The Congressman's Wife

The Congressman's Wife
by Arie Pavlou & Charlene Keel

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Contemporary Women's Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

All Eden Bancroft has ever been to her high-profile politician husband is a trophy wife, born and bred for the part.  She believes she has no choice but to play it—until she meets a talented chef and restaurant heir who shows her the real meaning of love.
The more her husband uses and belittles her, the more deeply Eden falls for Kaleb.  Even with Mitchell’s congressional campaign in full swing, the lovers manage to find brief stolen moments together. When her husband is wounded by a bullet from an angry lobbyist, Eden must stay by his side.  What she learns can set her free, if she has the courage to take a stand.
“The beautiful wife of a would-be congressman falls for a sexy chef in this steamy debut novel . . . A spicy outing that should feed readers’ hunger for romance.”
—Kirkus Reviews
“The Congressman’s Wife is a thrilling roller-coaster ride from beginning to end: fast-paced, sizzling with sex, yet constantly balanced on the edge of disaster . . . This is unquestionably one of the best books I have read . . .”
—ReadersFavorite.com

EXCERPT:

Kaleb had been standing close enough to hear it all—not that he’d intended to eavesdrop.  He only wanted to try and give her some kind of signal—to beg, if necessary—to get a moment alone with her.  When he heard her husband’s caustic words, Kaleb wanted to punch him.  He wanted to take Eden’s hand and lead her out of there, away from the complete jackass her husband seemed to be.

Instead, he followed her into the room where coats were checked for the evening.  The maid who’d taken them was nowhere about, and Eden was digging through the racks when Kaleb walked in.  She looked up, surprised.

“We need to talk about it,” he said.

“About what?”  She found her wrap and Mitchell’s Brooks Brothers overcoat, draped them over one arm and turned to face him.

“About this thing between us.”

“That’s not very original.”

“I feel it and I know you feel it.”

“Look, I’m very flattered,” she began but he cut her off.

“We don’t have much time.”  He moved closer, aching to touch her.  “Your husband will come looking for you any minute.  Just tell me when and where I can see you again.  Alone.”

“You can’t,” she said.  “My husband is running for congress.  It’s . . . it would be impossible.”

“No,” he insisted.  “I don’t know why we met or how we’re going to pull this off but I do know one thing.”  He was speaking so softly now that she had to move closer to hear him.

“What?” she asked, her lips just inches from his own.  They were of equal height and he could see how well, how perfectly, they would fit together.

“I won’t give up.  I want to make love to you.”

“At least once?” she countered.

He moved closer still.  “Once will never be enough for us.  You know that, too.”

She sighed, lightly, and her sweet breath lingered on his cheek for a moment before she moved away and broke the spell.

“My husband is waiting for me,” she said.  “You’re a little crazy, you know?  You need to forget about this.  I’m married.  I have kids.  I don’t have time for an affair.”

“Have lunch with me.”

“Sorry—too busy.”

“Just let me talk to you.  Give me two hours—maybe over the weekend.  Then if you never want to hear from me again, that’ll be it.  I swear.”

She didn’t say anything for a moment, as if she was considering it.  “As intriguing as that sounds, I’m afraid it’s impossible.  I’m going to the season opening at the Village Resort up in Hunter this weekend, with my best friend.”

“Your husband going too?” Kaleb persisted.

“No.  He has a previous engagement.  Not that it’s any of your business.”

He opened his mouth to answer but Mitchell’s voice rang out in the foyer.  “Edie—let’s go.  Where are you?”

She flashed Kaleb a warning look and called out softly, “Coming, Mitchell.”  Then she left, quickly, before her husband could see Kaleb standing in the shadows.

MY REVIEW

I thought the book was very well written. It was fast paced and filled with all the angst the situation called for.  It took me awhile to warm up to the male main character. Before he had any knowledge of the situation between the congressman and his wife he sets out to charm her and have her for himself. I thought the other characters were nicely done. The villain in the piece was a truly terrible man whom I disliked intensely. Of course it takes good writing to get such an emotional reaction. I thought the political parts of the book were well done too. They didn't overwhelm at all, but they did show you the congressman's character. The sex scenes were open door. All in all I'd give it 4 stars.

Saturday Sample: The Captain and the Cheerleader

Blurb:
Susan English can’t stand Robin Lanford! She’s so full of herself she irritates everyone on the faculty of Fairfield High. When Robin bets Susan fifty dollars that she can’t get a date with Kurt Deveraux, the head football coach, Susan jumps at the chance to put the little heifer in her place. She had no idea that teaching Robin a lesson would irrevocably change her life, strain treasured friendships, and throw two families into chaos.

We know the Susan won her bet with Robin when Kurt asked her to go to a party with him. Unfortunately, they drank too much and ended up sleeping together which didn't please Susan at all. She begged Kurt to take her home, and in today's excerpt they've just reached Susan's house..

EXCERPT:
She didn’t get far; Kurt grabbed her arm and prevented her from leaving the car. “I’m coming in with you. We have to talk about what happened last night.”

“No, we don’t.”

“Yes, we do.”

Kurt let go of her and got out of the car. Short of screaming or running away, there was no way to stop him so she might as well get it over with as quick as she could. He followed her down the walk and unlocked the door for her when he saw how much her hands were shaking.

We know that Susan won her bet with Robin when Kurt invited her to go to a party with him. Last week they had just left for their party. I've skipped some paragraphs, and in today's excerpt they've arrived at the party.

Their host saw them come in and ran to greet them. “Kurt, my friend, welcome. Who is this lovely lady on your arm?”

“Jose Mendoza, meet Susan English.”

Mendoza took Susan’s hand and kissed it. “You are far too beautiful to waste yourself on him, Miss
English.” Mendoza dug Kurt in the ribs with his elbow and laughed with evident delight.

“Get out,” Kurt kidded. He put his arm around her and drew her close.

Susan’s knees turned to water the minute their bodies met; He has muscles in places I don’t have places.

We know that Susan won her bet with Robin when Kurt invited her to go to a party with him. Last week he told her he didn't drink because he wanted to set a good example for the kids. We'll pick up there.

Susan nodded as if his answer pleased her. “I don’t think that’s corny at all, and I don’t drink either. Coffee’s about the strongest thing I’m interested in.”

“If you’re ready, we’ll get going.”

She smiled at him, and after he helped her with her jacket, she locked the front door.

Jason was right. I’ve always wanted to go out with her. For a long time I’ve hoped she’d break up with that guy she was dating. This is my chance, and I don’t plan to mess it up.

Saturday Sample; The Captain and the Cheerleader

We're picking up where we left off last week. Do you believe that punch had tequila in it?

When the dance ended, people started to leave. She glanced at her watch. How odd. She couldn’t see it very well. “It’s late, Kurt, and I hafta go to church ah...tomorrow.” She yawned. “I’m a member of the choir.”

“Let’s say bye to Jose.”

Mendoza stood at the door saying goodbye to his departing guests. Just as they reached him and his wife, Kurt stumbled. He fell against Susan and sprawled onto a bale of hay covered with a clean tarp.

Maybe Tomorrow

Maybe Tomorrow
by Erin Cawood

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Contemporary Women's Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Does a heart ever really heal from its first break?

On an unseasonably hot night in late September, Dr. Keon McGowan is called away from a family gathering to a hospital emergency. Amongst his patients that night is a blast from his past he’d rather forget. He’ll certainly never forgive butterfly hunter Darcia Davenport for leaving him alone as a single father while she chased butterflies through the Amazon rainforest.

Coming face to face with the woman who broke his heart after all this time, Keon realises that he has never fully healed from it. But any chance of finding closure is ripped away when Darcy chooses to end treatment and live her final weeks without regret. Can Keon let her go? Or will he fight for the tomorrow they might never have? Maybe Tomorrow is an emotional journey of love caught between fate and destiny.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
Vibrations shot Dr. Keon McGowan’s hip as he placed a sterile gauze pad against the head of the frightened teenager sitting in cubicle nine. “I think there’s more blood than damage,” he reassured the youngster with a warm smile. Although the fifteen-year-old would need stitches, he’d been lucky on all accounts. Keon looked up at the boy’s parents and continued. “I’d still like a couple of scans. It's routine with head injuries, and it's likely the on-call neurologist will want to keep him overnight for observation just to be on the safe side.”
Keon gave them a nod as he removed his latex gloves, tossed them in the medical waste bin, and washed his hands. He didn’t want to cut their time short, but as the head of London’s largest trauma centre, Keon was acutely aware there were too many patients still awaiting first assessments, and there wasn’t a single cubicle free in the accident and emergency treatment area. He fielded calls between treating patients, unable to move more than ten feet without someone calling his name. It was all in a day’s work, except today, things were more hectic than usual, due to a massive traffic accident involving almost 200 people less than three hours ago.
“I’ll arrange for a porter to come as soon as possible,” Keon promised the parents of the fifteen-year-old at the end of the consultation. “But I’m sure you can appreciate they’re stacked out at the moment, as is the imaging department. I’m sorry it’s going to be a bit of a wait.”
They nodded, and Keon swiftly left the cubicle as his mobile vibrated against his hip again. Quickly, he glanced at the name on the screen. He wouldn’t normally take a personal call in the middle of a crisis like this, but this caller resided on the other side of the world. “I’m sorry, Sarah, but I can’t talk now.”
“Oh, hello, Sarah. How are you? I’m fine, Keon, thank you for asking.” Her sarcasm was not missed, but he was just too busy to acknowledge it. “But I thought I’d make this really important phone call to remind you the doctors at Mount Cook are still waiting for your call.”
“I’m sorry, but I’ve got seventy-three people who were in an RTA three hours ago. I can’t talk about this now.” He didn’t mean to be short, but the board had too many patients for his liking, and his staff grew weary. He didn’t need Sarah on his back right now. He returned to the nurses’ station. “Heather? Can you arrange for the patient in cubicle nine to have a CT scan and page neurology, please?”
A Word From the Author:
1.What's the best and worst part of being an author?
The best part of being an author is getting feedback from readers. Whenever I get an email, or a post on Facebook, or a tweet, I go all fangirl, do a happy dance at my desk, and get some very strange looks from the people I work with. But hearing from readers is definitely the most awesome thing about being an author.
The worst part…? I don’t know, if I had to pick something, I’d say it’s the administration side of it. I’d happily pay someone else to handle the repetitive tasks such as submitting to promotion sites. Researching new site s
2.Which book of yours is your favorite? Why
I guess here I’m supposed to say Maybe Tomorrow, right? And its by far the best book I’ve ever written?
But honestly, that’s like asking a mother to choose between her children. I love Faith from Tainted Love, she’s so strong and goes through so much heartache, as she lives through a marriage that slowly deteriorates over a number of years and she suffers physically, mentally, emotionally, sexually, and financially, as she loses her husband to his rage. Julia from Blurred Lines, for all her faults, really comes into her own, by the end of Crossing Lines. And Darryl, who’s the main character of Crossing Lines finally understands what his sister, Faith, meant when she told him to live and love and be loved the way he deserves. But Keon and Darcy from Maybe Tomorrow, they’re always going to have a place in my heart because they go through so much heartache before they find their happy ever after. So much that I have a butterfly tattoo.
3.What are your favorite authors in the genre that you write?
In terms of romance, I love to read anything by Amy Andrews. When it comes to Women’s Fiction I seem to go through phases. I enjoyed Marian Keyes for a while, then Sophie Kinsella/Madeline Wickham. I don’t tend to have favourite authors, I tend to read the blurb and choose whether to buy.
4.Which of your characters is most like you?
I don’t think any of my characters are like me. But they all seem to have something in common; they’re all quite strong willed and determined.
