EXCERPT 

 

Neunbar Lodge was constructed from large cedar logs and had a rustic feel. From the driveway it looked huge. It was three storeys tall, covered in floor to ceiling window glass in an A-frame style reminiscent, to the visitors, of their Swiss homeland. It advertised twenty comfortable suites for guests and had a Michelin Star chef in charge of its food services. It was not cheap. It was a remote getaway in the heart of the “Great Bear Rainforest.” It was the ultimate luxury escape. 

 

The property was immense, nearly eighty acres, spreading along both sides of the upper Bella Coola River. A neatly tended drive led off from the highway, under a gateway arch carved from cedar poles, with images of bears prominently displayed. A curious mixture of European and Nuxalk designs marked out the gateway. As the name implied, there were, if you counted, nine bear figures in all, ranging from the giant grizzly figure in the Nuxalk style on the crosspiece to the two families of bears on the side poles, one carved in a life-like style by a European master carver, and one side carved and painted in Nuxalk traditional designs and colours. The gateway arch and its art had become a local tourist attraction, and travellers on the highway regularly stopped for a photo.
