Secret Lady

Secret Lady
by Beth Trissel

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE  New Adult, Time Travel, Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

At Lavender House, Evie McIntyre is haunted by the whispers from her bedroom closet. Be-fore she can make sense of their murmurs, the house "warbles" between times and transports her to the Civil War. Past and present have blended, and Evie wishes she'd paid more attention to history. Especially since former Confederate officer, Jack Ramsey, could use a heads up.

Torn between opposing forces, Jack struggles to defend the valley and people he loves. Meet-ing Evie turns his already tumultuous world upside down. Will solving the mystery of the whispers return her home, and will the handsome scout be by her side?

Against the background of Sheridan's Burning of the Shenandoah Valley, Jack and Evie fight to save their friends and themselves – or is history carved in stone?

EXCERPT:

What had happened to the room?

Nothing in the parlor was as it had been a short while ago. Furnishings suited to a monastery had
displaced the frou-frou décor. Simple wooden chairs, stools, and a plain couch were arranged in a circle. A small table supported a large black book, possibly the Bible. Discarded knitting lay on a side table. A spinning wheel sat in one corner.

There were no frills anywhere. No lavender sprigged wallpaper or lacy valentines, or anything she
remembered. Her grandmother’s cherished things were gone. Everything had changed, and yet, the layout of the room was the same.

Was she lost in a dream, or had she stepped into a parallel universe? That sometimes happened…in Doctor Who, not her world.

Oh, my,” she gulped, and blindly reached out to steady herself against the back of a chair. “Not what I was expecting.”

“Nor are you.” The man called Jack returned the match tin to his pouch and studied her by the flickering light, his sandy brows arching under the broad brim.

“Whew.” He thumbed his hat back. “You’re nothing like Hettie Wenger.”

“Not in this life,” she said in a bare whisper, realization nagging at her.

“Did you have another?”

She nodded, gazing into the most glorious greenish-brown eyes, like sun-dappled trees. Wham.
Lightning bolt impact.

My Review:

I always enjoy time travel novels, and this one was no exception. Evie McIntyre is a modern girl working with her grandmother at Lavender House, a Victoria property that survived Union general Sheridan’s burning back during the Civil War. Her biggest problem is that whispers and murmurs are coming from the closet in her room, and she’s scared to death. One night the house ‘warbles’ between times and transports her back to the Civil War era where former Confederate office Jack Ramsey befriends her. Almost immediately there is a strong connection between them. Now all Evie has to do is figure out how to help the family currently living in Lavender House and get Jack safely to 2019.

The characters in the book are sympathetic and likeable. I especially liked Jack because he showed good depth of character due to his conflict over his own role in the war. The plot was well thought out, and logically reached its conclusion. The pacing was just right. The book is an easy read. I read the whole thing in half a day.

If you believe in soul mates, true love, and destiny you’re sure to enjoy this one. I’d give it 4 out of 5 stars.

The Hunter's Moon

The Hunter's Moon (Book 1--Secret Warrior Series)
by Beth Trissel

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: YA Fantasy  Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Seventeen year old Morgan Daniel has been in the witness protection program most of her life. But The Panteras have caught up with her and her younger brother. Her car is totaled, she's hurt, and the street gang is closing in when wolves with glowing eyes appear out of nowhere and chase away the killers.

Then a very cute guy who handles a bow like Robin Hood emerges from the woods and takes them to safety at his fortress-like home. And that's just the first sign that Morgan and her brother have entered a hidden world filled with secrets.

EXCERPT

Oh, no. Was the wolf hit? Morgan prayed not. She sensed him trying to protect them, and couldn’t imagine why, or why he seemed like ‘her wolf’.

Cries, like the shrieks of a panther, carried through the trees. A chill crawled down her spine. Were the woods filled with creatures she thought long gone from these mountains?

More wolfish snarls erupted and snapping, tearing. Good. He lived. She nudged Jimmy. “Can you see anything?”

He craned his head around the rocks. “Not through the smoke and fog.”

Eerie howls rose from the surrounding woodland on every side. A whole pack must be gathering. Morgan wasn’t certain whether to be frightened, fascinated, or hopeful of rescue. Still light-headed, not sure she even saw clearly, she watched the black wolf reappear; with him, a great white wolf whose green eyes shone like starlight. The most extraordinary yet. Together, the two loped after the brown and gray one. Judging by the high-pitched calls, there were more wolves out there. And panthers, or were they mountain lions?

Snarls, growls, and the shrieks of enraged felines ripped through the smoky shroud. The pack wasn’t after her and Jimmy. Not now, anyway.

Traitor's Curse

If you came for Fashionista Friday, scroll on down, but why not enjoy this post first?

TRAITOR'S CURSE
by Beth Trissel

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Halifax, North Carolina, 1783.
Captain Stuart Monroe returns home from the Revolutionary War to find Thornton Hall threatened by a peacetime foe: debt. He knows the location of a treasure amassed to pay for the capture of Benedict Arnold that would restore his manor to its former glory. The catch, it's hidden in the graveyard, and coveted by old enemies.
Hettie Fairfax inherited the Sight from her Cherokee ancestors, and her otherworldly visitors warn her, and Stuart, away from the buried treasure. Half-dead from fever, she delivers a message: the treasure is cursed. But will he believe a girl half out of her mind with illness? Even when a very real enemy attempts to poison her? Stuart soon wants to marry Hettie, but she fears her "odd ways" will blemish his reputation. The spirits have their own agenda, however, and the battle against darkness tests everything the couple holds dear, including their love for each other.
Stuart soon wants to marry Hettie, but she fears her "odd ways" will blemish his reputation. The spirits have their own agenda, however, and the bat“Turn back. A man watches you.”
Again, the warning carried from the unseen source.
What man, and how did she know Stuart was observed? He could barely discern anything.
“Who are you? Show yourself.” Uneasiness lent indignation to his demand.
Through the haze, he spotted the figure of a young female dressed all in white. A death shroud?
Pray God, it wasn’t. His gut knotted, and he stood staring at her.
Ethereal, ghostly, she seemed to float toward him, but must have walked.
Must have.
A cold shiver stood the hair on the back of his neck on end. Was she flesh and blood, or spirit? Had she crossed the divide between the two worlds?
He scarcely dared to breathe.
Still, he stood rooted to the trail. And not only from fright. Fascination. Despite fear of being haunted, an aura about her drew him.
He waited, every muscle taut, poised betwixt heaven and earth, the scent of crumbling leaves in his nose. At least, that was real.
Whiteness swirling around her, she neared.
Then he spotted it, an ivory coverlet draped over her head and around her slender shoulders pinched together in front with pale fingers.
No shroud.
The blanket reached to her ankles and trailed behind along the ground. Mist muted the flowers stitched into the cloth. This accounted for him not spotting her sooner. She’d blended in with the vapor.
MY REVIEW:
I love history. In fact, I taught history for thirty-five years. One of my favorite time periods is the Revolutionary War era so Traitor’s Curse which is set in the years following the Revolution sounded right up my alley. The book also had a touch of the paranormal, which I also like.
As a whole, I’d have to say I enjoyed the book. The author created some strong and memorable characters that I liked very much. She included details of life in the eighteenth century, and I liked them too.
The hero and heroine had their challenges, though. During this time period, extraordinary abilities were viewed in a negative fashion, and even the hero questioned the heroine’s abilities.
The plot was well-developed and kept my attention from start to finish. I didn’t see any inconsistencies or flaws.
If you like historical romance with maybe a little paranormal thrown in, you’ll enjoy Traitor’s Curse. 5 of 5 stars
