Meet Bartholomew, a curious, kind and sweet third grader. One day, Bartholomew wakes up and is convinced he sees a black cloud forming in the clear blue sky. "I think it might rain," he proclaims. But what happens when his family, friends, and classmates don't believe him? Will he be able to stand up to the bullies who call him names? Will he hold firm in his beliefs?

Read an Excerpt

IMAGINE the look of surprise on his mom’s face, EYES WIDE OPEN, her MOUTH and JAW nearly touching the floor. “Where do you think you’re going, young man, dressed like that?” she asked.

“To school of course,” Bart replied, quickly adding, “I think it might rain.”

“Mommy, can I wear my rain suit too?” his little sister Olivia asked.

“Not today. The sun is shining, and the weatherman said there is no rain in sight,” replied Mommy firmly.

“He’s wrong!” shouted Bartholomew in a stern and confident voice. “I think it might rain.”

“If you want to be the only silly one on the bus dressed in rain gear, go right ahead,” Mom replied, her eyes raised and a loving smile gracing her face.

Grabbing his lunch with one hand and little Olivia’s hand with the other, Bart strolled confidently down to the end of the driveway to wait for the bus.

Weston's Lady

ESTON'S LADY

Bobbi Smith

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Come One! Come All!

To Weston’s Wild West Texas Stampede

There were Cowboys and Indians, trick riding, thrills and excitement for everyone. And if Liberty Jones had anything to say about it, she would be a part of the show, too. She had demonstrated her expertise with a gun by shooting a playing card out of Reed Weston’s hand at thirty paces, but the arrogant owner of the stampede wouldn’t even give her a chance.

Disguising herself as a boy, Libby wrangled herself a job with the show, and before she knew it Reed was firing at her—in front of an audience. It seemed an emotional showdown was inevitable whenever they came together, but Libby had set her sights on Reed’s heart and she vowed she would prove her love was every bit as true as her aim.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Reed opened the door to his private wagon and stood back to let Libby enter ahead of him. She swept past him, her manner dignified and ladylike, in spite of her masculine attire.
“Have a seat.” He motioned to one of the chairs at the small table.
“No, thank you. I prefer to stand.”
“Have it your way,” he said sharply. “It seems you don’t listen well, Miss Jones. As I recall, I told you I wasn’t hiring for the show—and I especially wasn’t hiring any women.”
“I hired on as a boy,” she retorted.
Reed’s gaze raked over her. “So I see. How ingenuous of you.”
“You wouldn’t give me a chance! I’m good and I just proved it tonight! The performance would have been a disaster if I hadn’t stopped the runaway team in time! The audience thought it was a regular part of the act.”
“I could tell,” he answered, irritated by the whole situation.
“I can help you with the show,” Libby went on, trying not to sound desperate. If he fired her, she had no money, and nowhere else to go.
“I don’t need your help, Miss Jones.”
“But you wouldn’t want to disappoint the public, would you?”
“You know, you’re right. You are worth a lot of money to me. You wanted a job with Weston’s Wild West Texas Stampede—well, you’ve got one. You’re officially Weston’s Lady.”
“Know this, Reed Weston—I am worth a lot of money to you, and I’ll earn ever cent of it working for the Stampede, but that’s the only place I’m going to be Weston’s Lady.”
“We both know you’re not a lady, and I’m not sure you’re much of a woman.” Even as he said it, Reed knew it was a lie. She looked beautiful as she challenged him. Her hair was a glorious golden mane of curls about her shoulders and high color stained her cheeks.
Libby reacted without thought, swinging out at him.
Reed snared her wrist to stop her when she would have slapped him, and he jerked her to him.
In that instant, his awareness of everything except Libby faded. He drew her near, slowly, deliberately. He wanted this—no, he needed this. He needed to taste her passion.
Libby found herself frozen, held captive by the unfathomable look in Reed’s eyes.
Their lips met, and time seemed suspended as his mouth settled over hers in a possessive brand, claiming her sweetness for his own.
The Big Comb Over
THE BIG COMB OVER
J.P. Rieger
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:  Family satire; Farce; Magical realism

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Three nephews and three eccentric uncles.
---------
It’s 2050 and Robbie Elders has all but forgotten about his oddball, religious fanatic uncle, tim tim. He’s taken up the latest fad, genealogical research based solely on DNA. But Robbie’s “inconclusive” DNA results are unsettling. He crashes back to his childhood, back to his world of comic books and tim tim.
“I opt for posh and London” declares Lady Florence Stour. It’s 2019 and time for a Royal Wedding. Robbie’s uncle, Stef, is engaged to Lady Florence, a distant member of the British royal family. Stef’s Baltimore clan have been invited, but Robbie’s mom and dad can’t attend. They’ve entrusted Robbie and big brother, Doyle, to their mom’s two eccentric brothers, uncles Roy and Roland. Roy, a weathered waterman with a severe Baltimore accent, lives for Maryland blue crabs. Roland, a mildly hypochondriacal actor, lives to survive the Karens he unavoidably encounters. And then there’s Desales, Roy’s smart aleck, teenage son. He lives to prank. They’ve descended upon London. What could possibly go wrong?
Meanwhile, tim tim has been coaching Robbie on “the mission.” A silly religious fantasy according to Robbie’s atheist parents and the therapists. Or perhaps not? Things are not always as they appear in The Big Comb Over.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

Roland looked at the bottle in awe. “Fletcher’s Dry Shampoo – Hint of Almond.” He looked over the directions and ingredients on the back. “Wow! It’s gluten-free and approved by PETA, too!” He handed back the bottle, gingerly, as though it were an egg.

“Yes! So, I’ll get things started, today, but when you use it, remember to follow the instructions carefully. You have to shake the thing like a bastard.”

He pulled off the top cap and shook the bottle frantically.

“Okay, shield your eyes with your hands, Roland.”

Morris began carefully spraying the bald spot. The bottle produced several quick spurts—the initial “targeting” move. He then pulled the can back several inches and sprayed in a wider arc, slowly filling in the surrounding areas. Excess brown powder fell gently onto the cape; iron filings mixed with cinnamon.

“Yes, there we go! Success! Let me give it a brush-through and a good zhuzh!”

Morris began to carefully run the boar’s hairbrush through the mixture of hair and powdered shampoo. There was that one tricky area, so he gave it another quick blast with the aerosol can. He completed brushing and found the most optimal place for the all-important part. Something natural. Avoiding the comb-over effect was difficult. Balance . . . balance . . .

He then gave Roland’s hair a quick blast with the hair dryer. Not too much, as there was not much to dry. The shampoo had absorbed most of the hemp oil treatment. He put the dryer aside and gave Roland’s hair a two-handed, final zhuzh. He spun the chair around, dramatically, and placed a hand mirror in front of Roland’s face so that he could check out the back.

“Looky loo, Sir Roland! Nary a hint of . . . deficiency!”

Roland looked with disbelief. He no longer had that bald spot! It was gone!

“Oh dear Lord, Morris! You are a genius! Look at this! Michelangelo!” He handed back the mirror, stunned.

“Thank you, thank you!” Morris took a quick bow and rapidly turned the chair back around, causing Roland some dizziness. “Now, let me hit you with a finishing spray to hold everything in place!”

He dramatically removed the top of the hairspray aerosol and shook the can furiously. He sprayed the mist in a near random fashion near the scalp and then away from the scalp and then back toward and quickly away again—a symphony conductor of a twelve-tone sound poem.

He spun Roland around again and thrust the mirror before his face. “What do you think?!”

“Yes, yes, Morris, this is perfect! This is what I’ve been waiting for... dreaming about!"

A Word With the Author

Do you ever wish you were someone else? Who? I definitely do not want to be another person. It’s tricky enough being me. But, if I were somehow forced to be another person, I would choose Mother Theresa or perhaps Ruth Bader Ginsberg. Or maybe drumming legend Hal Blaine. (Lincoln and Washington were spoken for.)

What motor vehicle did you drive on your last birthday? My new used Prius! To me, driving my Prius on any given day is like having a birthday party. There’s a sense of serenity. Very Zen. Sadly, I had to trade in my 2002 Prius last year as it finally refused to run after nearly 21 years of nonstop partying. The $500 in trade seemed reasonable. But I rebounded with a very nice, low mileage 2015 Prius. Tongues have been wagging over the “May-December” thing, but let them.

What part of the writing process do you dread? There’s nothing worse than creating a plot synopsis. But, not just one, of course, many of them. First, giving away the plot just seems wrong. The reader needs to work the puzzle out no matter who they are. But, when submitting to multiple outlets, you quickly learn that the thousand-word synopsis that you spent days whittling down to, is either too long or too short. Publication X wants a five-hundred-word synopsis. Publication Y wants a “one pager.”  (However, publication Y provided no guidelines with respect to type size. So, why not 5-point type?)

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it? I haven’t had any sort of writer’s block yet. But at my age, 68, other blockages are more prevalent and troublesome.

Tell us about your latest release. My novel, The Big Comb Over, tells the tale of three nephews and their three eccentric uncles. The Big Comb Over is an oddball mashup of several genres: magical realism, family life satire, and the ancient comedy of manners. The two main plotlines center around nephew Robbie’s relationship with his uncles. First is his uncle, tim tim, who loves superhero comics. Tim tim believes he is on a God-driven mission to help others, with the aid of occasionally accessible superpowers. He tries to bring Robbie into the fold. The parallel plotline centers on the travels of the three nephews, Robbie, Doyle and Desales, with their whacky uncles Roy and Roland, to London England to attend a royal wedding. The trek becomes a whirlwind of comically absurd episodes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Excerpt from Book 4
Excerpt from Book Four:
With most islanders in the water, a menacing laugh halted them.
“Going somewhere?” said Arbiter Scarlon, standing next to Bolrock, the monstrous boulder creature and dark guardian leader who almost killed Sophia when she first came to Pandilone Island. Iron-masked guards stood behind them.
“Scarlon, after what the island has given you—how could you betray us?” Arbiter Nulon snapped telepathically.
“In order for all of us to have a better future, we must make a change to this place,” Arbiter Scarlon pointed out. “I am just … speeding up the process.”
Tim clenched his fists and barked, “You just want more power for yourself!”
“We are such fools for trusting you.” Arbiter Nulon lowered her head.
“You are not the only fools here,” said Arbiter Scarlon, glaring at Allen. “Boy, I thought you were smarter than this. You could’ve had so much more, but instead you decided to leave with these pathetic weaklings.”
“I never wanted anything to do with you or the new era,” Allen revealed. “I only got close to you guys to destroy Tombermon.”
“He was just pretending this whole time?” Tim whispered, staring at Sophia.
She nodded with a grin.
Arbiter Nulon stepped past her guards. “Scarlon, you can have the island. We just want to leave in peace.”
“Ah, that is very generous of you,” he said sarcastically, waving his hand to command his army to surround them. “Unfortunately, no one is leaving this place.”
“Why not?” Sophia demanded, shifting into her attack position. “You already got what you were after.”
“The reason is very simple: to ensure a long-lasting new era, there must not be any kind of rebellion,” Arbiter Scarlon explained.
“You think we will return one day and take everything back?” Allen guessed.
“The risk is far too great,” Arbiter Scarlon continued. “But if you remain here, the chance of that happening is extremely low.”
“So, what you’re telling us is staying on the island is our only option?” Allen asked.
He sneered. “Well, it’s your only living option.”
“Enough with your nonsense!” Arbiter Nulon thrust out her hand and shards of ice appeared from her palm, forming an oversized sword. “BLIZZARD BLADE!” She flung her sword over fifteen feet, snow flying everywhere.
Beyond the book: How Sweet to Receive
 “Have you ever received a personal compliment (not on your looks or writing), that was unexpected or unusual?  Would you compare those to odd, half-baked or “left-handed” compliments?”
This is an interesting topic. I’ve received more than one such comment, and I’ve laughed about it because usually the person who gave it was a student who had no idea that she had complimented me in a round about way.
 My husband gave me a “compliment” today even though he had no idea of what I’d said to him. He was watching the news this morning when I went into the family room. It was sprinkling a little outside, and I said, “I better not go out. I’m so sweet I might melt.” He reached for my hand and said, ” I don’t think you have anything to worry about.” That cracked me up. “What did I say?” he asked. I told him and we both had a good laugh about it.
Of course real compliments aren’t always given in words. Once back before I retired the faculty broke into groups to do some task. Several groups wanted me which I still feel like is a nice compliment.
I think most people feel good to be complimented so I’m not stingy with mine. When someone does something I think is good I tell them about it. You’d be surprised how their face lights up when they realize they’re appreciated.
Do you give compliments to people who you think have done something well?
When the Ocean Flies
WHEN THE OCEAN FLIES
Heather G. Marshall
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:  Women's Fiction

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
An email from a stranger tells Alison Earley that her natural father, whom she has known for only six years, has died suddenly. What begins as a short trip back to Scotland for a funeral soon becomes a journey that puts adoption, sexuality, and identity on a collision course as Alison finds herself caught between the life and family she has so carefully constructed on one continent and the family from which she was taken on another.
Shunned by her father's family, reunited with her natural mother, and reconnected with a long-lost love, Alison finds herself trying to shepherd her youngest child towards college while questioning everything she thought she knew about herself.
When her natural mother uncovers a series of letters written to Alison from the grandmother she never knew, resurrecting stories of generations of women--stories long buried by patriarchal rule--Alison realizes that she must find the courage to face and reveal the secrets of her own past. At what cost, though? And who and what will be left in the aftermath?
When the Ocean Flies explores the pain of separation and abuse, and the power of love to heal even over huge gaps in time and geographical distance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

Blue microfiche, the image yellowed. Alison perched on the edge of the chair. There was her name. Not her name, now. Not Alison. The one she started with: Jayne. Jayne Kerr. The handwriting small and neat. Mother’s name: Mary MacGilavry Kerr.

Jayne.

And Mary.

The tight signature at the bottom: her mother’s signature. She lifted one hand to the screen. Her chest clenched. She pulled her notebook from her bag, copied the name, as though she was likely to forget. Father’s name ______________.

Heat. Red cheeks in this gray basement. She wished she were stoat, or beaver, water creature, able to dive down. Cool, dark water. She held her breath. Held her tears. Who are these people? This Mary? This Jayne? Who am I? Jayne and Alison, like two separate people, with two separate lines of possibility, one body. No father. She couldn’t look at it a second longer.

She pushed the chair back, suddenly taken by the need to burst up, out, back to light and air.

A Word With the Author

1.Did you always want to be an author?

I always wrote, but when I was a child, I wanted to be a large animal vet. I didn’t think ‘author’ was on the list of options, so I just wrote for fun and concentrated on doing well in school. Somewhere in my teens, I gave up the vet notion, though I still love animals. I got my undergraduate degree in English and Journalism, still wrote, and still didn’t think ‘author’ was on the list of possibilities! It wasn’t until I started graduate school—I have an MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University of Charlotte—that I truly believed I could be an author.

2.Tell us about the publication of your first book.

My first novel, The Thorn Tree, came out ten years ago. It was absolutely amazing to hold the book in my hands. That publication gave me the confidence to be more adventurous in my writing, which resulted in When the Ocean Flies, which released in February of this year (2024). I still love The Thorn Tree, but I think When the Ocean Flies mines more challenging emotional terrain, which I wasn’t ready to do ten years ago as a writer or as a human.

3.Besides yourself, who is your favorite author in the genre you write in?

Just one? Sarah Waters. I read The Night Watch years ago, and more recently, The Paying Guests. I love her approach to writing history and to female characters, defying the times in which they live.

4.What's the best part of being an author? The worst?

Other than the writing? I love exploring new characters and worlds, which is the writing part. And it is wonderful beyond words when my work resonates with a reader—just marvelous. The worst—having to market and do things like ask for reviews.

5.What are you working on now?

A few wee things—the start to another novel which digs into the backstory of one of the minor characters in When the Ocean Flies, Mrs. MacInnes. In When the Ocean Flies, she’s the awful woman who is the grandmother of the protagonist and who is responsible for the breakup of the parents’ relationship and subsequent relinquishment of the baby. And she has her own secrets to be explored and understood.
