All We Leave Behind: Transits of Three

                          All We Leave Behind: Transits of Three

by Benjamin X. Wretlind

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Science Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Following the exodus from rising floodwaters, the surviving descendants of those who came to create a society on a planet far from Earth have struggled to rebuild within the remains of an ancient temple. Now, as disease and an unfamiliar environment threaten to destroy them yet again, everyone seems to have an opinion about what to do next.

Miriam and Tobias Page, newly married, believe there may be a possible home beyond a distant canyon. Their journey with a quarter of the population doesn’t start well and soon nature and their own humanity will conspire to end it all. Meanwhile, Miriam’s two cousins, Joel and Micah, have different ideas. Joel is convinced the best course of action is to return to the mountains they left to mine for the ore that would make a great return to Earth possible. Micah hopes to stay, learn all he can about the temple’s previous occupants, and prove both of them wrong. But soon, he and his new partner Patience realize that no option is truly safe.

As the transits of three different groups get underway, new dangers and surprises emerge from within the rainforests, mountains, and deserts of the planet…and one of those may have followed them from Earth. While a final home is a dream away, present nightmares must be dealt with first if any of them are going to survive.

A Word With the Author

Did you always want to be an author?

Absolutely! I wrote my first story when I was 8, and since then I’ve always dreamed of writing as a full time gig. I’m not there yet (still have to pay those bills), but I’m working on it from just about every angle imaginable. Even though I’ve written 12 books and published 10, I’m still constantly working toward my goal of being supported by my writing.

Tell us about the publication of your first book.

The first book I published was not the first one I finished writing. Castles was started as a short story in 2004. Someone mentioned in a writers group that I had written what sounded like the first chapter to a novel, so I worked on that for a while. It wasn’t until 7 years later that I finally published the book. It did well initially, but my marketing skills were very weak at the time. Even though the book is out there and has been republished by a small press, it’s not my favorite. Truthfully, that book made me realize I wasn’t even sure of my focus. Was I going to be a horror writer or a fantasy writer? What about science fiction or magical realism? It was actually through the writing and publication of the next two books--one dark fantasy and the other literary with a side of magical realism--that I found my true focus. That is, I consider myself a speculative fiction author who writes science fiction, dark fantasy, magical realism, and some horror. It’s not because I dislike the other genres, but because reality bites. Why not spice it up a little here and there?

Besides yourself, who is your favorite author in the genre you write in?

I have to go with Ray Bradbury. I was a fan of his the day I stole my brother’s copy of The Martian Chronicles and started reading about the “Rocket Summer.” There are no words really to describe my complete fascination with that first opening chapter. By far, my favorite book by Bradbury is Dandelion Wine, and it’s one of the few books I’ve read at least three times. Perhaps it was the description of the “Happiness Machine” I read about or the oration given about living the life we have now and not a life we can’t have. Perhaps it was the feeling of being on a street in summer in Green Town, listening to the bees buzz, the apples fall, the susurrus of the wind through brilliant leaves... Whatever it is that gave me that feeling, I know it’s important to retain. It is that feeling, in fact, that drives me forward, to look at the words on a page and want to put them in just the right order to pull readers into a story and drop them inside my own fantasy world, where gods do battle, princes and princesses run amok through ancient castles, monsters lurk in the woods at the very periphery of our vision.

What’s the best part of being an author? The worst?

The best part? Having the ability to get what’s in my head onto paper. I can’t thank my creative writing teachers enough for giving me that drive nor my parents for supplying me with a library full of books. The worst? Putting the words on paper in the order that I want them. I’m a huge planner--not a pantser--and I must have structure and organization before I even write the first sentence. I admire those who can write a novel without anything more than an idea, but for me, writing a book is a project. Therefore, I have spreadsheets, charts and a host of other tools to help me plot. That can be very distracting and can slow me down.

What are you working on now?

I am working on five things: planning the fourth book in this Transit series, The Widening Gyre; writing a new science fiction series that I’m hoping to have complete very soon; waiting on beta readers to give me their comments on a non-fiction book called Creating Atmosphere with Atmosphere: How to Use Weather as a Literary Device; writing a screenplay based on the first three books of the Transit series; and working on three workshops I will be presenting at a writer’s conference at the end of April. Like I said, I’m working on being an author from just about every angle imaginable.

EXCERPT

“How many?” Moran asked.

“Four. Just up ahead.” Tobias tightened his grip on his weapon.

“Bethany is waiting for us.”

Moran stopped and watched as the caravan slowly edged toward the right, away from immediate danger. “Wish we had more to spare.”

“So do I.” Tobias took in a calming breath and let it out slowly. The nervousness in his stomach eased up. Miriam had taught him several techniques for dealing with fear, for calming his anxiety and sharpening his mind. He would forever be grateful to be married to a counselor, a therapist, a wise wizard of the brain’s complications.

“Ready?” Moran asked.

They both walked slowly toward Bethany’s position, their eyes locked on the trees where Tobias saw the four animals.

“Eight,” Bethany whispered as they approached. “Four more in a cluster of trees to the right of the others.”

“Typical pack. Haven’t heard the growl, yet,” Moran said. “Maybe they didn’t see us.”

“Oh, they did.” Tobias pointed to the tree with the first rychat he spotted. “I swear I saw that one lick its lips.”

“Well, we’ll have to take care of that.”

Moran raised his crossbow and took aim at the one Tobias pointed out. In tandem, both Tobias and Bethany raised their own weapons.

“One on the trunk,” Tobias whispered.

Bethany responded. “The big one to the right.”

The three were silent as they steadied themselves.

Beyond the Book: Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous

 If you could spend one evening in a multi-millionaire’s home:

1. what’s the first thing you’d want to see?
2. what would you expect to find? NOT expect to find?
3. what could ruin that experience (of spending an evening in a millionaire’s home)?

1.If I ever spend the evening in multi’millionaire’s home I’d want a house tour. It would be nice to see where such people live. We’re a little more modest in my neck of the woods so it would be a nice experience to see the entire home.

2.I would expect to find expensive furnishings and fittings and the most up to date home decor. It might or might not be practical. I’m sure people with their means would have no trouble replacing anything that was ruined. There might be collections of art, books, or maybe just pictures of them hobnobbing with other famous, wealthy people. I’m not rich and famous, but I do have a vanity wall with all of my book covers on it so I’d imagine they do the same thing.If they have children maybe that had a famous artist paint their child’s portrait. Maybe they had their own portrait done too.

Truly, I wouldn’t expect a room where they could relax and kick back, a room like our family room for example. It has an old sofa that just won’t die. It’s beat up too so it really doesn’t matter if the dogs jumps up and cuddles beside me. The room has two bookcases that hold our favorite books, but it’s pretty unorganized. We have an old rocker from when I was a child, hand knitted afghans, and a set of three pictures that I love too much to ever get rid of them. I’ve had them since the 1970s. I hope I’m wrong about the wealthy not having such a space. I think everyone needs a room that’s so comforting even if it is beat up.

3.The experience would be ruined if they patronized me. That happened to me once years ago, and I’ve never forgotten it. I wouldn’t be happy if my hosts drank too much or offered me drugs. It’s not much fun to have one person monopolize the conversation either. The evening would also be ruined if I dropped a cracker in the punch bowl. I did that once. I had a cracker in my hand, and the darn thing broke in two and fell in the punch. I still have no idea what happened to make it crumple, but it was awful! My hostess was very gracious about it, but I was so embarrassed. Her house was gorgeous too. She bought an old home built in the early 1900s and remodeled it. She did an excellent job for sure.

What about you? Have you ever spent time with the rich and famous? If so, how did it go

EXCERPT

The sun rose, glinting off the ornate cornices and brass crossbeams of the Prague Opera House. A murder of crows hovered over the top of the dome; their plaintive cawing as articulate as words.

“Francesca is most angry. Somehow, she knew Christina had died.” Kang shielded his eyes against the glare. “I believe she is the loudest one with the long neck.”

Celwyn sat beside him on the rim of the fountain, shivering under the shadow of the dome   and too shocked over Christina’s death to even cry. He’d only begun to know her and her inner beauty. Later he would ask himself if he was the reason she had been killed or because the witches of Prague had a longstanding feud with vampires., The way Christina was murdered would make it worse. Too exhausted to stand, he watched the crows for a moment.

“Agreed. She has every right to be angry at Delgado and the rest of them.”

The magician couldn’t help glancing across the street to the Vltava River running swift and dark through the city. In the last few hours, he had made sure Delgado would never hurt someone he loved again; but in the end, he had been too late to save Christina.

The sun rose higher, spreading light over the city. The aroma of cooking fires reached them as the residents prepared to greet the day, and a forlorn siren wailed in the distance, competing with the cawing of the crows who circled, pecking at the magically enhanced net dangling from the spire.

Jane Austen Time Traveler

Jane Austen Time Traveler

by Rachel Dacus

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Sci-Fi
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Lonely Regency romance writer travels to the future, meets her fans, dips into a pearly swimming pool, and falls for its owner. Can she ever go home again…

If Jane Austen’s novels had never ever existed, would we have rom-com movies and women’s fiction? But the young writer is discouraged by a publisher’s rejection and ready to give up writing. And an unwelcome marriage proposal she has rashly accepted spells her doom.

Someone must save history and Jane Austen! When a stranger calls and claims to be an interested publisher, a desperate Jane agrees to go with him to his office. That office turns out to be in the future. And it's not an office, but a bookstore in southern California in 2024 where fans of Jane Austen gather every month to discuss her works.

Jane greets the Jane Austen Superfan Club, only to find that superfans can be super picky. Discouraged by their critiques, Jane wants different adventures. Even deadly, dangerous ones. And oh, yes! Romantic ones.

Her “publisher” had hoped to inspire Jane’s writing by showing her a book club devoted to her writing. But when she meets a tall, handsome superfan, Jane decides to chart her own course. She disappears with her new friend, and history may have to save itself …

The wooden bench had caught a beam of afternoon light on its polished wood slats. She paced in front of it until the idea became clear. Living and writing in two worlds. Jane’s practical mind made two lists.

The Good Aspects of Life in 2024.

Writing with magical devices to transport your thoughts onto a page.

Self-filling pens.

Odd-looking people who might inspire characters.

The marvels: an aquarium, sex, a pearly swimming pool.

Wearing hardly any clothing.

A club that gathers to discuss all your books!

To write about a fast, buzzing world, where people barely speak for half an hour together. (Note that also as one of this era’s detriments.)

The Good Aspects of Life in 1802:

Quiet days at home, days devoid of machinery and speed.

A long conversation with a dear sister, or a favorite aunt.

A visit that could stretch on into twilight, when the candles were lit.

Meals like a party around a table.

To write a sentence that went on almost as long as a dinner party.

No one rushing anywhere, except for messengers galloping with mail.

How easy to write in her time, when people knew each other for all their lives, lived in the village together all their lives and for generations.

Fields and forests, great estates, and humble homes.

Quiet always within reach. Just step outside or close a door.

But could she even spend a day away from Will?

by The Seafarer's Bride

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Viking Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A year ago, Magnus Tolljursson helped repel a treacherous attack from his father’s enemies, and discovered he carries the berserker’s seed of madness. Now he must sail to the settlement from whence those attackers came, and fulfill a promise to a friend. He doesn’t know what he’ll find in Husavik and never suspects he may lose his heart.

In her father’s absence, Embra Fritisson has been engaged in a desperate battle to keep leadership of the settlement. When Magnus arrives saying her father is dead, she fears her unstable family will splinter into factions and destroy one another. She must retain control, but how can she hope to keep her head while falling in love with the enemy?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
A fraught moment ensued. Embra had parted her lips to say, “I am in charge,” when an interruption occurred. Vanja came charging into the hall, pushing folks out of the way, a sword in her hand.
Ach, by Freya’s heart, this was just what Embra needed.
Vanja looked—insane. Her fair hair had escaped its plaits and her eyes were wild. She came with words pouring from her.
“Where is he? Where is he?” Focusing on Magnus Tolljursson the way a wounded cat might focus on its rival, she demanded, “Are you the one? The one who’s brought word of my father?”
Magnus Tolljursson stared, as did the handful of men he’d brought up from the boat with him.
He sounded calm though when he replied, “I am.”
“Where is he?” Vanja repeated and waved her weapon in Magnus Tolljursson’s face. Any man might be expected to back off. He did not, but held up his hands, empty of weapons.
Perhaps he did have balls the size of Odin’s head.
“Dead.” Magnus shot one inquiring look at Embra.
“My sis—” she began, only to have Vanja speak over her.
“Who killed him?” It was a howl of pain. “You?” again she waved the sword. “Was it you?”
Still, he did not step back though all of his men had their hands on their weapons, and had stepped up behind him.
Beside Embra, Runi chuckled.
“He died in battle on our shore, in Sorvagur.”
“By whose hand?”
“Does it matter?” Magnus spoke to Vanja as directly as she spoke to him, disregarding the pain that infused her voice. “Men who come to our shores seeking to defeat us must be prepared to die.”
Vanja blinked at him. “My brother, Gunnar?”
“He too breathed his last at Sorvagur.”
“Ach, by Tyr’s whiskers! I will avenge them. I swear to avenge them.”
Magnus’s men stirred and he narrowed his eyes, giving Vanja a dangerous look. “Mistress,” he bowed slightly, “as you wish.”
“Did you kill them?” She waved her sword in a wild arc. “Need I slay you?”
“I represent Sorvagur here. If you have scores to settle with anyone there, you must take it up with me.”
Ah, Embra thought upon a thrill of rare admiration. He knew not of what he spoke. No one in his right mind would take Vanja on. She was by turns heedless, cunning and treacherous.
A worthy daughter, in fact, of Friti Gunnarsson.
The Low Road
                                                                The Low Road
by Jo A Hiestand
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   British mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Former police detective Michael McLaren arrives in Scotland, ready to immerse himself in the fun of the Highland Games and to enjoy a holiday with Melanie. But the old saying of plans oft going awry rears its ugly head: Simon Shaw, a member of McLaren's folk group, dies. Murdered a year to the day following his uncle's death.
McLaren is determined to find out who killed Simon. Needing justice for his friend is only half of his incentive. He also needs to appease his guilt for suggesting the group sing there in the first place.
As McLaren becomes immersed in the investigation, he wonders if the two deaths are linked, or have to do with the family or their clan. Perhaps Simon's former wife killed him, bent on revenge more powerful than mere divorce. Or was the killing tied to an old hunt for diamonds? After all, diamonds aren't only a girl's best friend. Sometimes they birth greed and murder. And entrap the innocent.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

The last vestiges of sunset touched the sky, the violet and indigo hues slowly turning to a somber grey that would soon melt into the thickening gloom. Dusk was yielding to the darkness that brought out night creatures and their sounds, but the piper seemed apart from that, like Melanie's blend of the Mystical and Celtic worlds. What is he doing here and where is he now? For the music again had shifted. It now came from behind the house, apparently on the road.

McLaren tapped on his mobile phone's torch app and played the beam several feet ahead as he jogged toward the sound. The grass brushed the sides of his boots in dry, wispy sighs. Dew would anoint the lawn, yews, and the cars come morning, but at this hour it was an easy tramp without the entanglement of sodden grass. It's just as well, he thought as he approached the verge of the road. I can do without damp boots and jeans.

As he left the lawn and stepped onto the gravel edge of the road, the music stopped. Not abruptly, as if someone had hit the pause button on a recording. It groaned and lost its voice. Like a last gasp, the way bagpipe music ended with the air leaving the bag. The silence was nearly overwhelming after the lengthy skirl he had heard. The timing was strange too, as if the crunch of his boots on the chert had signaled to the piper that McLaren was there to find him.

My Review:

 In this classic, traditional mystery, Ms. Hiestand takes her hero McLaren back to his roots in Scotland where we meet his grandfather and his uncle. He also takes his new lady love with him to meet his family. He and and his band are participating in the Highland Games. Unfortunately, murder seems to follow McLaren wherever he goes. One of his band members is found dead in the exact same place as his uncle was last year. McLaren is sure the two cases are related, and he decides to begin with the cold case. He collects many clues during his investigation. So many that it's difficult to figure out the murderer's identity.

The book is very atmospheric. It feels exactly how I think Scotland would be. It's also clear and easy to read. This is a book in a series, but it could easily be read as a stand alone work. I enjoyed the story, and if you like brooding heroes, Scottish Highlands, and mysteries I think this book is your cup of tea.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Jo A. Hiestand grew up on regular doses of music, books, and Girl Scout camping. She gravitated toward writing in her post-high school years and finally did something sensible about it, graduating from Webster University with a BA degree in English and departmental honors. She writes a British mystery series (the McLaren Mysteries)—of which three books have garnered the prestigious N.N. Light’s Book Heaven ‘Best Mystery Novel’ three years straight. She also writes a Missouri-based cozy mystery series (The Cookies & Kilts Mysteries, of which "A Trifling Murder" is the second book) that is grounded in places associated with her camping haunts. The camping is a thing of the past, for the most part, but the music stayed with her in the form of playing guitar and harpsichord, and singing in a folk group. Jo carves jack o’ lanterns badly and sings loudly. She loves barbecue sauce and ice cream (separately, not together), kilts (especially if men wear them), clouds and stormy skies, and the music of G.F. Handel. You can usually find her pulling mystery plots out of scenery—whether from photographs or the real thing.
