The Key to All Things

 The Key to All Things

by Cindy Lynn Speer

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Fantasy/Adventure/Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Every day, Lady Avriel hears the bards sing about the greatest love story of all times, a heartbreaking romance between a human nobleman, Captain Edward de Vere, and the beautiful Queen of the Fae, who shattered his heart when she abandoned him to accept her throne. Avriel secretly longs for the sad and romantic captain as she works as a double agent, serving at both human and fae courts to keep the peace between the two kingdoms.

But for three hours every night she remembers a completely different world, where the greatest love story is a lie, and Edward belongs to her. She believes this reality to be the true one, even if no one else does. The world has fallen under a spell, and it is up to Avriel to find its source and undo it.

To set things right, Avriel must face the all-powerful Elder Fae and confront the darkest powers that rule her destiny – only to learn that if she proceeds, her actions will bring chaos and open her kingdom to destruction. Is this a choice she is willing to make to bring her love back?

EXCERPT

I am the queen of sometimes. Sometimes I am a wife. Sometimes I am a spy. It just depends on what time of day you catch me.

There is a story that sits in the back of my head, and I remind myself of it every time I lie down to sleep. It is the story that recounts everything I had, and everything I lost. It is not the story you know, about war and love. You believe in the tale of Catherine of the Willows, a part fae who fell in love with Edward de Vere, Captain of the King’s Guards. You al-ready are nodding, you know the story like you know your own face in the mirror. It’s been told to you thousands of times. Catherine and Edward fell in love. They married despite their love being forbidden. And then, when the story should have ended with everyone having their happily ever after, the unthinkable happened. Catherine was chosen to take the fae throne. And with that, came a terrible decision. She could keep her mundane life, her marriage, or she could sacrifice her identity and become the Sapphire Queen of the Fae.

She sacrificed. And as she rose, Edward fell. Tossed aside, he became

the tragic hero.

Here is the truth, if you would have it. There were three men who were like brothers: an inventor, a pirate, a romantic; warriors all. And there was a woman, Avriel, neither all fae nor all human, and she lived between the worlds of the human and fae courts. Avriel was the one who enchanted Edward, Avriel was the one he wed, and everything should have been the happily ever after of the stories: flowers and sunshine and perfection.

So why don’t you remember it this way? I don’t know. No one remembers. They know of these three men – Edward de Vere, and Merrick d’Marison, and Stephan d’Valerian, and all the things they did. They sometimes remember the woman – me, Avriel, now a background character in a much grander story. But no one remembers the truth. In one brief moment everything’s changed, and I do not know how, or why.

All I know is that Edward, my husband and the love of my life, does not remember who I am. But that is not as bad as it would seem. For, you see, except for three blessed hours each day, from nine until midnight, I don’t remember him, either. Or, to be more precise, I don’t remember that he was once mine. He’s just an attractive soldier who once was the Captain of the King’s Guard but now fell from grace, and all I can do is hide in the shadows and long for him.

Each time the clock chimes nine, I remember what it was like to taste his kisses, to have him lean close and whisper in my ear, to fight by his side. I remember what it was like to be powerful and in control of my destiny, to have friends who respected me.

It used to hurt, the remembering. At first it would paralyze me. I used to think I was mad. I would sit in my room and stare at the wall, wondering what to do. There was no one to talk to, to turn to. Everyone had been taken from me.

Oh, I cannot lie. It still does hurt. But I force it away, and instead I consider the day behind me, and the day ahead of me, and I take out some paper and write down some notes. They are different, depending on what needs to be accomplished. I place each note where I will see it in the morning, out of sight of the mirror, because there is a fae courtier who controls me, who can see through mirrors, and who would not allow me to proceed.

One step at a time. We will solve this. I will have my life back.

A Word From the Author:

1.Did you always want to be an author?

Since the age of thirteen, I think.  I don’t remember a time when I was not telling stories, though, I remember telling myself stories to lull me to sleep, I remember making up stories as I sat in my sandbox as a little girl.  I remember dearly wanting She-Ra and He-Man dolls because I realized I could use them to create more stories.  But I was thirteen when I realized I could write them, and everything since then as been little realizations of what I can do.  I read Neil Gaiman and realized that I could write the kind of comics that were inside my head, I recently realized how I could write sword fighting scenes that would tell the story and not just be an excuse for action.

2.Tell us about the publication of your first book.

The first book I published was actually the second book I wrote, Blue Moon.  I was at my desk at the library I worked in, listening to the radio while I was putting metal security strips in books, and they were talking about a blue moon sale.  I kept thinking about the book, as I drove, as I tried to sleep, and wrote fairly steadily on it.  I submitted it to Zumaya Otherworlds and they accepted it…I was so excited.  As I waited for publication I made friends with the awesome Deena Fisher, who had published some of my other short stories, and she made the cover for me – I thought it was lovely of her, and have never forgotten either her or Liz Burton’s belief in me.

3.Besides yourself, who is your favorite author in the genre you write in?

I think that I have a lot of affinity for Patricia Briggs.  She is amazing – I adore everything she writes, and like me, she dabbles in high fantasy adventure and paranormal mystery.

4.What's the best part of being an author? The worst?

I was going to say writing your stories down and seeing the book.  Because the moment you open the box and you see your book, see the cover – it is pretty wonderful.  But I admit I really love it when I hear that people loved my book and want more.  It’s not really vanity?  It’s more like relief.  Like, it was worth all the hard work. The people at Dragonwell worked so hard and were so amazing, I feel like I did not let them down.  Or my readers down.  The worst part is the work life balance.  There is so much to do, and I never, ever feel like I do enough.

5.What are you working on now?

A couple of things.  I am working back and forth on a set of mysteries set outside a national park – there’s a motel for seelie and unseelie fae there – or a story about a godmother in the 1960’s who is healing from some horrors of the past, when she gets pulled into solving a mystery.  (I love mixing fantasy and mystery.)

Beyond the Book: Cowgirls and Horses

In honor of my Rest Thy Head heroine Peyton O'Malley, I'm doing a series on American cowgirls. Peyton had never ridden a horse until she came to Rest Thy Head, but she loved it.  Here's her horse whose name is Reggie.

All cowgirls needed a horse, so here's two famous cowgirls with their horses.

Dale Evans had a horse named Buttermilk. Buttermilk was a buckskin quarter horse who was actually faster than Roy Roger's Trigger.  (Picture: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=2030)

This last horse belonged to Connie Douglas Reeves who was thrown from Dr. Pepper when she was 101 years old. The horse was 28. She said she was glad he had remained so spirited. Connie was the first woman admitted to law school in Texas, but she had to drop out because of the Depression. She became a riding instructor, and spent the rest of her life around horses. Dr. Pepper looks a lot like Peyton's horse Reggie.  (Picture: https://stargazermercantile.com/an-american-cowgirl-connie-douglas-reeves/

If you're interested in reading Rest Thy Head, it's on sale for only .99 at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. I'd love for you to read it.

First Meeting

Remember when you first met that special someone? Here's how Peyton met Jake.

She entered the barn, a big white structure with a center aisle and stalls on either side. Just inside the door she saw a dark-haired man dressed in jeans and a long-sleeved, plaid shirt brushing a pretty chestnut mare.

“Hi,” she called.

The man half turned toward her; wow, he had blue eyes to die for. The blue was so intense that it reminded her of a blue diamond she’d seen at the jewelry store. Oh, and look at those shoulders. If there was one thing she loved, it was a pair of nice shoulders. Yummy. He was just yummy.

“Yeah?” he asked, his voice abrupt and snappy.

“I’m Peyton O’Malley. I’m supposed to meet Patrick for a ride.”

“He isn’t here yet. You can sit on the bench under that tree outside and wait for him there.”

Instead of leaving the barn, Peyton stepped toward the man. “What a beautiful ... horse.”

The man quickly averted his face, but Peyton had seen the dreadful red scars that covered the entire left side of his face. They looked like burns. “I told you to wait outside,” he growled, scowling at her with the good side of his face. “Get moving.”

Dream Lover

Dream Lover
by Nancy Fraser
 “Dream Lover” as well as the four previous novellas in the Golden Decade of Rock and Roll Series will be on sale for $0.99 during the tour.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Haley Parker lost her academic scholarship when she quit school to care for her dying mother. Now, eager to return to her studies, she must find the perfect job that will allow her the freedom to attend evening classes.
Her best friend Chloe teaches at one of Boston’s finest private schools, a job Haley had once hoped would be hers. When Chloe snags Haley a referral for a position as nanny to high-powered attorney, Eric Garrison’s, two young children, Haley looks forward to taking on the task.
Eric finds himself drawn to the intelligent and loving young woman who has bewitched his children. It’s not long before he’s re-thinking his plan to avoid romantic entanglements. On a family vacation to Paris, he finds it impossible to resist the lovely, yet innocent Haley.
Haley willingly gives up her innocence for a chance to make love with Eric, even though she realizes it will change their professional relationship forever.
EXCERPT:
“So, Miss Parker, what do you think of Paris?”
Haley rolled over in the big bed and wrapped her arms around Eric’s waist, drawing him closer. “I think the Eiffel Tower is compensating for something.”
“Perhaps, we could explore the possibility of what that might be. Comme vous le voulez.”
She relaxed back in Eric’s embrace and felt the wet press of his lips to hers, the scratchiness of his tongue... the...
She awoke with a start. Benji, the Garrison’s cat, sat squarely in the middle of her chest, his nose pressed against her cheek. Her heart pounded, the remnants of her dream coming back to her in embarrassing Technicolor. What in heaven’s name would have possessed her to dream about her employer in such an unusual and thoroughly inappropriate way?
Surely, she wasn’t attracted to the workaholic, albeit handsome, attorney. No, it must have been the few words of French he’d uttered at dinner prompting such a ridiculous dream. Haley mentally discarded any thought of herself and Eric Garrison.
She gave the cat a shove. “Get down, you pesky ball of fur.”
Benji jumped lazily to the floor, his loud hiss speaking volumes about his displeasure at being rousted from the bed.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Like most authors, Nancy Fraser began writing at an early age, usually on the walls and with crayons or, heaven forbid, permanent markers. Her love of writing often made her the English teacher’s pet, which, of course, resulted in a whole lot of teasing. Still, it was worth it.
When not writing (which is almost never), Nancy dotes on her five beautiful grandchildren and looks forward to traveling and reading when time permits. Nancy lives in Atlantic Canada where she enjoys the relaxed pace and colorful people. She invites you to visit her website, her blog, and follow her on Twitter. Saturday Sample: Her Kind of Man
Welcome to Saturday Sample. My excerpt today is from Her Kind of Man which was a featured read on the eReader Cafe on Thanksgiving Day. The book is on sale for .99. In this excerpt my hero has a hard time justifying his decision to invite Kara Cochrane to dinner. Bobby is my hero's brother, and the reason he's upset is because Kara is trying to make her ex-fiance jealous.
"Are you out of your mind?"
Ross winced at his brother's reaction. He pushed his plate away and drained his coffee cup. "Great breakfast, Mom."
“You know she only agreed to go out with you to spite Brandon and Kelly," Bobby persisted. "Are you looking to get your heart broken? I've never liked her. She ignored you all through high school, and now she's using you to make Brandon jealous. Why are you playing along?"
"Mind your own business, Bobby. I'm a grown man and can take care of myself. I know what I'm doing."
Bobby shook his head. "No you don't. You're going to lose your head over a woman who doesn't give a crap about you. And never has."
"Let it alone, okay? I want to go out with her."
Bobby slammed his coffee cup onto the kitchen table and sloshed coffee everywhere. “You’re as stubborn as a mule, so I might as well shut up, but don’t let her hurt you, Ross. You deserve better.”
