—a girl who’s experienced evil firsthand. Though lost in silence, she forges a connection with Jed, his grandmother, and the neighbors who come for potions and spells. Even without a voice, she embraces her new life.

Eventually Jed flees, but not for the right reasons. And his insides still burn with rage, leaving him hollow and even more unhappy—until the day he feels compelled to return home.

Beyond the Book: Romance Novels

What are the most romantic books of all time?

Well, that’s an interesting question with no set answers. Your list is probably different from mine, but here’s what I think.

1.Gone With the Wind. When Rhett grabbed Scarlett and ran up those stairs, it took my breath away. Clark Gable who played Rhett in the movie was the perfect actor for the job. His portrayal of Rhett was exactly right.

2.Wuthering Heights. Even death couldn’t separate Cathy and Heathcliff.

3.Pride and Prejudice. People all over the world like this one. You can get a good feel for English life in the 1800’s too.

4. The Sherwood Ring. This is a young adult book. I read it a long time ago and was totally enchanted by it. So much so, that my heroine in Fortuna is named Aimee Sherwood.

5.The Bronze Horseman. It’s heart wrenching, wonderful, and at the end I vowed never to read another book by Paullina Simons. That was before I found out there was a sequel.

6. Return Engagement. His father broke them up ten years ago, but when they meet by chance on a California beach, the sparks fly.

What’s that? You don’t think I should include Return Engagement because I wrote it? What can I say? It’s super romantic and makes my heart just melt. Tell me about your list. What do you think are the most romantic books ever?

It’s 1941 and the German war machine has defeated all of Europe except England. In an effort to force a surrender, the German Luftwaffe is bombing villages and cities the length of the country. As the battle rages, Britain is in desperate need to put more pilots in the air.

To free up more men a new unit is formed: The Ack Ack Girls. Teams of courageous young women will now fight in anti-aircraft stations. Excited to be part of the effort, Ava Armstrong has volunteered for one of the special teams. Her unit just happens to be located near an RAF airfield teaming with pilots. Sparks fly, and not just from artillery, when Ava crosses paths with the highly decorated and handsome Royal Airforce pilot, Chris Fairfield.

Ava put her new uniform bits away. Someone had left a flyer for a pub called the Two Roses in her stand. Skimming it as she headed toward the mess she ran into a solid body.

“Have a care, watch where you walk. You nearly trod on my foot.”

Startled, Ava looked up into a square-jawed, dark-haired pilot with a dimpled chin, who could pass for Cary Grant’s younger brother. Distracted, apologizing escaped her.

“I’d say I accept your apology had I received one.”

“Sorry, I was reading this flyer.”

He eyed her up and down. “You’re part of the new anti-aircraft branch of the ATS.”

“I am.”

He eyed the length of her again but this time a snort accompanied his comment. “I hope you can see planes better than tall men inches from you.”

The cheek of the man! She wasn’t about to let that comment slide. “Had you considered stepping out of the way when you saw me coming?”

“No, why should I? I was in this spot first. You’re lucky I don’t ask the captain to have your lot stop to salute us.”

“What cheek. Pardon me, I’m hungry and you’re boring.” Ava tucked the flyer into her jacket pocket and whispered, “Wanker” as she pushed past.

The wanker hummed White Cliffs of Dover and got in line behind her.

“Lieutenant Fairfield, it’s good to see you here. Finally on the mend?” the blonde, ATS corporal serving the food asked the wanker in a sugary voice.

“I still have the tail-end of the nasty pneumonia cough hanging on, but I believe I’ll be ready to return to my squadron this week.”

“We might see you around before then. When we have a bit of time to ourselves, my friends and I go for a pint at the Two Roses pub in the village. Come by and I’ll buy you a pint.”

“If they don’t send me off the same day as my orders come through, I’ll do that but I’ll buy.”

Ava made a note to ask what village they were near. No one had indicated so far and she was curious. She didn’t dare ask in front of the arrogant wanker Fairfield. He already thought her a clumsy goose. No need letting him think she was lost too.

She moved down the food line, pausing for a second trying to decide if she wanted the soupy mashed potatoes. Then a long, blue wool uniformed arm reached over her to take a roll, his tray clinking against hers.

“Excuse my reach but you’re taking too long and I’m ravenous.”

“You really are a wanker.”

“You wound me.” He pressed his hand to his chest. “At least I’m not a dawdler.”

He walked away with his roll before she could offer a comeback.

Briony Fairborn, a midwife in eighteenth-century Scotland, comes from a family shrouded in scandal. Left with only one friend after her mother’s death, she has little hope of gaining any others, let alone finding a husband. Instead, Briony tries to live a quiet life and avoid her neighbors’ ridicule as much as possible.

But things in Everton take a drastic turn when a storm brings foreigners to the village docks.

On the night Santiago Mendes arrives, he comes with a broken ship, a broken leg, and a broken spirit that Briony finds herself profoundly drawn to. Her scarred heart slowly starts to open, and although Briony suspects he may be hiding something, she cannot help but dream of the possibility of love.

That is, until another stranger appears in town, intent on repaying a childhood debt. A dangerously handsome stranger who shows Briony that she’s even more different than she could have imagined. And that her past is far darker than she realized.

Magic, romance, and political intrigue collide as the secrets surrounding one Scottish woman begin to unravel. Secrets that she may not be ready to face.

“Open the door! By order of His Majesty the King!” The harsh shout from the street below wrenched Santiago out of his reverie.

The sounds of merriment abruptly ended within the house, and nervous whispers took their place. Santiago peered down from the balcony at the ten quadrilheiros standing right outside the door. He’d never seen that many gathered in one place, since they typically stayed in Lisbon near the king. What could be so important for them to show up here?

“Santiago!”

The man turned to find his sister standing before him, a nervous Andreas at her side. Her entire body was trembling as though she would fall apart at a moment’s notice, and Santiago observed the way she gripped Andreas’s arm with such intensity that her knuckles had turned white.

“Are they going to arrest us? Why are the quadrilheiros here?” Lucia whimpered in a low voice, her breaths so shallow she could barely get the words out.

Santiago reached out and patted her shoulder. “Calm down, sister. We’ve done nothing wrong. I’m sure they just need information for something—”

The door creaked open below them, and Santiago motioned for Lucia to be silent.

“What’s the meaning of this?” Tomas Cabral, head servant for the Mendes family, demanded. Santiago smirked at the older gentleman’s steady voice; it was difficult for anyone to intimidate Tomas.

“Are Senhor and Senhorita Mendes in?”

Rather than answering, the man said, “Why have you come?”

The leading officer growled and said, “Senhor Mendes is to be taken into custody and his sister brought in for questioning.”

Lucia gasped. “What!”

“Shh!” Santiago insisted.

“You’re arresting Senhor Mendes? On what grounds?” Tomas didn’t sound nearly as confident anymore, but Santiago was proud of the man for not allowing the quadrilheiros into the house yet.

“Treason! Now, stand aside!”

Saturday Sample and Weekend Writing Warriors

Today I'd like to share an excerpt from my new WIP. I started writing this a few years ago, but I put it aside in favor of other manuscripts. It's time now to pick it back up. I'm struggling to find a title for it, and I don't have a blurb yet, but here's the beginning of the book. If you see anything I need to fix please say so. I've given you ten sentences and a few more to spare.

On Sunday after you finish here you can find more excerpts from a talented group of authors at www.wewriwa.blogspot.com

Last Week

Abruptly, the plane fell out of the cloud into a beautiful summer afternoon.  What the blazes!  One moment they had been fighting the cloud, the next they had left it behind as if it had never existed.  Brent rolled his shoulders to relax his stiff muscles. The electronic gauges had returned to normal, and … no! No, No, No! The engines had stalled.

“Anders!” Brent screamed.  “Anders!  Wake up!  The engines have stalled!”

Anders didn’t move.

“Help me, Holloway!” Healy cried.

Mike had either been knocked out cold, or he was dead.  Either way they didn’t have time to help him.  Desperately they fought to restart the engines.  For a moment Brent thought they’d fail, but with a high-pitched scream the engines fired.  They climbed to cruising altitude and put the plane on autopilot.  Brent ran his sleeve across his forehead to wipe the sweat away and turned to Healy, “What was that?”

“I don’t know,” Healy replied, his voice shaky.  “I’ve been flying for fifteen years, and I never saw anything like it.”  He stared out of the window as if he feared the killer cloud might still be lurking nearby.  “Mike okay?”

Brent swiveled around in his seat.  “Mike?  Mike, wake up.”

Anders moaned, but he didn’t move.

“He’s alive anyway,” Brent said.  “Better radio Miami to have ambulances and paramedics on hand.  We probably have some hurt passengers too.  I guess I’d better check.”

Healy laid a restraining hand on Brent’s arm as he started to climb out of his seat.  “Wait.  What if the cloud…”

“Comes back.”

Healy nodded, and Brent relaxed into the pilot’s seat.  Frank had a good point.  “Better call Miami,” he repeated.

Excerpt: We've picked up at the place where I left off.

Healy pushed a button on the audio panel.  “Miami International this is Transworld Flight seven niner, four.  Come in, please.”

The radio squawked, but Miami International didn’t answer.

Healy tried again.  “Miami International this is Transworld Flight seven niner four.  Come in, please.”

The radio remained silent.

“Try Miami Dade,” Brent suggested.

No answer.

Only one thing explained the lack of a response. “The cloud must have damaged the radio,” Brent said.

Healy cleared his throat. “Yeah, I guess, but ...”

Brent nodded. “I know.  We’ll try it again in a few minutes.  I guess we should make an announcement to the passengers.”

Healy gestured at the audio panel.  “Go ahead.”

Brent accessed the intercom and said, “Ladies and gentlemen this is Captain Holloway.  We’ve made it through the turbulence, and we should be landing at Miami International in ten minutes.  If you sustained any injuries, please report them to the flight attendants.  We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the turbulence.”

Healy was frowning as Brent finished his speech to the passengers.  “I wonder if we aren’t off course,” he said.

“Why would you think that?”

“For one thing we’re getting some kooky navigational readings, and for another look out the window.  I don’t see…look out the window.”

Brent looked and barely suppressed a gasp. “Wh…What is this?”

The landscape below appeared as a solid, impenetrable, green canopy bordered by a narrow ribbon of sand bars, coral reefs, and islands. Between this ribbon and the mainland, he saw many lakes, rivers, and lagoons.  He spied a few cleared areas but certainly no roads or buildings even though Miami International now lay only five minutes away.
